MSNBC tapes pilot for new show...starring Rachel Maddow!

I can't say I've been happier at programming news since the debut of The Colbert Report. TVNewser posted that a pilot for MSNBC has been taped, with Air America's Rachel Maddow and MSNBC's VP Bill Wolff (who frequently appears on Tucker) as hosts.

Be still my heart...could it be that the Bow Tie Boy is soon to be no more??? Oh happy day!

good for her, good for us, bad for Tucker, and effin frist????

One can only hope Tucker is a gonner.

But if you want TV news without any bias, there is only one.....BBC

YES! I just love her. Now if they could just get somebody decent between Tucker and Keith we'd be set!

Yes a very happy day indeed. It seems the tides are turning both in Washington DC and in the pundit arena.

The drinks are on me. Time to celebrate!
This will be so good.

See ya, tucker, and don't bother to let us know how you're doing, cause we just don't care. Maybe Fox can fix you up.

I'd love to see Al Franken get a show too.

YIPPEEEE!
Rachel is devastatingly(to rwnuts) acuurate and funny and I have never seen her do a bad show.
This is great news...and it's about time!

That's awesome! No more Tucker! (I hope)

I love Rachel Maddow! Here's to her success!

You know the great thing about her and the same for Keith is that they don't just rant and rave, they have facts to back up what they say.

YAY!!!! I've been waiting for this!!

Yeah, you go Rachel! Nobody is more deserving of a News show then Rachel Maddow! She' great on AAR and she'll be even better on her own TV News Show!

I'm looking forward to it...I just hope that doesn't jinx it!

As much as I am not a big Tucker fan, I'd be even happier with a dozen or so less repeats a week of those damn prison shows.

saif -

Al Franken is running in Minnesota to become a US Senator.

Anyone interested in helping him can visit AlFranken.com.

Yay! =)

I can just picture that big honkin' vein on o'lieley's forehead bulging like an over-stuffed sausage casing.

Awesome.....

Speaking of awsome, Weirauch ground game is on big time in Ohio's 5th Special TODAY!

Show some love

Hooray for my girl-crush, Dr. Rachel Maddow!

She must bring Kent Jones with her!

I may just reactive my overpriced cable service.

I agree completely; Tucker is just an obnoxious bore, those prison shows are truly disgraceful, subtly racist exploitation. But to tell the truth, I don't care where they put Rachel (except not at in Olbermann's slot, of course,) as long as they put her on somewhere. She is FAB!

She is so smart but doesn't throw it in your face. She has a great memory and so when she is on air against some Right wing pundint, she can catch the rightwinger telling a lie right to their face.
I'm really happy for her.

As the Beaver?

She is going to take the media by storm! I just love her sensibility and humor!
I was hoping for this!

She is everything the rightwinger loath, smart, sexy, prefer the same sex, and still sharper than a knife. She has been the one person that been able to cut up all the right winger talking point to shred. She does it so with a nice smile on her face.

Woohoo! This is great news!! Rachel will be a great addition to the dialog and spreading the word and facts!

I have noticed her on the air and knew something was up. Yeaaa.
No more Fucker Carlson I hope

Hey folks, the ability to make a shank out of coffee lids and some flaming toilet paper cannot be unlearned. I feel prepared for anything now!
:P

MSNBC will now be "fair and balanced" too?
:) :) :)

Finally, some good news in the world of news! Good for Rachel! Smart, Funny and Personable and she can hang in there with the best (the worst?) of the other side of the aisle.

{Perhaps, C & L was just the tiniest bit influential in this decision? I seem to remember an earlier post about Rosie O'Donnell getting a gig on MSNBC, and most of the comments on that thread wanted Rachel instead of Rosie...}

Why doesn't our society produce any exceptional weirdos?

All we seem to get are religious freaks, mental midgets, psychiatric misfits, and demented boobs. And those are just the politicians!

Then we have the conniving capitalists, the thieving theologists, the avaricious attorneys, the rapacious religious, the perverted pious, the pedophilic priests, the intellectually indolent, the literary licentious, the pornographic producers, the sexually sadistic, the marital mastubators, the journalistic jerk-offs, and the prognosticating putzes.

Where's the wise? Where's the kind? Where's the love?

