Again, because it was deleted by C&L censors, the great Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson had died. Is it because he isn't American that his death wasn't noted on this site? Or is it because John Amato doesn't understand Jazz?

Yeah, the cool kids scared me away from another blog.....meanies...

...but I have sung / read / played music on exactly ONE commercial, and I still get / love this. Pay was equal to about 10 coffeehouse gigs, though....

You funny!

There's somethin' odd goin' on with the site. I've got a feelin' it's related to WordPress. I keep gettin' the "Error 404: Requested page not found" message. There are 228 comments on last night's Pelosi Open thread, yet everything after comment 212 comes and goes(I'm tryin' to have a conversation w/someone there, so I know there are 16 more comments there!).

And, Canuknotusa, I don't think the site monitors are around tonight. They probably took the holiday off. But, hey, they deserve some rest.

Oh, yeah, and when I hit "Refresh Comments" all of the comments disappear. And when I send this comment there's a 50/50 chance the internet will stop. All of it.

Honestly, my best guess is that Amato's go-to tech person is gone.

And when I posted that last one every comment disappeared. I had to backdoor through a thread that wasn't givin' me that "404 Error" message.

I dunno if you were here in the HaloScan days, suckerforpuns, but this type of thing happened at least once a week back then, for about 2 months, before Amato went to WordPress. I miss one thing about HaloScan- you could use Gravatars. That made it easier to find people you were conversin' with.

I can't take this anymore! Merry Christmas/belated Winter Solstice(damned moder calendars!), everyone!

GNA!

Since I'm rather certain that John runs the WordPress software from his own server, I highly doubt it's a WordPress problem.

As a frequent if not constant visitor to C&L i find this statement insulting. Not because a Canadian said it, but because anyone said it.

Ron Paul is also a peace candidate.

Stern plays a clip of Shatner turning a board-op into quivering pile of goo during a record session. It's priceless.

The Pentagon flip-flops on our progress in Iraq. Another case of too little, too late for Bush. An Iowa voter tells it like it is.

i left a comment on the oscar peterson thread w/mucho blogwhoring, and it got eaten somewheres between "submit" and actual pixels on your screen.

but i'm not blaming c&l.

Did anyone hear? Is it true that G.W. put Santa on the no fly list?

Does anyone know if its true that G.W. put Santa on the no fly list.

Yes and on top of that Santa was just black-bagged and sent to gitmo.

And for you all, Left Toon Lane Gives you an assortment of left wing Christmas Chuckles.

This session was funny, but you should try to get the tape with Pepe (what's his name?). the guy who can fart on cue, in different tones, actually play a tune you can recognize with his ass. Anyway, they had him in session for some nitwit's idea of a background tape for a bit of animation, and they went over it, and over it, etc.

By the 50th time you hear the producer say, 'Can you fart like.....?'. or 'Could you fart a little higher?', even though it's not funny in itself, you end up on the floor.

Happy 'Just A Normal Day', skippy!

Q: Why is Santa so Jolly?

A: He knows where all the naughty girls live.

It is now Christmas on the west coast of the US (never seen it, made it to Nevada thus far but i share the time zone.)

This is the one time of the year we all get to say nice things to each other in this country and i will be Goddamned if i am going to let the moment pass without having my say.

This blog is a community of shitheads, idealists, revolutionaries, naysayers, antagonists, status quo seekers, pot heads, alcoholics, poets, writers, cretins and geniouses. We have Trolls, High School Students, Scientists, Musicians, an occasional politician, Lawyers, geeks, freeks and housewives.

Are we the "Left?" Or are we a smattering of people too frustrated to sit in front of television and attempt to digest the crap they try to shove down our throats? I have no fucking idea, so don't ask me.

I do know this: I love fighting here. I love arguing here. Without this community of people i would be isolated, alone and i would feel powerless.

To the Trolls who attempt to disway us and to the learned who stear us back i want to thank you all for what you bring and wish you the best today and always.

Merry Christmas. The holiday is not a bad idea even though using a man who died over 2000 years ago (if he ever existed at all) to control us and send us into battles and wars is a really really bad idea.

Some trolls are just idiots who are looking for trouble. Others think they know it all, which is really annoying to those of us who do.

But some are just playing the Devil's Advocate in order to stimulate debate. One of the problems with authoritarians and many on the so-called "Christian" right is that they stifle dissent and refuse to listen to any alternative points of view.

No liberal should be afraid to engage in debate. Use it to refine and improve your arguments. In the marketplace of ideas, truth will win out. It's conservatives that want to monopolize thought.

Oh yeah, Merry Christmas to one and all!

Well, I'm probably more Christian than those that claim that they're Christians these days ...

ThanX broe, and Merry Christmas to all that celebrate it!

I mean, I *LOVE* folk that worship the first long-haired hippie!!!!

That was pretty much my point, myiq2xu.

But you knew that. :)

Yes, Stan. You are.

You know what the best thing about Christmas Day is?? December 26th is right around the corner. THEN maybe I can stop seeing those insipid Jared Jewelers commercials as well as commercials about giving Mercedes Benzes for Christmas. Happy friggin' Holidays everybody!

Merry Christmas

Watching CNN the Newsier channel this day. They are talking about the current dialog of faith based language used so far in the politics, the Holiday vs Christmas, and the first amendment, you know the part about separation of church and state.

The challenge is growing to identify what America is really going to be. The question is starting to beg the electorate for not a divine leader, but a divine understanding in leadership in this ideal with this separation, because history is telling us it is not easy, because we are all mortal.

