S. 2248 is now before the Senate Judiciary, and will be voted on in just a few days. Unless public opposition is once again vigilant and strong, this new TIA bill has a good chance of passing in committee and of reaching the full Senate floor. Unfortunately, the dire consequences of this legislation for the survival of democracy in America, including the potential to destroy fair elections, have been greatly muted, misrepresented, and downplayed by the mainstream media; and mounting pressure on Congress from both the Bush Administration and the giant telecommunication corporations have combined to increase the odds that S. 2248 will soon become law.

WASHINGTON - A federal judge Monday ordered the White House to preserve copies of all its e-mails, a move that Bush administration lawyers had argued strongly against.

U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy directed the Executive Office of the President to safeguard the material in response to two lawsuits that seek to determine whether the White House has destroyed e-mails in violation of federal law.
"Feinstein is not merely voting reliably for the most extremist Bush policies, though she is doing that. Far more than that, she has become, time and again, the linchpin of Bush's ability to have his most radical policies approved by the Senate."
So I heard that one of the people in the know says that the reason Obama never attacked Hillary strongly (as most predicted) is because she has promised him a Supreme Court nomination if she is elected. It makes complete sense; that is EXACTLY his background in law. He even speaks like a justice.
It explains a lot about his campaign. I was wondering if anyone else heard about that?
I find that sad though, as it means that the race is effectively down to 2: Hillary and Edwards. Of course, it doesn't look like she paid him off, since he is pointing out she fakes press conferences like Bush!... but still...
Being an open thread, apropos of absolutely nothing, I'll give a little Veteran's Day virtual salute to my dad:
He volunteered as a Marine in the South Pacific during WWII. He saw kamikaze pilots aiming for the ship he was standing on and shot down at the last minute, slept in foxholes, and walked through minefields. He certainly qualifies for all the reverence afforded to "The Greatest Generation."
I point all this out to note that just because you're "old enough to be a conservative", and just because you were inundated with propaganda as a youth, and just because you spent your late teens with people from a country you'd never even been to trying to kill you, and just because you're a veteran of the Marine Corps, that does not make you bigoted, unwilling to see reality, or stupid. At least in my limited experience, quite the opposite.
When I married a Japanese woman, my dad never expressed even the slightest hint of complaint, and I truly believe that he did not and does not feel any--it was a war that nobody wanted any part of, and he hardly holds it against people born decades after it was over. When I look at the animosity directed at anybody from even the general part of the world that the 9/11 hijackers came from, it disgusts me because I KNOW it does not have to be this way.
When he watches the news--which he does, and he's a sharp guy--he is visibly and vocally disgusted with what the US has apparently come to stand for. He knows from experience that war is a stupid, pointless affair, and is smart enough to know that this country has no business whatsoever being involved in any in the middle east. So when I stand up and lambast our government, the amorality that it practices, and the sham that is our imperialistic foreign policy, I KNOW that it's not just because I haven't been in the military and don't know what I'm talking about.
So whenever someone indirectly questions the patriotism of someone who is against endless war against The Other or expansive foreign policy or torture, then I don't need to be outraged only because I know these things are wrong--I can point to my father and say, with righteous outrage, that with that broad stroke they are labeling HIM unpatriotic as well, and for that I hold them in greater contempt than the ants that keep getting in my leftovers. I can feel disgust for people who are stupid, but when they by implication insult my father, who is in my opinion the definition a great man, that enrages me the way few things can.
For all the veterans out there who fought for what they thought was right, whether it turned out to be or not, this day's for them. In particular, the one who made me who I am.
I'm disappointed in Harper's government up there in Canada not sponsoring a UN declaration calling for an end to the death penalty as has been that nations symbolic tradition. He is turning that great liberal nation into a clone of America. The strip clubs are getting tamer and the great BC weed is becoming a bit harder to come by. I'm hoping the liberals can get their acts together up there. It seems they have defective fools like Pelosi and Reid running the left up there too. The liberals are so terrible it makes the right wing look good. And we have a lot to learn from what has happened there in the last big elections. We need strong leaders in the democratic party or we will go down in flames. Get Pelosi, Hoyer, Murtha and Reid the hell out of leadership positions and start putting real progressives in charge. We only have the devil Bush for another year and his poll numbers are in the tank, yet our democratic leaders are doing NOTHING. If the dems continue to avoid real confrontation and Hillary is the nominee I pray the democrats loose the Senate, Congress and the White House. I'd rather have a fascist Republican government than having a bunch of phony "democrat "corporate pigs fooling everyone. The left cannot continue to let itself be used. The dems promise the blacks time and time again, but never fulfill. If we don't do something in this election with all our power - the blogs - the money - the voice of the majority - WE will have failed America more than the devil GW himself. We really need to wake up as a movement and get radical!
And in regard to the black comment I meant to add that we must not allow ourselves as a movement to be used by the democratic leaders as they have used the african american voters for the last 50 plus years. These people like Bill Clinton go into the inner cities making all these promises and they do shit for the blacks. Bill Clinton in fact pushed the rights welfare reform, which through a lot of single mothers and poor blacks onto the streets. It didn't provide for schooling, but just put them in a revolving door of poverty. Yet we hail Clinton as some great leader for the blacks. We are a deceived people. As a progressive movement lets not let the Clinton DLC democrats fool us like they have fooled black people in this country into being loyal voters for the dems.

