Hardball: Rachel Maddow declares Alan Keyes "winner" of GOP Debate

When asked her opinion of the winners and losers of the final GOP debate in Iowa before the Iowa caucus, Rachel picked surprise upset Alan Keyes for at least having the intellectual honesty of displaying just how crazy the Republican platform is without all the euphemisms to make it palatable.
I don't think host Chris Matthews appreciated Rachel's sense of humor all that much:
You are causing trouble here. Because you are… I would like to put you on…I would like to waterboard you right now, because there’s no way on God’s earth you believe that.
Oh, Tweety, has it really come to this?? Now waterboarding is a joke to threaten guests with whom you disagree?

FristerBoarded
Get on the board tweety, time to find out what you know...
If Mat Continenti isn't gay, I'm a three dollar bill.
I saw it more as a lame joke than a 'threat.' Tweety is one of the few media whores I've actually gotten to like over the years.
And he jumped in Michael Moore's Moshpit---Frist I think too.
V V
For closet cases like Tweety, "waterboarding" has dual meanings.
Seriously, someone should start a waterboarding group to go around and offer to waterboard some of these public people that so flippantly aggrandize and support waterboarding. If they don't think it is torture... than why don't they do it themselves? Oh, by the way, we have a board and some water over here. Lets waterboard you and you tell me if you think its torture or not after its been done to you.
Get it on camera. Imagine getting someone like Romney or even Tweety to say no I won't be waterboarded on camera. What are they afraid of?
I think Tweety was flirting with cutie Rachel.
He's so smooth.
Tweety's one of those typical American Males who's entire reality and existence is threatened by feminism.
Sure he meant it when he said he'd like to waterboard her.
*Declares* the lefty on stage. But lets go that the other commentator works for the Weekly Standard. Yeah the neocon obviously has a legit opinion, opposed to that whacked out leftist.
Matthews is a dick. In person too. I've met him.
Seems to me that Tweety and Chimpy are drinking or toking behind the woodshed. How else can you 'splain what comes out of their mouths?
What would posess anyone to watch television?
haha, well everyone knows that was a joke, and rachel's answer WAS pretty ridiculous, so I guess it sort of fit the current stupid debate about whether waterboarding is 'torture' (can you believe that people are arguing that it isn't?).
What I want to see are all of the news people that support torture like Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and Glenn Beck, or if he applies, Tweety, and put that on paperview to see if they can get some money for the stations.
Tweety has no sense of humor, unless you include his incessant nervous guffawing over Hillary. He's got a severe case of misogyny. How this individual has a regular stint on any "news" program is beyond me. Or did I already answer my own question?

Symes @ 2:
Talk about an act of futility...
I remember when I saw Alan Keyes (never have heard of him before) and he interupted the moderator I thought he was going to bring some santity to the debate. He managed in 30 seconds to appear crazier than any Republican candidate.
Only a conservative freak would find "waterboarding" humorous. No wonder the world is going straight to Hell under them.
What a disturbing man Matthews is. He invites Maddow, an intelligent and articulate outsider, on his show, then gets obviously pissed when she gives an intelligent and articulate outsider response to his banal question.
His "joke" about water-boarding was grotesque, and not a little chilling. If our country every degenerates to a fascist state, you know whose side Tweety will be on.
not sure i'll be back to c&l's before the late night music thread gets going, so please let me say here r.i.p. to one of the originators of rock, and homie, ike turner.
Tweety has a man-crush on just about every male Repug out there. "Flight Suit" Bush, "Aqua Velva" Thompson, et al. And, yes, he's threatened by pretty, successful females. He's a misogynist, indeed. Can't stand him. Oh, and he eats with his mouth open, sprays spittle when he laughs and has a braying donkey guffaw.
Uh, I meant to say that Tweety probably talks while he's chewing. Clueless and classless.
and on the crybaby fringe crazy ticket, I would like to nominate Keyes/Kucinich.
C'mon, people, Tweety was clearly trying to make a joke. He didn't succeed, but he wasn't threatening Maddow. He was questioning whether she really believed what she had just said or simply trying to stir things up.
I'm surprised Tweet hasn't said . . . "Rachel, when are you going to stop being a man hater, start being the woman you are, as God obviously intended, your lower and upper assets are all the proof you need, have you looked in the mirror lately " . . . or something of that nature.
Maddow is getting bigger in Tweety's zone and the more liberal and progressive it gets it will scare the chickenhawks and their minions away and put Tweety out to pasture.
Chris Mathewsshould apologize for making such a heinous statement.
