Another One Bites The Dust: Karen Hughes Resigns

You know, normally, the burn-out factor in Washington DC is pretty high, so seeing turnover towards the end of a second term is hardly surprising. But what did give me pause is the way that this departure was framed by MSNBC:

Secretary Condoleezza Rice said goodbye to Karen Hughes this morning at the State Department, ending Hughes' two-and-a-half years in charge of America's public diplomacy. Hughes will officially be off the job in mid-December.

While Hughes' record as head of public diplomacy is very mixed -- her aides insist this decision is not about any disagreement with Rice or the White House -- rather Hughes wants to return to her husband and her family, who she has been regularly commuting to see in Texas. Rice and Hughes are very close, and Hughes still advises Bush, aides say.

Rice told the assembled State Department staff that Hughes carried out her public diplomacy work in "spectacular fashion." She listed her efforts toward Muslim outreach and other public diplomacy programs like a rapid response unit to counter negative stories about America and setting up regional media hubs around the world that deployed Foreign Service officers into local communities, as successes.

Hughes called Rice "a great friend" and "a great role model," and she said, "I feel that I've done what Secretary Rice and President Bush asked me to do by transforming public diplomacy and making it a national security priority central to everything we do in government."

Hughes has remained largely behind the scenes after her first high-profile inaugural trip to the Middle East in 2005, dubbed as a "listening tour." With 16 reporters in tow, Hughes was caught off guard at nearly every city stop. She was attacked about the Iraq war by Turkish women leaders; she caused controversy in Saudi Arabia by saying women should have the right to drive and "fully participate in society;" and she was shaky in press briefings about Middle East issues.

Anyone want to guess as to why the need to reassure that Condi and Karen are still BFFs? Maybe I'm too cynical, but the framing that this is about Rice saying goodbye instead of Hughes resigning strikes me as a little odd. For those keeping score, that means 8 out of the 9 Texan Bushie loyalists has packed their bags and gone home.

The Seminal: And then there was one...

This woman is a worthless POS. She's done absolutely nothing for this country and has garnered a huge paycheck simply because she is Bush's long time friend. Makes me sick, and I am glad she is gone!

Preacher Boob's picture

Karen Hughes so screwed up her latest assignment, and even further lowered our image around the world, that she was due for a big promotion.

Unfortunately, the job she wanted was already taken, because so far Spurious George has refused to recognize his incompetence, and retire to his Texas retreat to play with his remaining marble.

The ship she helped to sink is getting so low in the water that her boots were getting wet, so she decided to say 'Adios'.

Adios, MoFoette.

What do you bet she walks into a well corporate position somewhere...

Karen Hughes looks physically like the female version of Bush. And she probably sucks at easing the tensions between cultures in the world, if that was her job. Subpoena power is being underused.

Unfortunately, the "ship" she helped to sink was the Ship of State, which means we all are going down with Captain Fuck-Head.

I think the framing was in response to the fact Hughes has done a pathetic job of selling Bush Administration policy abroad. The attempt I see being made is to suggest that there may have been friction with the Secretary of State (by overtly insisting there was not.) This subtly off-loads the failure of the policy onto Hughes' failure to sell it. But then, try to sell three-day-old ice cubes on a hot day, and see how far YOU get.

When she left her post in the WH advising Bush, she said it was to spend more time with her family in Texas. The usual preening crap.

Then - surprise, surprise - she left Texas and her family for the diplomatic job at the State Dept. Obviously family life was a bust.

Now she's resigning again. To do what? Spend more time with her family.

What bullshit. Just for once I'd like to hear one of these public teat-sucking hypocrites say, "I'm going into public life so that my family can fend for themselves. Enough already."

Stand by folks. There is a brand new Rebulican gay sex scandal brewing. This one even has a nice blackmail motif. The story is about Richard Curtis who resigned today. Apparently he fell asleep in his motel after getting it on with a male prostitute who then left with Curtis' wallet and tried to blackmail him (according to Curtis). The other young gentleman, who has been charged with extortion claims that Curtis gave him the wallet as security. Sorry to interupt the thread but this is just too juicy.

This woman reeks of complete incompetence, the type of incompetence that is sinking America. All of my Republican friends said, ahead of the 2000 election, that Bush wasn't too bright, but "not to worry; he would surround himself with sharp advisors". Karen Hughes is an example of just how terribly wrong they were!

Anyone close to the mentally challenged Bush should be on alert that they could be in the cross hairs of going to jail for a very, very long time. Why would anyone believe that a life-long petulant , spoiled stupid little douchebag like Chimpy , would ever surround himself with those that are competent ; which would therefore immediately relinquish him to (understandably) , the low rung on the ladder/lowest link on the food chain ?

So, it is interesting that no one in the vast "liberal media" is bringing up the fact that most of the Bush appointees are actively engaging in the republican invented and evil game of "cut-and-run". They accuse everyone who is not of their faux evangelical base of this (cut-and-run) every time there is talk of exit in Iraq, but now... they are all slipping silently into anonymity and no mention of them is seen again. Remember "fair game" Rove anyone?

Complete your mission. Stand by your man (or shrub). At the very freaking least , finish the cream puff post you were handed on a literal silver platter and practice what you so rabidly preach. Effing cowards.

Hughes, L. Bush, B. Bush, C. Rice, A. Coulter -- these are some of the first robotic Women available, and the Bush Administration has been very courageous in roadtesting these early models.

They could use some work. Studies show that 9 out of 10 human males vomit into their mouths when they see pictures of these roboWomen.

If YOU are a human male, we recommend whiskey as one of the few antidotes to seeing these "R-Women." Do not, however, drink until after you are miles away.

Caution: Physical contact with the Karen Hughes version causes skin rash, burning sensation, and a sense of choking. These side-effects are the symptoms of a national disease. You may also find yourself involuntarily using profanity, organizing with others to oppose the rollout of the Next Wave of R-Women, and may even experience gagging when considering voting for the H. Clinton model, even though the label says D.

In 2002, Hughes was a member of the White House Iraq Group, the secretive task force charged with selling the U.S. public on the alleged dangers posed by Saddam Hussein. On March 14, 2005, Karen P. Hughes a longtime communications aide to President Bush was again tapped by Bush to be the State Department's new Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy to change Islamic perceptions about America. Failing that, it was used mostly as PR for "Bush's Vision", the Bush Administration propaganda to mostly Third World countries. On October 31, 2007 Karen P. Hughes resigned to head back to TEXAS with the hope that no one (Congressional investigators) will miss her and to plan the Republican Reunion ceremonies to be held sometime in January 2009 at the Bush ranch. I wonder if they’ll invite Rudy W. Giuliani

How did we ever arrive at a point where the country is being run entirely by pathetic losers?

This is the second time Karen has felt a sudden need to spend more time with her family. During Bushie's first term she said her teenaged son needed her, then suddenly he didn't, so she went back to D.C. for Bushie's re-election campaign in 2004. Now the boy is older, and suddenly Karen's family needs her again? Ah, politics. It's wonderful, isn't it?
