Bob Schieffer Commentary: "Iraq Is Still The Place Where Americans Are Dying"

During his commentary on this morning's Face The Nation, Bob Schieffer urges caution when talking about peace in the Middle East and President Bush's surge in Iraq. Schieffer notes that while violence is reported to have gone down, the goal of the surge--which was to give the Iraqi government space to come together and start functioning--has been a complete failure and that the current presidential candidates need to focus more on Iraq since that's where Americans are still dying.

Damn, I *just* posted this on YouTube because it wasn't on here yet. :)
spread the word far and wide. And let's encourage Karl Rove to keep telling his side of the truth. Just like :"The Math" of 2006, Rove has got "The Iraq" of 2008 plan going full speed ahead.
"...the current presidential candidates need to focus more on Iraq since that’s where [Iraqis] are still dying."
fixed it
Yeah I watched this from Costa Rica. The whole world is watching
Flamethrower @ 2:
On "phox newzunday" this morning, Rove used the exact same reasoning on why "the Republicans will win in '08" as he did when he touted "the Republicans will win in '06"... "the National polls show wide margins, but in local candidate-vs-candidate polls, the races are MUCH closer."
And we all know how '06 turned out. If this is what Rove is relying on for '08, it's going to be a Democratic blowout. :)
I call bullshit.
Iraq is the place where Iraqi's are dying. Where is Bobs outrage at the deaths of so many people at our hands who are trying to repel our occupation?
Further, if american death is Bob's issue, where does he stand on sodium in packaged foods? A report indicates that as many as 130,000 (yes that would be 30 times as many as in Iraq) americans die every year unecessarily due to sodium levels in packaged foods. (Groups have tried to have sodium levels reduced since the '70s based on known health risks)
Where is Bob's outrage on this subject? Or do corporations get a pass from Bob 'american values' Shieffer.
and yet this is the most deadly year in Iraq .
mudshark @ 7:
agreed

....the current presidential candidates need to focus more on Iraq since that’s where Americans are still dying.
It's not exactly a party for the Iraqis, either. And lets stop this utter bullshit about how the "violence in Iraq is down". Hundreds of innocent of Iraqis are dying every month, and the point is NO ONE should be dying. We goosestepped in, destroyed their country physical and political infrastructure, and it's the IRAQIS fault that they can't put it back together? When is this bullshit line going to die.? The Democratic candidates are no better with "front runners" like Hillary and Obama blaming the Iraqis for the mess we made.
I still can't beleive they let him say things like this...but it is Sunday!!
found this link??
not the same guy is it?

anon @ 6:
I completely agree. I feel for the American military, but more Iraqis have died because of the unnecessary war than American solidiers. We do not even count the Iraqi deaths.
Off topic: What is with that police officer banner on the right? Am I the only one seeing it? I don't mind if it there and I know you probally don't control your banners, but it was a little surprising to see that on this website.
anon @ 6:
So we're not allowed to talk about Iraq until the salt epidemic has been cured? Give me a fucking break...
Watching. Everyones watching.
Question Blog @ 10:
so what.what are you trying to do here?....
I suppose you think your perfect....
Chris H. @ 11:
I think Bob's warning of claiming "Mission Accomplished in Iraq" again too soon is being lost here.
My only suggestion is don't rest your hopes on some miraculous Clinton Style 90's Economic boom and revival in 09. Easy money, glamorous high paying jobs for the pickin', cheap gas, easy loans and credit, lots of free time to blow away.
"violence is reported to have gone down."
Bullshit. Reported violence is down, not the level of violence, because they now report within a narrow band of parameters.
question Blog@10 .....you know your doing something right when you tart getting attacked.......you just proved it.
Why, not even Katie Couric could have said it better!
anon @ 6:
I call "attempted thread derail by shill." Nice imitation of the liberal stereotype with the "corporations" epithet though, but still transparent. You need to practice your Rovian tactics a bit more, kid.
The Politicians are gonna' save us!