What a small, scared, little man. I'd almost feel sorry for him. Almost...

It's not a joke, it's desensitization. :)
Where's Sylvester when you need him?
Truth & Beauty
Matthews has no soul or principles, he's a corporate hack brown nosing his bosses by smearing any Democrat or Progressive he can and pimping for Republicans. It's clear, the guy doesn't believe a single thing he says, it's all posturing so he can keep his job. He's good at what he does, unfortunately, his job isn't journalism, it's paving the way for Republican corporatists to deregulate media ownership restrictions at the FCC. It's all about the bottom line.
rachel's getting own show. tweety's nervous.
John Barringer @ 29:
Liberal disclaimer required:
Not that there's anything wrong with that. The problem lies with the closet case supporting a party that rabidly exploits prejudice against gays to get morons to vote against their own financial interests. I have a problem with that, don't you?
After watching Matthews for years, I finally gave up and I haven't seen his show in a month. I have never felt better.
Two gays facing off with Tweety. I didn't even know Keys was running.
Last I heard he was "defeated" by Obama. Thanx Allen.
Snowball @ 3:
Well I don't like to judge on an individual basis, but I do think that Republcans recruit members out of the gay children arena. Take Jeff Gannon for example. And of course the well known Franklin Cover-Up documents the children associations where these monsters prey on young boys. Sick. Sick. sick!!!
The sooner we start dealing with the reality and the sickness of these individuals the sooner we will get our government and country back from these people. They can deal with their problems in the private sector and we can start correcting their mistakes in the public sector. :)
Snowball @ 3:
Nah just a dork, perhaps that shatters your delusion that all gay men are dorks, but fuck you. Rachel's the gay one. And when Matt mentioned "looked presidential" Rachel should have bitch slapped him for it, surprised she didn't.
PassedPawn @ 18:
Rachel seemed to find the humor in it... is she a conservative freak too?
So now that the CIA ratfucker from yesterday told everyone how waterboarding led to a torture "success story" that he just had to share with the American people, suddenly today jokes about torture are perfectly acceptable for what passes as news and commentary in this formerly acceptable nation.
ray @ 36:
I am not a fan of these "Washington insider" shows, when you have opposing opinions on the same show it is no different than a rowdy classroom and nothing is really being heard through the crosstalk. It is noise, like any fox noise programming.
Jesus Christ on a crutch, people. Bill Maher has been making waterboarding jokes for months. Aren't there plenty of other idiotic things Tweety said that we can pick on?
Sorry, I don't think that gays are dorks, most that I know aren't. I have however, known some that are ruthless greedheads. There's nothing that says a gay person can't be as selfish and sociopathic as any hetero. It's just that if I see a gay, a woman, blue collar worker, middle class or poor person supporting the Republican Party, I'll highlight the fact that they're working against their own interest and are possibly a hypocrite.
look at his face. chrissie ain't joking. he is a piece of shit. he obviously wants people to believe that that bunch of hacks called repug pres. candidates should be taken seriously when they are trying to brag the loudest about how earth is flat.
and fuck him for threatening to waterboard anyone!
chrissie, the scumbag. (no offense intended for male testicular packaging.)
Chrissy is a tool. He lost me with his lovefest interview of Ann Coulter during the summer.
maybe chrissie should be teabagged by larry craig.

Remember that same lovefest between the two while pimping "mission accomplished" in 2003? I was sick of tweety pandering back then, MMFA made him misinformer of the year in 2005 was a notch of his career in water carrying
NovaNardis @ 10:
I recently got Verizon FIOS and while vastly superior to cable, I don't get MSNBC. When you don't see him on a regular basis, you forget what a insecure, right-wing, misogynistic dickhead Matthews is. Just look at the still picture of his contorted face in comparison to Rachel's smiling face.
Roger Bixley @ 40:
rachel did not find it funny at all. I listened to her show tonight. she only pretended humor rather than spoil the show.
the japanese were put on trial for waterboarding. where is the humor, really?
Roger Bixley @ 48:

joe cantwell @ 34:
Right
Chris Matthews has been hammering the "cakewalk In Iraq" zealots for four years now. He knows he was duped before the invasion and he is pissed. He was one of the first main steamers to do shows focused on returning and injured soldiers from Iraq. He has had Amy Goodman on numerous times. Great to see Rachel Maddow on his show.
But Matthews this was over the top, and I wish Rachel could have slammed him with her quick and brilliant wit. I am sure she hesitated because she knows Matthews might not
have her back. Rachel could have leveled Matthews if she had not been considering the results of leveling Matthews. I think Rachel is faster than Matthews. Would love to watch both of their minds, wits, insights, unleashed on another program where one person does not have to worry about their response.
