Action Alert: Southwick vote expected this week. Call your Senators and urge them to vote NO.
President Bush has nominated Leslie Southwick to fill a seat on the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Bush previously tried to fill the seat with Charles Pickering and then Michael Wallace, both of whom faced significant opposition due to their disturbing legal records, especially on civil rights.
"Regrettably, Southwick also has a troubling record and appears to be cut from the same cloth as the others," said Ralph G. Neas, President of People For the American Way. "First Pickering, then Wallace, and now Southwick - Bush has completely struck out on the Fifth Circuit." More...
As Timothy McDonald said in an op-ed in WaPo:
Now is the time to contact your senators and demand that they stop Southwick before he gets a lifetime opportunity to roll back decades-worth of social justice gains.
It is expected that the full Senate will come to a vote for confirmation as early as tomorrow. You can use the widget on the right margin of the home page to contact your Senators or PFAW has a directory as well. PFAW, Magnolia Bar Association, AFL-CIO, NAACP and Human Rights Campaign (.pdf files) all oppose his confirmation.

But all the precious little children in Mississippi keep looking to their parents with pleading eyes, saying "Mommy and Daddy, do we have a new Fifth Circuit judge yet?"
Won't you think of them?
"fill a seat"
"Southwick went even further by joining a gratuitously anti-gay concurrence which extolled Mississippi’s right under “the principles of Federalism” to treat “homosexual persons” as second-class citizens. The concurrence suggested that sexual orientation is a choice and stated that an adult is not “relieved of the consequences of his or her choice” – e.g. losing custody of one’s child."
Oh yeah, this guys a real prize...
When I get on those electronic lists, I always wondered if I should click Rev. for title?
I bought a reverend title from the Church of the Sub-Genius.
Cut from the same cloth? Hell, he even looks like a clone of one of the Supremes. What is it with these whitebread guys?
Jo @ 5:
The first stipulation is you have to agree that Pat Boone is cool.
They all give me the creeps . . . wouldn't let my 10 year old boy within a mile of any of them . . . . !!
Jason and Dylan announce release of Loose Change Final Cut
I could email my senators until I pass out and it won't do a damned bit of good. Martinez will do whatever the hell bush tells him to do, and Nelson is all over the map on everything. I wish I could feel it does some good to contact them, but it never has. They don't care what I think, they care what the party wants. I'm just never sure which party Nelson is trying to be a part of.

So this guy is whitebread?

Sure thats what Pat Boone looks like when he wakes up in the morning.
Actually Alice is the first concert I ever saw.
The "Schools Out" tour.
We walked into this huge stadium(in a bus group from school)full of pot smoke and the first thing we see is some guy boinking his old lady in a sleeping bag, which left quite an impression on my 13 year old brain. One of the girls in our group piped up and yelled "what are THEY DOING??" which naturally carried for miles in all directions...
I think he's good friends with Larry Craig.
Hmmm, let's see.....
1. Republican.
2. Rabidly anti-gay.
3. Boyish good looks.
4. Name is Leslie.
Yep. There's a big-old padlock on that closet all right.
I sent an e-mail to feinstein's office a few months ago re. this issue, as she indicated that she would support southwicke. I received a reply saying that she met privately with the judge, and determined that he was "right" for the job, and that she expected his confirmation.
At that point, I quit supporting the Democratic party and re-registered as "declines to state". I also let her office know of my actions via e-mail. To date, I have had no reply, nor do I expect that I will get one.
BTW, Pelosi's recent comments re. Pete Stark validated my change of voter preference - and I e-mailed her and let her know that.
pissed off patricia @ 8:
I find the same response from my reps and sens. For a while I would get a response, now it's a waste of time and generally No answer. I'm a non person in my state because I don't think like they do. Most of the time I don't think they think. :( HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF TO DEAF EARS? (they have elephant ears that should be big enough ;) )
Does anyone know if Feinstein will vote against him, even though her committee vote released him to the full floor?
not another damn unitary executive theorist on the bench
don't let bush appoint any more judges, dems.
I bet one good american dollar that Feinstein votes FOR him.

That's just how I feel about my senator, Dianne Feinstein.
