Wexler (FL-19) v. Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) on Impeachment
Meteor Blades has a great post up. John Conyers doesn't seem overly excited to start Cheney/impeachment hearings and neither does Debbie Wasserman Schultz. And I liked her during the Schiavo debacle.

So Should we call Conyers Office or not ? I have been getting mixed signals about this all week...thanks.
well they should get over themselves....and get to doin the will of the people.....and I'm willin an impeachment....even if it doesn't work....drag those dirtbags thru the mud..........yummmmm
What they are saying is that justice for committing high crimes is less important than the elections. Sadly then, the people who perpetrate crimes against all Americans will walk out of government free of charges and abole to write books on how great they were.
IMPEACH.
Why won't I be voting for any Democrats in 2008?
Because Nancy Pelosi took impeachment "off the table".
Why can't the democrats just stick together for once? Yay Steve Cohen!
we need to ask the dems running for president if they will pursue criminal charges against
Cheney, the biggest gangster of our time, has got his suit cases packed full of taxpayer dollars and his plane ticket to Halliburton's new headquarters in Dubai already booked just waiting it out till January 2009. He's not worried, impeachment or not, he has succeeded in taking this country for a ride and will get off having gotten countless innocent people killed in the process. He is going to retire in style. Laws don't apply to him and he knows the Democrats will back down. He doesn't have a care in the world.
members of the bush administration when or if they assume office.
Ruthless People @ 8:
If you think that the American people will let him go, with Israeli economy flourishing, Dubai becoming the City of Arabia with the highest buildings on the planet, Dubailand, Movie Studios, best hotels, biggest man made marina islands ever and so much more, Haliburton's stock upsticking avery goddamn quarter, WHILE the US economy and dollar is sinking and becoming worthless and the American people go bankrupt and can't go to Canada because it's too expensive to buy there anything with a weak currency, if you think that Mr. Chaney will be let go free after conning America and committing probably the biggest scam on an independent nation in man's history, I think you are simply wrong.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6179432634249787416 The new home of Chaney and the Halliburton buddies while your family is about to starve to death!!
Boy do I wish we could Impeach these fools.
The Dems are a lost cause.
Until proven otherwise.
Ruthless People @ 8:
He'll be happy to join ol bud Kenny Boy Lay over there too.
Orangutan. @ 11:
Wish in one hand an shi . . . never mind
If we wake enough people up to the truth of these dirtbags Justice can and will be served. No matter if Cheney runs his ass to Dubai or not. The American people have the power. We will get our justice if we decide to stand up for ourselves. International law doesn't have no boundaries as far as I can tell.
i heard the show with Ed Schultz. He could barely keep his temper, which is saying a lot, Wasserman-Schultz was very disappointing. Basically, these guys think their jobs are more important than the lives that are being destroyed daily in Iraq and the US. Ed kept asking her why she thought timing was a reason for not upholding the constitution. They have all either sold out or are being threatened.
When are these Democrats going to realize that they are not going to accomplish anything until they impeach these lying, criminal motherf*ckers? This country can't wait another 14 months. They will pull some sh*t before then, without a doubt. They need to be put on the defensive every day. Impeachment proceedings will only shine a light on all their crimes. This country needs to be shown just how evil and corrupt they truly are.
My system administrator has Dkos blocked. Can't access it. Can somebody summarize the story?
Orangutan. @ 15:
I don't know. The more you try to speak the truth the smaller your circle of friends becomes it seems these days. I saw a blog today on How to survive the Writers Strike by getting by with DVD Movies, catching up on sleep, and finding the best reruns till things get back to "normal".
enigma4ever @ 1:
ummm, fuck yes you should call every person on that list. I live in Wexler's district and received the email on Nov 7. I have both emailed and called him urging him to act immediately. Monday I'll call every one of those people and, very politely, tell them that we are a nation of laws, not a nation of people, and that no person is above our laws. I'll urge them to do the correct thing, and to do so immediately. Everyone reading this post should do exactly the same thing. Do, it, people, goddam it, do it
The Constitution has to be number one. The people of America should be number one too actually. That's why I like Ron Paul, because he puts the Constitution number one. And that's why I like Dennis Kucinich.. He puts the American people number one. The others. I think they put themselves number one. The Corporations number two. The international secret societies number one etc.