Hey Matthews when are you going to report on the injured soldiers or what is taking place in Iraq...AGAIN?. All it has been for months is campaign campaign CAMPAIGN. The Bush administration just loves when the MSM stays focused on the campaign instead of Iraq. Bush likes you right now Chris...
Matthews likes flirty gigglists who pretend his shitty book is the greatest thing since sliced bread
CoIntelPro @ 51:
So.... you're not allowed to make fun of something if someone went on trial for it? Huh? What the hell kind of logic is that?
CoIntelPro @ 52:
Haahahah... normally I dream of Rachel Maddow in that outfit that Princess Leia wore in Return of the Jedi.
This was an interesting segment, but I have to say Matthews is definitely on the shortlist, at least in my eyes, of commentators who more often then not does a great job covering the political spectrum. I don't know though, that's just my two cents. I'll go back to lurk mode now.
http://www.hyerstandard.com
mathews better have help with the waterboarding because maddow would kick his candy ass. spitting and slobbering doesn't make good tv so mathews should consider a radio gig like limbaugh and other crude, poorly polished pundits.
60sRelic @ 14:
Tweety's got the worst case of misogyny this side of Glenn Beck & Rudy 9/11 but he's psycho-obsessed with Hillary. Has he asked yet why Barack & Michelle or John & Elizabeth have been clapping so much at rallies? He went ballistic over Hillary's hand-clapping last month. He edited a whole stream of her clapping at rallies & drooled to his phony "roundtable" guests: "Why does she do that clapping thing? Is it some sort of Chinese thing or what? Why do you think she does that? What's up with Hillary clapping? It's like her cackle....." You just never know how he's going to proudly display his Hillary obsession but you know he will.
The best part of Tweety's "show" on Wednesday was hearing him say (after a whole "comedy" segment mainly to trash Hillary via old footage of late-nite jokes at her expense) he was still pissed off at Jon Stewart. Please rerun that footage, Tweety. That was primo comedy at your expense. hee
Why was Alan Keys there to begin with? Good question. What is any person of color doing in a Republican debate or having anything to do with the party of bigotry and hatred of minorities? And, oh yeah, lets do a waterboarding trifecta...Tweety, Scarborough, and O'Leilly.
Maddow is perfectly correct. The deliciously insane Alan Keyes was magnificent by any standards in summing up the entire armed madhouse perspective. Tweety is and always has been a complete imbecile who will probably have to buy a sense of humor from a mail order house if things get any worse for the fascists.
rasta @ 31:
Right On!!! Thanks for putting a great mail list together for everyone. It means almost no work to make an impact. Thanks!!!
Kathleen @ 54:
I just think he can't defend the IraqNam disaster any longer and maintain his negligible credibility. Only a short time ago, he was still talking about Bush's "sunny nobility". He has way more right-wingers on than liberals, and treats them much more respectfully. He had his head so far up DeLay's ass, he could see polyps.
CoIntelPro @ 51:
CoIntelPro @ 51:
Rachel: Class act. Tweety: Ass act.
Not to make excuses for tweety, but once in awhile I try hard to be clever or funny and say something that is totally without taste, and I have to "eat it". I apologize and move on. Sorry, that's just me.
As for tweety, he sits in front of thousands of viewers every night, and for him to make the same sort of "tasteless 'jokes'" is probably less excusable....but it does happen. He did, however, forget to toss out the sincere apology. He is a tasteless shill. HE thinks he's cute.

Obama and Oprah almost make spinning the truth sound and look good
During the Oprah and Obama show I found both of their efforts to convince the American public that Senator Obama will be “bold” and will not conduct “business as usual” if he becomes the Democratic candidate for President hollow, insincere and hypocritical.
We know that Senator Obama recently had an opportunity to take a solid stand against any efforts by the Bush administration to escalate a confrontation with Iran when the Kyl Lieberman amendment came up for a vote. He did not. Senator Obama was so “bold” he happened to be out of town the day of this critical vote. We also know that Senator Hillary Clinton voted for that amendment.
Several years ago Senator Obama had an opportunity to demonstrate his allegedly “bold” stances on other issues. During the nomination hearings of both John Bolton and Condi “mushroom cloud” Rice (I watched them) Senator’s Kerry, Kennedy, Biden, Dodd and Lincoln Chaffee asked hard driving “bold” questions of both Bolton and Rice. During that same hearing Senator Obama played it safe and asked softball questions. “Bold” is certainly not the way I would describe Obama’s actions. More like riding the fence and then spinning the truth.
