Giving Olbermann some company

When MSNBC added Tucker Carlson to its prime-time lineup two years ago, the network appeared anxious to capitalize on Fox News’ success as a Republican network. If cable-news viewers were flocking to a conservative, partisan network, MSNBC seemed to believe, then the answer was to keep up by putting more conservatives on the air.

The result Fox News-lite — featuring a lineup with conservative Carlson, conservative Joe Scarborough, and the politically baffling Chris Matthews.

Viewers didn’t exactly flock to this lineup. There’s already a Republican news network; no one needed a pale imitation. But with Keith Olbermann’s ratings continuing to blossom, MSNBC seems to have come to a realization: maybe there’s an audience for those who aren’t sympathetic to the Republican agenda.

Riding a ratings wave from “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” a program that takes strong issue with the Bush administration, MSNBC is increasingly seeking to showcase its nighttime lineup as a welcome haven for viewers of a similar mind.

Lest there be any doubt that the cable channel believes there is ratings gold in shows that criticize the administration with the same vigor with which Fox News’s hosts often champion it, two NBC executives acknowledged yesterday that they were talking to Rosie O’Donnell about a prime-time show on MSNBC.

And what about self-described “right-winger” Tucker Carlson? An NBC executive told the NYT he’s “in real danger of being canceled.”

On a related note, there's plenty of good discussion out there about whether O'Donnell is a good choice for the MSNBC prime-time lineup.

I vote that Rachel Maddow get the gig... Rosie is too devisive, but Rachel is smart, funny and informative...

Rosie? NO!!

Give me 15 minutes of Bill Moyers every night, and we'll get the truth.

The Fox Oppinion Channel last week was attacking Rosie for something minor and she has been keeping a low profile lately...maybe they already knew were Rosie was going...I can't wait to see her rip into all the cons.

I'm for Rosie. Enough of the others. Keith can stay too.

Ya beat me to it, LibertyLover. I've never been a big Rosie fan, and was gonna suggest Rachel Maddow as well.

They could bring back Donahue too.

And maybe spice things up with someone whose views don't quite conform to the left/right paradigm. (By which I mean someone with a unique or otherwise unrepresented philosophy, not someone ambiguous like Matthews.)

jack jett's picture

If there is a God/Buddah/Allah, then MSNBC will see that Tucker Carlson is a much better dancer than he is a news anchor.

He is a mindless jabbermouth and a major closet case to boot.

Perhaps he could get a gig at the Gaiety in NYC.

Love the Olberman......

I don't know if Rosie is the best addition they could make, but I'm glad someone seems to be getting a clue and 'thinking outside of the box' at MSNBC. They should have done this years ago.

Greg's picture

Where ever you quoted that from it's wrong. They didn't ask fat ass to do a prime time show it's a Late Night show. The time slot that no one really watches. I'm with you and all but keep it honest.

"....the politically baffling Chris Matthews."

Tweety isn't just politically baffling, he's sexually baffling as well. From his constant drooling over Bush's crotch, DropDeadFred's musky odor and Ghouliani's ugly mug to his endless Clinton panty raids, the man is a mass of latency and sexual confusion. The people in charge at MSNBC ought to watch a few hours of the closeted louse's output and own up to his cluelessly freakish sexual obsessions and and ax the loser ASAP.

Rachel Maddow would be good. She's had some exposure with Keith. Don't know how she would do on her own thoug.

tweakerbell's picture

Rosie is a bellowing jackass. Rachel Maddow would be excellent, as would Tom Hartman. We need to have people who are the opposite of Limbaugh et al: intelligent and engaged. At the same time we need to avoid hosts who are wooden and soulless (viz, most of the Democratic leadership - Rahm Emmaneul, Hillary, Reid, et al).

Heck - I despise his neoliberal agenda, but event Bill Clinton would be interesting...

DaveM's picture

i will never watch rosy blabber abut anything, even how much she hates bush. I would rather they have a host with some intelligence and grace.
Rosy is only desirable as lightening rod.