We the people need to put each other and ourselves number one.
enigma4ever @ 1:
Conyers has already refused to consider impeachment.
Re: others, above, who are wondering if the Dems are being threatened, the best way to neutralize blackmail/extortion/threats is to go public about them.
mls @ 17:
I think it's to late at this point. The Bush Kleptocracy has so wrecked the economy that the only thing holding this country together economically (by a thread) is War Spending.
It's a very bad, a very nasty situation.
I used to think the 30 something group with Schultz was pretty refreshing where a group of young Reps would stay up until 1 in the morning ripping away at the sheet thats hit the fan here....
That's been going on for months...and what's happened ? What urgent business are they going to introduce thats just going to get filibustered or vetoed and thrown back I their face ?
The DINO's may as well spend "their" last 14 months in power before they lose it because all this important crap that Schultz said needs to be done ain't happening.....They can't even get the chimp to insure friggin kids...
Thank God for John Amato and these blogs. Otherwise this country would be doomed. I mean. You have to admit we are making a difference. But could you imagine waiting for Tweety Bird Matthews to put this country ahead of his career and start speaking the truth it wouldn't happen. These boys, our opponents, are smart as hell and worthy opponents. All you have to do is look at Operation Mockingbird to know how effectively these guys work.
I think Conyers would hold hearings if he had the support of the committee. We need hearings immediately. I'm calling everyone (even the Repubs).
The bloggers, that's us, are having an effect. Look at the YouTube debates. That would never occur without our strength and dependability, we censor ourselves, Look how we took down Dan Rather. The truth rises to the top with us. And the truth makes a difference. We have credibility and that's why the mass media is looking to us a lot more than they ever have. That's why I pray for Net Neutrality and the freedom of the Internet in the future.
Paul @ 20:
Hiya, Paul,
Got the phone number to hell? My representative, an anti-Constitutional neocon fascist, recently died and is now roasting on a spit in a hell she earned many times over. Her seat is still vacant.
Agree with your sentiments and plan.

Maybe this thread should be about creating a category for this kind of behavior.
Paul @ 28:
that would be 343-639-7825(7)
that translates to Cheney suck(s)
The problem is the media.
But the media simply waits for the Dems to Impeach.
Catch 22?
More like catch -22.
Get your act together so the media will believe you have a back to have.
L.A. Confidential @ 13:
How exactly does DWS know what we voted for? Is there some exit poll that said overwhelmingly we voted so the Dems could "focus on withdrawing our troops from Iraq, on expanding health-care access, on making sure that we can refocus our efforts in terms of alternative energy and putting resources into that." and not "to spend any time on the impeachment of the Vice President."
That's quite a strong blanket statement she's making. and she's by no means the only one who is saying that. It seems to be the conventional wisdom, at least in the media and on the Hill, but where does it come from? It just sounds like an assumption to me.
btw, It's Real Time again.
They have all either sold out or are being threatened.
BINGO!
The GOP fumbles.
The GOP stumbles.
The media acts like they score every play.
The Dems have to "score".
Its pretty simple
If you're not agreeing with Rep Deb Wasserman Schultz on this post, you'll like this.
A lot.

Wassreman Schultz was pathetic on Ed Schultz's radio show. She should be ashamed of herself. Take your 165k a year job and shove it, Debbie. As long as her kids weren't tortured or were killed or crippled in Iraq she don't care. Nothing is ever enough to impeach with her.
L.A. Confidential @ 23:
Well, since they do not seem to be able to stop the war, I guess the war spending will just have to be the glue to hold it together albeit "by a thread" during the impeachment. Because if there isn't an impeachment, it's all going to fold anyway.
justabill @ 36:
I be liking that!
hillary will need to get after that vast right wing conspiracy with criminal indictments and convictions. it will be much easier after bush is gone.
Put Wasserman Schultz in with LIEberman, PEloosi, EHMANuel, DIFI, REikd, SCHUmer and boosh and chainy - betrayers to the constitution
Note to House DEMS: STFU and impeach bush and cheney!
