Romney takes the low road

It’s likely my standards are low, but I’ve been relatively pleased that the presidential race has featured very little talk about the Lewinsky scandal. Going into the race, I was a little worried the media would be preoccupied with this nonsense, and Republican candidates, anxious to score cheap points, would make hay of the decade-old controversy.

By and large, that hasn’t happened. But leave it to Mitt Romney to take the low road.

“We’ll try and represent ourselves and our nation well also to our kids because I think, I think kids watch the White House and there have been failures in the past in the White House — if you go back to the Clinton years and recognize that — that I think had an enormous impact on the culture of our country,” Romney said. “And we’ll do our very best, our whole family will to — well, if we can’t be perfect, we’ll do our best to uphold and to be a good example for the kinds of values I think people expect from our leaders.”

Wow, that sure is dumb. The Lewinsky scandal had an “enormous impact” undermining American culture? Seriously?

I can appreciate the fact that Romney is in a tough spot right now, but gratuitous references to Clinton scandals in the 1990s only make him look desperate and classless.

Klyde, because we're experiencing a credit crisis, a horribly executed "war", expensive gas, expensive groceries, manufacturing shrinkage, politicization of the Judicial branch, crimes committed (why have a retro immunity bill, when immunity was already provided for? because a crime was committed!), we're at a weak point in history and he's talking about an ex-President.

What do you expect from a guy who said:
"I'm not sure whether Governor Huckabee meant the attack as a joke, but this is no time to be mocking our president, and it's in bad taste, I think that we should come together and recognize the great work our president is doing, and not take our rhetoric or our plays from the Democratic playbook, it's the kind of stuff you'd expect from the Democrats, but it surely is nothing you'd expect from a presidential contender on the republican side."

He is a republican and a religious freak, what do you expect?

Andre's picture

The Lewinsky noise may/will start as soon as the general election race does. The GOP has been getting chump change for contributions; they haven't wanted to spend up all of their tough money before understanding who they'll be tearing apart for another six months.

Although I definitely detect a tidal wave of pre-ejaculate from the right over the opportunity to trash Hillary until the dawn of time this year even though she may not win the primaries. CNN's "Broken Government" show chronicled groups out there already spending the time and money designing anti-Hillary media angles with no decided primary. Still, if they could afford it, they would have been much worse by now.

Well thankfully we had a scandal ridden, constitution shredding, budget busting, deficit spending, tax cutting for the rich, lie based war starting, ally alienating, enemy embolding, torturing, corrupt to the core, military depleting Republican White House afterwards to bring America back from the Clinton plagued years of peace, record prosperity and international respect.

This "man" truly is a shameless, deceitful, say anything, low life, whore. May he go down in flames.

I wish the media would have ignored it ten years ago too because it DID have a negative impact in society. Yes, kids were affected. O.S. became an issue for our kids before they were old enough to deal with it.

Bokonon's picture

Oh, yes. The culture of our country. Indeed.

And the children. Let's never, never forget the effect that Bill Clinton had on all the little children. Poor children, with their broken hearts. Alas.

Romney is just tossing out red meat for the primary voters, hoping that they are idiots and can be distracted from further movement in the direction of Mike Huckabee. Nothing better when you are floundering than waving the bloody shirt of the old impeachment battles, eh, Mitt? Brings you right back to the grand ol' days where we spent two years talking about blowjobs and civil perjury being "high crimes and misdemeanors."

Oh ... the moral clarity of those times.

This is predictible and calculated. It is part and parcel of Romney's attempts to build his campaign on appeals to the most conservative elements among the GOP's primary voters. He can do it at no cost at all, and it just might get him something.

Besides, what has Romney got to loose -- his dignity? The man can't possibly behave like a bigger jackass than he already has.

I think it is fair to say for the record that what Clinton did indeed had an impact on America's culture, including the non-right. But it was similar to the fall-out from Larry Craig's indiscretion: a feeling like people had something thrust upon them that they'd rather not have had so much intimate knowledge about, such as the networking systems of bathroom hook-up-cruising gay sex.