Obama and Oprah can spin all they want, but facts do matter to some voters.
We know Hillary voted for the 2002 war resolution. We know that she voted for the Kyl Lieberman amendment allowing the Bush administration to move closer to a confrontation with Iran. We know that Hillary sarcastically laughed when she was challenged about this vote by Mike Gravel soon after the vote.
We know Hillary is a war hawk and the I-lobby owns a big piece of Hillary.
John Edwards is the only candidate not taking Pac money.

Alan Keyes? Yeah I rode an elevator with him the day Barack kicked his frickin' butt. He was being interviewed by Mancow in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The dude is a psycho. I told him "Barack is going to kick your ass." He said "As long as I have my lord (lower case for you alan) I am happy". His wifey asked me why I had to hassle him! Duh! Cause he's running for office!
Alan is a typical republitard, and will drag the republitards even lower than they are. It's all about the party line.

Just what sort of prohibited chemical substances are you on right now?
yikes, that was scary. maddow was spot on, and tweety and frat fuck were pathetic.....pompous, arrogant.....yuck me want to throw up.
He's too fucking stupid to even GET her humor.
And what kind of rude comment is that for a host to say? I guess he wants to be more like Bill O'Reilly.
worthless
I still can't tell if Maddow has boobs.
Erik @ 32:
I don't understand why the smiley face, but you're right. It's desensitization. What was horrid to contemplate is now something to joke about, to tease somebody. I don't care if Maher does it, too, it's offensive. No wonder so many people are beginning to shrug off the idea of waterboarding as torture.
I predict that in another 5 years or so, pundits like Matthews will be making jokes about September 11, 2001. If anyone acts outraged, they'll tell them to "lighten up." Oh. Wait. Coulter is already doing that, by slamming the widows who want a deeper investigation into the events of September 11, saying that they're enjoying their husbands' deaths a little too much.
Preacher Boob @ 74:
I'm pretty sure Chris Matthews does. And they're probably bigger than Rachel's.
Straight Shooter @ 75:
Humor has always been a way for humans to deal with difficult times and situations.
You can choose to be offended if you wish. I choose to be offended by the actions of this administration, not some yammering idiot on basic cable who tried to make a funny.
And if Rachel Maddow was really offended by the comment, she wouldn't have laughed. Will you condemn her? Wouldn't she be partially to blame for enabling this so-called "offensive" behavior? For her to complain about it after the fact makes her seem like she's covering her ass for finding a waterboarding joke funny.
WAIT
He. Actually. Said. This.
"I would like to waterboard you!"
Is it baseball bat to the head time yet?

well to be entirely aboveboard, rachel wasn't being honest when she picked keyes as the winner of the debate. look, the debate ostensibly is to weed out and highlight the "best" republican. you guys know how to choose the bestest h-bomb right? it's a matter of criteria, for a bomb it's: boom. ok then, let's choose us the best republican. so, in this case you're looking for the most bloodthirsty, lying, evil, power hungry, messianic, bigoted, retarded, dry drunk of a closeted pervert scumbag on the stage.
i'm sorry, rachel, but keyes just ain't that kinda guy.
tweety was correct to call her on it. ;>

As a gay man, I can say that the saddest thing is that there are so many self-loathing queers out there that are willing to sell all of us down the river to protect their professional or finanical interests. While they smoke pole behind closed doors and in bathroom stalls at airports, their support of people like George Bush and Mitt Romney assure that the rest of us are discriminated in employment, housing and military service! So yes, I for one have a problem with these assholes!
Sorry.. But I told my family this. If a Repub gets elected in 08 im out of this country once i get my masters in Mircobio. there is no future for science or nethin that looks to the future in this country. The US is gone.
NovaNardis @ 10:
His 'dickiness' is nearly his ENTIRE appeal, but the closet cases do like to pretend they are being rational by indulging in viewing these shows. So his thin veneer of rationality does the trick, but it's his dickiness that they keep coming back for. "Gotten to like" means you've fallen into his dickiness spell.
Because HE IS FULL OF SHIT.
He's a smiling Portapotty of human cowardice.
He would laugh at Martin Luther King Jr., call him a few mild racist names, jeer chidingly at his belief in a better world, and thumb his nose at all who do.
And still the dickiness will keep people watching, because of the weird, floating, immorality of corporate media. Dickiness has replaced Murrowness or Chronkiteness or Ratherness or even Brokawness.