Corruption Scandals Involve Alaska's Biggest Political Names
ANCHORAGE -- When the FBI came looking for corruption in Alaska politics, it found an excellent perch in Suite 604 of the Baranof Hotel in Juneau, the state capital. There, a profane septuagenarian named Bill Allen did business throughout a 2006 special session called to set taxes on the oil industry. With hundred-dollar bills in his front pocket for ease of access when lawmakers turned up with their hands out, the oil-services company executive turned in a bravura performance before the pinhole camera that federal agents installed opposite his favorite chair.

And, I would like to clarify for those who don't know, the term "Congress" generally refers to the House of Representatives. Though the term does of course refer to both Houses in various contexts, we do not call Senators 'Congressmen' for a reason.
We have about 180 loyal-voting Dems in the House, and about 25 in the Senate. Bashing the entire Congress for what some Senators are doing to screw the country is an insult to those loyal politicians who are trying to fight that kind of screwing.

But today I can reveal to you a simple and powerful truth.
A tyrant’s only ally is fear.
Just as in a fairytale where the villain cannot exist unless you believe in it, tyranny cannot exist unless you fear it.
Whether fear of personal oppression or phantom enemies presented by the state, terror must be maintained or the cohesion of authoritarian control always disintegrates.
And so today I say to you that the way to victory is easy.
Just stand up and fight.
Unlike our founding fathers, we are not asked to forge towards the defeat of some implacable enemy through fields and valleys awash with filth and blood. We are not asked to leave our homes, our land, and our families on an almost certainly fatal journey with little hope of return. And we are not asked to die the brutal and agonizing death of so many anonymous patriots, whose last anguished cry was freedom, alone on some cold and desolate battlefield.
No my friends, all we are asked to do is stand up and fight with our voices and our unaltered votes.
My fellow citizens, the truth is that the Constitution fails to defend itself, enduring only in the brave hearts of those who would uphold it.
So today I ask every American within the sound of my voice, or reach of my words, to once again stand as one people, with one voice, with one conscience, and one purpose, and demand the immediate and unconditional restoration of our government of the people, by the people, for the people, and visible to the people.
Today I ask every American registered with the Republican or Democratic parties to immediately abandon those failed institutions and register as a non-partisan voter. Today I ask that from this day forward, we, as a united people, vote only for those candidates who pledge to immediately restore our Constitutional Republic.
These are the keys to the kingdom my friends, which we have always held. It just seems that, for awhile, we had forgotten how to turn them.
Yes, it’s time to empty our secret prisons. Let us free the innocent, and justly convict the guilty.
And let history record that in that darkest hour, when loss predeemed history, providence again praised freedom. Providence, and the righteous will and might of the American people.

budda @ 17 "Yet we hail Clinton as some great leader for the blacks. We are a deceived people."
We do? You are?
I don't know anyone who thought BC was a great leader of the blacks. Who ever thought that? The Washington Post?
In all fairness, many black leaders were rallied by Ron Brown and others in the Clinton posse. Clintob was about the only politician willing to be seen with a black person around him, even among the Dems. So the deception was very successful.
the media ignored his death penalty record which was third, behind the two bush bros and his education record, third-last, behind ala. and miss. and just ahead of tex. clintons program cuts were similar to reagan's, except clinton did it with many people smiling along side him. the clinton/black meme was something that gave the dems 92% of the black vote. a very succesful strategy.
And in regard to the black comment I meant to add that we must not allow ourselves as a movement to be used by the democratic leaders as they have used the african american voters for the last 50 plus years. well put! and with Ron Brown beside him, BC was able to pull it off as if it were a benefit.

