Countdown on Musharraf : Despot Measures

icon Download | play icon Download | play (h/t Heather)

Keith Olbermann speaks with Hillary Mann Leverett, former National Security Director for Iran and the Persian Gulf, on how the Bush Administration's ham-handed and ignorant handling of Pakistan's political turmoil has brought even more instability to the Middle East... a major problem if you need them as an ally in your "War on Terror."

This administration has not only given only a surface, very cursory stamp of approval and support to President Musharraf, but we have then sought to undermine him across the board. So we have neither propped up an effective dictator in the "War on Terrorism," nor have we presented or worked for an alternative to stabilize Pakistan, which is one of the most important countries in the "War on Terror:" the second largest Muslim population in the world and a country that does possess nuclear weapons.

Here's Bush's real inspiration for Musharraf's evil: Killing all the Pakistani Lawyers.

You lost me at "the war on terror". There is no war on terror and there is no war on drugs. I'm so bored with the narrative and so dissapointed that so many of my fellow citizens would actually believe in something so silly as "Islamofacism".

Al Kida was founded by Robert Gates, our current defense secretary. It was funded via the Pakistani ISI which is why they won't ever turn over OBL and why we really don't want to catch him. It was created to disrupt the Soviet's and their quest for a warm water port. The materials used in the Madrasas were written at the University of Kansas.

Take a look at our initial attack on Bagdad which was called, "shock and awe". Sure sounds like a terrorist attack to me.

Impeach the terrorists!

The CIA guys call the really dark black ops as "fun and games". Its a sadist's paradise.

That's what alot of people don't understand, some people get "turned on" when they hurt other people. The vampire is a metaphor for the sociopath.

Time to relax with the ad hominem "conspiracy theorist" . . . it ain't no theory and we're running out of time.

Another step in W's plans to completely destabilize the entire middle east.

Its not his plan although he is implementing it. The plan is to bring the US to its knees so that the North American Union can be implemented. That's why all the cable news programs are reporting on the border stations that our empty that allow people to simply drive across our southern borders. That's why the New York governor wants to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses.

Hillary Clinton attended a recent Bilderberg conference in violation of the Logan Act which is a felony. Hubby Bill attended a meeting before he became president. Its basically the global rich man's club.

Do a little research on the Bush family and you'll see how far this madness goes back. The clintons and bush's dine together.

I say, Ollie, I think this qualifies as another SNAFUBUSH.

One might call it a SEQUOIASHRUBFU*KUP.

Musharraf should worry if Bush offers him 'Unqualified Support', or congratulates him with 'Heckuvajob, Pervey'.

That's when the nukes will start flying.

"...And the man your Justice Department selected to decide whether or not waterboarding was torture had decided, and not in some phony academic fashion, nor while wearing the Walter Mitty poseur attire of flight suit and helmet..."

I saw the whole interview. Hillary Mann Leverett also played the either or canard. Either Musharraf or the "Islamic Extremists" win.
Anybody notice the thousands of lawyers demonstrating? Or the fact that the Chief Judge who has been arrested is not in any sense an Islamic Extremists? Just when will the U.S. learn that sooner or later supporting brutal dictators comes back to haunt us?
Peace.

MHealy's picture

Musharraf hasn't done a single thing yet to deal with the extremist threat. The only problem he dealt with is the possibility he could be taken out of power legally by the court.

"the Bush Administration’s ham-handed and ignorant handling of Pakistan’s political turmoil"

Yes, you see, Bush is a fool, he makes a lot of mistakes.

The odd thing is that his "mistakes" always turn out in his favor, with a lot of his pals profiting beyond their wildest dreams.

But keep throwing around the idea he's incompetent. He loves it. They love it. And the pipelines they are building out in Pakistan know only how to carry the crude -- democracy, tyranny, or the end of the world notwithstanding.

E Ryno @ 7 "Hillary Clinton attended a recent Bilderberg conference in violation of the Logan Act which is a felony."

Bullshit. That's SENATOR Clinton -- she is directly involved in our foreign policy, and attending a conference is not a violation.

"The clear intent of this provision [Logan Act] is to prohibit unauthorized persons from intervening in disputes between the United States and foreign governments. Nothing in section 953 [Logan Act], however, would appear to restrict members of the Congress from engaging in discussions with foreign officials in pursuance of their legislative duties under the Constitution." -- U.S. State Department

just another instance the US supporting democracy.... oh wait.... nevermind...

i would be willing to make a wager that the US not only is glad that musharraf is dictatorial, but actively encouraged it. he is the perfect fit for our military empire, all things considered.

(i know i am preaching to the choir. but of the media refuses to bring up the FACTS it is left to little old me to constantly remind people that the US has been the number one supporter of dictators in the world. suharto's indonesia, pinochet's chile, the shah's iran, iraq's saddam, baby doc's haiti, turkmenbashi's turkmenistan, mobuto's congo, etc., etc., etc.)

she said "war on terror"
even the DoD doesn't say that!

razant's picture

The USA has done the same with Saddam and Diem (1963-Vietnam) as they'll do with Massarraf. They'll use them for what they offer, then do everything to get them out as if they were never involved.
History has repeated this scenario so many times, I'm surprised the USA isn't attacked more often. Hope not but it doesn't surprise me how many people want to retaliate for decades of USA involvement in screwing up their country while the USA is running just fine.

I find it appalling that our officials, including Ms. Leverette when she was in the government, find it perfectly acceptable that in order for us not to have to fight "them" over here, several million people have to suffer the excesses of dictatorial rule. Those same officials' heads would blow up if you even suggested for a second that we should become a dictatorship so that England might stay free. Or I hope they would.

Now look at what is happening in Pakistan.
See who is oppressing the people.
And see who is supporting the oppressors.

The victims will not only hate those directly involved in their suffering but also their supporters: US!
And another couple of million people more will hate us.
And if another person comes along and tells them to join him in bringing the terror they have felt for all the time to those that are responsible for it, they will probably join them.

If we want to stop terror we have to stop supporting scum like this that winds up driving the people into the open arms of terrorists.

The question remains, why has the most incompetent administration in this country's history been allowed to remain in office. It was so painfully obvious long ago that Bush was dangerous, and the only way to stop him was by removing him from office.

With the media not even blinking as WH Spokeschippy Dana Perino making her 'restricting the constitution to fight terrorism is never acceptable' comment, I'm afraid we'll just wake up to find martial law was declared in the middle of the night (not unlike SCOTUS declaring Captain Flight Suit Boy as prezzy in the dead of night back in 2000).

Pakistan is not a part of the Middle East. I'm hearing this more and more. Daniel Shorr said the same in a piece on NPR earlier this week.

Just beause we're brown, speak a different language and cook food that isn't bland as ass doesnt' mean we're a) Arab or b) from the Middle East.

Life lesson (to the poster and some of the comments above): If you're going to write something, know what you're talking about.

Very good! I agree. Get your basic geography right before going after a fool like Bush. Pakistan is considered part of South Asia or is sometimes linked with India as part of the sub-continent. It is definitely not part of the middle east and its people are NOT Arabs.