Hillary Clinton displayed this in a very personal observation on the CNN debate the other day. To me this solidifies Hillary’s understanding of this problem. Were, Obama and Edwards talked about faith but did not hit the target even with snit remarks and faith based jingles, they both just blew by the basic in understanding were leadership is in this separation. It was simple, personal and individual, for all of us no matter what the world thinks. The minority triangle, Gay’s, Black’s, Latino, should totally appreciate that ideal, it resonates up with the basics of our Constitution.

The founding fathers were considered brilliant, and thoughtful, however, as we all reflect in time about those minds that forged to divide church and state, more over not to establish or promote any single religion, how in the heck are we going to do it, and survive through generations? The questions just latch on one after another.

Study and debate, kick the ideal around a little bit, talk to people and share ideals we will all succeed.

Here is a short story, Riding around with a few associates while conversation was roaring, laughter was loud wild, a cute female driver. One of the fellows had the latest and greatest IPOD video, audio, you know ear plugs and all. They where passing it around and talking. However, I did not understand a word they are saying. Just knew they were talking about the music and impressed by it. Cool. I was the only white guy in the vehicle, stayed quiet and silent through the whole thing looking out the window. Thought maybe I would get chance to see this new technology, no it didn’t happen. So, in contemporary social real time what did I learn? Answer: Better ask some questions and find out whats going on, is this conversational samurais, certainly zero Samaritan nothing happening here.

By chance, one of the black guys came along with me, as we parted in our travels. I had a question about the “Black Culture”, why do Black men call themselves “Dogs”, like in conversations one can hear the term “hey dog how you doin?”. Or, observing the IPOD “Check this out Dog”. I felt disconnected and needed some answers for that. Well, the Black guy was a history major happy to explain a whole lot, more then expected but appreciated. This Black Guy took me through a mental journey though the origins of “The Dog Language”. Started from George Clinton who he claims is the first to introduce rap or wordplay in rhythm, cadence, or what one calls hip-hop, Jay-Z and a huge list of others.

Still looking up stuff about rap, and wordplay. I did not mention though that most frequently when riding in the streets over hearing loud music in the summer time invariably winds up being songs about hate, fortification, that word play the best of what one could consider nothing more then “cursive swift talk”. Or social hate.

Obama, as a Black President it occurred to me no one asked him how he might address this social issue. Right in our back yard wide spread in America belligerent cursive language is sold over the counter that could never be played on radio. A social tragedy doing nothing more then generating a economic culture with a hatful rhythm that’s snappy and mantra, all connected to drugs misery, plainly a huge social dysfunctional Black society trailing to suicides, murder, theft, sex, and prison.

There is a growing perspective that as a Legal law teacher at the University of Chicago, Obama would make the effort to address this. That’s a question that needs to be asked. Perhaps he was too busy, or just ignored it. Thinking about it one could place this dilemma as severe as the torture debate that is going on now. It’s all disgusting, way too suppressed by the Mainstream Media. Actually, when one takes a hard look at this Black rap word-play culture that is largely “Swift Cursive Hate Language, why isn’t Obama taking a leadership role to address this? If Obama can’t get the back yards cleaned up, how is he going to change the world?

So the next time you run into a glitch, get on all fours before your screen, scratch the floor vigorously as if you were try to dig yourself a nest, shout 'Grawk, Grawk, Grawk', spin around in a circle three times, and Voila!, you'll find everything works fine.

Conyers knows that Pelosi will again be Speaker of the House next year and she will take him off the Judiciary Committee if he goes against her wishes. It’s a “lose-lose” for him and impeachment.

Let’s help him and the rest of the members of the House of Representatives by removing an obstructionist Speaker. It can be done and must be done to start the impeachment process.

Returning to On Topic:

One of the aspects of my professional musician career is wearing the Audio Engineer hat. Sessions like the one the Santa went through are definitely the norm ... however I'd like to offer one teeny tiny reality check vis-a-vis the talent/producer relationship. If said talent is a local hire, or a career voiceover pro, the session will almost invariably run its course as satirized so well in the clip. However, if the talent is a National Star (actor/actress/singer etc), then I've noticed a sea-change in everyone's attitude -- weirdly, every take they do, no matter how tentative or out-of-tune, is perfect!!! As a rule they're out of the booth in ten minutes or so. (Of course, they do wind up investing as much session time as their less luminous peers since everyone wants to line up & tell them how wonderful they were at that last concert/movie/celebrity appearance etc, and how coincidentally they are personal favorites etc etc.)

This leads me to conclude that for this clip the agency didn't spend the bux & hire the real SC. If so, he'd-a been outta there after the third "ho", to the heartfelt kowtowocity of the various agency guys.

A confluence of the above behavior patterns occurred at my studio a few weeks ago, when a singer/voiceover talent pal of mine came in to do some agency work. The selfsame producers had hired her for many past sessions in which her takes were rather worked over in the manner of the clip -- but lo! this time it was different. She had just been awarded a major role in an upcoming B'way musical, was leaving our hick burg and was now stepping into National Starhood. Her first take turned out -- you guessed it -- perfect!!!!

pookapooka is **dead** on here... I've sung commercials for over 20 years now, and these sessions are pretty close to the norm. I'm also a pro photographer, and this video reminded me as much of commercial shoots as it did vocal sessions.

It all depends completely on the studio I'm singing for and how much creative control they exert over the project. My main studio is nothing like this; however, I've been in sessions where the talent was raked over coals simply because the Creative Director was in the house and had no clue of what he was actually looking for.

...and, yeah - most star talent get big-time breaks on number of takes and pitch accuracy! Funny stuff.
