Does anyone care about newspaper endorsements anymore?

Des Moines Register endorses McCain and Clinton. Boston Globe endorses McCain and Obama.

McCain? Are these papers sucking up because their readers are of his demographic? Just asking....

UPDATE: Oh Judas Priest. Word is out that Lieberman is going to endorse McCain today as well? I thought Joe was an Independent. Pffft. Does he think we forgot this?

Lieberman did endorse McCain. So much for his "independence." Can we call him a Republican now?

Michael's picture

I thnk that we should name a new party for him, called the party of Israel, or something to that effect. Joe said he was putting country before party, he just didn't happen to tell us which country.

LIEberman is a literally a piece of crap. I hope the people that kept him in office are proud of themselves.

Hey Connecticut, are are you tired of this nasty toad pissing on you yet? I truly think he hates Democrats because they dumped his ass. Lieberman acts like a jilted lover. Joe, sure, we don't want you but neither does the Repubs. I'm so glad in Illinois our senators Obama and Durbin proudly represent us. Connecticut must be a confused, fucked up place to live.

I am sure the Connecticut Republican party is very proud. They sandbagged their own guy in order to keep a NeoCon foreign policy interventionalist on major committees in the Senate. Hell they even got him to completely turn away from the Katrina investigations he promised during the campaign. After 06 when the Dems pick up a few seats his committee chair needs to be taken away from him.

The days of the very exclusive ink and paper news, editorial and opposite editorial are gone.
They have been replaced by a more open WEB based news, editorial and opposite editorial, sometimes trivialized as just a BLOG.

Newspaper endorsements will have some influence in Iowa and in New Hampshire. To maintain this tradition, the papers there feel obliged to endorse someone in each party.

Perhaps endorsing a non-viable John McCain is these papers' equivalent of endorsing "none-of-the-above" for the Republican side. One can only hope it comes out that way.

Jenny'O's picture

no you are wrong. joe lieberman is a democrat. i know because i saw his endorsement on the news ticker on fox news and he was definately labeled D for democrat, not I for independent, idiot, isolated and ignorable...as in "aww! isn't he just the most ignorable thing you've evah seen?"

"Lieberman is going to endorse McCain." should be changed to the past tense "Has endorsed". Just sayin'............

I was watching HillC and JMc this morning on the Today Show, and they were both tickled pink about the endorsements (no, really). I just kept shouting at the television - "but it's IOWA!!" (:>

I knew they'd try to recycle McCain.

To the extent that McInsane still had any chance, LIEberman's kiss of death just squished it.

yes, of course newspaper endorsements still mean something. obviously not to the extent they have in decades past but a lot of people do still care. such as senior citizens and those w/o internet access.

and then there is joe LIEberman. if them dems wanted to, for once, show that they have courage they would cut liebmeran off. no more causcusing, no more chairman position, no more seats on any committee, etc. why would you honor a man that has showed such dishonor? the fact that he gives the dems a majority doesn't mean shit if he stabs them in the back at every possible opportunity.

nothin like some good ol' Joementum to sink a campaign
glad to see his endorsement go somewhere it can't do any harm to any of the democratica candidates

“Does anyone care about newspaper endorsements anymore?”

Newspapers steady & continous nose-dive in sale answers that question. Since they now make the bulk of their revenues from ads paid for by Corporations, people know where their loyalty is & don't trust them.

As a constituent of Joe "The Snake" Lieberman, I am again appalled by his actions. I am again as disappointed with his so called "representation" ( who exactly is it that you DO represent Joe??? ) , as I am proud of the honorable Senator Dodd being from CT.

It's nice to see the BushCo goons give McCain the good ol' college try, in spite of the extreme unlikeliness of Crazy Uncle John actually getting any traction with voters. Shows just how truly desperate they are.

Good. Sucks to be them but it's sucked harder for us these last 7 (15?) years. Glad they're scared by Huckleberry and Mitt.

