So much for our great liberal pundits. Condi Rice has been one of the most ineffective Secretaries of State in the history of America, but just because she was able to put together the Annapolis peace conference, Clift believes if a Democratic nominee is elected president, they should give her a job. It's mind boggling. And Eleanor has written some very good pieces.

icon Download | play icon Download | play

Clift: ....it may not bear fruit, but frankly the next administration, especially if it's a Democratic one---if she really is putting her heart and soul into this they ought to give her a job in the next administration. This has to continue.

Ahhh, she gets an A for effort and a job if she's really trying. Glenn Greenwald says it perfectly.

It really never ceases to amaze how the most aggressive smear jobs on Democrats who take a stand against the Bush Administration almost always come from the allegedly liberal pundits or anonymous Democratic consultants.

And then there's this:

BEN-VENISTE: Isn’t it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6 PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States."

We cannot deny that this IS a monumental moment. Whether or not Condi had a great deal to do with it, or whether both sides are just getting sick of this damn Capulet-Montegue crap is still questionable.

John Edwards vowed Monday to include Republicans in his Cabinet if he's elected president.

"Here's why: because I'm looking for the strongest, most capable, most independent-minded people I can find. I want people around me who will say, 'You're wrong about this, and you could do grave damage if you do it. Mr. President, you need to change your mind,' " he said. "Because I'm not perfect, I'm capable of making mistakes."

Unbelievable. Oh, well. He was my go-to candidate but now he's lost *my* vote. Too bad.

It's worth thinking about. We don't know if Rice has been ineffective because of her orders or her tactics. Madeleine Albright had a very high opinion of her. Foreign policy isn't a partisan issue (unless you are some wacko fundamentalist right wing nut-case who wants to christianize the world,) and it would be nice to heal some of the divisiveness here today.

It might be fun just to see the right wing pundits immediately start to knee-cap her, or maybe even try to blame the attacks of September 11, 2001 on her because she was the NSA head.

On the other hand, she probably is as incapable as anyone in the current administration. And our real problem in foreign policy is the influence of corporate power, and Rice seems deaf to that tune.

It's also obvious they don't know how to run an economy. Their main interests are greed, cronyism and power. On the other hand, I'm listening to NPR. They have a candidate forum with most of the candidates. Clinton sounds incredibly boring. Obama sounds good. Edwards took his first speaking opportunity to criticize Clinton. That's getting old in my book.

Condi's first test came early in her tenure as National Security Adviser: a dire warning from the intelligence community entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike inside US". She failed, even (especially) if given credit for effort. A year later and she's running around peddling the "mushroom cloud" scare. Let her go back to Exxon and they can rename another ship after her: the Exxon Mediterranean (formerly the Exxon Valdez); there is an amzaing parallel between the catastrophic oil spill on Alaska and Condi's ruinous effect on American foreign policy.

Statements by National Security Advisor Rice.
Between September 8, 2002, and September 28, 2003, National Security Advisor Rice made 29 misleading statements about the threat posed by Iraq in 16 separate public appearances. Although Ms. Rice had the fewest public appearances and the fewest misleading statements, she had the highest number of statements — 8 — that were false. ...

Thatnks for the clarification but since I don't think that *any* republican is qualified, based on past performance, to be in a 2008 cabinet, that leaves Independents. Hmmm...like....Joe Lieberman. Can you imagine if that loser was rewarded with a job by a Dem president? It's an insult.

Years ago in my former life I engaged in political discourse on Morningstar ( a financial website) and when I heard Condi Rice was to be National Security Adviser I freak.
Her backgound was Soviet Eastern European affairs.
Hey I thought, isn't the Cold War over? Even a dunce like me knew the Middle East would become our greatest challenge.
911 should have proved how really clueless Rice was.
So what does the Village Idiot do, name her as Secretary of State which is par for the course of this Administration but for a news person, liberal or conservative with a grain of sense should know Rice is about as an effective diplomat as Howdy Doody.
Actually Howdy was a much better representative for America.

