Or is it Rudy's Shag Fund or "Sex on the City" scandal?

icon Download | play icon Download | play

Hannity thinks he has the answer for the wingnuttia's collective silence on Rudy's mounting ethical problems. He prefaces his response with his "on the record" hope for Hillary to become the '08 Democratic Presidential nominee thanks to a Zogby "interactive" internet poll that told him what he wanted to hear.

So, Hannity's rebuttal to growing evidence that a GOP Presidential front-runner's blatant misuse of his office to get NYPD detectives to taxi his mistress & co. all over the place and even NYPD cops to walk her dog at taxpayer expense is --- wait for it --- two words: "Sandy Berger"

Really? That's like throwing down a pair against a full house (or if gop voters have any principles at all it'll be more like a royal flush) and trying to grab the pot. He can't muster one word in defense of Rudy Giuliani so he resorts to the right-wing's most worn out and blatantly over-hyped scandal response catch-all? Do you ever get that feeling that we're playing chess, with serious real life consequences no less, against people too stupid to understand checkers?

Ummm, I think it's supposed to be:

against people too stupid to understand checkers?

Yeah, the Sandy Berger line was weak (bordering on retarded), but you should read your post before clicking send, especially when you're zapping some idiot for being stupid.

As I recall, it was was Hillary's great-aunt Catherine O'leary's cow that started the Chicago fire.

Feh!

Sandy Berger's name has become the new "uh" when repubs speak. Just fill in the silent part of the speech with his name whether it has any meaning to the subject at hand or not.

So because of what Sandy Berger did we should ignore anything Rudy did? Yeah, that makes as much sense as any other tripe coming from the right.

Ahh but you see, this would require introspection. Something the current crop of rethuglicans have shown themselves utterly incapable of.

foolme1ns's picture

well the trouble with Hannity's oh so impressive "rebuttal" is that most Americans have no idea who Sandy Berger is, AND don't care.

Sure they recognize the name Hillary Clinton, but Sandy Berger? Not so much.

I agree. They are in trouble and since they are a one trick pony they only know one trick, and it is old and tiresome.

More proof the right has nothing going for them.

Joe O.'s picture

As usual Hannity makes excuses for a con man. The problem with making excuses for any candidate is that they will do even more crooked things because they know they will get away with it. It is people like Hannity that always bring to power an oppressive regime because they do not have the guts to call those candidates on even the seemingly small things.

Chris's picture

Until last Thursday, I wasn't sure which Republican candidate was Fox's choice. Clearly, Thompson had discovered he was not. Hannity has always been hot for Giuliani, but when Bill O'Reilly said this about a mayor of a sanctuary city (the lowest form of life after liberal judges and George Soros), I knew the fix was in:

Governor Romney put forth that Mayor Giuliani presided over a sanctuary city in New York; the mayor then accused the governor of running a 'sanctuary mansion' because some illegal aliens had worked at Romney's Massachusetts home. Here's the truth - like most Americans, Governor Romney doesn't personally check the papers of people working for him, so that's an unfair criticism by Giuliani. However, the mayor is correct in saying that he did what was best for the city of New York. When Giuliani was first elected in 1994, violent crime was out of control and the NYPD had no time to track illegals. So I think it's fair to cut Giuliani some slack.

Can anyone find an example of anyone that O'Reilly felt deserved "slack" for deliberately not reporting illegals to the feds???

Berger was one of (the last?) Bill Clinton's National Security Advisor. He pled guilty(in 2005) to a misdemeanor for removing classified documents from the National Archives(in 2003) while preparin' to testify before the 9/11 Commission.

Here's what I find funny about Hannity's crack: I consider myself a political junkie. Not encyclopedic, but I know who's who. But I wouldn't be able to recognize Berger if ya showed me a picture of him surrounded by the rest of the Clinton cabinet with which he served. To me, he's just a name. And if I hadn't had a previous memory of his name, I'd swear the GOP screech machine just made the name up.

RepubAnon's picture

Sean Hannity believes that it is OK for Republicans to divert taxpayer money for their own immoral pleasures because at some point some Democrat allegedly committed some crime? Does this mean Sean Hannity believes that the question of whether any given action is right or wrong depends not on the act itself, but only on how that act compares to the wrongs ascribed to others? Isn't this "moral relativism"? I guess that makes Sean Hannity a lefty by O'Reilly-level logic... so can we expect Sean to start popping up on Faux News labeled as a "Democrat Consultant"?