The Economic Consequences of the worst president ever - http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/12/bush200712
The next president will have to deal with yet another crippling legacy of George W. Bush: the economy. A Nobel laureate sees a generation-long struggle to recoup. When we look back someday at the catastrophe that was the Bush administration, we will think of many things: the tragedy of the Iraq war, the shame of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, the erosion of civil liberties. But the damage done to the American economy will be felt beyond the lifetime of most.
Think of the interest we are paying, year after year, on the almost $4 trillion of increased debt burden—even at 5 percent, that’s an annual payment of $200 billion, two Iraq wars a year forever. Think of the taxes that future governments will have to levy to repay even a fraction of the debt we have accumulated. And think of the widening divide between rich and poor in America, a phenomenon that goes beyond economics and speaks to the very future of the American Dream.
In short, there’s a momentum here that will require a generation to reverse. Decades hence we should take stock, and revisit the conventional wisdom. Will Herbert Hoover still deserve his dubious mantle? I’m guessing that George W. Bush will have earned one more grim superlative.
Must Read: The economic costs to the United States of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan so far total approximately $1.5 trillion, according to a new study by congressional Democratic reps that estimates the conflicts' "hidden costs"-- including higher oil prices, the expense of treating wounded veterans and interest payments on the money borrowed to pay for the wars. Study says wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost average U.S. family of four more than $20,000.

Experts: Danger of Nuclear-Armed Iran Hyped - http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/21341.html
A hostile country led by anti-American ideologues appears close to developing its first nuclear weapon and, as a U.S. election approaches, the president and his advisers debate a pre-emptive military strike. Newspaper columnists demand action to stop the nuclear peril. The country was China, the year was 1963 and the president was Lyndon Baines Johnson. Now it is Iran that is said to may be bent on acquiring nuclear arms, and President Bush who has declared that “unacceptable.”

"Last week the Journal of Geoclimatic Studies released a new report "pointing to ocean bacteria as the overwhelming cause of global warming," according to Reuters.
Even Rush Limbaugh trumpeted the story on his radio show. But there was just one problem: the whole thing was a hoax. There is no "Journal of Geoclimatic Studies," and the authors of the study don't exist. The whole thing was a big trick to expose climate skeptics as the non-scientific propaganda-pushers they really are. In an interview, the apparent author of the spoof study wrote:
Its purpose was to expose the credulity and scientific illiteracy of many of the people who call themselves climate sceptics. While dismissive of the work of the great majority of climate scientists, they will believe almost anything if it lends support to their position.

I'm sorry patriot diana, but the multi thousand impeachment letter campaign myth (some say 10K, some 20K, other 50K, etc.) has been around since the treasonous Pelosi gained power, and now you would actually have to ask her to put the entire Constitution back on the table, and neither the Republicans or Democrats will ever willingly do that again.
But there still may be a way to restore our Constitution, and the rule of law it embraces, to America. (And no, I'm not a Ron Paul supporter, I think he's simply a good old fashioned heartless neocon).
All loyal Americans still registered with the Republican or Democratic parties must immediately abandon those failed institutions and register as non-affiliated voters, crippling them financially as much as the citizens can, and if we're lucky enough to actually have another free election, vote only for those candidates who pledge to immediately restore our Constitution.
And if we don't have elections on schedule, well, you know what to do.

An American stands for the rule of law and the right of the accused to be considered innocent until proven guilty.
An American stands for human rights and the humane treatment of even the most heinous criminal.
An American stands for our Constitution, and the just punishment of all those who would violate or subvert it.

