Mike's Blog Round Up

Yet more blog links for you from Bob Morris of the leftie enviro Politics in the Zeros.

Asymptotic Life cut carbon emissions in their home by a whopping 70% after doing an energy audit - saving money in the process too. Here's how they did it.

They went underground in another country to infiltrate groups carrying out terrorism in their country. When they discovered serious new plots, they notified law enforcement in that country - and for their trouble received harsh decades-long prison sentences. Yes, The Cuban Five still rot in US prisons.

Will Bloomberg run in 2008? (Talk about an 800 lb. gorilla...!)

Respect, the UK party co-founded by George Galloway MP, has fractured mostly due to machinations by the far left SWP. The resulting shambles is affecting their major antiwar coalition. Sigh.

Considering the droughts, maybe it's time to re-think golf courses in deserts?

After the first Gulf War we encouraged the Iraqis to go after Saddam, we had their back, then we stood by and watched them be slaughtered.

Iran had our back after 9/11 and helped us destroy the Taliban. As soon as it was done bush declared them part of the "Axis of Evil" and has threatened them with nukes and santioned them repeatedly.

In 2003 we had many Iraqis helping us, at a great danger to thereselves, and when they were done we told them to Fuck Off and gave them no sanctuary.

Now I read about the Cuban 5.

Why do they hate us again?

Considering the droughts, maybe it’s time to re-think golf courses in deserts?

Yes... grass golf courses and lawns in desert climates is the stupidest motherfucking idea ever. Green grass is meant for a wet climate (think of Scotland, ferchrissake!), and trying to keep it green in an environment where your hair completely dries in less than five minutes after stepping out of a shower only spells for disaster.

I've played on one course in Mexico, and they had it right for the climate it was in: the rough had various desert flora, the fairway was well maintained tamped dirt so that the ball wouldn't sink like in a sand trap, and the greens were artificial turf.

Re: Bloomberg, The Candidate

Mike Bloomberg had better s--- or get off the pot and soon. Maybe he's waiting to see if Al Gore will throw his hat into the ring before doing so. I've heard rumors about Mike picking up either Chuck Hagel or Arnold Swartz as his running mate. Time will tell.

Personally, with the number of "unaffiliated voters/aka independent voters" the heat will be on to return power to the people in 08. Thus far there is not one single candidate who appeases the Indy voter which is precisely why Bloomberg is considering a run.

Frankly -- and mind you, I'm saying this as a longtime resident of New York City -- I think that if Bloomberg decided to make a bid for the Presidency, he'd stand a more-than-decent chance of winning because I see him as being someone who potentially would have appeal to voters from both sides of the political spectrum. Like Giuliani, he's a Republican mayor of a large city which historically has been staunchly Democratic but he seems to be at least somewhat more moderate than Rudy (who finally succeeded in gaining my respect on 9/11 for grace under fire only to lose it again later on when information came to light strongly suggesting that previous lack of action on his part with regard to police and fire department radio communications played a part in the deaths of some of our Bravest and Finest on that day). Frankly, at this point, I'd be a bit more inclined to vote for Bloomberg than I'm inclined to vote for either of the alleged front-runners of my own party. Maybe the man doesn't have much experience in running a country, but it can't be denied that he knows how to run a business...and to my way of thinking, the fact that the man is known to take the subway like any working stiff in New York suggests that he has at least some of his priorities in the right place. Mind you, Bloomberg has his share of question marks -- one of the biggest being that with the staggering amount of money he threw into his mayoral campaign, some people see him as having virtually bought the election -- but if I absolutely had to choose between him and Rudy and Clinton or Obama, I'd give serious thought to choosing him.

Wow, you think they use drinking water on golf courses? Here in AZ the use reclaimed waste water whenever they can. Stop spreading irrational fear. Thanks.

AZ:
"Since golf courses use a lot of water, Scottsdale has developed strategies to minimize the impact they have on our water supplies. Scottsdale reclaims wastewater at the Water Campus, treating the water to irrigation standards. Golf courses pay all the costs to receive this reclaimed water for irrigation through the Reclaimed Water Delivery System (RWDS), which is the largest reclaimed water reuse system in the Valley.

The RWDS delivers reclaimed water, and some CAP water, to all golf courses along Pima Road north of the Loop 101. In addition, Council policy requires that any future golf courses must provide their own renewable surface water supply in order to locate in Scottsdale."

Vegas: "Homeowners use 65 percent of the area's water, and of that 75 percent is used outdoors, Bennett said. Golf courses use only 5 percent of the water."

California: "Recycled water is used in parks, medians and golf courses in Roseville. It's not for drinking, but it's perfect for irrigating grass, plants and trees. Best of all, its great for the environment because it lets us keep the grass and plants green without having to use drinking water."

Golf is elitist? I can play 18 holes for $6. It's a peaceful place to get in a good walk, with a bit of sport. I'm a progressive minded, water conserving fellow myself, but damn you people are prime examples of why we never win elections.

And I never meant to imply that ONLY rich elitist schwances play golf...just the vast majority have historically been rich elitist schwances.
As for the reason "we" never win elections...kinda difficult to win, when you consider all the dirty tricks the goopers used to steal the last 2 elections. But you are right about the irrational fear stuff...that's gotta stop.