I would love to see Janeane Garofalo

How about Ed Schultz or Thom Hartmann. Both are great radio personalities.

grs's picture

Yeah, but Rosie O'Donnell is an idiot. What makes her qualified as a news anchor? Launching koosh balls or sitting around with a group of cackling hens is a little different than the nightly news. Oh, and she's an idiot.

justabill's picture

Not Rosie.

They need to get Sam Sedar or Rachel Maddow, or Sam Sedar with Rachel Maddow or something along those lines.

Nothing against Rosie except she's not worthy of a news show. Talk show, sure, but not on msnbc. omg.

Media wise we'll take ANY progressive voice we can get for now, and sort the better choices out in a year or two.

Right NOW, we gotta spend all our effort at negating the reddog dem's who have sold us out, and making sure Shilary Of The Shire don't get the primary. Her candidacy alone will set us back another four years, whether she wins the general or not. We can't LET her anywhere near the primary point of the dem's selection.

Pelosi, Schumer, Feinstein, Leiberliar, and others, they need to be quartered and strung for their treasonous votes and behavior in selling out the constitutioin whether they 'have the votes' or not.

Impeachment SHOULD be on the table and in motion, with or without votes.

Why? Because IT ALONE would force the dem candidates to finally stand for something besides the corporitist war machine and the fouling of our international and domestic future.

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!!!!

Start with impeachment, set a tone. That alone will shake shit out of the dark closets, and empower the 'little people' in the Judiciary, State Dept, congressional staffs . . empower them and embolden them and give WHISTLEBLOWERS some hope they will get their cases heard and prosecuted ON BEHALF OF THE MASSES!

I'l take Rosie O'Donnell ANY day of the week over ANY rethug supporter, though . . . *G*5

Give me Moyers or Maddow. Or Mike Malloy!

odanny's picture

Save the venom for the neocons, they start foaming whenever Rosies name is mentioned, much like some of you.

I will always respect Rosie O'Donnell for her outspoken views and for not giving in to daytime idiocy and vapid blathering like everyone else was in the MSM. She called Bush and Cheney and the Iraq war a fraud in the most blunt possible terms, reminded everyone how the consolidation of media ownership was responsible for the dumbing down of America and now people are whining she is not the intellectual that everyone wants on MSNBC? Rachel Maddow is great but Rosie drives the neocons batshit crazy.

Please MSNBC, NO! Get someone less divisive, and someone who can pursue intelligent discussion (AKA Not any of "The View" alumni).

The antidote to Fox News is NOT left-wing journalism; it's REAL journalism. Get Bill Moyers out there. Get Walter Cronkite outta retirement to school the current crop of talking heads on what it means to be a journalist and what it means to report the news. The last thing the US needs is MORE partisanship, and I despair for the sorry state of the fourth estate in America today.

Nick B's picture

Rosie is fat, loud, and annoying, which doesn't make her the best selection for her own political show, but perfect if you want to get ratings. Which is why they will hire her instead of Maddow, Moyers, Donahue, or Uygur.

The thing about Rosie O'Donnell is that she is unbelieveably popular with women, and that is a voting bloc I'd love to see courted more. Rosie may not be a political analyst by training, but she is very engaging, she's good at getting guests to talk, and her principles are spot-on. No one who isn't already politically engaged is going to turn on the Rachel Maddow show, but a lot of people who don't think much about politics will watch Rosie. I bet even a lot of people who reflexively turn on Fox News will watch Rosie instead. This is good for the Democrats.

talesoftwokittes's picture

Ooooh please, NOT Rosie. There are so many better choices.
She's a friggin' crackpot.

green917's picture

I think they should can the bowtie and give David Schuster his own time slot. He's proven himself (as has Dr. Maddow) to be a real journalist who isn't afraid to ask tough questions of anyone. I'll take anything I can get at this point though.

