Mid Day Open Thread--Christmas Shopping Edition

In order for all of us at C&L to get some much deserved time over the holidays with our friends and loved ones, John Amato has decided that we will be posting a little less over the next couple of weeks. We'll still be around for any breaking news, but we'll do fewer regular posts and host an open thread every afternoon.

For this open thread, I was inspired by my chronically procrastinating husband, who is braving the traffic and jammed parking lots to go finish(begin?) his shopping on this last weekend before Christmas. It made me think of some gifts I would love to give people we feature here on C&L regularly (my phone number to Keith Olbermann notwithstanding).

Like this for Chris Matthews...

Or these cards for Culture Warrior Bill O'Reilly ...

Or this for Campbell Brown and Dan Senor's new baby...

...and lest we forget, a certain Mr. Amato is just begging to find this under his Christmas tree.

So what kind of gifts would you like to give? And please, keep it family-friendly.

I have one of those for my husband. He wears it out all the time and gets SO many thumbs up from people who actually read it. :)

I'm giving this Mitt Romney because he's always been a hunter. Okay, only shot a couple of small varmints. And because the NRA endorsed him. Okay, they didn't but you know.

I took a small -- very small -- stand for privacy while Christmas shopping at my local Sh*rper Im*ge Store while Christmas shopping yesterday... I had one item, politely waited in line to purchase said item -- I even had cash to pay with.

When it was my turn to purchase, the man behind the counter politely asked for my name and I asked:

"Do I have to give you my name to purchase this item?"

He said no, but that it was for my convenience that they put me in their database, so that If I ever had to return the said item, I wouldn't need my receipt.

I said, "That's ok, I'll pass. I don't want to be in your database."

He asked again: "Can I at least have your name?"

I said, "No" --- the poor man was clearly flummoxed, and he finally pressed some button on the machine and I was able to complete the transaction and be on my way... but it took 2X as long to purchase the item than if I just went to T*rg*t, where their whole philosophy is to get the customer out the door as quickly as possible or they penalize the cashier.

Anyway... looking forward to the day when I can just swipe my arm past the the pay scanner with little imbedded chip that one will get when they are born and be on my way... every part of everu purchase recorded for the government to see...

I'm sending this card out to Falafel Bill, Glenn Beck, and Tucker. Christmas cheer from the cheerleaders.

The FBI collecting data on fingerprints, etc. isn't exactly earth shattering news... they've been pretty much doing that since the day the agency was founded. Though I too would be wary of big box stores collecting fingerprint info and shuffling it off to the FBI.

Just heard an OnStar commercial on the radio:

Woman crying. Emergency situation. Understanding operator gets doctor on phone. Understanding operator says she's ready to call an ambulance, if necessary.

It occurred to me that THIS is the privatization of the emergency 911 service that our taxdollars pay for.

Anybody else make this connection?

Think about it: If we privatize everything, we have to pay a fee to have or enjoy everything, even life-threatening matters.

Do you really think our taxes are going to go down as services such as 911 are privatized? Not only will we be paying high or the same taxes, we'll have to pay a corporation a monthly fee for everything that is now tax-funded.

It's getting scary in this country.

If I could choose a gift, it would be some Medical Marijuana for all of the soldiers returning home with PTSD.

If it's safe and effective enough for Israeli soldiers, then ours should have legal access to the herb as well.

Just before the huge economic collapse in Argentina several years ago, everything was privatized. Even street signs had logos on them because corporations bought them as sponsors.

You can probably guess what contributed to the economic collapse.

Turkey saved the Kurds in Northern Iraq the trouble of shopping today. They dropped their bombs (no mention of the wrapping) again today, Saturday.

Of course, the good news is that the only casualties will be 'Kurdish terrorists gathered to plot against Turkey'.

Amazing the intellectual skills of some of those two, three and four-year-old Kurdish kids. If they're plotting at those ages, imagine what they'd have been able to do had they had the opportunity to grow up.

You know, the CIA is so damned difficult to shop for, not because they have everything, but just because they're so damned difficult about everything.

Here we set up an agency for the purpose of deceiving, lying, cheating, stealing, running dope, torturing folks, laundering money, setting up secret companies, bank accounts, and agents in foreign lands, as well as domestically, in short, doing whatever they can to assure their continued existence and growth, including murder, assassination, execution, and what do they do?!