BTW- Miss Wasserman
THERE WERE TWO AND A HALF YEARS LEFT IN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, BACK IN NOVMEBER OF 2006!!!
What the h3ll are you DINOs doing in Congress?
Did you not swear on the holy bible to uphold and DEFEND the constitution of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?!?
‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’
I too second the 'Motion to Table' the Democratic Party in November 2008.
I will only vote for true independents, and strongly suggest that real patriots like Dennis Kucinich change their party affiliation to independent, and FORCE ALL THE DEMS AND REPUBS out on Tuesday, November 4th 2008!!!

Take away their power, their privelidge and their money. Give them working class jobs and make them figure out how to make ends meet. Just like they punish us.

Johnny2Bad @ 49:
Yes, let's have 100 Republican Senators and 435 Republican Representatives. That way we are blameless. (Dead, but blameless.)
We have 535 people in Congress representing all of us. That is less than 1.8%. One for every half million of us.
.
.
.
That'll work...
The Republican party is busy triangulating, trying to put an ounce of daylight between themselves and the Bush regime. Why shouldn't the Democrats put them on record as supporting the noxious and unpopular Bush regime? I think it would benefit them in the coming election cycle.
I really like this congresswoman, she is bright and always on target, but I was so disappointed in her this morning on the Ed Shultz show.
Again I have to wounder do these people really understand what their duties are.
They swore to protect and defend the constitution and the laws of this country and that comes before anything else they may be doing and they do not have the option to decide weather they want to or not.
The fact that she said that she just disagreed with Ed, was testimony that she is really not up on her duties to this country or she is being coached by speaker Pelosi, whom she really admires and oh what a shame
Wasserman-Schultz's argument is weak. Even if the Democrats get ligislation out of the House, that legislation will either get killed by Republican obstructionists in the Senate or a Bush veto. They could not even get the SCHIP bill passed even thought it had overwhelming bipartisan support. Just take a look at various ways Senate republicans have been obstructing:
* Senate Republicans have obstructed almost every bill in the Senate - even ones with wide bipartisan support.
* So far, in the first half of the first session of the 110th Congress, there have been THIRTEEN cloture votes on motions to proceed - each one wasting days of Senate time. (110th Congress, Roll Call Votes #44, 51, 53, 74, 129, 132, 133, 162, 173, 207, 208, 227, and 228)
* In comparison, in the first sessions of the 108th and 109th Congresses combined, there were a total of FOUR cloture votes on motions to proceed.
EIGHT times Republican obstruction tactics slowed critical legislation
* Fulfilling the 9/11 Commission Recommendations (Passed 97-0, Roll Call Vote #53)
* Improving security at our courts ( Passed 93-3, Roll Call Vote #133)
* Water Resources Development Act (Passed 89-7, Roll Call Vote #162)
* A joint resolution to revise U.S. policy in Iraq (Passed 89-9, Roll Call Vote, #74)
* Comprehensive Immigration Reform (Passed 69-23, Roll Call Vote #173)
* Comprehensive Immigration Reform (Passed 64-35, Roll Call Vote #228)
* CLEAN Energy Act ( Passed 91-0, Roll Call Vote #208)
* Funding for the Intelligence Community (Passed 94-3, Roll Call Vote #129)
FOUR times Republicans blocked legislation from being debated
* Senate Republicans blocked raising the minimum wage. (54-43, Roll Call Vote #23)
* Senate Republicans blocked ethics reforms (Rejected 51-46, Roll Call Vote #16)
* Senate Republicans blocked comprehensive immigration reform (Rejected 45-50, Roll Call Vote #206)
* Senate Republicans blocked funding for renewable energy (Rejected 57-36, Roll Call Vote #223)
FOUR times Republicans stopped bills from reaching a vote
* Senate Republicans blocked funding for the intelligence community. ( Rejected 41-40, Roll Call Vote #130)
* Senate Republicans blocked raising the minimum wage. (54-43, Roll Call Vote #23)
* Senate Republicans blocked ethics reforms (Rejected 51-46, Roll Call Vote #16)
* Senate Republicans blocked funding for renewable energy (Rejected 57-36, Roll Call Vote #223)
TWICE Republicans blocked bills from going to conference
* Senate Republicans blocked appointing conferees on the 9/11 Commission Recommendations (6/26/07)
* Senate Republicans blocked appointing conferees on ethics reform ( 6/26/07)

Democratic Donor Strike Against DSCC and DCCC
Submitted by Bob Fertik on November 3, 2007 - 8:55am.