I'm with all of you who'd like Donahue back. MSNBC fired him in 2003: "We had to have two conservatives on for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals."

Jo-Ann's picture

Tucker Carlson should be canceled, mainly because he is a TWIT, not because he is a right winger. There are a few right wingers who are respectable, Joe Scarborough being one of them. You don't have to necessarily agree with him, but at least he's an honest player. Carlson thinks he is in competition with Sean Hannity for biggest jerk on television.

Donahue or Moyers would be just too good to be true I guess, but I'd start watching the news again for sure.

Agreed, Tucker is on the chopping block because he is a twit and no one cares what he has to say about anything. That he lasted this long is further proof that this left/right imbalance is badly tilted towards right wing idiocy. KO is a lone voice in the wilderness. Rachel Maddow would likely get Tucker-like ratings. She is not going to generate the outcry or interest that Rosie will, and the viewers its likely to bring (shes proven herself in getting viewers to watch)

I'd say this spot is hers if she wants it

I used to love Rosie.

However, when she chewed out Tom Selleck on her old show, I just thought she was picking on the wrong guy. He's a republican, but he seems to have common sense.

Rosie O’Donnell as a counter to right wing jabber mouths? It looks like MSNBC is attempting a failure so they can claim that there is no money to be made by giving voice to Liberal or Left opinion. If they wanted to succeed, they'd give Stephanie Miller a show.

Che Guevara IV's picture

I never heard of Joe Scarborough, Tucker Carlson or Chris Mathews until I subscribed to Cable so they musta been nobodies. Sports is everyday America and Keith Olbermann had his name on the airwaves for years. He's a smart thoughful guy and his success is not in bashing bush but in taking him apart in terms that are traditional to American culture. Long story short, rosie is an entertainer and predictable I saw her shows. DAVE SHUSTER is the ex-FOX reporter whose American conscience was rejuvinated in his reporting of Bushwacked BS out of Washington. Rosie would be a great weekly guest but DAVE SHUSTER deserves. He's Smart and very Perceptive.

justabill's picture

I like Alison Stewart too, but Schuster would be better. neither would I consider to be liberals though. They are journalists through and through.

If msnbc is seriously considering a left tilting show I can think of a lot of names who could do them justice, bring them instant ratings, and make O'Reilly's head explode nightly without embarrassing the network like Rosie will.

Rachel Maddow, Sam Sedar, Cenk Uyger, ...

Rosie will bring some ratings, but there will be a long term cost to their reputation. I won't be watching her.

TC-14's picture

Well, sounds like MSNBC has screwed up twice. First by going conservative-tilt, thinking that was the wave of the future. Then screwing up a second time by figuring "What we really need is a babbling idiot who also happens to be liberal." Yeah, that'll fix it all up, and make Dems purr like kittens, all right.

Why not simply find a successful, charasmatic, progressive radio talk show host -- they're not that hard to find -- and sign him/her up? Rocket science here? Apparently for MSNBC, it is.

When I read the original article, I also thought of Maddow immediately. If I'm counting correctly, 22 other people had the same idea. Maddow would be a superb host.

Putting a spotlight on the mistakes of our current government does not imply liberalism. Just a few days ago, Bush Senior teared up when he mentioned that under his presidency, soldiers treated prisoners well -- it's neither a liberal or conservative position. Any other treatment is a war crime, period.

1.4 years from now, Keith Olbermann will be shining just as strong a spotlight on the mistakes of the new government, as they happen. Responsible journalism. That's what people are hungry for. Non news, fluff news, and slanted news are high in calories, but have no truism value.

It seems that there is universal agreement here that MSNBC is engineering a failure to prove the Corporate Media thesis that right wing opinion is the only opinion that can succeed in the marketplace of ideas. By putting on a stereotype of an unappealing "Liberal" (who is not exactly the greatest advocate for Liberal opinion to say the least) they can generate hostility towards Liberal opinion. It's a modern media take on the logical fallacy the Straw man argument. Put forth the weakest position of the side you want to debate and debate that while ignoring the substance of the other sides points.

lilorphant's picture

Well they should have kept Donahue and Banfield, I turned it off when they left and when I moved I didn't get cable for three years out of spite for all the shit they try to make us swallow. The only show I have watched on MSNBC in four years is KO.