Too bad.

This is the first time I've heard Edwards say anything that didn't sound like it was designed specifically to appeal to a demographic. This interest in multiple opinions is a great asset in my book.

On the other hand, I'm listening to NPR. They have a candidate forum with most of the candidates. Clinton sounds incredibly boring. Obama sounds good. Edwards took his first speaking opportunity to criticize Clinton. That's getting old in my book.

Very unequal time unfortunately. I don't even know if Dodd is there because I haven't heard him. Kucinich is there, but I think he only spoke once.

That's the problem, Obama ALWAYS sounds good, looks good and can talk a good debate. But to me, he's not the candidate that will drive the necessary changes into cutting the US from the BushCo cancer.

We need at president who is a Democrat hard-liner that has a solid plan to help eliminate/reduce Global Warming, restore and improve US domestic infrastructure like the US economy and health insurance, get us out of Iraq & work on restoring our dimplomatic international relations and restore the Constitution. Republicans are not interested in any of the above, so please Democratic presidential hopefuls, don't put them in cabinet positions!

BTW, I must mentioned that I am a woman of color and many of us (as polls have shown) are not convinced with Obama's positioning, despite how phenomenal I think it would be to have a black president. But as Condi "Cancer Cell of the US" Rice has proven, black is just a color.

I think Obama will clearly fold to the Rethugs & Christo-fascists and he proved that with the Donnie McClurkin issue and his favoring bipartisanship, among not presenting a solid convincing plan to cut the BushCo cancer out.

Unbelievable. Oh, well. He was my go-to candidate but now he's lost *my* vote. Too bad.

It worked for Lincoln. Maybe I'll take another look at Edwards.

Yeah, I'm going to assume that it is sarcasm on the part 'o the Walrus. It really WOULD be foolish to rule such things out. Even the zealous Ron Paul supporters could even have a role... Attorney General perhaps (rooting out goverment corruption, etc.). You can't rule out ALL Republicans; the problem is basic idiocy and psychopathy not someone's preferences on capital gains tax or abortion. My thoughts on abortion manage not to interfere with my work, and these people do serve at the pleasure of the president.

Edwards is planning BIG changes to the bloated Bush corruption machine. He'll need support in both corners, and good TECHNICIANS in the technical areas, regardless of their historic party affiliation. (Once could even argue that rewarding SANE Republicans would be smart, and help shift the Red team back towards sanity from the "loyal Bushies" and fanatical Christofascism.) Here's a wacky damn idea: DON'T HIRE F'ING POLITICAL HACKS FOR EVERY SINGLE JOB! There are many "regular" (basically not political) Republicans out there that are very good in their respective fields.

And to be fair the quote was:

if she really is putting her heart and soul into this

That's *IF*. A stretch that a loyal Bushie wouldn't have an ulterior motive, I know. But if she somehow DID make progress on a meaningful and lasting peace between Palestine and Israel? WTF! You would NOT break that up if you hand a single brain cell. Even if Charles Manson was doing the negotiations... if it's working, just stand by with a cattle prod and wait till he's done! Not going to happen, but in theory, Clift isn't too far off base. We've started over for each president 3 or 4 times now. We may not get many more chances.

More to the point, it is her huge blind spot. If you look back, she almost always supports the woman for the job. Not the best candidate for the job, just the woman. Any woman. Pretty much the WORST thing you could do for feminism, but that's just my opinion.

This shit head of a disgrace we call our "secretary of state", has been just one more embarrassment to this country. A do nothing secretary of state. Clifts unfortunate statement doesn't reflect a lot of what she has to say, which is often right on (at least the McGlaughlan Report show stuff). The only thing I can say is that it seems that Condi is on the right side of the issue regarding the US' potential attack on Iran. I could be wrong, but I think she is advocating for the anti-Cheney position on that issue. Unfortunately, like Colin Powell her change of heart is too little too late with regards to Iraq as well as the Israeli-Palistine peace process (which is the key to a stable middle east in my opinion) Please correct me on this (the Condi opposition to the Cheney crowd's attack Iran strategy) if I am wrong, I don't remember the source of this information so I don't want to maintain this idea if it is not correct

Thanks for the reasoned post. I agree that I'd rather have someone who would push real change. I like Kucinich on that basis. Of the top three, I think Obama is most likely to do the unpopular, though right thing. I mean, Edwards was cowed into voting for the Iraq war. Even Hillary has shown more backbone when it counts (e.g. when being attacked during Clinton's term).