No more golf dates for Bob!
no, no, no, it's not Iraqi's who are dying. We're killing Islamofascists!
Hey, bob, don't forget Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and here at home, in Ameristan, and countless other 'stans', all because of the callousness, and stupidity, and megalomania, of our home-grown dictator.
Roger Bixley @ 12:
Talk all you want. But if american deaths are your issue - Iraq isnt your cause.
And there is no salt epidemic. I believe salt is included in packaged foods to make it more economically viable (preserved) by extending its shelf life. And that is killing 30 times more americans each year than have been killed in Iraq since the beginning of time.
Shieffer is referring to the deaths of professional killers - soldiers. I find it odd that he laments the deaths of professional killers that have invaded a nation we had not been harmed by but ignores the deaths of innocents - Iragi and americans (at the hands of for profit corporations).
Its a shame that you find the loss of a beligerant while invading another country a problem and become testy when someone mentions the deaths of people who are doing nothing more than EATING. Corporations are killing people in HUGE numbers here in the US unecessarily for profit. Shieffer made the point regarding american deaths. I made the point that Shieffer is a hypocrit.
I also am saddened by the deaths of US soldiers. But they placed themselves in harms way. Their loss is lamentable but avoidable - stop invading countries. On the other had, people have to eat. Eating shouldnt kill.
For profit killing is never mentioned and amounts to a large fraction of a million deaths in the US a year.
If american life is as important to Bob as he would have you believe - that should get his attention. Sadly it doesnt.
EH @ 20:
I'm 56 and am not a democrat. I'm a socialist. You and the republicans can piss on each other all you want. Facts are still facts.
Shieffer values the lives of professional killers over most others. Its the nature of this country. Jessica Lynch was given honors and medals for chosing to learn to kill strangers to earn money for college so she could teach children. If she had chosen to give sexual pleasure to strangers to earh money for college so she could teach children, she would have been put in prison. Killing in the US gets you honors and medals. Sex (if you are a woman) gets you prison. This is Shieffers world. The professional killer is a shinning light. Sick in my opinion.
I stand by my post and I stand by those that are being killed for corporate profits and the Iraqis. Americans are dying in Iraq because people there are attempting to repel a foreign invader.
Your assumption that I am not a democrat is true. But you are wrong from there on.
As a military action, the suge is working in Iraq the same way the military battles in Vietnam worked.
Militarily, we didn’t lose a single battle in Vietnam. Did any of them “work”?
No.
It's pathetic that the democratic candidates have to be reminded by a TV pundit that
Americans are dying in Iraq and that they should pay attention to that.
I detest these idiot self-involved frontrunners.
The only ones expressing human feeling are Kucinich and Richardson.
Every time I see a photo of one of these so-called frontrunners with a big f-cking grin I want
to scream - "What are you smiling about - asshole."
Americans invaded Iraq remember! Over one million Iraqi people have died as a direct result of the pre-emptive invasion ( the neo-cons knew there would be a genocide if they did not send in enough troops to maintain peace) the neo-cons do not care.
Americans would rather watch the football games and go shopping than think about the 4 million Iraqi refugees and the one million dead that are a direct result of the invasion.
http://www.robert-fisk.com/iraqwarvictims_mar2003.htm
Bob forgot to, or at least failed to mention, the outrageous agreement the chimp is in the process of negotiating that we may be there forever, fighting their wars and squabbles.
He should have mentioned that, and then hammered it home.
Kathleen @ 31:
The neocons knew there would be e genocide if they didn't send in enough troops? Really? Did they see the future or something? Why have they not shared this mystical power with the world?
By the way, there were 4-5 million refugees from Iraq before the war, too...they had fled from the brutality of Saddam's rule. But I'm sure everything was all nice and rosy before we went in.
And if so many Iraqis are being killed by the insurgents, is this really an argument for abandoning Iraq to those insurgents rather than staying to try to clean up the mess we made and they exploded?
anon @ 6:
The deaths of so many people at our hands who are trying to repel the occupation.
Wait, I thought most of the violence was Iraq-on-Iraqi. You know, insurgents blowing up their own because they didn't like each other/didn't like the other guy's religion/wanted to convince us that Iraq was too unstable to win/wanted money.
Yes, I wonder why Bob is not more outraged at the insurgents who are perpetrating this insanity on their own people.
Straight Shooter @ 17:
You know, we don't ACTUALLY not count car bombs and people shot in certain parts of the head as dying from sectarian violence. That was a myth. Looks like you bought into it.
all this still doesn't change the fact that this has been the deadliest year in Iraq.
People actually believe the less violence lie. Until Americans realize they cannot believe anything they are being told by this administration we are going to continue losing soldiers and wasting billions in Iraq.