Wouldn't it be more "values-oriented" for Rudy to "take responsibility" for his own actions and leave the race? Oh, that's right - IOKIYAR (It's O.K. If You're A Republican).

There is never a time to play defense in politics. Never. If you're opponent is vulnerable on ANY point, attack him on it mercilessly. If he attacks you on some point, don't explain why he's wrong-- ATTACK him on the same point.

PERFECT analogy! "We're living in a world of 'chess', and the repugs are too simple to understand the concept of checkers." ...more or less. This sums up my evaluation of the whole repug world in dealing with issues. "less taxes is better", "send 'em all back to Mexico", "nuke 'em, or blow the shit out of 'em", "they need a father to be on the road to success", and so on and so on.

I could shoot all these dumb ass and dense statements down in a heartbeat with complications they don't care to confuse their simple minds with, but it's a waste of time. Much like vannity and his kind, they like to bloat out simple ass, self righteous statements that don't take into account real life situations that are much more complex than they are capable of dealing with. I have a few relatives in the fold that fit the bill. They'll write off someone cause they are gay, or they had a child out of wedlock, or they are an "illegal", or whatever fits their simple minded world. This is what we are up against.

And then they call us "progressives" and we think we are so smart, etc. It's because they are so f*cking dumb, not that we are smart. Heartless, marching in a straight line, selfish sons and daughters of bush. Just idiots really, and so easy to persuade to march to their ruin, and take us with them.

I believe this is what it comes down to. It's much easier to just nuke somebody than to actually try to work out issues with "diplomacy". Too complicated and sometimes takes compromise. They aren't good at that, in fact, they hate that.

They can be "good people", but just damned simple minded fools. I'm pretty convinced of it. Granted, there are some that selectively extract bits of information and make "intelligent decisions" based on their selective thinking...but these are just fools that refuse to listen to reason and reality.

God, I'm so smart!

You guys don't understand. We have only won 30% (3 out of 10) Presidential elections since 1968. Being smart does not win elections in this country, and being stupid does not lose them.

A far better analogy is provided by the game of Monopoly. We are like a smart person, with just $50 in the bank, playing Monopoly against a stupid person with many thousands of bucks in his bank, who also owns all of the hotels and railroads (and media outlets) on the board.

Oh and by the way, in this version of Monopoly, in addition to collecting ever more rent money from the losers, the leader has the power to re-write the rules of the game to tilt things further in his favor.

America is not a Democracy, nor is it an IQ-ocracy. It is a DOLLAR-ocracy. My friends, let us begin to use our intelligence to understand the nature of the game we are playing.

Amitola's picture

Rudy or Hillary.....doesn't matter, we, the citizens of America and the world, lose either way. All of the people running for President on both sides are corrupted, some more than others. It's not possible to even be in a position to think about running for high political office in this country unless you have the support (sic money) from corporatists, lobbyists, elitists, whatever. They all have to "pay the piper" at some point, by creating and following policies that are only in their interest, not for the greater good of the people.

Even if a an actual American hero emerges, someone who speaks truth to power and is willing to try and reverse the slide into fascism, s/he will never get elected (look at how cleverly we "elected" Bush twice, without even voting for him). And, if somehow the rigged voting machines fail or the Supreme Court won't go along, and an honest, hard-working, intelligent person were to be elected - well they have ways of dealing with that, too.

It's getting harder and harder to be an optimist, but I keep hoping a real leader will step out from behind the curtain.

Just how much cesspool are you willing to wade into to. The discomfort obvious in their faces as they trump up these vacuous shadow games and they are wading in deep and it really stinks. Keep talking and keep spinning. Here is a wingless reality smacking down a right or left wing spin. hannity is the emptiest suit of them all.

So Hannity will bash Hillary but Giuliani bashing is off limits?

Sandy Berger? So that's the sign of the "character" party? Not to hold their own put to say "well he did it" (he stuck it in his pants??? .. gees they are the "5 year old party for sure"

Oh btw where did MARRIED Rudy stick his?

BTW I have noticed that when Republicans don't hold other Republicans accountable for infidelity, it usually means their getting some on the side too. So who you banging besides your wife Sean?