1604 of 100000 people have signed this petition.
In 2006, the voters of America elected Democratic majorities to the Senate and House in order to end the occupation of Iraq and restore the Constitution of the United States. We, the Netroots, helped elect Democratic majorities with large contributions of money, time, and passion.
Unfortunately Congressional Democrats have surrendered to George Bush and Dick Cheney on all of the issues we care about most: Iraq, Iran, warrantless wiretapping, torture, and habeas corpus.
We recognize that "Bush Democrats" are primarily to blame for Democratic failures, and we will do
whatever we can to change their minds - or replace them with true Democrats in 2008. But we cannot wait until then to fix the urgent problems we face.
We will therefore begin a donor strike against the official fundraising committees for
Senate Democrats (DSCC) and House Democrats (DCCC) until our core demands are met.
We will instead contribute only to individual candidates who firmly support the values of the Democratic Party and the American people, as certified by BlueAmerica and Progressive Challenge 2008.
Please Sign the petition
xoites defends Constitution @ 50:
How bout replacing the current cowards with brave Progressives? How bout that idea? Hmmm???
Debbie Schultz said she wasn't elected to impeach the vice president, she was elected to stop the war. the only way to stop this war is impeachment and it would prevent an additonal war.
Where is the leadership in this country today? Can't these lawmakers figure out that Cheney is a criminal and impeach him accordingly? 13 Democrats didn't have any trouble impeaching Clinton on a farcical charge. I bet if Schultz took a poll among her constituents, she'd find that they do want Cheney impeached. The Democrats with this argument are either stupid or corrupt themselves.
moonsha @ 54:
Good points. Progressive Daily Beacon has an article up on this and it's the best thing I've read on the subject. The guy nailed it.
sam @ 10:
It's funny, but what this person is describing is exactly what the past presidents of Mexico actually do. They leave the country because they are so corrupt and they've messed up Mexico so much, they don't want to live there. Fox is the first one to stay around and go on the speaking circuit.
StCyrlyMe @ 53:
I really like Wasserman-Schultz as well. She definitely feels an obligation to Pelosi becuase Wasserman-Schultz gets alot of floor to time to speak on various issues as part of Pelosi's "30 Something" Woorking Group. As an avid C-Span viewer, I have seen Wasserman many times argue and debate from a point of view that would make you think she would definitely support impeachment. Looks like Pelosi and Hoyer are practicing Republican strong arm tactics on the people's representatives.
sam @ 10:
cheney already has offices in dubai and a home set up there. what's wrong with you?
i will tell you. YOU'RE AN IDIOT !!!!!!!!
Wouldn't impeachment be nice? If this were the Presidency in question then I might feel the impeachment would do more harm than good, as this President has damaged the Office more than any other Pres before him. However, Cheney should be handed to the wolves. This can only be good for American. Prosecute, prosecute, prosecute.
dadams @ 61:
I know he does. Offices and home. I'm barely stating the facts and I'm such an idiot for doing that indeed. The Right wing constituency which you are apparently part of, will certainly make the last one push for a post-presidential charity fundrising judging by the tone of your statement so his retirement in Dubai will be not partially, but fully satisfying experience for all the good things he has done and left over for America on its knees to make sense of after his departure. Let me propose the proper cause. Golden house molding with Bush-Jesus-911-Halliburton-GOP engraving every 20 inches.
moonsha @ 54 "They could not even get the SCHIP bill passed even thought it had overwhelming bipartisan support."
What an IGNORANT conception.
You don't understand the strategy they are employing, which is btw WORKING.
In order to break the hold of the R leadership on their caucus, the Progressive Dems bumped up the SCHIP allocation to a level that lights the R leadership's hair on fire.
Consequently, they tried to force their caucus to vote against it, setting up a classic conflict of interest for the R Reps. Should the burn their reelection chances down opposing an overwhelmingly supported public program, or should they continue to wear the DOG COLLAR of the Bushco/R leadership en block coercion?
