Why after all that torture and interrogation has new info about the perpetrators of 911 come out? namely the money trail.
What if the interrogations did work, but we did not like who was fingered by the suspects?
there is a theory that the interrogations revealed evidence about Saudi and Pakistani involvement.
But that would be way awkward for Bush's war on terror.
It can't be to protect the identity of the torturers because all the Abu Gharib photos made it out just fine. Only the grunts got busted.

I guess the media is paying attention to this story. But that may only be because they are trying to distract from Bush's blatent lie regarding intelligence on Iran. What a clusterfuck.

At this point I would put nothing past our govt. It makes me so sad to feel this way and say that, :(

Of course the tapes have been destroyed!!! Please tell me no one is naive enough to think otherwise! This is the Bush Regime we're talking about, right?

jr's picture

the BDSM fetishists memory hole backhoe is always at work

No one is going to believe they lost these tapes but felt they had to destroy the others for security reasons.

curtilingus's picture

Dana Perino can vouch that she isn't sure if the president was informed of the destruction of the tapes.
But she cannot vouch for others in the white house.

Ok is she only privy to info to and from Bush?
Does Bush have anything to do with the day to day operations of the Whitehouse?
She is the Whitehouse spokesperson, not the president's spokesperson.

No, but now that they've been asked about, I'm sure the CIA will get right on destroying those tapes too!

doesn't it though?

I get so upset talking to any Republican who is so ignorant they don't even know they (and their party of choice) are not supporting America or the American Military or anything having to do with the American Dream (not to mention what their doing to us, the American people). And I ask my Republican friends, don't you remember when American stood real justice and not this neo-con-nightmare?

But to me it seems that the right-wing have been screwed around for so long that they don't know what's what anymore...and have forgotten what America is all about. And that make me weep!

Stop!
Over here!
Look, another distraction!

I read Cenk on HuffPo too. Generally he's spot on and this is no exception. However, maybe it wasn't a mistake that they destroyed the tapes.

You know serious discussion goes down at a high level before the destruction of important evidence at the CIA. The bottom line is that they had to consider the worst possible scenario for tapes that show torture: that would be having them leaked out to the internet. Arguably, that would be a greater disaster for the CIA than being prosecuted for destroying them. The simple reason is that if the whole world saw that stuff it would topple the house of cards.

That's exactly why the Bushies have fought so hard to preserve the secrecy of the techniques. All that junk about the knowledge falling into "enemy" hands is, of course, pure BS. The real showstopper would be if that kind of material fell into the PUBLIC's hands. The White House of Cards would unravel.

That is why they cannot have an AG that admits that waterboarding is torture, because if the AG does that, it pulls the ripcord and the whole mess unravels.

We are looking at simple case of CIA playing CYA. They didn't have any good choices, so they acted to avert the worst possible scenario, knowing that taking such action would result in the no. 2 worst scenario.

The CIA can survive some administrative heads being lopped off (they can replace those), but they could not weather an Abu Ghraib style scandal blamed directly on them.

Bush Declares Himself Dictator

Sen. Whitehouse has had three opinions declassified that summed up say:

1. "I don't have to follow my own rules, and I don't have to tell you when I'm breaking them."
2. "I get to determine what my own powers are."
3. "The Department of Justice doesn't tell me what the law is, I tell the Department of Justice what the law is."

senator sheldon whitehouse - part 1

senator sheldon whitehouse - part 2

Please get this information out to as many blogs as you can. There has been a coup.

Speaking of Dana Perino Chow. Can someone please let us know what Bush Chenny does during the day. They sure don't attend congress or the Senate.

The recent hullabaloo over the 'Torture Tapes' has caused an agency-wide directive to be issued, to 'Destroy all tapes immediately after taping'.

Which raises the question, should the 'I' in 'CIA' be changed to 'S', for 'Stupidity'?

To reduce the federal deficit, why not just eliminate the taping?

To square away the whole federal budget, why not just eliminate the CSA?

Preacher Boob's picture

If the Padilla tapes aren't on YouTube, they no longer exist.

GG's picture

Maybe they only destroyed 18 minutes worth.

Here is what we all know they destroyed.

george has gut feelings, i have a gut feeling. mine is that there are tapes out there that will hang this regime.
like the nazis and the stasi they can't resist being bureaucrats even if it means recording their own crimes.
they may not all turn up but the tapes are there. problem is, when will they turn up.
we need a very brave whistle blower.

You noticed that too huh?

Bush lies about intelligence, and by the weekend the headlines are about questionable tactics and credibility of the intelligence community, not BushBaby.

Interesting that we also had another shooter steal the headlines for a few days, sorta like when Alberto's testimony was interrupted by the VTech shooter.

The Tin Foil hatters and the cognoscenti get the message.
Clusterfuck indeed.

I take it back. the story on the tapes was on the front page of MSNBC, now it isn't even on the list of top stories.
MSNBC "Sure we covered that story, for and hour."

Looks like they got a call from the whitehouse.

I'm wondering when or if our goverment will be able to be trusted ever again.