Where's the competent? Where's the capable? Where's even the adequate?

Everyone in this country is below average, and normal is unacceptable.

Who's Rachel Maddow?

Sweeeeeeeeet! Cheers to Rachel!

Yeah, that thread was very pro-Maddow!

I can see Tucker fretting over a beer, by himself, in a near dark room." damn, I got replaced by a girl, damn!"

It's out there, my friend. And you really don't have to look very far. Check your own backyard, there are people everywhere that are kind and decent and doing wonderful things for lots of people. You usually find what you are looking for. You look for the bad, you'll find it. You look for the good, you'll find that, too. Catch people doing good, you'll get more of that.

YESSSS!!

I just love her. Marry me Rachel!!

I was attempting a light satire on the MSM's view of the US. I guess I failed, Wasn't the first time, won't be the last.

Rachel Maddow is my favorite talk show host. She is smart, she is funny, she is very sharp. She's also a girl after my own heart when it comes to clothes. She's gonna have to get a new wardrobe.

I love it.

It's about time Ms. Maddow got her own TV show. She's head and shoulders above anyone on TV who covers politics. She's actually smart. She's funny. She's good looking. What the hell else would it take to get a show? It's about time.

Turnabout is fair play. Tucker's replacing a girl, a high school sophomore, who was part-timing as the weather chick on a Boise cable station. Tucker snatched the gig for himself.

I love Rachel Maddow - she is smart, insightful and able to distill an issue to its very essence. Importantly, she makes her points with humor and without being mean. Example, when the ONLY study that a proponent of abstinence could point to was a study done by, you guessed it, an abstinence program, Maddow quiped "hey, when I take a look at myself, I think I'm doing pretty well." There is a reason Maddow has been getting lots of face time on Countdown and other shows.

Right on!

The right-wing talk shows are a humanitarian thing. Otherwise, all the demented we threw out of the asylums without their meds a few years ago would be walking the streets, rummaging through dumpsters for dinner. Now, they babble into mics for food.

I was somewhat suspecting this with Rachel coming on Keith's show regularly, and the deal with Rosie falling through. And I have to agree with MC about Cenk getting a show.

Jumping for joy, jumping for joy!!!!! Now, everybody needs to tell their friends who complain about no alternative to MSM, and to write to MSNBC thanking them for being so....hmmm, what do they want to hear?....Cutting edge! Playing to the demographic of choice! You know, breathing, thinking, reading, critically analyzing, and buying, too.

The thing about Rachel is she's not just interesting and well-spoken, she's also funny and entertaining.

Okay, one miss but a lot of home runs in that article. :)

For all the positive comments about Rachel above (sharp, witty etc), I believe Rachel at least deserves and has earned her chance to try and have her own show.

I agree with others, she is head and shoulders above the rest.

I'm sure I don't agree 100% with Rachel on every issue, just as I don't agree with Keith Olbermann or John Amato on everything. I still have great respect for all three.

One of the things I absolutely love here at C&L about John, Nicole, Logan and the others, is that we don't have to be in lock step with our democratic leaders (as republicans are) while battling the big bad neocons. Even though they aren't politicians, it has been refreshing to see the well placed criticisms of our democratic leaders.

As I've posted before, I hope when and if Hillary Clinton (or any other candidate) becomes president and if she continues to abuse the policies that George Bush blazed the groundwork for rather than doing away with them... I hope Crooks & Liars, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are there to scream FOUL and call it as they see it and as the facts present it.

This is great! Anyone have any idea when the pilots will air?

The elephant in the living room that has not been addressed is why has the networks and the cable shows failed to put a genuine liberal on their programs? Even Keith Olbermann, that darling of the left, has taken pains to point out that he does not consider himself to be liberal, as if that is something he should be ashamed of. The last genuine liberal to be on the air was actually on MSNBC and that was Phil Donahue and he was sacked because he dared to promote an anti-war position during the buildup to the Iraq War, even though his ratings at the time had increased to be competitive with the other cable stations.

One now wonders if the network executives do give the green light by granting Rachel Maddow her own show, if they will caution her not to make statements which they might consider to be too critical of the government. Thankfully, one does not have to worry about that happening to Democracy Now!, since Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez are not beholden to, as Dickens would say, the vested interests.

right on rachel!