I'm disappointed in Harper's government up there in Canada not sponsoring a UN declaration calling for an end to the death penalty as has been that nations symbolic tradition. He is turning that great liberal nation into a clone of America
I know and it sickens me to death just thinking about it.
The latest "Hey didn't they already do this in the US" scandal involves the FORMER conservotard PM, mulroney whom I hate with almost as deep a loathing as his american ape cousin, shrub. mulroney and his gang were such thieves that he and his wife were almost ARRESTED for stealing donated objects d'art from the official residence while they were vacating it. They played it all off as a huge mistake of course.
Our economy which was doing well until the mulroney years [blarg] was plunged into debt from which we only recovered thanks to the new Liberal government which was immediately elected upon mulroney's cut and run resignation. Basically he realized he and his criminal gang had taken all they could get. So he procured a job offer for himself and quit politics.
When he ran away his predecessor Kim Campbell became the party leader and in the next election the conservotards reaped the benefits of mulroney's reign. They managed to secure a sum total of TWO SEATS in the entire house. Two. We were THAT CLOSE to getting rid of them forever. There was a LOT of joy and not a little schaudenfreuda that day.
Unfortunately the conservotards hung on and later 'merged' [allowed their name to be assimilated] by a new political party calling itself of all things "the reform party" who's creator was a former US citizen. The party was mainly a draw for bigots and haters of all sorts coming together under the banner idea of hating all things liberal. I'm happy to say that they failed miserably for a long time. Until they managed to buy the conservotard name and convince the remaining conservotards that their way was the best way. After some back door deals which went south once the cameras were on, they had what they wanted. [this is also why we have a foreign affairs minister who's from Nova Scotia who had never been further than ottawa.]
With a lot of money and a little advice from some "friends" across the border they managed to start winning seats again and finally bought the last big election and here we are.
The first thing harper and his sponge minions tried to do was reverse the ruling that recognizes same sex unions. This is one of the platforms the haters campaigned on. "We'll bring our country back to DECENCY" and you should have SEEN the buck tooth, head-up-their-ass, groups they drew. It was a nightmare. Their campaign seemed to leech these people out of the woodwork like a stain. Thankfully when the time came steve harpy couldn't get enough votes in his OWN party to get his little referendum of hate going and he had to concede almost immediately that he wouldn't be able to pull it off. [HA!]
In the wake of his presidency er election he has done all he can to make himself the 'imperial primeminister' modeling his behavior after his big hero, chimp boy. I can't even begin to tell you the things he's done to try and control the press on parliment hill. At first there were protests. If harper wasn't going to answer questions, said the reporters, then we aren't covering his announcements. And they didn't. I love them for that. It pissed the fat bastard off like nothing else and he was on tv a few times making annoyed attacks on the press for their [how dare they] independence.
The conservotards have solidified their hold on things by spending all their time and money trying to make the word liberal a swear and trying to turn this into america jr. One small consolation is that this is an open party system and there are MORE than just the liberals and the tards. The NDP is a large party with many seats in parliment as are the quebequois. [but it's difficult to respect a party who's only real goal is to take as much as it can get for itself and then take quebec out of Canada.] So while the conservotards are doing everything in the US playbook to make things just like their bestest buddies in the US, the other parties continue to behave as though they live in Canada. It's an ugly struggle that is causing changes in my country that really make me sad. The fact that all it takes for these cretins to turn their back on everything is a big fat wad of money. I'm surprised they can remain upright they're so crooked.
The latest scandal is that the current PM knew about the former PM taking bribes and in fact was probably in on it if not completely aware of it. Now that this revelation has arrived he's suddenly willing to start an inquiry into the former conservotard's reign of stupid. Here's hoping HONEST people find the crooks out and we can run them out of town on a rail as soon as possible.
Wow. I just busted Yahoo for being propagandist, lying S.O.B.s.
One of the main headlines on Yahoo's homepage says Report: 'Hidden costs' have driven price of wars up to $1.5 billion. But guess what? I click on that headline thinking to myself that this number sounds a little bit low and read the article which states that the hidden costs of this hideous war are topping $1.5 TRILLION.
Hey that image is most disturbing... I'd prefer to neither see nor contemplate a mashup of the best and the very worst expressions of humanity. I respond thusly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4gqomQ4YlE
Forward the message!
What I posted at #82 for the Reuters piece was copied and pasted from yahoo's homepage news headlines, not the actual article. It's the title of the link that leads to it and it's more than a little off, methinks. Wonder who is sitting there churning out the news headlines. Kind of a big typo.

YOU GUYS WILL SEE THOSE FOUR FACES GETTING OUT OF DODGE IN A HURRY - AND THEY WILL BE BOUND FOR PARAGUAY - WHERE, I MIGHT ADD, GW PURCHASED A 100,000 ACRE RANCH. THEY WILL RUN TO THAT COUNTRY AND LIVE UNDER THE PROTECTION OF AMNESTY. THANKS TO NANCY PELOSI WHO SAID "IMPEACHMENT IF OFF THE TABLE" - GWBUSH AND HIS MERRY BAND OF THIEVES WILL NOT SUFFER FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO AMERICANS - "WE THE PEOPLE" HAVE SUFFERED AND WILL SUFFER MORE.
I AGREE THAT THE PHOTO IS AN INSULT TO THE BEATLES - BUT BUSH AND CO IS QUITE AN INSULT TO THE AMERICANS AND THE SOLDIERS FIGHTING.

diana @ 64: Nancy Pelosi is reported to have replied to the question of impeachment that if she received 10,000 hand written letters she would proceed with it. What are we waiting for?"
Rumors will not change the facts. There are not enough votes to carry impeachment (-30 votes) and something like 40 Senators short of conviction.
It would go up, it would go down, and right before it is defeated it would be sent back to the HJC,
WHERE IT WOULD AWAIT NOT LETTERS TO THE SPEAKER, BUT TO ANY REPUBLICAN WHO MIGHT CHANGE THEIR ALLEGIANCE.