Of course, there are a few stodgy Brokaws left, and Charlie Rose is happy to fellate them when his supply of corporate whores runs low. Leno will put them on so they BOTH can laugh at the misery. And then you look at the Brokaws, and the only thing they lack for their medium is the authorization to behave like dicks. As soon as they do -- the illusion is shattered.
And the dickiness remains -- for those who 'like' it.
Clearly, Keyes was the winner. Maddow is correct. Most people didn't even know he was running until this debate (see previous comments to this effect). Otherwise, most people will forget this debate pretty quickly.
jervisPervis @ 81:
Just because Rachel laughed, doesn't make it funny. Laughing at cruel bullshit gradually inures us to its pain causing properties, as evidenced by-Rachel laughing at it.
And look at all the fucking rat fucks that are broadcasting to the heavens that waterboarding is not torture.
Would it have been a toss away joke if he'd used the word 'rape' instead? NO. Both are acts of violence perpetrated out of a need for power on the part of the victimizer.
I think Nicole is only being consistent. Torture, like rape, is nothing to joke about.
Nate F. @ 83:
Flee like a coward, if that's what you are.
It's amazing, how low a standard of citizenship some people experience.
My father's entire band of brothers went to Europe and the Pacific to fight fascism. Five of those never left France again. But the modern passive citizen doesn't think they have a DUTY to their country NOT to hand it over to fascists without a (nonviolent) fight.
If your citizenship is empty, give it up. If you feel no duty, that explains your lack of political action -- and your planning for your own betrayal of the Constitution. That Constitution needs defenders now just as much as it did when we fought a Civil War against heinous racists for human rights. And I clash with a lot of leftists who defend that Constitution intensely, no matter how wrong I consider their attacks on the Speaker, etc.
They are MILES ahead of a person who runs from its defense, in terms of their morality. The only real test is if they get so rhetorically crossed up that they themselves lose their affiliation, their hope, their commitment.
Some people change out their heart like they do oil filters. Everything is replaceable. They will never face such dangers, or know when they have failed the test.
Too many good people stayed behind in Germany once and thought they could take their country back from drooling fascists and bigots like Hitler...most of them paid with their lives or the lives of their loved ones. There often comes a time the history of every nation when its basest instincts and pettiest prejudices and fears consume it and the greater population begin to believe that its foulest minority--in this case the religious right--might actually be right and march dutifully, if not loyally, to its twisted drumbeat. I'm afraid if America does elect any one of these Republican candidates--especially Romney or Huckabee, then we are indeed doomed as a nation!
miss_kitty @ 86:
Just because Rachel laughed, doesn't mean SHE found it funny.
People commonly laugh when offended to their face.
Tweety is a specialist in such rude humor. He was angered by what she said. His response is a masterpiece of passive agression. And, yeah, he is offended that she is a lesbian, so his hostility at her is on several counts. Mainly he hoped she would profer as less pointed analysis. And she knew that -- and kicked his ass across the barnyard.
So his response is quite angered, and vicious, and so unknown to him that if they put him in a black mask, he would swing the whip for his bosses, and pour the water. Why not? They pay him good.
Darth_Romney @ 88:
No, that's not historical. Most of the resistance in Hitler's Germany was gone within four years. He viciously killed it in the streets, and drove out all opposition.
NO SUCH COMPARISON HERE. Bushco is opposed by 70% of the country, which includes a LOT of powerful people and competing interests, as well as an enormous number of educated citizens (unlike your average German of the time). We have the most advanced communications and information technology of the Ages, we are many of us armed, and a great number of us will not bow to tyranny, even at the cost of our lives.
Unlike Germans, we are mercenaries and the descendents of mercenaries, most of us. We are intact, we have not been shattered by a WWI experience. Most of the population is so far unintimidated. And the attempt to collapse the voting system is in deep shit. And our courts are still open. Your "Hitler Excuse" is not a passport to anything but cowardice and shame, if you are capable of feeling such.
Classic. "Unlike Germans, we are NOT mercenaries and the descendents of mercenaries, most of us."
Future generations may not be able to make this claim.