And once it's there, it's there... and well, it's difficult to deal with, and I'm sure a lot of people who weren't hardcore right wingers felt caught up in the confusion of Clinton's immoral act. I think the accepted-as-known position the liberal population ultimately took on the issue was that it eroded their ability to believe in him as a role model, but fairness dictates that he be judged on his handling of his job, as was the case before presidential affairs could be exposed, and his indiscretion did not really cross streams in any critical way with his professional ability to function as president, despite its faith-shaking affect on the people.

Mr Pelicano's picture

Wow. That would explain the rash of blow jobs that broke out in elementary schools all over the country after the Lewinsky scandal broke. Little girls, in cute blue dresses, cornering little boys on the playground and getting busy. I don't think we've recovered from that horrible time... [mega snark]

Fortunately, we know from watching beauty pageant queens that America's children don't even know where Washington DC is or that the United States (whatever that is) has a President (whatever that is).

For democrats to take this BS about Bill Clinton and run with it, shows why our leaders do not have the backbone to fight for our constitution , democracy and bill of rights, they are just doing as the same as their voters.
How can you possibly take these lies and BS about Clinton when Bush , Cheney and his whole d... republican administration has been the most deceitful, corrupted, criminal administration as "any" country in our history.
Clinton was wrong with his actions and lie about sex, but the very republicans that were attacking him like newt and the other republicans were at "the very same time" doing acts that were as bad or worst then that of Clinton.
Are we starting to be sheep just following the posting or the RNC and their corporate  news media to attack our ex democratic president which by "far" was a nuch better president even with his errors then the last 5 plus republican presidents.
Take Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. Bush Jr , please do because I wish I never see another one like any of them.
They have to be among the worst, if not the worst presidents which America has ever had.
Are the democrats being dumbed down by the news media and RNC or just following the leader like the republican sheep.

This is one conservative dissonance I've never been able to fully grasp.

Government can't be trusted. Government can't be trusted to clean the air or the water. Government can't be trusted to education children or to regulate essential services.

Government can't be trust.

HOWEVER...

Government can and should provide moral guidance. That's, in fact, the main thing government should do: tell people how to act.

So, why is it that an institution that cannot be trusted to handle simple, basic, one-size-fits-all things like, oh, say, keeping fucking lead out of children's toys CAN be trusted to espouse universal morality when you can't get three people on this planet to agree as to what that is?

And I thought conservatives were supposed to be no-nonsense, down-to-earth, "results matter" kinds of people. I thought it was liberals who were guilty of foisting unrealistic ideals on the taxpayers.

Or has abstinence-only education started working in the past week?

I was thinking about this the other day, how the Republicans tried to claim during the Lewinsky matter that Clinton had corrupted our kids and now they think it's ok to have oral sex, etc. They had no evidence but they kept saying this. If that is the standard, that the President's behavior sets the moral tone for our children, then perhaps Willard Romney should first look with concern to George W. Bush, who has taught our kids to lie, cheat, steal, draft dodge, do drugs, be an alcoholic, waste money, ignore sound advice, and escape all accountability for one's actions.

Well said. The Republican congress, courts and White House have done more, perhaps irreparable damage, to this nation than any Islamic terrorist or Osama bin Laden could have ever hoped to do. Most of them should be tried for high treason against the United States, imprisoned, deported or worse.

You got it Mitt. Those wonderful republican values should be revisited every day until next November.

Starting with the unprecedented corruption, blatant thievery, and complete disregard for our constitution and the rule of law. Plus the wonderful way the GOP has all but destroyed the standard of living for 90% of the population, so that the privileged richest 2% can steal all of the wealth in the country.

Lets also not forget the "compassionate" undermining of every social safety net (for the most vulnerable among us), so that the multi-millionaire's won't have to pay any taxes on their enormous incomes.

Another GOP value that would be a big winner, would be the sending of young Americans to die, so that a sociopathic, spoiled, imbecile-coward could steal the natural resources of another nation; then botching that war through incompetence, so that his cronies could steal the taxpayers blind.

How about the ever popular "denying health insurance to children GOP value," all in the name of parasitic insurance industry/CEO gluttony.

And the list goes on and on and on. Oh, but Clinton got a blow job!

Hey Willard, Mitt, moron, or whatever the fuck your name is; why don't you, and all the other hate-spewing, intolerant, greed-head, SOB lying republican bastards, quit lecturing the truly humane and caring people of this country (LIBERALS), and STFU you pathological privileged loser!