They lie to us. They hide things from us.

And we get upset!

Do you realize how lucky we are we have not yet crossed the line, wherever it is they have drawn it, that would cause them to kill us all??!!

Isn't it amazing how Christmas can screw things up?

Look at the Giulianis.

All Judith wanted was a little pre-Christmas fu*k,

Rudy couldn't get it up'

So he pleaded a 'headache'.

The effing plane turned around, he ended up in a hospital, and the next day, the story of his ED is splashed all over the MSM. As usual, they got it wrong. But think of how embarrassing it could have been, not to mention the high-heel holes in the head Rudy would have suffered, had they got it right.

I cannot leave my home, and I'd like to find a funny, you're-a-good-friend card and/or small gift I can buy on-line for a female friend who lives in Belgium half-time, and is there now, and has the political sensibilities we do. Any suggestions? She's very bright, speaks six languages, was euro-educated, works for the EU, loves dogs, hates Bush. I'd appreciate your suggestion(s).

It's a bit shocking & disheartening to find a regular contributor referring to her husband's participation in this mass orgy of consumerism as "his shopping" .. as if each of us has an obligation to participate ..

We've all got to change our habits if we're going to emerge from the darkness ..

"Identity Through Consumption" was the catch-phrase sold by Madison Avenue Psychiatrists to their Advertising Agency Clients in the mid-60's.

And orgies of mass consumption have become the backbone of American "culture" since.

Giving up the orgies of mass consumption is just as important as bringing the Military Industrial Complex under control.

Conyers does NOT care about Wexler’s Petition to start Cheney impeachment hearings!

Read the transcript from Democracy Now.

http://willyloman.wordpress.com/2007/12/22/from-democracy-now-interview-...

He will NOT allow impeachment hearings to take place.

Conyers knows that Pelosi will undercut the efforts of impeachment rather than helping to build a bi-partisan coalition to impeach.

Conyers knows that Pelosi will again be Speaker of the House next year and she will take him off the Judiciary Committee if he goes against her wishes. It’s a “lose-lose” for him and impeachment.

Let’s help him and the rest of the members of the House of Representatives by removing an obstructionist Speaker. It can be done and must be done to start the impeachment process.

one thing's clear in this election, hrc is the dlc's gal.

but, who really are the dlc?

are they democratic leaders, or are they a sort of "designated losers club"?

it sure seems like they specialize in sending out operatives to go lose something on behalf of the american people.

you know, like asking welterweight (and golden skull & bonesboy) john kerry to go out and tell us he'll make sure every vote will be counted, only to go down like a sack of potatoes on election day.

or asking harry reid to boldly don his mr. rogers sweater and help lead the senate into losing some more rights for the american people.

so, would it really be a bad thing if the

d-esignated
l-osers
c-lub

let the people decide this time?

Did you know the Bush regime is bombing Somalia , killing hundreds , possibly thousands , also causing thousands of refugees to flee and some being turned over to U.S. intelligence at borders . The Ethiopian attack on Somalia fully supported by bush , includes U.S. gun ships attacking Somalia .
But you wouldn't know from watching CNN or the other infotainment channels and they have the NERVE to report a French journalist kidnapped in Somalia is their VERY short around the world segment and not mention ONE FRICKEN word about what's going on there .
If CNN were in CAHOOTS with U.S. foreign , protecting it, omitting many facts and basically not reporting the occupation of AFRICA , that is expanding daily there, it couldn't look any different . So you can come to only one conclusion . Barbara Starr who was the "only reporter " with the U.S. occupation forces in Ethiopia at the beginning of the conflict and omitted many facts , knows what is going on , but refuses to report the facts , keeping americans uninformed .

But along with NBC, CBS, fox they have plenty time to cover the missing British Girl or the predictable Airport story or weather, weather, weather .

Thank goodness for Chris-Floyd .com who is constantly monitoring the story and reporting many details about the wAR on Somalia .

Wow. I just meant that he went out to get me a Christmas present. There's no obligation to mass consumerism or consumption. There's an obligation to be nice to his wife. You'd be surprised how easy that is. Last year, it was a gift certificate to get a manicure/pedicure. I'm not the jewelry/expensive toys kind of gal.

And for what it's worth, my children were REQUIRED to make gifts for their family so that they understood that the season is about GIVING, not receiving.