But you have to remember that most people only pay attention to the sound bites, and the right is MUCH better at angry sound bites than the middle or the left. They've got "righteous indignation" down to an art form, even when they're drawing with crayons. We need "righteous truth" whenever they spew their crap, and we need to have it distilled down to sound bites that people can grasp.

The best thing possible for progressive politics would be that idiots like Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh keeping carrying the torch for republicans. They continually make fools of themselves. More and more moderates are being peeled away from the republican party as they wake up to the monolithic and hateful drumbeat these idiots put out there. I can only cheer each time Hannity says something stupid.

Right. I don't think it's quite time for progressives to sit back on our laurels and talk about how smart we all are. I've heard this exact same phrase uttered the opposite way here on C&L and I tend to agree that it's really the other way around. I think that progressive citizens are much more astute than the democratic politicians. Too bad our party hasn't caught up because until they do, the republicans generally run rings around the dems.

boy howdy, that show is just unwatchable. Natterting, chattering, interrupting talking over the top of of everyone --except when high priest Sean begins to opine, then a respectful silence. Colmes is treated like the kid from the mail room allowed to sit at the table to give the impression that the execs are "listening" and have an open door policy. He couldn't complete one sentence without sean and the two bimbos turning away and ignoring him while they continued to chatter aimlessly.

I got a headache from listening to that short clip and leanred nothing more than that I am wise to not own a TV.

This is probably the most cogent and articulate description of the show that I have ever seen. Kudos.

It's more like playing a game of taikyoku shogi against someone who doesn't understand tic-tac-toe.

Yes - thank you. Those of you patting yourselves on the backs for being so fucking brilliant can get the fuck over yourselves. Until we start consistently winning elections and un-politicizing the courts and getting this country back on track toward progressive values, the joke is going to be on us. Stop with the "they're so dumb" bit and think about getting our message across to the majority of Americans in a way that resonates with them.

then why has murdick decided to back billary?

Because she is DLC republican-lite, all the way through.

Rupert may be evil, but he's not stupid. And he knows any Dem is going to have an advantage going into 08', (especially after the fiasco of Bushboy's reign of incompetence). Not only that, but she would be the easiest candidate for the repukes to beat. So it's a win-win for the old prick.

If Hillary is nominated, she is the easiest to beat.
If she wins it all, she's the closest thing to a neocon he's going to get from the democrats.

It may be cynical, but it's also the smart-money bet. And one thing we know about Rupert, is that he's always takin' care of his money interests.

Going on the assumption that all Repugs are liars, I conclude that they are actually terrified of Hillary Clinton. Seems Sean and his ilk are going out of their way to discourage Dem voters from supporting her. Why else would they neglect to mention the Gallup poll which comes to the opposite conclusion. Seems like it would make more sense to push Gallup results into the forefront if you actually wanted your boy to run against Hillary.
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2007/11/clinton_would_l.html

Hillary would be far down my list of Democrats I'd vote for in the primary, but I'll tell you one thing, that Zogby poll Hannity is quoting in the clip is total Republican fantasy. I mean, Zogby is generally skewed to the right, but they've outdone themselves on this one.

Mike freaking Huckabee beats Hillary by 5% in a national election?! LMAO! They must only be polling Republicans in rural Arkansas. Hell, probably less than 25% of the people in the US have even heard of Mike Huckabee.

Yes, Hillary brings some serious negatives in the sense that she would fire up the Republican base in a general election, but she has some upside too. And I'm saying this as someone who will be voting Edwards or maybe Obama in February.

No doubt she'd draw a lot of women to the polls, and a lot of African Americans too, especially with Bill campaigning. In fact, I understand Hillary still generally outpolls Obama among a lot of African American voters.

http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2007/11/black_...

Anyway, the point is that, like it or not, Hillary would be a very formidable nominee in November, and this jive about her losing to Huckabee or Fred "Snooozzzze" Thompson or pretty much any of this sorry-ass grab bag of Republican candidates, is Fox News La-La Land "Up is Down" wishful thinking.

No I don't get the feeling that we're playing chess against people playing checkers.

Progressives abide by election rules. Progressives abide by constitutional rules. Progressives abide by international law. Progressives abide by journalistic rules.

Conservatives do whatever the hell they want.

I get the feeling that progressives are playing a game that the conservatives on the other side pretend there are no rules *they* are bound by. And the major media outlets, and the beltway insider crowd, goes along with it. Allowing them to continue to flaunt the very rules that allow us to live and work together peacefully.