Iraq has been turned into an apartheid state but that is fine to the same media that gives airtime to whites only drinking fountainists like Tancredo
Bush the Liar @ 35:
Ok, so back up your statement that it's a lie with numbers to match all the independent numbers that verify the claim of decreased violence.
anon @ 6:
Bob and the entire wholly owned propaganda apparatus he's worked for his entire life is dying. Dying right before Amerikkka's befuddled eyes. Losing in Iraq, losing yer house, losing yer family. Losing all that cool shit you bought on yer credit card and no one cares.
Bob don't care; he just reads the words.
Hillary don' care; she's getting elected.
Bush don't care; that part of most humans which is responsible for 'caring'? He never got one.
When the fat dumb white sacks of meat who've been swallowing the lies that Ol' Bob and all the rest have been putting out all these years finally
vomit them back up....
Those lies will be covered with blood.
Sadly, it won't be Bob's blood.
Nobody truly gives a shit you see as long as the blood is from these people................
And not the white folks.
I wonder....
What would Jesus do?
Are they really 'killing their own' as many frequently state?
In 1921 two separate areas were combined to create Iraq. This would be the Sunnis (Baghdad and the Shias (Basra). In 1926 the northern part was added (Kurdistan).
So Iraqis are really not all 'the same people', having been held together by a dictator, and the question remains: Will any government form other than a dictatorship keep the whole thing together, or will they re-split into their original regions? Oil is in the way, so is the regional problem of the Saudis supporting the Sunnis and Iran supporting the Shias.
ronhohn @ 39:
There's more than just religious splitting here...the Iranians are Persian, the Iraqis (and Saudis) are Arab. So despite claims that all the Iraqi Shi'ites are on Iran's side, this is most likely not the case. In fact, one of the reasons Iraqis are able to speak out against Al-Sadr now is probably because he revealed himself to be Iran's lapdog by running to them when times got tough.
As you say, there are divisions between the Iraqi people that are flaring up now that Saddam is gone. However, there are also a lot of moves towards unification/reconciliation. The latest:
Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric calls for unity
We're doing the same thing in Iraq the Israelis are doing in Palestine.
Destroying people's homes, and whole cities. Taking their land and building our facilities on it. Segregating the people with concrete walls. Putting up innumerable 'checkpoints' (read: roadblocks) to prevent free movement. Punishing the families, and destroying the property of families, of those brave enough to oppose us. Bribing whoever we can to do whatever we wish, after reducing them to poverty, so that they must take whatever money they can find to feed their families. In short, we have become brutal oppressors, as well as amoral, brutal invaders.
Reducing violence!! Once we have everyone segregated with walls, unable to move freely, and reduced the population with our collateral-damaging 'smart bombs', and indiscriminate 'raids to find terrorists', and caused millions to flee their homeland, of course we'll have 'reduced violence'. There are fewer people to kill.
'Shock and Awe', indeed.
That's what the world is expressing at our actions.
And if the MSM and the neocon zionist administration hadn't so propagandized the US public, that's what we citizens would be expressing, and throw the bastards out!
Will you tell Nancy and Harry this important revelation, so as the next time they even think about giving Bush more of our money it will be flashing in their gutless faces to do the right thing and bring our kids home, buy NOT FUNDING ANY MORE MONEY.
You know what's great about GW? Nothing - not a damn thing. He did the "shock and awe" for only one reason. He wanted to revenge his father because Saddam "...tried to kill my daddy!" There never were wmd's.
The troop surge did not work and is not working. Why else are American soldiers being killed and look at the Iraqi people! They are dying by the 100's - 1000s. There is not such thing as "walking off the job". Once our military people are there, they have no recourse, but to "stay the course".
I am not as smart as the C&L responders, but I do know that I am appalled at the outright audacity of some of these comments. I'll just come right out and say it. Our troops need to come home and Bush/Cheney needs to be impeached, convicted of war crimes and put in lock down for the rest of their lives with no chance of parole, and their records to stay on the book for all eternity. If we don't get rid of these bastards, the next thing they will do is set up ovens in this country to get rid of the ones that don't agree with what they are doing. Because of the Patriot Act, our civil liberties have gone down the tubes and all of us must remember that GW called our constitution a "goddamn piece of paper" and remember this, the S.O.B. has set up a document that will make him a dictator.
So Bobby Scheiffer won't be happy until the Islamo Fascists in Iraq defeat the US Military. Just your typical anti-American Lib. Hey Bobby, take you defeatism and shove it where the sun don't shine, a-hole!!!
THANK GOD most of you morons weren't around during WWII or we would all be goose-stepping off to some arms factory every day and drinking saki on our breaks.