As for Holy Joe Lieberman (D-CT...no, I-CT...no, R-CT...no, oh heck let's be honest: R-IS), for the love of J*****a, please don't put up any video of his endorsement. Not sure I could stomach poor droopy giving the thumbs up to St. John. Been a rough Holiday season...

I don't get why anyone here even cares. Everyone who was a part of the DLC, including the Clintons, the Gores, and Holy Joe, is a right-winger. Always was, always will be. It's time to stop caring about these farts whose day is over and start moving the country back to the center again (which, let's face it, is still a compromise under today's political atmosphere, but we'll have to go through the center to get back to the left).

Okay, Democratic party, this is YOUR vice presidential pick from a mere two elections ago.

This is the man who you all said we must support. Those of us who couldn't, because he's an irredeemable sleaze, were branded traitors. Deserters. Unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky, leftist pinko commie hippies with a bunch of delusional ideas like "good government" and "effective leadership" and "not selling this country to the lowest bidder just because he's the president's cousin and he got a law degree from Bible College."

So, what would you have us supporting now? Joe Lieberman running for president on Al Gore's legacy, picking McCain as his running mate and running an all "Bomb Iran" campaign? How hot must the water get before the frog calls "bullshit?"

Look. I agree: nothing is worse than letting the Republicans run things.

So, maybe if you can just, oh, I don't know, say, get your presidential-level party leaders to NOT openly endorse the opposition, maybe, just maybe, you can lure some of us back with all that "good work" you plan on doing once you're done giving the Republicans everything they want.

Lieberman is going to endorse McCain

Was this really a surprise? Lieberman has been a Republican for far more years then even he can count...and he's one of the dumber Republicans at that (and that's REALLY saying something) so for him to endorse a Republican is no surprise - it would be more of a surprise if he actually endorsed someone who might be in the final running.

Thanks for posting a link to the Des Moines Register for Clinton. I think this is a powerful endorsement and they state their case very well for choosing Clinton. Other than Taylor Marsh http://www.taylormarsh.com/ I have not seen any notice of what enormous support this means for Clinton. I live in Iowa. I will caucus for Hillary. Many Iowans wait for this endorsement before making up their minds and I expect to caucus for Hillary with them January 3rd.

I got tired of pointing that out whenever I heard Dems whine about Nader whenever they made the ridiculous claim that a vote for Nader was a vote for Bush, completely ignoring the fact that a vote for Gore was also a vote for Lieberman.

Maybe a hint for the DNC/DLC is in order: guys, enabling the GOP is nowhere near the same as being the opposition to the GOP... just in case the Dems needed a refresher on what is what. Who knows maybe is just a case of mistaken dictionary definitions. But I will not hold my breath, I think the most likely culprit is what Nader was crucified for pointing a while ago, at the end of the day there is really little difference between the two parties.

After seeing the Dems blame everyone but themselves for their lack of willingness to fight for the common people, even when wining by default as it was the case of the 06 elections... I am just sad I did not change my affiliation to Green in 2000.

It would be kind of ironic if Conn was the Constitution State and the State in which the person who ended it was also born. Almost like an Alpha-Omega sort of deal...

Yes, we are REAL tired of Joe the snake, but the man is correct, it was the Republicrooks who put him in office. They could not beat Lamont in the poles, so they put their votes behind the snake, now he is theirs.

And don't remind us that GWB was born in New Haven, it makes us feel kind of dirty or something, makes one want to go take a shower.

I got tired of pointing that out whenever I heard Dems whine about Nader whenever they made the ridiculous claim that a vote for Nader was a vote for Bush, completely ignoring the fact that a vote for Gore was also a vote for Lieberman.

Especially considering that it can merely be argued that a vote for Nader was EFFECTIVELY a vote for Bush in SOME states.

But a vote for Gore was LITERALLY a vote for Lieberman in EVERY state.

And I (obviously) have no problem with Gore/Lieberman voters. What I have a problem with is being lectured by Democrats that I owe them my vote when I'M NOT A DEMOCRAT!!!

Jesus. I'm an independent voter who generally supports Democratic candidates and I give a rat's ass about who's in charge of what sub-caucus or how the leadership is or is not supporting the rank and file congressfolk.