I listened to more of the Dem debate on NPR (by the way, the announcer said they wanted to have a Republican debate too, but all of the candidates had schedule conflicts!) and Edwards was in full stump mode, never giving a direct answer to a question. On the issue of our relations with China, he kept on bringing up that his father worked in a textile mill, and those jobs are gone; but when the announcer said (I paraphrase), "textile jobs have traditionally been in developing countries, don't you think that policy designed to hold onto those jobs is self-defeating?" all he could say was stuff about his dad working in a mill.

Check out Rice's comments on Iran, and ask yourself: Should she be given any job?

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2006 –

A "tremendous" coalition of countries remains united in its stance against nuclear weapon development in Iran, a situation sparking increasing international concern, said the nation's senior diplomat today. [coalition based on fraud.]

"The Iranians now need step back, look at where they are, see that they're isolated on this issue, and return to a state in which they go back and seal the activities that they have begun, ... and get back into negotiations with those who are prepared to offer them a course for civil nuclear power," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on ABC's "This Week." [Isolated based on illusions.]

Rice was referring to the country's resumption of enriched uranium research, which can lead to the production of nuclear weapons. [Which had ended three years prior in 2003.]

Iran's president, Mahomoud Ahmadinejad, has publicly disavowed the intent to produce nuclear weapons, claiming the country is trying to produce nuclear energy. However, the president now is saying that Iran is considering a withdrawal from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which restricts the possession of nuclear weapons. [The NIE confirms this effort was not related to a weapons; NIE concerned Iran would withrawing -- but Iran wasn't a signatory.]

"The really remarkable thing over the past several months is there is really now a tremendous coalition of countries saying exactly the same thing to Iran," Rice said. "The 'permanent five' - the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain and France - are united with countries like Brazil and India and others." [Coalition based on lies, just like in Iraq.]

And the International Atomic Energy Agency board of governors has reported the Iranians up to the U.N. Security Council, Rice said. [Doesn't matter what the facts are, just get anothe hearing.]

With a consensus among nations, Iran is only isolating itself with its actions, Rice said, adding that Iran still has the option to pursue a peaceful nuclear program. [Consensus based on lies.]

"The Russians have given them a proposal; the Europeans gave them a proposal," Rice said. "The question is, will they be allowed to have technology that could lead to a nuclear weapon?" [Why would "more proposals" -- to stop doing what they haven't started -- mean anything?]

Rice said the answer is clear. "They've been lying to the international community for 18 years," the secretary said. "An Iran with a nuclear weapon would be a threat - a grave threat - to international peace and security." [No, Bush was lying. Rice was lying. Then accusing Iran of lying.]

Rice said it is vital that Iran "get back into good graces with the IAEA and get back into negotiations with those that are prepared to offer them support." [They never left the "Good graces" of the IAEA. The US did leave the "good graces" when it illegally invade Iraq.]

In the meantime, Rice emphasized that the United States remains dedicated to a diplomatic approach, despite reports that the government is considering other avenues, such as a show of force. [Dedicated based onlies. Show of force after 2006 based on false information.]

"We believe a diplomatic approach as the one we now anticipate ... will give us a way to resolve this problem," the secretary said. "The president never takes any of his options off the table ... but there is a diplomatic solution to this. [There was no problem to resolve, Rice.]

This woman is so disappointing in her roll that I can't think what job she should have after this. It certainly shouldn't be a government job. My guess is that her next stop will be as a highly-paid, very visible member of some conservative think- tank and a speaker on the Republican circuit.