Awesome, she's always spot on, strong progressive angle.
And plenty funny

If Rachel replaces Tucker, maybe they can replay her show late each night, instead of all the prisons, predators and murderers they're trying to scare us with. Rachel Rocks!

I wish David Schuster got the nod over Maddow. He does such a great job filling in for Tucker, it's a shame he didn't get a shot at the job.

Oh well, better than O Donnell.

YES,YES and YES!!

GO RACHEL!!! I always look forward to her commentary on Olbermann.

I don't even have teevee and I'm psyched! Please make the content available on a C&L link!

This is real good news. I just hope that she will be free to be herself.

I don't think Rachel could do the show anyway other than with total integrity.

This may call for a midweek bourbon!

good on rachel!!!!!

Rachel is a genius, LITERALLY. For once MSNBC is actually considering a show of high quality journalism. I suspect she may even overshado Olberman.

'Put the bowtie down, and step away from the chair Tucker.'
Do it Mr.Wolff!....watch your ratings JUMP.

Rachel Maddow is smart and funny. They should pair Tucker Boy with her. It would be fun to watch her destroy him on a nightly basis, for at least a few weeks until he just starts babbling incoherently. Well, more than usual. She could finish off the career that Jon Stewart started down the path to ruin.

Maddow is, and will be, brilliant.
She absolutely can carry her own show.
One of the best unspinners in the business.
Her informed straight-talk logic will know em dead.

er, whoops, knock em dead

Say wha? I didn't see this coming! Oh man, this is gonna drive the wingshitters crazy. I may start watching MSNBC besides the K-to-the-muthafuckin-O. Yeah, and while your at it, get rid of Tucker and his gay lover Willie "That's my president!" Geist.

Wouldn't it be great if her former co-host on AAR Liz Winstead was putting the necessary pieces together to help her get the show started? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Liz was the original Producer of The Daily Show.

Great news !!! Only thing that could be even better and that would be Chris Matthews leaving . Just saw his show (5pm)and was probaly the worst show he has ever done. Gets the honor of having Frank Rich on , and he does all the talking and all garbage , of course. Rachel Maddow is the absolute best and very respected by Keith O. and thats good enough for me. MSNBC might have a chance of making it now. Good day for us all !!!

Rachael is great!

Yay! Rachel rocks!

Davis Shuster could take over Scarborough. Keep Willie Geist, whom I can't stand together with Tucker, but away from him he does pretty well, especially subbing fot Scarborough

Oh well, better than O Donnell.

I want em both! I'm thinking David will get his turn - he is too sharp to risk losing.

Count me among those who wanted someone other than O'Donnell.

Can someone tell me a bit about her co-host?

About a couple of months ago I sent three emails to MSNBC suggesting that with the upcoming Democratic control of Congress and the WH, MSNBC should position themselves to be the Fox of the new USA. Then and ONLY THEN will Bolly-o be right that MSNBC is left-leaning

Does this mean that MSNBC will be moving to pay-per-view?

For me this would be good news/bad news.

Rachel is my two-hour evening fix on radio. While I'm thrilled that people in TV-Land may finally get a regular dose of Rachel, I'll really miss her on the Radio-Machine.

TRMS can be *so* much fun and who else on radio *or* television devotes the top of each hour to news about Iraq and Afghanistan during wartime. Somehow I doubt MSNBC would let her continue that tradition.

But for Rachel, this would be an incredible opportunity.

Go Rachel!

Hey - would that make her the only openly gay person with a TV news program?

I got something different:
"Rachel Maddow on MSNBC
Rachel Maddow, host of The Rachel Maddow Show, AAR's early morning news hour, will be become MSNBC's first and only progressive spokesperson when she takes her place as a regular panelist on the 'The Situation', hosted by conservative bowtie model Tucker Carlson."

http://www.airamerica.com/node/141

i saw bill wolff mentioned in the article. whatever happened to his partner in crime max kellerman (for those who care, when max was on espn as the first host of around the horn, wolff was the unknown disembodied voice. when max left for fox sports net, bill went with him on max's new show i, max until it got cancelled)? he was on msnbc for a while when "tucker" was still known as "the situation". those segments he did with tucker were pretty good; a lot of the topics they talked about were outside the world of sports so max could do some commentary on the news of the day.