Imagine my surprise to see what TLC had devolved into.

cin's picture

I guess my point is that Washington is full of idiots. It is full of right wing nuts that get their way and meanwhile dems always fold. I don't like what is going on right now. But someone needs to be fearless...someone needs to start standing up for what is right, and she would do this. You maybe wouldn't like her presentation...but she wouldn't back down to special interests or corporations..

enigma4ever's picture

Rosie eh? hmm MSNBC maybe realized that there were good ratings on the View ....I am sick of Tucker and his antics....maybe they should also talk to Donahue again...I have been writing to them that Shuster does a good job in Tucker's slot...

cin's picture

rackle: you hit it right on...I listed 3 assholes.
And they have tons of assholes. There are right wing talking nut jobs on all of the stations. Unfortunately people watch them, and we need someone to counter them.

StirFry's picture

You should have started out with , "There's good news and then there's bad news."
Fucker Carlson getting canceled makes my heart all a flutter.
But Rosie O'Donnell is a joke. I will write emails but I'm up against the enigmatic GE corporate wall.

LibertyLover @ 2:

I vote that Rachel Maddow get the gig... Rosie is too devisive, but Rachel is smart, funny and informative...

Forget Rosie! Her glory days are over. She jumped the shark, big time.

Rachel, on the other hand, is more than simply intelligent, she knows her subject matters thoroughly, she's witty and never abrasive. In other words, the perfect antidote to the likes of Rush and Beck and that ilk.

cin's picture

look at lou dobbs..
no one is a bigger mouth than him...
and his petty little tit for tat with elliott spitzer..
when not once has he called for the resignation of Bush..
not once

and then he hides behind the save the working middle class crap.

rosie would be just as loud as lou, but guarantee like KEith Olbermann she would be asking Bush for his resignation.

She would be a great choice.

odanny's picture

cin @ 98:

She isn't a journalist....

Since when does that matter...

Is Glenn Beck a journalist...or geraldo rivera...or tucker carlson...

She would intimidate the intimidators..

Republicans have been intimidating and shouting down for years now..

We Need a shouter../.

cin @ 87:

Rosie has spine...
something we have all been ranting that lacks in dems..
She cowers to noone...
I say bring her on..

Yup, you got it right, both times.

Blender's picture

Rosie? Rosie O'Donnell? GAH! When will these people ever learn?

I'm going to be sick.

DavidC's picture

Another vote for Rachel Maddow, I would really hope they don't go with Rosie. I don't mind her but she's too crass for a 'real' news program. Sadly style over substance tends to rule the day.

natisman's picture

Rosie I can't take, I won't watch her.

if Tuckster and Chris can go away that would be nice.

how about Rachael Maddow from New York, Thom Hartman from his house boat in Portland and the big red head from the heartland, Ed Schultz. An hour of good talk about folks who want everybody to be middleclass as hell. it could work! they can do all sort of stuff and since they only maybe have to give about 15min a day, they can be fresh.

Lots of possibilities, there.

Cowboy Bob in Austin's picture

Rosie has her moments... but mostly she's made herself a CARTOON of what a political liberal should sound like.

If you haven't been listening to Rachel Maddow on the radio, you have been missing something VERY SPECIAL: smart, insightful, funny, assertive, serious, and INFORMED... I can't think of a better programming counter-point to Keith Olberman's Countdown. Come on, MSNBC... show us some intelligence and GUTS!

cin's picture

rackle..
correction..
I meant house and senate:)

abarts's picture

Let's keep Schuster as a reporter. He's a good one, and they are hard to come by. He also does great as a fill in.
...And NO ROSIE!!!!

joe cantwell's picture

if people write msnbc and vote for rachel maddow then we'll get rachel maddow.

i hope.