SCHIP, and those children, will be JUST FINE. This bill will be used to slap the R Reps around for months and months and months, and look at the results.
• Congress overrode the first Bush veto, the Clean Water Act, which is mainly money for infrastructure in the localities. Buscho opposed, because preventing disasters interferes with their meal ticket and their privatization schemes. But the R Reps COULD NOT oppose their own political needs to that degree. That's --jobs-- and public works, and it's good for the economy (and votes) in their districts. Fifty-four R Reps voted yea.
• ENDA, with employment protection for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, just passed the House. Thirty-five R Reps voted yea. (this number is more stunning than the larger one for the local money)
Etc. It is stick and carrot, the usual. If you think SCHIP was a failure, WOW, you do not understand Congress. The R leadership is rubbing their rears wondering what hit them.
Kucinich's resolution also turned into a rout for the R leadership, btw. The Dems left the vote open for two hours, because the R were swinging from voting Yea to voting Nay, and that kind of indecision also weakens the R leadership's en block hold on their caucus. Put enough cracks in a block of marble, and maybe the monolith will fall.
CA04 Voter @ 5:
HILARIOUS! You don't vote for Charlie Brown and you shoot yourself in the foot with Hunter, who is so corrupt he's picking worms out of his hair.
I always thought people in Auburn were the smarter sort. Your district has made some stupid votes in the last seven years, and to hear you say you plan on throwing away your vote is just PERFECT. What a hero you are.
Oops, in #65 I meant Doolittle, not Hunter.
Hard to tell some of the most corrupt Congressmen in U.S. history apart.
The Sea Hawk @ 62 "However, Cheney should be handed to the wolves. This can only be good for American. Prosecute, prosecute, prosecute."
• Impeachment and conviction is entirely a civil process. There are no criminal charges, and the only penalty is removal.
• Secondly, all of Cheney's crimes below the level of TREASON are easily erased with a swipe of Bush's pardon pen.
Outing his crimes in a floor fight for impeachment might be useful, but everyone there already know his crimes, and the media will be in full-tilt spin mode. It might stop an attack on Iran -- it could as easily greenlight it.
Hopelessly 'quaint' generalities, such as, for instance, 'lying the country into war' are not going to go anywhere in Congress (and run the risk of resolidifying the R hold on their caucus).
Specific crimes could be turned over to a special prosecutor, but we just lost that option substantially. If he lives long enough, we may get justice.
whizkid @ 35:
That's exactly right. Rudy's 9-11 right-hand man Kerik is a criminal (using Guiliani and Bush to raise money for his defense trust) and all they can talk about is Hillary's tipping.
I want to see the dems score just once without caving in. I'd throw a house party or somethin.
I also heard Wasserman-Schultz on Ed Schultz yesterday and again today, when it was replayed. I was absolutely furious with this woman who exemplifies all that is currently wrong with the Democratic Party. I totally disagreed with every argument she made. It was especially infuriating to hear her parrot Republican talking points and using their "framing" when discussing cessation of funding for the Iraq war by saying that we would be abandoning the troops!
This was my first exposure to this woman and it was not pleasant, to say the least. She had requested to appear on Ed's show, he had not invited her. It appeared that she had been fully programmed with Pelosi/Hoyer/Reid/DCCC/DLC bat squeeze to perform as a Chatty Cathy doll when her string was pulled. What she said, and the attitudes and beliefs she exhibited, were sickening and disgusting.
I've been a Democrat longer than she's been alive. If this airhead is an example of the 30-something crowd, God help us older people who have some sense and who believe that the Constitution is more important than the careers of Craven Congressional Critters like her.
On several occasions I have tried to contact a member of the House who was not my Representative only to be denied the ability to do so (via email). I have impaired hearing and don't use the phone if I can avoid it. Many (most?) will not accept any email unless it's from their own district even though they are acting, speaking out, and serving on committiees on matters of national importance which affect us all. I ran into this problem when I tried to contact Wasserman-Schultz and Nancy Pelosi. (I live in the Bay Area but not in Pelosi's district.) They insulate themselves from criticism and deny input in this way. It helps keep them hermetically sealed in their Beltway bubbles where they like to boast that they are doing what the people want, when that is not at all the case. The polls show that We, The People are as furious with the notoriously spineless Democrats in Congress as we are with Bush and Cheney, and for good reason.