Good for Rachel! I thought she was banned from the Tweety show after calling him a "right-wing tool". I've never seen Chris Matthews as upset as when she called him that. He has such a high opinion of his intellect and his non-partisanship, both of which are non-existent.
wmholt @ 92:
My bad! That was Stephanie Miller who called Tweety a "right-wing tool". I guess she probably *is* banned from the show. :-)

Yet even as a lame duck President, everything he wants passed legislatively is passed, even in a supposedly Democrat dominated Congress. There continues to be no oversight of this man and no mention of exposing his adminstration's crimes, nor holding it accountable! Downing Street memo, war in Iraq, disappearance of billions of dollars of tax payer dollars in Iraq, Walter Reed, Katrina, Iraq nuclear report, Blackwater, Abu Ghraib, Habeus Corpus, the corruption of the Justice Department, illegal wire/phone taps...nothing sticks to this man and nobody seems interested in holding him to account for all of this as much as they did Bill Clinton for merely getting his dick sucked! Nixon is rolling over in his grave. It is not I who am the coward for wanting to jump off this sinking ship, Sparky, but rather you and everyone else in America that see this and aren't marching in the streets! I've done my marching and too few joined me...so don't talk to me of cowardice and shame...the fact that all you can do is berate me at 1:00 in the morning for knowing a sinking ship when I see one is proof that you're just as big a coward and just as liable of shame!

There are several kinds of laughter. One is "I am laughing my ass off at you, you little twerp, because you are soooo ridiculous." Others are nervous, even fearful. Go back and look at the clip - then judge for yourself what kind of laughter it is.
Nothing makes a real jerk madder than to be laughed at. In my teens I used to laugh uproariously at every idiot I encountered. I also used to get into a whole lot of fights that I didn't start. I repeat:NOTHING makes a pompous, self-important ass madder than to get laughed at. If you'll notice, Rachael wasn't mad, Tweety was. It's called "getting his goat."
Rachael's laugh is her most effective weapon. When dealing with this kind of crap, it often says more than the words she uses. Like: "Aren't you silly, or pretentious?" or "Do you really expect us to believe that crap?"
Watch the laughter, and catch the context. It gives her the edge - even in somebody else's format.
she should have replied...
"I'd like to get you in BDU's and Boots and air drop your chickenhawk ass into Iraq,
but neither of those things are going to happen are they Chrisy?"
Darth_Romney @ 95:
That is flatly untrue. Why does he veto SEVEN times (after six years of no vetoes) this year,
if not because the Congress is blocking his legislative agenda?
The 'lame duck' issue only applies to ACTUAL Presidents elected by the people. This bastard,
foisted on us through vote-fraud, coercion, anthrax, murder, illegal war, torture, etc. is not a 'lame duck.'
His power is intact to the degree that there are Republicans in Congress (and some "Democrats").
The conspiracy to block the justice dept. and the other related conspiracies, are not 'lame duck' manifestations.
They are continued treason, criminality, and dictatorship. And the Congress -- with its impeachment power --
are not simply able to stop a coup with this much conspiracy in some sort of straightline approach such as impeachment.
[As far as I can tell, site monitor, while you removed the offending comment,

On her radio show Rachel was talking about his waterboarding comment, essentially saying he's an asshole... and she said she laughed instead of saying to him what she really wanted to in response.
The elastic band holding Tweety's mask on broke last night. The peak of his pique came when he DEMANDED to know of Rachel which Repug candidate said that this is a Christian Nation. Isn't the correct answer: D) All of Them (?) Go ahead. Line them up, turn on the cameras, and ask them. Meanwhile,Tony Perkins is on Lou Dobbs last night reciting chapter and verse how the founding fathers intended that this is a christian nation stating, "It's in the constitution".
If she would have said Ron Paul they would have cut the mike.
Slowly our prison bars are coming into view...
That may be the first and only time someone calls Alan Leyes a "Winner".
Thanks goodness he is no longer in Maryland politics.
Sorry. Alan Keyes
John Barringer @ 29:
It's relevant because if that's the case it would be yet another self-hating homosexual covering it up by shilling for the party that hates gays.
This "water-boarding is fun" theme is popping up all over. It is a concerted effort to catapult the propaganda, who is directing this stuff now that Rove is gone?
I ma so sick of electioneering and Chris Matthews loves electioneering.
Rachael Maddow is great!
I love Rachel. I listen to her AA show. I love when she's on Countdown, but damned if she didn't drop the ball wth Tweety about the comment of whether or not any of the Repug candidates called America a "Christian Nation." I watched the whole section last night, sorry, but Tweety nailed her on that and she knew it. A statistician like Randi Rhodes or even Stephanie Miller would have had sources cited before popping off like that. It's not that she was necessarily wrong either, she was simply unprepared. She going to need to pull on her 'big boy britches' and be a lot more bullet proof than this if she wants to knock heads with pundits who've been making a living off of American social divisivness for the last 7 years. I hope her new show does well, we need more like her, but for an obviously lesbian, liberal, progressive she's going to have a huge target painted on her. She needs to do her homework better if she wants an A in the class.