Any news stories cannot be trusted cause they may be from government sources.

America is in a sad state of decline.

No doubt the three guards pictured with Padilla have been identified by
al Qaeda and slain along with their families.

moonsha's picture

Because it is clear the CIA did destroy evidence, the prosecution does have the right to assume the worst in court. This opens up the line questioning to all sorts of questions that otherwise would not be allowed for speculation. If the CIA doesn't want the worst to be presumed as evidence, then they need to stop destroying evidence.

Bluestocking's picture

Considering that Jose Padilla was an American citizen, and considering that the Bush administration succeeded in at least temporarily depriving him of his full Constitutional rights as a US citizen? There's no doubt in my mind that those tapes have been destroyed, because they're the ones which have the potential to be the most damning -- if I were a member of the CIA who was desperate to cover my backside for fear of the potential political consequences of my actions, those would have been the very first tapes I would have destroyed.

The Wanderer's picture

They haven't been destroyed yet - Cheney's still using them for wanking material.

what is the purpose of those guys behind padilla wearing those helmets with visors? he's obviously not a threat at that moment...he can't even see or hear them so it's not for him, so it's not part of his torture routine. it apparently some kind of show for the public...what are they trying to convey to us with that? btw, the pic itself displays partially how he was/is being tortured.

According to testimony from people who were released from Guantanamo, the base utilities a group of soldeirs dressed in full riot gear, called rapid response team (or some nomenclature like that). When he is refusing to obey orders, or when he is breaking rules like talking with fellow prisoners, singing, banging on bars, or failing to stay awake when ordered to, the response team comes in (a group of 4 or 6 soldiers) and beat the detainee into compliance. It's a form of negative conditioning.

The shady govt doing shady things again. I bet you a butterfinger there was evidence on those tapes to get The Chimp and the Robot impeached. (I know I know, plus the MOUNTAINS of other evidence against them)

So tell me, how is having sex with an female intern more disastrous than this?!

thank you
being held like this, led around blind, rendered deaf, your whole existance muted. can't talk, don't know what's happening, alone in the world with his own thoughts and memories of abuse at the hands of his own government.
this is a picture of torture.
and the guards. exactly right.
the whole scenario reminds me of the movie brazil.
remove the package, extract necessary info, eliminate or permanantly warehouse the package--er, cargo.

Preacher Boob's picture

What about the Wolfowitz tapes?

Especially the one where he whacked off in the bathtub while the CIA poured ice-cold huckleberry Manichevitz over his dick?

Or the Miers tape?

Where Bush sprayed hot Castrol 10-40 over her pudenda so she could insert her Tampon?

Or the Cheney tape?

Where DickHead alternated between beating The Dummy over the head with a three-foot length of rubber hose, and jamming it up his butt?

Or the Perino tape, where she licked the snot out of Bush's nose while fully inserting her middle finger in his left ear?

I mean, the Keeper of the Tapes has a lot to answer for.

May i suggest using the term custerfuck when talking about this president instead of clusterfuck, which suggests some pleasure for all involved, where we all know what happened to GEORGE Custer with his arrogence at Little big horn.

tjb's picture

Freakoloin that's exactly the point he's buried alive he cannot be seen or heard and when he takes to screaming" he's been driven insane "from the lack of human contact ,for say three years, the guards cannot respond to him.Sounds like the perfect punishment for the worst kind ofv war criminal.

This case more than other needs to be kept in the public discourse!

A US citizen was imprisoned for over 3 years without charges. People serve shorter sentences for stealing cars! This is a clear violation of our constitution. And an activity that our current "leaders" think is OK. We should be up in arms about this. This could hapen to ANY OF US!

For Padilla it is to let him know that "the enforcers" are present so don't get uppity since you know what they can do without punishment.

For the public? They kinda look like storm troopers don't they? Faceless men with full riot gear. Also the message that this can happen to you too if you step too far out of line. (Padilla is a U.S. citizen remember) The constitution doesn't protect you any more.

Edwin's picture

Those "space suits" look like they are designed to freak US out. I mean, he's cuffed and there are three guards (visible in the pic.), how dangerous can he be? They're dressed in full riot gear as if expecting some sort of biological warfare.

I think they are meant to TERRORIZE us!!!!

FreeDUMB's picture

They had to be destroyed in order to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. Ours.

Simon White-Thatch Potentloins's picture

Couldn't Fox run the Padilla tapes on a prime time special? Surely that would give them better ratings than 24.

I say this as a joke but I wouldn't be surprised if this comes to pass.

What is really bothering me about all this is what about the Democrats who knew this stuff was going on? Were people tortured and they were aware of it? What is their responsibility in all of this? Did they approve of the "enhanced interrogation" techniques? I'm getting angrier and angrier with Democrats. Do we have any statesmen anymore holding public office? Anyone who tortured, ordered torture or approved torture should be tried for war crimes. We are not living in Stalin's USSR or Saddaam's Iraq.

dan's picture

of course the padilla tapes are gone. this is the same government that burned the jfk tapes. it's much easier to destroy the evidence than answer to the evidence.