The minute Pelosi said impeachment was off the table, she lost my support. Impeachment isn't hers to turn off or on, at her whim. It is mandated by the Constitution!
I also heard the interview with Ed Schultz, and I have to say...she held her own, and made some very good points. Never thought I'd say that. "Impeachment proceedings would block out the sun."
Impeachment will not prevent military action against Iran. Not to mention the amount of TIME it would take for the proceedings. The repubs would have available to them all the delay tactics that Clinton had.
Does this administration deserve to be punished? Absolutely. But impeachment proceedings would totally backfire. I do believe that.
Litebug @ 69 "Impeachment isn't hers to turn off or on, at her whim. It is mandated by the Constitution!"
Oh my!
Did you stop to consider that so is a functioning legal system?
Bushco's crimes have been in evidence for at least five years, if not longer. Why do you suppose the Republicans didn't impeach him if it is "mandated in the Constitution"?
Why has the Justice Dept. failed to indict all these cronies who have committed crimes? Have you seen any movement in the prosecution of the Abramov cases still in Congress?
The RNC is under Congressional subpoena. They are just entirely ignoring it. Do you know why?
Odd, terribly odd. I know! Let's blame the most progressive Speaker in history for the collapse of the Justice system! Because blaming THE ACTUAL CRIMINALS would take too much of a brain cell.
Tommy @ 70 "But impeachment proceedings would totally backfire."
Ya think? My Rep., Diane Watson, who supports immediate impeachment, says that we are THIRTY VOTES SHORT IN THE HOUSE.
But the leftists think that's just rot. There IS no opposition, just lazy, cowardly Democrats they can blame and feel superior to, with all ZERO of the left's own Representatives to show how it's done.
Tommy @ 70:
If you mom or sister or brother were killed by a serial murderer and eventually he would get caught, I truly hope so that you would be similarly indifferent when it comes to justice, I hope the additional stress it would had caused to your family would be way too much to bare and you would do anything in your power to stop the legal proceeding from commencing, trail from happening and justice from being served. I truly hope that you realize that the Constitution is the only "good book" given to you to protect you from death, injustice, suffering and invasion of any kind. Only in America a notion that seeking justice can "totally backfire" may be even deliberated, no matter how insane the sheer fact that it's said out loud without shame is. Say it out loud standing in front of any founding father's monument or grave and tell me how it feels to be so mentally undone, deprived and humiliated human being.
Wasserman-Schultz went on the Ed Schultz to deliever a message to the Democratic rank and file that it is "our way or the highway". I would imagine that after her arrogant edict to this membership, Howard Dean probably saw the membership roll declining at a rate that it looked like the outbound I-5 during rush hour on a Friday night in LA.
I can't claim to be one of those on the I-5 outbound because I stopped my contributions to the party after Reid & Peloise's first act of cowardice in March.
Tommy @ 70:
Tommy, you've obviously bought into the s..t they're shoveling. before any order of business, the house must be cleaned. impeachment proceedings must begin now before the end of the term and they all escape untouched, with the country in ruin. impeach now.
if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. in order to impeach, we need the support of everyone.
sam @ 73:
After all, there is a reason why you swear on the Bible to uphold the Constitution, not swear on the Constitution to uphold the Bible. I'm a Roman Catholic, but the Constitution always comes first and foremost. I could call myself a citizen of the planet, a citizen of the spiritual world, a Biblian, but I decline, because my Constitution gives me the dignity and privilege to call myself an American, it gives the practicality of belonging to a country with the borders and rules and, in addition, believing in whatever I want. The problem with the Bush regime is they have turned things around. They reinvented the order set by the original founders, they set it up so there is the enemy that needs to be squashed, hated and labeled a danger, there is the law that needs to be maintained in violation of the ultimate law which is the Constitution, there is the religion that is superior to the counter religion and the military is to be the protector of the new, post-911 evangelical anti-muslim principles, there is the nation that is seen as the place in need of the ultimate protection because the Jesus is yet to come again, even though the Bible teaches otherwise, there is the money and influence that affects the way the "Elected to screw the Americans" officials think and makes them believe that the Bible nevertheless teaches so (mostly prejudiced, prone to idiocy, intelligence lacking right wingers can't resist the contradiction). There is a reason why Denis Kucinich and many others always keep the mini-Constitutions and mini-Bibles in their pockets. The Bush's and Chaney's mini-Constitutions are long burnt even tough they are the present Washingtons, Kennedys and Franklins for the American people with real nation, real hardships, real history, bunch of things to be proud of and struggle with. And what f******g Franklins they are.
