Dan Abrams has been documenting the misstatements and missteps of some of the presidential candidates on the campaign trail and Wednesday night, he pulled out a whopper from the nosediving Mr. 9/11 himself. Shockingly, this little gaffe had nothing to do with 9/11, it was all about immigrants and language.

Rudy has been pretending to be tough on illegal immigration and has repeatedly said that he believes all immigrants should be able to read, write and speak English in order to become U.S. citizens -- then turns around and airs a campaign ad in Florida ...wait for it...in SPANISH. Abrams and guest Rachel Maddow couldn't contain their laughter...neither could I.

Maddow: "How do you say hypocrite in Spanish?"

Probably the same way it's said in English and French...le hypocrite

Ru-deee, Ru-deee, Ru-dee... for shame, for shame, for shame.... oh, and 9/11, 9/11, 9/11

hipócrita

Ru-deee, Ru-deee, Ru-dee... for shame, for shame, for shame.... oh, and 9/11, 9/11, 9/11

i9/11! dios mio!!!!

Well I guess the plan is to get the Spanish speaking people to vote for him and then when he's elected he will thank them for their vote by forcing them to learn English. Not the best plan I've heard of, but that's our Rudy....good old Mr. 9-11.

He could explain this by saying that if more people had spoken English on 9-11 something would have been different for him when he was protecting something, or something.

hipocrita

Whad daya want for nuthin...........RRRRubber BEEsqiuts.

Now if we can just flush once and get rid of idiots like Rudy and Tancredo and the rest of the Fear Teh Brown People crowd.

John Kerry is endorsing Obama. I guess Kerry has forgotten what a sterling job Rudy did on 9--11 to keep us all safe, or something.

Nueve Once. Vote for Rudy, the only man who actually uses that day as an opportunity.

Ah but see - he's directing it to the Cubans in Florida so that's alright. The Cubans are good Hispanics doncha know. Why they love us and our freedoms and if only they'd renounce Castro then all would be right with the world.

[deleted - off topic. gatekeepers? delusional.]

Is it 9/11 in spanish or 11/9?

"Good luck and Buenos Noches"

The HAVE to give Rachel Maddow her own show.

How does one say: "vote for me" in Spanish. With a lisp?

Off topic but, wow, I really like Rachel Maddow.

why are children and grand children of Italians with out papers so hypocritical?

Tancredo and Giuliani......... jeez

After two and three generations, everyone ends up speeking English anyway.

Bu but in the same time, the GOP caters to the anti-Castro Cubans in South Florida. The eternal sanctions against Cuba has lasted over 50 years to win anti-Castro votes in South-Florida.

Double standards between Cuban-Americans and Mexican-Americans

the english only guy at the cheese steak place in Philly that endorsed the cousin diddler's going to be pissed

The language issue, previously murmured in some circles reached a deafening pitch in recent years. Most immigrants do learn to speak English, however it makes no sense to force people to speak English, or require them to speak in most cases. i grew up on military bases, and many of my friends mother's (born and married) overseas did not speak English, or spoke very little. Their children were fluent in at least two languages. My (step)mother's experience as an Italian-American was that her grandmother spoke Italian, (ran a family business, paid taxes, contributed to their church and community) her children were bi-lingual, but alas the Italian language was lost to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The complete annihilation of linguistic ties to their cousins in Italy has resulted in a loss of relations with what could have been extended family. This is true for most of Americans.

The ideas that a particular language can convey generally do not strictly translate. Words convey hints of tradition or heritage, and may have many meanings that do not have a place in the English language. To homogenize language to a strictly English-language only mindset is to kill off ideas and sever bonds to familial roots.

To speak English does not indicate a full understanding of English of it's linguistic properties. To force someone to testify, sign a statement, or say an oath in English does not necessarily guarantee a full understanding of the implications, which may be lost in translation, renduring the obligation null and void, or worse, important testiminony may be lost.

€Punk @ 14:

Is it 9/11 in spanish or 11/9?

it is 11/9. You clearly haven't read 'Learning Spanish with Rudy'. The date format and 'mistress' are the only entries.

Guiliani's a joke, but now he's our national joke..

one wouldn't think Dubya could be topped for WORST PRESIDENT EVER
but dontcha know it, Rudy just might be the one to pull that off.

fortunately (thanks to Dubya & Rove) Republicans won't be electable to
any office higher than that of dogcatcher, for several election cycles.

Ay ay ay! Las naranjas se caen en mi cabeza!

No me gusta!

umm, el hipocritico?

Like I tell my 'friends' that make such a big deal out of this language (official or otherwise) thing...'I don't want these folks speaking English cause if I can't understand what names they're calling me, I don't want them to understand what I'm calling them.'

