In the long run Drudge will be a unique phenomenon sandwiched between the birth of the Web and the Blogosphere. It was a special heyday when readers couldn't comment on what you said. Heck, you didn't even have to provide links to back up what you said. Drudge found he could just put someone on a new fangled thing called a web page and the media would go nuts over it. The damage he caused will be healed in time as he is slowly ignored.

On a technical note, Drudge has always had an auto refresh on his main page, so anyone leaving is page open for a while causes another "read". This artificially inflates his numbers. This has been known for a long time, but the media still reports on his large number of "readers" now and then, either too uneducated to understand or simply not caring about his deceit.

The only reich-wing logic to be gleaned here is that Rob refuted the silly claim that Drudge is 'becoming' irrelevant with statistical facts, one of the main yardsticks websites use to judge relevancy. There are countless other quotes from journalists and news organizations that attest to his relevancy, even if most of them do so grudgingly. Even Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton uses the guy's website to get information out about herself. There is no doubt about his relevancy or his popularity. You wouldn't be writing about him if he was neither. Most of what is written here about him is either jealousy or hathos.

As to the irrelevant Corvette vs Civic analogy, which would you rather have been a shareholder of these last 5 years, GM or Honda?
Is the New York Times a superior news distributor to Drudge? Probably. But which one is dying and which one is thriving?

I'd say for a guy with a limited educational background and kind of a screwed up youth, he's done ok for himself. Something that would normally be an admired trait for liberals if not for the fact he leans right.

Drudge currently has a series of stories up suggesting that bill clinton has flip flopped on the iraq war. Actually reading them shows that drudge is once again stretching the truth. Clinton in a Time article merely suggests that Bush was right to pressure the UN on Iraq, not right to invade. He specifically says he didnt agree with the time of that. As we all know we made the UN pull out the inspectors because we were impatient for war.