groucho @ 16:
That's the truth folks. Sad but true.
i really like big eddy's passion. he's beating the drum for impeachment, and i feel good that he's on the side of impeachment. he's a great debater. i've been listening to him for a long time. but if memory serves me correctly, and it doesn't always, in the early going he was absolutely against impeachment for basically the same reasons that the dem leadership is espousing now. if i'm wrong, i stand corrected, but that's what i remember from his shows a few years back. i remember because i was extremely disappointed with his stance. as i said i could be wrong.
L.A. Confidential @ 19:
hell, i guess it comes down to just whom you would like to call your friends. check your circle, are they enlightened, but a small circle. or do you have a large circle of friends composed of kool aid drinkers. personally i feel really comfortable around people who see the crookedness of this admin. maybe that's why i enjoy reading C and L. There are some really bright people here. i know there are "educated" sincere people on the other side as well, but i truly wonder about them.
Standing up for something and acting on principle is what will get the Democrats elected. I'm sure Wasserman Schulz is utterly clueless about how monstrous she sounded saying that the American people don't care about preserving the rule of law and their constitutional freedoms. And by implication standing up for America won't contribute to getting her reelected so why should she bother. "Give me liberty or give me death"? More like, "Give me reelection or I don't care."
The lack of any ideals is at the heart of the Democratic Party's sickness. They are all poll watchers. Isn't part of the reason we are a _republic_ instead of a pure _democracy_ that fact that we are supposed to send our best to Congress? The thinkers. The speakers who can articulate a direction for America and motivate us all to achieve it? These poll watchers are a sorry lot of little scurrying politicos.
True, there isn't a strong 3rd party movement to threaten them but their "vote for us or shove it" attitude will keep a lot of us home or voting Dennis Kucinich/Steven Colbert write-in.
L.A. Confidential @ 19:
LA Confidential has a point. I've been trying to tell my family and friends about what's going on in the world and why we all need to take a stand before it's too late, and it's been a very frustrating 7 years. I'm talking here about a reasonably large group of college-educated, professional people who are generally very savvy. None of them wants to believe that the little fairy tale we've been living in since the end of WWII is coming to an abrupt end - and it won't be a pretty sight. I guess when they see the explosions over Iran and then get their IRA statements in a few months they'll have a better understanding. Americans, who've been brought up to believe that our country is the last best hope for the world and that all of our leaders were great, and everything we've done around the globe has been for the good of those we did it to, cannot fathom that all of this has been lies. It's kind of like the kid who finally learns the father he's idolized is really a womanizing, crook. DE-NIAL, as they say, is not just a river in Africa.
I'm going to keep annoying my friends and family (they think I'm nuts, but they tolerate me) and I'm going to keep emailing/callng my Rep and Sens as often as possible to tell them to IMPEACH Cheney and Bush. I am not holding my breath until that happens, though, as I believe that most of the Congress are either on the take, being blackmailed/threatened, or also in that African state.
I'd be interested to read some comments from C&L folks about what more we can actually be doing to try and save our Constitution, if not our very lives rather than just complaining and make clever puns.
It's sad how all this talk by the Dems of no time to impeach is also because they ignored it for so long and now feel that running out the clock is a viable strategy. They need to fulfill the role of their office which the last time I checked is quite different than merely getting re-elected to office. The fact that they know the base will respond positively to those who show some spine means there is something else at play here.