I gotta admit I like Alan Keyes. I don't like his politics but I like him personally. He seems genuine unlike some of his contemporaries.
"...so, Chris, you thing that Guliani won? No? How about I use this plunger on you until you change your mind. Bend over."
i think this proves that Maddow is, like Keyes, really just a clown looking for attention.
two dopes who'll probably never realize it.
Guys, we are not getting anywhere, The media are out right lyers! Ron Paul never gets the same amount of time on any issues.
I am sick to my stomach again.
Roger Bixley @ 76:
Maybe, but I sure ain't gone fall for that Chris Matthews, boobs or no boobs. And how can you tell? From where I'm sitting, he's all boob.
I agree. It's pretty sad when a loony like Alan Keyes is the smartest Republican candidate.
Did it occur to anyone that Matthews -- perhaps if only deep down inside where even he doesn't realize it -- wasn't joking? Perhaps it's the fact that so many of my professors in psychology were Freudians...but personally, I wish I could be as confident as you are that Matthews really was joking. Even if he was, I for one don't happen to find anything even remotely funny about a "joke" suggesting that someone who's "causing trouble" simply by criticizing or disagreeing with -- or yes, even mocking -- a particular political party should be tortured. Making those kinds of jokes is, in my estimation, potentially a very slippery and dangerous slope. When people get the idea that it's perfectly acceptable or even appropriate to make jokes like that, you've just narrowed the gap that much more -- however slightly -- between giving people permission to joke about it and giving people permission to do it. Sometimes, this is exactly how it starts...subtly, increasingly encouragement of the people to dehumanize their opponents (whether ethnic, religious, political, or what have you) and desensitize themselves to the idea of silencing their opponents through the use of violent force so that it becomes that much easier to justify. You know what they say about boiling a frog -- you'll never succeed if you try to put him in boiling water right away. No -- you put him in cold water and raise the temperature very slowly over time so that he doesn't realize what's happening until it's already too late.
I have an idea MSNBC, turn off camera 1, and only use the camera that is on Maddow on this show. Your ratings will double.
Roger Bixley @ 56:
the comment was my opinion and not a commentary on anyone else's post(s).
sassafra @ 80:
rachel was quite sincere and it's sad when you can't recognize that Alan Keyes pointed out how the debate was controlled by the hosts and that he was denied equal time to speak. Keyes is a zealot like the huckster, better-spoken than Ro(bot)mney, more sincere than mcLame. Just because "keyes just ain't that kinda guy", that does not mean he did not win the debate. He more clearly delineated his position than any other with a podium.
In fact, keyes, in many ways epitomizes all the current GOP stands for, except, of course, he's BLACK.
wmholt @ 92:
rachel was not the one to call chrissie the 'tool'. that was stephanie miller!
There is something inherently creept about Tweety...
but imagine if he said, "I wanna stab you, right now"...or "I wanna pull off your fingernails, hack of your hands, boil your body parts, throw a tire around
you and set you on fire and electrocute you now"
What if he said "I wanna get a rope" to Jesse Jackson, or "Let me fire up my oven" to Alan Dershowitz....rest assured people would be having a fit...so,
why don't we when he threatens to waterboard a woman?
This is an attempt on the right to make waterboarding an innocuous term so it becomes acceptable...and not for what it really is.
Like when you're mad at someone and you say, "I'm gonna KILL you!!!"
ps. Rachel, I love you and your show, and you have the cutest smile and laugh.
But rachel, here's what you do...Let Him...invite tweety on your show and say, "well, you said you wanted to waterboard me....do it"
video tape the whole thing and see what he does.
obviously no one means it when they say it (well, most)...but I think this is where this thing on waterboarding is going.
xxx @ 122:
Yup, their ratings would go up...I can't stand Matthews for more than a few seconds...but at least he mostly lets people make their points and finish sentences...unlike other talk show hosts, who shall remain nameless...
You are causing trouble here. Because you are… I would like to put you on…I would like to waterboard you right now, because there’s no way on God’s earth you believe that.
Oh, Tweety, has it really come to this?? Now waterboarding is a joke to threaten guests with whom you disagree?
---------------------------------------
It was a JOKE people... a JOKE!
Re: 114/Rollo
I noticed too, that she couldn't come up with the "Christian Nation" citations, but neither can I, other than McCain, off the top of my head. Has she asked her listeners/readers to provide her with the documentation so she can forward it all to Matthews?