JJohnson @ 10:

I'm going to sound idiotic for this but:

Who the heck is Sandy Berger?

I've never heard of this person. (I'm not kidding! Please educate!)

Ahhh I see.

Wow that is pretty sad if that's all they've got. I mean if it were at least a felony it might be something... but especially in preparation to testify to the 9/11 commission...

I won't discuss Hannity's comments, but Sandy Berger STOLE classified one-copy only documents from the National Archives (stuffed them into his socks to sneak them out of the building), ended up stashing them in a construction site for a while, then confessed to having destroyed them later. He plea-bargained his way down to "mishandling classified documents" for which he received probation and is not allowed access to classified material for 3 years. Anyone else with access to classified material would have been thrown UNDER the jail for this offense. Sandy gets a slap on the wrist and is working for Hillary's campaign advising on National Security issues.

So, we have a former national security advisor who destroyed Clinton administration documents related to terrorism/national security, who is now advising Hillary on issues of national security. This reeks of coverup (bad decisions by Bill, with Hillary possibly involved?) and a quid pro quo to the guy who did the deed and took the rap.

So you are upset at the justice and judicial system under Bush for only giving Berger a $50,000 and making him perform community service (imho that's hardly a slap on the wrist) especially for a former national security adviser who still had clearance and no prior record and pled guilty to a crime he committed more than a year after he worked for Clinton. You must be REALLY FREAKING PISSED OFF at what Scooter Libby did and the punishment he got and even more so about other leakers like Rove who got away scot-free with destroying the career of a civil servant and breaking up a longstanding covert operation to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction just to get back at her spouse for pointing out that they were lying about the reasons they were going to send our soldiers to fight and die for.

If we don't nominate a goddamned Clinton, we take away 3/4 of the Republicans' ammo. Clinton's the only candidate they'd have a prayer of beating, because they've been rehearsing for it for almost a decade.

Hillary Clinton - Official Candidate Of The New World Order. Take it to the bank. Why else would the oh-so-liberal media have been cramming her down our throats since day negative fifteen? She's bad, bad, bad news. Break the cycle. Vote for someone not named Bush or Clinton. Rocket Science this is not.

Couldn't agree more.

I agree, and I wonder why even the most ardent Hillary supporter doesn't accept this. It would be one thing, if we didn't have any good Dems on the ticket. I know it's unfair that after many years and billions spent, we can't separate Hillary the Republican Myth, from the reality -- whatever that is. But the fact remains, she is the ONLY Dem that a Republican can beat -- so what is the point? You shouldn't have a Democrat who can't win the election. You don't, of course, trade Kerry for Dean -- like we were hoodwinked about in a prior election.

Hillary MIGHT be a great president -- or she could be Republican light, and do NAFTA 2.0. I don't think we have time and enough America left to diddle with this experiment with the great Conservative failures of the 20th century any more. Let's try it with a real Democrat, the way all the big problems were tackled in the past. And I only trust someone who has been fighting the "good fight" against corruption and corporate fascism -- that person to me is Dennis Kucinch. I could live with a lot of other Dems on the ticket. But the LEAST sure-things for me are the two Republican light candidates; Hillary and Obama. Next, even though I think Biden is about the smartest foreign policy wag around -- I don't trust him because he didn't really stand up to Republicans before it was safe.

So, the best pitch against Hillary? "Why take the chance?"

Daniel's picture

When I saw this site "CrooksandLiars.com", I first thought that it must be about the Clintons and their acolytes.
As one that once worked with government agencies I am familiar with the fact that at the end of a fiscal year they try to use up all the moneys available in all their offices. They do this so that no agency is left with extra money because when this happens that agency is given less money in the next fiscal year. It does make sense that Giuliani's security detail would have been paid with moneys left in diverse coffers. It all gets sorted out in the new fiscal year. And it also makes sense that Giuliani needed security at all times since the Mob almost put a contract on his head. After all he ferociously went after them and cleaned the floor with their nasty behinds. The people who tried to turn this into a scandal know this but they are depending on the ignorance of the general public to disparage Giuliani. They do not need every body to believe the lie, just enough to sway the vote.
To believe that Clinton is not at the very least an abuser of women you'd have to believe that several Democrat women have been lying about his crimes for over a decade. Isn't it funny that every body believes that the women are the liars unless they have the DNA that proves otherwise?