Hey Wasserman-Schultz, for $156K a year, I am expecting you to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, as well as think! I ain't paying you to sit around on the bench while you think I'm going to renew your contract. Use some of that taxpayer-provided healthcare to get the Republiconn "voices" cleared from between your ears and get a spine transplant as well.
sam @ 77 "After all, there is a reason why you swear on the Bible to uphold the Constitution,"
When you are the first Jewish Representative from Florida, you don't swear on a Bible PERIOD.
The U.S. Congress holds no religious test for membership. There IS NO RELIGIOUS BOOK PROVIDED BY THE CONGRESS FOR SWEARING IN.
If you want to bring in Thomas Jefferson's Koran and swear on it, that's your prerogative. Otherwise, it is just your right hand raised for emphasis, no book, no religious tract. You can swear on a stack of Playboy's if you so choose.
Sound like someone got to Conyers & his family. Look what happen to Paul Wellstone. Enough said.

CA04 Voter @ 5:
I'm with ya!
I will be voting green in 08". These people think that they can just go on swimmimg in all their new found corparate-donations by simply not rocking the fascist boat. As far as I am concerned, they are complicit with the Bush/Cheney crime syndicate. And I for one, am not going to reward them for being "republican-lite".
In fact, when the economy collapses into full-blown depression-mode, these idiots might find a very large segment of the americam people voting against both repukes, and sell-out democrats. And they will have no-one to blame but themselves.
I wonder just WHOM is out of touch with 'reality'?
Beyond Congress
By Shea Howell
Special to The Michigan Citizen
Last week I was at Oregon State University in Corvallis to hear Detroit activist-writer Grace Lee Boggs give this year’s Pauling Memorial Lecture. Her theme was “Active Citizenship.” In the course of talking about her own political journey, the current crisis and the challenges we face she said: “The crisis of the Iraq occupation and of the imperial presidency of George W. Bush call for impeaching a president and vice-president who have been systematically expanding the powers of the executive, have subverted the U.S. Constitution and are also violating international laws, the sovereignty of other nations and the sanctity of individual rights and liberties.”
This call for impeachment brought the audience of nearly 1500 people to its feet in loud, sustained applause.
Such a spontaneous, heartfelt response deserves consideration. What is it about the call for impeachment that resonates throughout this country?
Many of us realize that the U.S. is currently one of the most destabilizing nations on the planet. Our leaders control vast, destructive power that they are willing to use everywhere. They have no decent respect for the opinions of humankind, the will of the majority of their fellow citizens nor the laws and practices that have evolved to govern international relationships.
The impeachment of Bush and Cheney is the single most important tool we have to establish some restraint on an executive that has used fear to turn our country into a nation despised by much of the world. Impeachment is a step toward recreating an active democracy inside the U.S.
Dennis Kucinich, Democratic candidate for President, understands this. This week he introduced a privileged resolution to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney. This parliamentary maneuver allows him to circumvent the Democratic leadership that opposes voting on the measure.
“The best option to prevent an unnecessary war with Iran,” Kucinich said, “is to impeach the Vice President, the lead cheerleader of the war. The Constitution gave Congress the power to impeach. Congress must use its power to restrain the Administration and impeach the Vice President before he prods the United States into another war.”
Twenty-one other Congress members joined Kucinich. The only one from Michigan was Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick. We should applaud Kucinich’s effort and hope that each of the supporters of the bill invokes similar tactics to keep impeachment alive in Congress. But we have to face a deeper crisis.
After Boggs’ speech a women asked, “Do we have to wait on Congress to impeach Bush-Cheney?” Clearly we cannot depend on Congress to do the right thing. Most Democrats are so caught up in wanting to win that they have forgotten that the point of power is to use it for the common good, not to protect your job.
We need to create a citizen-based impeachment. Already more than 100 municipalities, including Detroit, have passed resolutions in support of impeachment. We need to pass such resolutions in every gathering we attend, every association or organization we belong to.
Churches, professional meetings, universities, community groups and civic boards all need to go on record for impeachment. And we need to begin to hold some public impeachment hearings of our own so that we can engage with one another about what we believe to be the proper roles of the Executive and of Congress. We need to establish new principles to guide our engagement with the world community.
The most important thing about impeachment is not what it would do to Bush and Cheney, but what it would do to and for us. We have a unique responsibility to create a new, living democracy. Clearly, the one we have doesn’t work.