Cheers,
The waterboarding comment didn't offend me, it's just joke in bad taste, probably more suited for off camera though. But the way Matthews attacked Maddows about the Christian Nation thing pissed me off the most. When have the candidates said that? When have they not!
Rachel Maddow is very smart and has a wicked sense of humor which makes poor Tweety look even more foolish than normal.
Chris May @ 128:
Guess what?
I DON'T CARE.
Do you see me laughing?!? Ummm...NO. You don't. Maybe it really was intended as a joke -- but that doesn't mean that I have no right to take offense or to perceive it in a very different manner from what may (and I'm using that word deliberately) have been intended. The intent may not have been malicious -- but intent is only half of the equation. Perception is the other. Good or even neutral intentions, quite frankly, just don't cut it a lot of the time -- after all, the road to Hell is proverbially said to be paved with them.
As I said before, perhaps this is at least in part due to the fact that my psychology studies in college were heavily based on Freud -- and yes, I know that even he said "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" -- but at least to my way of thinking, the primary purposes of humor are 1) fostering a sense of camaraderie or inclusion and 2) avoiding or defusing conflict and hostility. The sort of mean-spirited "humor" (which I don't consider to be anything of the sort) not only fails to fulfill either of these objectives but in fact does the exact opposite -- it expresses antagonism toward the "other" (in this case, Maddow and possibly others who share her views) and fosters the spirit of hostility. Mean-spirited humor in my view is not much more than an expression of passive-aggressive violence, a form of emotional guerilla warfare, as likely as not a manifestation of the savage and violent impulses of the Id given expression in a diluted and socially-acceptable form. People like Matthews resort to this kind of "humor" because they lack the courage (and possibly also the self-awareness) to openly acknowledge just how much they truly hate their opponent and desire the opponent's destruction -- but since they know on some level that they cannot express this hatred openly without drawing down condemnation, possibly even from people on their "side", they dismiss it as "humor" in order to avoid facing the repurcussions that a direct expression of hostility would bring down upon them. In short, it's quite often an attempt to strike a blow at your opponent yet attempting to avoid all responsibility for that blow -- possibly even giving yourself an excuse to claim victimization if your opponent chooses to protest or retaliate.
Chris May @ 128:
...and many a truth is spoken in jest. Look at Matthews' face and listen to the tone of his voice. He is not amused or amusing, he is irritated and petulant. This is not the behavior of a good host or an open-minded person.
So why is Matthews so angry? First, because Maddow is not playing by his rule book, and he was caught off guard. Matthews treats politics likes sports, and he wanted some predictable "color" commentary from Maddow. She gave him color commentary, but not the kind he was expecting.
Matthews is clearly intimidated by Maddow, and he is trying to bully her into submission. The way she laughed off his childish threat probably kept him awake that night. Matthews has behaved in a disturbing manner with other female guests, blatantly flirting and fawning like a 13 year old boy, and in such an excessive and intrusive way that he came across like a bully with them too, just an amorous bully.
Matthews is one of the creepiest people on TV.
What bug crawled up Matthews backside lately? I agree he seems a bit more perturbed than usual. Remember that fateful Daily Show interview? The "worst one of his life"? I think there's been some soul-searching on his part... I'm generally an asshole, but not SO much of one that I wouldn't give Chris the benefit of the doubt that he really is trying to be more honest. "Life as life" instead of "life as a campaign".
It's like he's trying to look hard (get hard? ew.) for "hardball". To be taken seriously; less joking around than he used to. So good luck and all that... but I won't hold my breath...
rachel is brilliant again and chris is too dumb to appreciate it.
"I would like to waterboard you right now..." Al Franken revealed the correct phrase for that: "Kidding on the square." That's when somebody "kids" about something over the top that they actually believe. Tweety really does believe in physically punishing his political opponents or anybody who challenges his insanity with a rational observation. He says "waterboard you" with a smile, but hey, he really, really means it. Tweety has serious hostility issues towards women, especially brave, smart ones like Rachael Maddow. I bet he really lets the world hear about it after he's had a few drinks, too.
Nothing pisses off those pigs more than a smart woman with a sense of humor, and the balls to use it. Can't wait for Rachaels' show.
alan crazy was an attempt to cut time from Dr. paul.
A farce and shame.
He didn't say anything even mildly intelligent or worth hearing and nobody gives a rats ass about his bible thumping babble.
Pretty trashy Tweety!
If Keys qualifies as crazy, Matthews is certifiably pychotic. How do all the boy sopranos on MSNBC stay on the air. Lesbo Rachel is not only more masculine than
Matthews, Carlson and Buchanan, she is infinitely more intelligent.