I am no fan of Nine-Eleven-Man, he wants to be a dictator, but this criticism is illogical. Why? Because it doesn't show hypocrisy at all. What I find hilarious is how desperate these political attacks are getting.

What he is saying about immigrants being able to speak and write English applies to the future, supposedly after he becomes President: he will probably start a program of some sort to edumucate these Spanish-speaking people. Today however, these immigrants do not speak English, they still speak Spanish, therefore they must be spoken to in Spanish TODAY.

This criticism is unwarranted and stupid. For example, it's exactly like saying this, which Paul is for:

"I will get rid of the income tax if I am elected."

Now, does the fact that he, along with the supporters, still pays income tax today mean that he is a hypocrite? If you think Rudy is a hypocrite, then you must also think Paul is a hypocrite.

Many other examples can be used, but essentially it boils down to knowing the difference between today and the future and acting accordingly. What would have been the supposedly non-hypocritical thing to do if a candidate wants out of Iraq? According to Maddows' logic, it would be to think to themselves, speak and act in a way that implies that the soldiers are already home today!!! Of course this makes no sense, because there is a difference between the reality of today and the expectations of the future.

Listen, I hate Rudy as much as the next person, but this criticism is weak weak weak....

Dear America, Go ahead and consider this evil mother fucker. The fact that the Repubs would ban Ron Paul (another crazy fucker, but not as evil) and let this fool represent their party is telling.

Make that international joke. They're laughing at him all over the world.

When California became a state in 1850, two years after it was stolen from Mexico and one year after the gold rush (coincidence you say?), the first California State Constitution adopted both English and Spanish as official languages. To my knowledge, it is the only state constitution that has designated an official language and though it is no longer in effect, here in California it would be difficult to impose English as a sole official tongue.

The English as an official language debate is hard to figure really. As an immigrant myself and for whom English is my third language, I certainly appreciate the fact that English has served me well but I also know that many people in this country do quite well never mastering English. But my big argument against English as an official language is what sort of message does it send the people of Puerto Rico if English is made the sole official language of the United States. Does Puerto Rico's language (they say it is Spanish but I beg to differ, only Dominicans speak poorer Spanish) preclude it from statehood?

In Spain, we have five languages spoken at least two million people each. Castillian the major language of course with some 35 million speakers; Catalan some six million; Gallego, and Basque four million apiece; and Valenciano two million. And then we have pockets of Aragonese and Portuguese speakers that number in the tens of thousands. While Spain had language difficulties until 1980s, clearly now we do not see language as a source of national disunity. Many tongues does not a nation unmake.

How do you think a Spanish-speaking person would feel if...

He or she saw an ad featuring Rudy (or any other candidate) telling you to vote for him in Spanish
Thought, "Hey, this guy reaches me. He understands how tough it can be to communicate in Spanish here and he's reaching out. Nice!"
And then finds out that Rudy will demand English as the official language of the USA if he is elected.

The criticism seems rather strong to me. Rudy screwed the pooch on this one.

El Mejor del Americas.

I didn't hear him say 9/11 (or 11/9) in the ad. Are you sure that was Rudy?

I know most readers hear don’t like to read anything that doesn’t toe the line of Democratic ideology, but…

I think that, to a point Rudy’s idea makes sense. My father was a Hungarian immigrant so obviously I am not anti-immigrant in my thinking. I would modify Rudy’s language rule to only include immigrants who enter the work force or public schools (and yes I realize that most do). Older, retired, pre-school children, or disabled family members of immigrants should be exempt. The language rule should in no way be a barrier to entering the country, but to gain citizenship I think that the ability to understand and speak the English language should be required (except in exceptions previously noted).

However, having just recently moved from northern Ohio to The South, and after listening to GW Bush for the past 7 years, I also understand that speaking and understanding American English can be quite difficult, even among us natives – so the bar for a “language test” would have to be set pretty low and the time period required for learning should be adequate (5 years maybe?).

Without this requirement we are basically promoting the decline of the (unofficial) native language of America. We don’t need another Canada, where in certain parts of the country you can’t even ask directions because you don’t speak or understand French.

As for Dan Abrams – I generally like him and his show, but his “Beat The Press” segment is usually nothing but nitpicking. You can tell the guy is a lawyer by the fact that he thinks he can find a “gotcha” moment in most anything anyone says.

Rudy speak with forked tongue.

El Nueve Once

That's not quite obvious. My grandfather was 1/4 Cherokee and was openly racist when it came to American Indians.

