I actually heard Shays make the comment on C-SPAN. What a freekin' putz. His comment was so idiotic. The irony of the part about foreign intervention was lost on him. I'm surprised no one has taken this dimwit aside and told him that there is no military solution in Iraq, and therefore our soldiers can't "win it"?

"What good does it do" to root out corruption in the Iraqi government? I'm sorry, I didn't think the point was to leave the place as bad off as we found it. Apparently the Bush doctrine is "You break it, you … break it some more."

Let's see, if there were less corruption it would seem that we'd have more money. This would help us to properly equip our troops and take care of wounded veterans and their families. Instead of having to protect the Iraqis from their own corrupt (anybody remeber the old anti-drug ad "I learned it from watching YOU Dad!")government, we could deal with people who care about all Iraqis and their country while changing our mission to a peacekeeping role. It wouldn't be a complete withdrawal, but it'd be a damn fine place to start. The Dems need to highlight the difference between their way of supporting the troops and how those other guys go about it.

The problem never has been what the soldiers do or do not do in Iraq. The problem has, from day one, been the policies of the Bush Administration. You could give the troops all of the weapons on earth, all of the support they need, continue to send them tons of candy and wave the flag until it breaks off the pole and it will make little difference. If the policies and goals the Bush Administration handed down the troops to carry out are flawed (and they are) or wrong then Iraq will fail.

Where does this asshole get the idea that the Iraqis wants us there? It bears repeating over and over to these idiots in Congress, that over 90% of Iraqis wants us out of their country.

Questioning the corruption in Iraq only endangers our troops more. Because if we find that 90% of the money we have sent to "rebuild" Iraq has been stolen and squandered by US contractors, then the US people might not want to continue the war. They may want the war run on a not-for-profit basis at which point we would have to end it immediately. No point in killing innocent people if you can't make money at it.

Chris used to make a lot of sense. He was my Congressman when I lived in Connecticut, and I voted for him several times. Something has gone wrong.