I agree with some of the last posts. Give me Rachael Maddow, Thom Hartman or even David Schuster. They would be great. I don't know what Rosie would bring except someone for the Rightwing to harp on. Maybe that's why they want her. But really. Put someone in with a brain! A political brain anyway. No that rosie doesn't have a brain but she's just to divisive and I think that's why they are talking to her.

No matter who the Liberal Progressives have on the air they will be attacked by right wing attack dogs! Don't run and appease the right wing. Stand up and fight them!!

kuvasz's picture

Good grief, instead of a politically astute mind we get an actual political clown? How's that for sabotaging the Left?

Why not bring in the likes of Eric Alterman?

MSNBC won't touch the guy now because he's bright, right, and articulate as hell. Hey that's why they fired him before!

Cowboy Bob in Austin's picture

An... by the way...

Tucker Carleson is THE LAMEST political pundit to EVER take up broadcast time. It is a REAL SHAME that he got the nod for a sole program... when his old CrossFire buddie, Bill Press, was passed over. Press has much better political credentials... and is a better thinker and talker too.

It is an abomination that the TODAY SHOW has gone over to The Dark Side, politically... and I don't understand the hesitation in MSNBC to lean to the left a little more when you consider the enormous national sentiment AGAINST the president and his military agression.

FreedomOfInformationAct's picture

I am sure that Rupert Murdoch and Faux Snooze have a room reserved for ol' Tucker, but if not, there's always CNN (lol)!

loreleig's picture

Ah, Keith & Rosie - back to back! It would be worth it just to watch Billo's head explode!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

Bonkers's picture

I'll put in a vote for Phil Donahue! How could I forget?

But still, a big thumbs up again for Rachel Maddow.

uschi's picture

Can't stand Rosie. I want Phil Donahue back. He was kicking ass until they fired him because he was against the war and Bush.

cancel's picture

Cancel Tucker? Please, let it be so and yes, he can join Billo the Coward anytime....

JoeN's picture

Its intersting that Olbermann's ratings are increasing. In Portland Oregon comcast moved MSNBC from channel 47 to 128 with no notice. That means to watch him you have to get digital cable. Rachael Maddow would be great but Bill Moyers is a journalist. Rosie No. We need the truth.

Tim in Japan's picture

What about Jack Cafferty? or Greg Palast?

Tequilatarian's picture

Oh please...not Rosie.

While I am sure many of us here agree with her on many issues, she does not have the journalistic temperament needed for a news/politics show. Do we need more yelling heads?

Rachel Maddow for one would be a better choice.

katecontinued's picture

I love Rosie, but first shot should be to invite Phil Donohue back. NBC needs to give a big apology. BTW, there is room for Rosie, Rachael, Laura Flanders, Amy Goodman and more. For Christ's sake the cable is 24 fucking 7. (Leave Randi, itsallaboutRandi, on the radio.)

jr's picture

I'm tired of Tucker being employed. The Swanson foods heir keeps trying to be "tough"

jules's picture

Rosie would be the best thing that could ever happen to MSNBC. She will make mincemeat out of Hannity and King and just imagine what it would do to Trump. That alone would be enough for me. Billo almost had a stroke on tonites show just thinking about it. Cable news will never be the same and finally we (not the right-wing nuts) will have something to feel good about. Rachael should replace Tucker and Donahue could replace Rosie on her nights off. Honest, folks , life will be beautiful for us !!!!!!

swarmofkillermonkeys's picture

Rosie O’Donnell?! What are you nuts? Man. That's like getting a tabloid host like Katie Couric to host the news- oh, wait. Nevermind. BAD IDEA. No more gossip.

I don't know who Rachael Maddow is, but she's bound to be better than Rosie (who was an OK talk show host, as was Ellen, but NOT a hard hitting news/politics junkie).