Please let this be true!!

Doctorate in Dodge Ball, Laura Schlessinger, adds the "Dr." to her name every time she has a microphone in front of her face. When the real political analysis and Doctorate in Political Science is too humble to ever use it.

Go Dr. Maddow! Its about time!

Dhalgren @ 2:

One can only hope Tucker is a gonner.

But if you want TV news without any bias, there is only one.....BBC

The Beeb is great, but they have John Bolton on to lie about Iraq almost every week. It's driving me insane!

YAY!!!

Wouldn't the best thing in the world be an evening lineup of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and David Schuster? As much as I love my awful guity pleasure of "To Catch a Predator" I'd be willing to give it up for this dream lineup and stay in every night to watch it.

The tides are turning and I think now folks have had their fill of screeching sanctimony from Faux, now they might be more open to a calmer, gentler, CORRECT news network. Here's hoping...

Rachel Maddow has a mind like a steel trap. Tough darts to any right wingnut that is stupid enough to sit there and offer nothing but talking points in a debate with Dr. Maddow. She decimates them with the facts.

But she isn't just smart; she is consistently civil with all participants in any discussion whenever she is on the air.

This is hopeful news, indeed.

Peekaboo @ 39:

She's smart and witty but doesn't have the gravitas to hold a show.

Plus she likes to bash Democrats who don't follow her hard liberal line.

I vote yes as a commentator, but NO for a show.

So she doesnt deserve a chance to fall flat on her face then?

Assuming, of course, such a thing were to happen?

And why would Rachel Maddow fare more poorly than the guy with the bowtie?

I've thought on several occasions that Rachel Maddow would make a great host on MSNBC, so I'm happy to hear this news! What's up with VP's and GM's hosting shows, though? I would give Dan Abram's timeslot to Rachel Maddow (without the proposed co-host) and replace Tucker with David Shuster.

If this is the case, it simply proves that MSNBC, like the other corporate outlets, is still not comfortable having a liberal host her or his own show. Perhaps MSNBC believes that the last thing it wishes to have happen is for another liberal like Phil Donahue to host one of their shows for a full hour spouting [gasp!] an anti-war point of view. Perhaps the thinking here is that if Ms. Maddow appears with Carlson, then Carlson can balance it with a conservative viewpoint during that one hour time period, because apparently the last thing that should happen on the corporate airwaves is for a progressive to actually present a full hour's worth of progressive thinking. One can be certain that the network executives have seen Democracy Now! and the last thing that they would wish would be for anyone to be too critical of the government and to speak out in favor of the working class. For anyone wishing to see those views aired, it is strongly recommended that one tune in to Democracy Now! along with the other progressive programs that are seen on Free Speech TV and Link TV, stories that one will absolutely never see [with the exception of Bill Moyers and Now] on the corporate airwaves today in this country.

Love her!!!! Listen everyday for 2 and a half years now. She's a goddess, and sooooo tv-ready.

Yay Rachel!!!

Great news - I am utterly delighted and will round up most of my neighbors to enjoy together her wit and sharp insights. She is so damn refreshing and quick. After months of subscribing to her 'campaign asylum' video shorts - so hilarious and pointed - we can now watch her on the tv??? fabulous news about this brilliant woman!!

Great news, a woman who can argue the best of em under a table, yet is cute and funny. I might get my tv back

Rachel has been great on Countdown, and I'd love to see her replace numb nuts Tucker.

Excellent!

YEEEEEEEE HAAWWWWWWWWW!!! Um sorry. I’m from our west so please understand. I am so thrilled at this news. Rachael is one of the most intelligent, articulate and wonderful people in our time. She brings with her strong personal constitution and convictions. I always wondered why no one has scooped up this brilliant person for the entire world to see and hear. This is the best news I have had in months. May the world rejoice at this news.

My reaction to this: Gad! MSNBC must be incredibly desperate to finally get some viewers for Tucker! If it is true - and RM doesn't sinblehandedly lift the ratings from the basement, will she take the fall with Bowtieboy?

Or is this a way of seasoning her with an eye to easing Tucker out at contract time?