To me, it's all one big product you're selling: The Democratic Party(tm). You want me to buy? Make it a worthwhile product.

If you're selling soda and you hand me a bottle and it tastes like piss, I'm going to stop drinking it and I'm not going to buy any more. If you then tell me that failure on my part to drink your bottle of piss will result in your bullying opponent force feeding me a shit sandwich, then I'm going to suspect that you're working together to sell piss and shit to people who don't want piss and shit.

So, I'll deal with Mr. Shit Sandwich when he arrives, but until then you can take your bottle and piss off with it.

And to those who will then say "okay, Jason, yes, but who will you vote FOR? What will you SUPPORT?" I say: real Democrats. When you've got one, let me know.

More from Joe on party loyalty from the Lieberman-Lamont debate (1 min 45 secs into this video):

I've been a Democrat all my life and I must say I laugh at Ned Lamont holding up party loyalty up as a test of my candidacy. He fails that test.

So he fails his own test. I'm the Democrat in this race.

And don't remind us that GWB was born in New Haven, it makes us feel kind of dirty or something, makes one want to go take a shower.

I guess that reminding you about the long career that GBW's granddaddy, Prescott Bush, had as a Conn Senator may be out of the question? It seems that Conn has a history of electing total douche bags to represent them in the Senate. Alas, such is the dichotomy of the old struggle in the North East between old money and strong labor.

Prescott Bush was born in Ohio it seems, so Conn should not be the only ones to blame :-).

Just as a cancer that always comes back unless fully radiated and killed, the Bushes got their start as war profiteers. Prescott's dad made a fortune speculating on military contracts during the early part of the XX century. Prescott got a cushy officer post in WWI which he milked in order to get a head start in his political career. Bush's granddad shaw little to no action and he lied about several military accolades he never won --the apology came after he had milked the full effect of his claims, which seems to be a common MO for the Bush family. No wonder that GOPers, the Bushes especially, consider FDR to be pretty much the anti-Christ; good ol' Franklin didn't let Prescott get away with having his cake (fund the nazis) and eat it too (profit handsomely from US war contracts). It is being said that Eisenhower's farewell speech was a clear warning about the take over of the GOP by war profiteer clans like the Bushes who had made money off the public tit under arms contracts and were completely dependent on the US' war machine to maintain their unsustainable greed. It is clear now, but looking at GBW and Cheney's MO... the conservative movement is just but a facade for a set of big wealthy families that act more akin to a parasite (the military industrial complex) sucking dry its poor host (the US tax payer). So I always found it ironic when the GOPer royalty insults those less fortunate in our society for expecting some sort of humane treatment by the social services funded by our tax dollars, when themselves (the creme of the creme of the GOP) have always lived off the public tit either directly (government positions) or indirectly (big business that depend mostly on government contracts).

I don't think that Conn should apologize as much as Yale should for enabling generations of self entitled douche bags, New Heaven is a clear example of what "Robber Barons" and their MO is all about: a beautiful campus of faux old buildings, full of self entitled jackasses, and surrounded by a fence that protects them from the literal shit hole that they are surrounded by and for which they could give two shits about.

If anything, Connecticut is just but a microcosms of what the right wing has set up to achieve for the better part of almost a century (since the great depression). Which is to return the glory days of the robber barons back in full force.

So the apology needs to be state wide, not on a state per sate basis. Except maybe for Texas, who allowed this dumb ass to play cowboy dress up and had enough closeted homosexual good ol' Country boys fall head over heads over a faux macho ranger who is afraid of horses... screw'em

If they had any sort of integrity, the newspaper should have picked "none of the above" because a) it's the truth, and b) it is the powerful message that should be sent by people in the media who as the 4th state have a responsibility with this country not a specific political party, period.

So, yes "none of the above" would have been not only the only answer in this case, but the only correct one to boot. Instead they are endorsing a lunatic with early onset of dementia starting to show. I mean, seriously this is what we expect and tolerate? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?