MSNBC, please stop vamping up the news... Phil Donohue is an EXCELLENT suggestion, perhaps with a co-host. Excuse my bluntness, but where are all the black people on MSBNC? Hispanics? Asians? Don't they know about news? Don't they follow politics? Something missing on these networks.

Not like they could afford Don Cheadle (though Don and Phil, how awesome would that be), but there must be SOMEBODY. Especially on the Blue team.

10 to 1 the execs at MSNBC want to pick somebody that will quickly fail in ratings so they can go back to hiring mirror-image white conservatives like Scarborough. Who wants to bet?

FedUpFred's picture

Rosie would be good opposite the drunks on Faux Noise's Red Eye.
Maddow would be great before or after KO.
Shuster should be more than the only decent reporter.
Put Tweety with Carlson & Scarborough in the early a.m. Let the ravages of sleep deprivation sort 'em out.

sully18's picture

I`ll just be glad to see Tucker "MoveOn," to something more appropriate like kissing George Bush`s ass.Oh,wait,he already does that.Well maybe he could get a job on Wall Street. He`s plenty phony for that crowd, but he`s not very bright.Never mind that.I`ve got it;FOX News,Geraldo Lite. He`d be perfect. And he a yes man.FOX loves Yes men,but probably not the real Yes Men.

You don't know who Rachel Maddow is?

Heresy, I say, pure heresy. (Look to the left margin, Rachel Maddow is listed, and I think the "8" refers to the number of videos.) She's just one of the best :)

supertramp's picture

Rosie will get ratings! You have start hitting fox noise's numbers. I could easily see her, after some time, beating Hannity. I love Rachael but she cannot carry this timeslot at this point in her career. I never watched Rosie's show or the view when she was on but i know alot of people who did - she is controversal and fearless and mostly right on important issues. It is all about taking the money away from fox noise right now and given people an alternative viewpoint from someone who will get their attention. Rachael sure as heck could take douchebag tuckers spot though. I also think that Ed Shultz would gain a good following on televison.

Terrible's picture

They'd do very well to drop Scarborough ASAP then!! What a ignorant piece of trash that clown is!

Pazuzu's Petals's picture

Rosie? What on earth for? Sure, she can wield a cudgel with gleeful ferocity, but as earlier posters mention, Rosie isn't exactly associated with political analysis or thorough research. She's not much of an entertainer, either. Rosie talks way too much about Rosie, and bless her heart, she's not that interesting.

gene214's picture

No, not Rosie O"Donnell! She doesn't have what it takes for a serious politics talk show. She say something dumb and just end up a lightning rod for the reichwing feces flingers. MSNBC would have no choice to cancel her and then say "See, Liberal talk shows aren't in demand". Rachel Maddow would be awesome (with Mike Malloy doing occasional guest commentary, her show would be a sure winner!). Somebody mentioned Walter Cronkite - hey, as much as I admire that man, he's too old to do that kind of gig now. But we do have the female equivalent in Amy Goodman.

Greg Palast. I bow to your superior wisdom and hate myself for not thinking of it. Maybe Max Blumenthal as an undercover correspondent.

not stupid's picture

“….the politically baffling Chris Matthews.” I do not mind him
TV is my radio. After making sure of listening to C-span journal to see what is really is happening, I go for Link or Free speech TV for my real news with Amy Goodman on “Democracy Now” I did learn about Keith on “crooks and liars” I have watch him every night since. I will never watch Tucker Carlson because of his double talks while on CNN with Bob Novak. Just his voice and looks make me sick. The other one I was glad to see change was Joe Scarborough’s
Rachel Maddow, David Shuster, jack Cafferty, Bill Moyers or Lou Dobbs would be perfect. No Rosie unless it is early in the morning.

Easy Writer's picture

Rosie is a joke and an embarrassment. She is inarticulate and woefully uninformed.

What about DAVID SHUSTER?

He is excellent!!!

observer's picture

Tucker likes Ron Paul a little too much, time for the establishment to throw him in the trash. Fuckers.