Frankly, I ain't willin to endure 30 to 35 min of Tucker (plus commercials) and his ilk for 5 to 10 minutes of Rachael.

All speculation, I know - but if MSNBC wants my eyes for that hour, Rachael better be front and center.

if she can say what she wants, I'm all for it. I will run out and buy any product I see advertised.
I hope she takes. as much as I enjoy K.O. - he still features a lot of beltway doo-doo that I could really live without.
I think Rachel Maddow could really be an innovation.

as for Tucker, he will ALWAYS have a show. somewhere in t.v. land a Liberal will be kicking Tucker in the chops and Tucker will be too smug and full of himself to notice.

should give a show to ED Shultz.

Monie @ 18:

Hooray for my girl-crush, Dr. Rachel Maddow!

She must bring Kent Jones with her!

Kent just got the AAR axe.

Kent Jones has just been fired from Air America...

She will be a real asset.Maybe she can have ann the man on her show.tucker fuck off. Do you still think about the time Jon Stewart handed you your ass on crossfire, that was a bad day wasn't it dickhead.

Great! I was just telling my daughter the other day that Rachel Maddow is an up&commer that I'd like to see get more air-time. And now This! Yeah!

Rachel Maddow is, as we all know here, easy to love, respect and be in awe of, but just as importantly, how much work would it take or mental gymnastics would it take to actually not like her even if you're of the winguttia persuasion? She's just that damned good at what she does, and that damned engaging while she does it.

I'll never understand why complete and utter douche bags like Bill Wolff & Willy Geist get ANY airtime at all, especially on MSNBC. They're worse that some of the bootlickers on Fake Noise.

YEAH!!!!!!!!!
Bout damn time. I hope Air "We hate talent and humor" America doesn't tank should she leave.

She's wonderful.

oh man this is gonna be sweet. she is so fun to watch on tv. unfazed.

and by "tv" i mean, of course, C&L clips.

Man, I'm sorry to hear Kent is leaving the show. He's a good guy and he's funny. I wish him the best of luck.

This just reminds me of the time Limbaugh brought up Rachel on his radio show, and mispronounced her name in this tone to make it sound like she was some weirdo he'd never heard of. If she becomes big on TV, it'll be hilarious to see what that ass thinks of her now.

Great. I STILL refuse to pay for digital cable.

Bring MSNBC back to basic analog cable!

Tucker [Jazz hands!] Carlson loses his show and Rachael [OMG, she's totally HOT.] Maddow gets her own show?

There really IS a God!!!

How about Maddow-Schuster. Make it a two hour show, dump the bow tie and the prison-desperate predator crap !

Dear MSNBC

stop airing the same 3 prison documentaries and to catch a predator reruns in the 10pm slot. Rachel is the answer for your programming questions

I love Rachel Maddow. She is sharp as a tack and quick with her wits. I love watching her debate Pat Buchannan as well as other conservatives. Anyone who wants to learn a few things about debate needs to watch her. She will make a tremendous contribution to intelligent discourse on television.

pissed off patricia @ 10:

You know the great thing about her and the same for Keith is that they don't just rant and rave, they have facts to back up what they say.

Yes unlike say Fixed News..

YES!
Finally, I Loooove Rachel Maddow and think she should have had her own show years ago.
Same for Stephanie Miller and Randi Rhodes.
Id love to see the 3 of them together, that would be magic.

He's got only 3 more shows. That was the even worse news I hate to bring. Here's the bad news. Rachael says she isn't getting a tv show, the rumours are false.

All the worse, so what are we going to do to help save kent's job. he really is the one of the greatest parts of my afternoon. I love rachel's show, but my afternoon is saved by the punctuation of kent jones!

This is super exciting news!! I love Rachel to bits and have a gigantic girl crush her. She's so smart, informed and witty, and it's about time she gets the attention she deserves. I've an Air America Premium subscription for nearly two years now mainly so I can download her podcasts which I listen to everyday. She has a really great show and I hope that if she takes the TV gig she'll keep her radio shows. Other talk show hosts do it (Alan Colmes, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, etc.), so I don't think it'd be out of the question.