It's for real. They have bought up a very large tract of land next to the Parana river. Inland, no global warming danger, the second largest river in S. America, a righwing gov't with NO extradition, and friendly banks.

You are. You are talking about the Senate, and you say "Congress."
Well, we have more than SEVEN TIMES more loyal Representatives than Senators.
So when you say 'Congress' and you mean the Senate you are bashing something like 175 loyal Democrats for the actions of a handful. And that's propaganda. You don't want to spread propaganda, do you?

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Elliot D. Cohen
Amid public outcry, in 2003, Congress defunded the Bush Administration's Total Information Awareness (TIA) project, a massive Orwellian technology-driven surveillance and data mining initiative. Now, it is attempting to pass through the FISA Amendments Act of 2007 (S. 2248), a bill that would affectively give legal standing and retroactive legal immunity to a major component of this project.
That really is a slight against the Beatles. Ugh.
Judge orders White House to hold e-mails
By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer Mon Nov 12, 6:21 PM ET
WASHINGTON - A federal judge Monday ordered the White House to preserve copies of all its e-mails, a move that Bush administration lawyers had argued strongly against.
U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy directed the Executive Office of the President to safeguard the material in response to two lawsuits that seek to determine whether the White House has destroyed e-mails in violation of federal law.

Glenn Greenwald: Dianne Feinstein -- Bush's key ally in the Senate -- to support telecom amnesty
"Feinstein is not merely voting reliably for the most extremist Bush policies, though she is doing that. Far more than that, she has become, time and again, the linchpin of Bush's ability to have his most radical policies approved by the Senate."
Damn, that's practically sacrilegious.
They forgot Condi My Dear and Long, Long, Long War.
that graphic is just weird seems to have no meaning or place - worse it insults the beatles
And here's your song that goes with the Bushles Album: ‘A DAY IN THE LIFE (OF DUBYA)’
The thumbnail is upsetting in too many ways to explain
The election is just around the corner, so it's time to get fooled again!
Makes me laugh a little, Also is it me or is each character the polar opposite of the beatle they represent?

Truth’s Victory

[HA!]
In the wake of his
presidencyer election he has done all he can to make himself the 'imperial primeminister' modeling his behavior after his big hero, chimp boy.
John and George (Harrison) are rolling in their graves. This image is an insult to the Beatles.
A first glance I thought it was The BUSHLIES.
NICE.
Reuters: Report: 'Hidden costs' have driven price of wars up to $1.5 billion
WP:Dems: War Costs Top $1.5 Trillion
The Real Cost of Iraq is on the order of our national debt.

I want to see the Last Bush Supper. Can we schedule it for tonight?

Good Point Paul.
'Representative' is the official honorary for House members
'Senator' is the official honorary for Senate members
congress is a general collective term
no one was bashing 'congress'.
you read an awful lot into a single post. that makes me think something else was really bothering you and the post was just an opportunity for you to vent.
your cheering section doesn't help. it just means more people missed the point.

Kenny @ 94 "Post a source for your claim about a Paraguay ranch."
It's for real. They have bought up a very large tract of land next to the Parana river. Inland, no global warming danger, the second largest river in S. America, a righwing gov't with NO extradition, and friendly banks.
CoIntelPRo @ 87 "no one was bashing 'congress'."
CoIntelPro @ 76 "by your own acknowledgement the house is the house,
the senate is the senate and neither is properly called congress."
You are showing your ignorance.
Consider this. It is the 110th Congress. In 2008, it is will be the 111th Congress. Two year Congresses, but the Senate term is SIX YEARS.
Hmm.
Ouch. Now that hurts. Please, whoever you are, remove Cheney's face away from Mr. Lennons.
this photoshopjob is misplaced on this website....
what where you thinking?
you owe an apology to your audience...
That's just wrong. R-O-N-G, wrong!