Agree that golf courses in the desert are ridiculous. And there are few chemical-free courses (though they are slowly growing in number), but your uninformed views on who plays golf are incorrect. The vast majority of golfers are indeed enthusiastic about the game, and most are nowhere near being international power brokers. Over the past couple decades golf has become much more a sport of middle class types, in part due to Tiger Woods' success as a non-white in a (previously) typically lily white sport. And, yes, it can be boring to watch if you're not a fan, but then so is anything. Baseball can be very boring to those who don't follow it, but there's so much more strategy in it than there is in soccer, it's an intriguing combination of athletic skills and gamesmanship.

Also, I'd much rather watch golf than soccer, a sport I find painfully boring, yet whose fans look down their noses at those of us who couldn't care less about the World Cup. And soccer fans are the worst in all of sport. Don't agree? Name one other sport whose fans regularly partake in violence, and have in the past killed a player because of his mistake in a game.

So you don't have to watch golf, and I will never give a shit about soccer. But golf as an elitist sport for the uber-rich? That was decades ago. Update your info, dude.

Well, the big Annapolis Dog and Pony show is getting underway, with Bush and his incompetent sidekick Leezzaa, jumping through hoops and turning tricks for their boss, Olmert.

Israel is willing to give up land for the Palestinians to have an 'Independent Homeland'.
(The land they are willing to give up is located just below the sewers in Tel Aviv).

But one of Israel's 'Un-negotiable requisites' is that all arab nations and their Muslim citizens agree to do whatever Israel directs them to do, under threat of nuclear attack.

'Sounds like a sound basis for an equitable agreement', according to Leezzaa'

'Heh, heh, heh', according to Bush.

Preacher Boob's picture

The game of golf could become much more challenging, more interesting, more of a sport, and more 'Green', if played from floating pads on sewerage settlement ponds.

And, incidentally, save water.

Well, I'll be darned, I done went and larnt me sumthin today, shucky darn and slop the hawgs!
I still think golf sucks, and with few exceptions every golfer I've ever met, was a rich, or at least upper middle class, suv drivin, environment destroyin, GOP supportin, war hawkin sumbitch. And no, I'm not including you in that group. In MY personal experience, those are the types I will continue to associate with golf.Though I will admit I may well be wrong about the majority of golfers these days, but golf still sucks.

And as for soccer...the fans are fuckin nuts sometimes, but I love watchin it, especially on the latin channels, those people get into it. Makes the NFL look like...golf, and I loves me some NFL. Golf to me is pretentious, and just too damn quiet! For gods sake! Let's see someone get tackled, maybe if they mixed golf with hockey...I could MAYBE bring myself to watch it....Maybe...throw in some scantily clad women, and ya got a deal.
And sayin golf is an intriguing combo of athletic skills and gamesmanship...kinda reminds me of nascar fans sayin racing is like chess...riiiiiight!
But all this nonsense being said. I might change my tune about golf if I could just bring myself to play a game...

ysbaddaden's picture

You can buy a soccer ball, and basic clothes for under 50 dollars, but golf clubs can cost thousands, and some golfing clubs like St. Andrew you have to be invited to shell out all your cash.

Matt in Texas's picture

I would also LOVE to see scantily-clad women at golf tournaments, as well as some good old trash-talkin'. Among friends who play, it DOES in fact happen (trash-talkin', that is.)

Also, I believe you misread my post: I said that BASEBALL is a combo of skill and gamesmanship, not golf.

ysb - Straw Man Alert! Sure, golf clubs CAN cost thousands (like I could accuse you of being super rich, because you own a car and cars CAN cost hundreds of thousands), but you can buy decent used sets for well under $100, and there are plenty of public courses at which one can play for $10-$12.

Still can't afford it, but want to play? Many of those same public courses have loaner sets and sponsor underprivileged kids who show an interest in golf. I played free my entire high school years because I was on the school team (and not because I was any good) and our home course (a private course not affiliated with the school) supported us by waiving greens fees whenever we wanted to play. I could never have afforded it otherwise. That was in the late 1970s, and support such as that has exploded since then. It has become an everyman's sport, but like lots of sports, only the rich and extremely talented get noticed. Unfortunately with golf, most of the TV exposure is from exclusive courses, which are (mostly) the only ones who can afford to continually make the holes challenging for the top pros. Hence the perpetuation of its being elitist.

Insofar as "quiet" is concerned, years ago the Phoenix Open was known to be the rowdiest in golf, with shouting and hollering (though admittedly not during the swing) and fans loved it. Don't know whether it's calmed down in the last several years, but the potential for in-yer-face golf exists. Perrenial fan favorite John Daly is on his 4th wife, chain-smokes, drinks beer, doesn't exercise, and still hits the shit out of the ball. When his short game is also working, he's a threat to win every tournament he's in. He's loved not for his elitism, but for his earthiness and honesty.

Still, it's not to everone's taste, but it's not the stereotype from decades past. Look at the obvious: back in the 1980s, who would have ever thought a black man would be on track to become the greatest golfer ever? The times they are a-changin'.