I'm heartbroken about Kent Jones leaving though! I'm not entirely surprised since I think he's like the very last of the comedy staff that was hired back at the beginning to still have a job, and I'd always wondered how he'd escaped the axe before. Likely because Rachel fought to keep him, but after the network had decided to get rid of all of their writers to save $$ a year or two ago (I assumed that's why they did it anyway...) I was surprised she had the clout to save his job as while she's certainly become a star over the past year, she wasn't one of their headliners in the earlier days.

Poor Kent though. He sounded choked up when he made the announcement. Kent, you'll be missed! Vigilance!

ronhohn @ 94:

I got something different:
"Rachel Maddow on MSNBC
Rachel Maddow, host of The Rachel Maddow Show, AAR's early morning news hour, will be become MSNBC's first and only progressive spokesperson when she takes her place as a regular panelist on the 'The Situation', hosted by conservative bowtie model Tucker Carlson."

http://www.airamerica.com/node/141

I think that might be outdated news. I've noticed in the past that Air America isn't really wonderful about taking old, outdated info about their network off their website. Rachel used to have a regular spot on the Tucker Carlson show back when it first started (notice in this post they call Tucker's show "The Situation With Tucker Carlson" when his show hasn't been called that in well over a year) and used to have a really early morning show. This was during the same period too, IIRC, back in 2005 maybe? I forget when it was she moved from her morning spot into her night spot.

> All the worse, so what are we going to do to help save kent’s job. ...

Inform AAR that Rachael's ratings are going to go down? (as if they didn't already know that)

I like Rachel a lot. She'll be great. Tucker can do sideline reporting for Liberty University football.

I bet she looks great in a pantsuit, can't wait to see all the different hues she brings to the debate, she's a walking talking colorwheel of freespeech ;)

F'g A that's extrememly promising news! God Bless GE, I'm buying stock!

If only I could spell "extremely" I might be able to afford a chunk of GE stock.

Rachel Maddow is great so is Thom Hartman, I would like any one of thes on NSMBC, maby Thom could replace (Joie)

The network is simply hedging their bets. They suspect the Rethugs will be sent home (unless of course the Dems nominate Obama and then we'll have that ass Mitt or the shockingly stupid Hick-aby) and want to be on the winning curve. Poor Tucker will be forced onto Fox News and to tapping it out in public restrooms.

The world is indeed coming to an end...

Giving a show to someone so smart, correct, and funny? How did this slip past through the CorporateFilter 3000?

Maybe Colbert was her agent?...

MSNBC has to get rid of more than Tucker! Notice the change in Tweety Matthews as he sees the writing on the wall about republicans? Then there's the constant Andrea Mitchell, Tim Russert interference. And oh yes, that cumbersome slit-eyed Scarborough. I'm glad for Maddow. But maybe MSNBC ought to reconsider Stephanie Miller. Final thought: MSNBC couldn't appear more opportunistic if it tried. This is not news, it's business as usual.

#133

Rachel made one 'Situation' appearance on 6/6/06, the starting subject was Ann Coulter

#142

Scarborough definitely should go. The reason became more obvious by his performance this morning at about 1:00 AM (ET) arguing in favor of torture with Mika Brzezinski and David Shuster. A very condescending attitude towards both of them to the point of advocating torture in the future.
Incredible why someone would pay him for the garbage he disseminates. He even laid out the step by step scenario how torture of Abu Zubaydah was authorized from the WH to the torturers.

MSNBC should replace this sob with David Shuster, keep Mika.

Willie Geist did not get into this discussion, to his credit.

As a women growing up in here in the East Bay, Ms Maddow had what I remember to be a good family who was always in one thing or another in local politics.

Then in time she got a Rhodes Schlorship and did her own thing.

I'm impressed!

This is a no brainer. Rachel is sharp as they come. I have four daughters. If any of them come out anything like Rachel would be icing on the cake.

Dont worry about looseing them there all go to fox and carry on as usual. Jerks, assholes, liars

This is great news! Maddow is excellent!

BAC

With how many people on Crooks and Liars suggested this when the rumour about bow tie boy were floating around, Looks like MSNBC frequents C&L, good for them.

In the words of Lawence Welk, "Onederful, a onederful".

Rachel Maddow is whip smart and funny as hell!

You go, girl!