I agree that Gulianni is a hypocrite like the other politicians who spout the same crap, and then put there website in Spanish. But not German or Italian or Japanese or Chinese. It is because they know that there is a large section of the population that speaks Spanish whether born here or not legal or not. And in the rest of the World for that matter Spanish is spoken in more countries than any other language.

The problem though is that what he is saying is no different than what the law already is. So what is the controversy? In order to become a naturalized citizen you must speak read and write at least some English (somewhat conversational). To be a legal resident you don't. Most of the immigrants don't want to be citizens and won't ever vote so this is really a red herring to attack the immigrants. Unless they are proposing that all immigrants must speak, read and write English.

Gulianni is just being his conman self. He wants the rabid dogs to think he is anti-immigrant, but in reality he didn't say anything that is new or different from the already existing requirements for citizenship.

Please tell me this was satire. The man says all immigrants must speak, read and write English in order to obtain citizenship, then turns around and panders to non-english speaking people in FL by airing an ad in Spanish to get their votes. If you were actually trying to be serious, this is some of the most twisted and tortured logic I've seen in a long time.

Adios, oh sorry, Bu-Bye.

¡Rudy Giuliani esta mucho grande asshole!

I think this is a useless and unimportant topic. How else are you going to tell millions of spanish only speaking people that they must learn to read and write in english to become a citizen of the US. I really do not have a problem with this. Since most of these people only speak Spanish, how would an english ad even address those people. It won't.

I really do not like Juliani at all, but this is just shamefull nitpicking from the left.

While what you say may be true, why deny us any fun when the right does the same thing with issues as $400.00 haircuts, cleavage, pant suits, etc. The right stops at nothing to try to diminish candidates on the left and while we should be above the fray, at some point you have to say 'Okay fucker, what's your plan'. When that plan is largely hypocritical then I see that as a reason to call them on it.

Most people in Europe are multi-lingual. People in Belgium are taught four languages during high school. Many countries that are smaller are quite used to hearing and speaking at least a second or third language.

Although I do agree immigrants need to make an effort to learn their new countries language, Americans should not be so offended to hear Spanish spoken, and should also make an effort to learn it themselves.

As usual, Rudy's full of crap. The next time you have a meeting with him, don't try English.
Rudy don't understand English.

Ya gotta speak dumb to Rudy. Rudy understands dumb. And he speaks dumb.

Not very fluently, but if you listen hard, you get the gist.

As far as shameful nit picking from the left, it was the right that fanned the flames of this immigration issue. Immigration is not that big of a deal but its being made out to be the issue of our time.

WE ARE AT WAR and it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS!

That's our priority, getting out.

I had a meeting with Bush today. Well, not exactly a meeting, but he spoke to me.

At first he just talked about general things, like 'How ya doon?'. What people say is true, he's affable. Affable, but stupid.

Then he talked about democrats. He don't like democrats. Then he talked about Iran. He don't like Iran. Then he talked about Muslims. He don't like Muslims.

Then he got angry. He started shouting. Things like 'SMITE THE IRAQIS!'. 'SMITE THE IRANIANS!'. 'SMITE THE ISLAMOFASCISTS!'. 'SMITE THE DEMOCRATS!'.

Whoa, I said, 'Smite the Democrats?'

And then he took of on a tear. It was 'SMITE THIS, AND SMITE THAT, AND BURN IN HELL', and so on. Boy, was he pissed.

And then I realized. Bush wasn't talking to me.

It was the CrazyChristianEvangelicalFundamentalistRapturist GOD.

Drew @ 27:

THAT is where Rudy needs to be chastised. I agree with you totally. But that is not what is being "laughed at" here. Instead of focusing on just that, that NOBODY should make the decision on what languages others need to speak, instead what is being focused on is the mere fact that he said he wants to make Spanish speaking people speak English while campaigning in Spanish. What is being focused on is an alleged contradiction. Forget about the ad in Spanish. We should focus on the fact that he thinks Spanish speaking people should speak English! If that is what he wants, and he does it without taxpayer money, I have no problems with that view. But Rudy is a socialist-neo-con, and he will not hesitate to spend Spanish people's money so that they will speak English. ALl Rudy is doing is catering to the hick, racist, banjo-playing sub-strata of our population who hates anything not country and not war-related.

I love this country – I am an American and I am a patriot.
I love the constitution because of what it does and what it stands for – but –

If you came from another country to make your home in this country and you don’t learn the language of this land – ENGLISH – shame on you.
I refuse to learn your language – I don’t have to.
Just because you are in this country you don’t deserve a thin dime of my taxpayer dollar.
My rights cost dearly (earned by sacrifices made in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korean “Police Action” War, Viet Nam “Conflict”, Iraq – and because of this you and your family have not earned the right to free medical care, free/low cost housing, welfare, free education, free lunches in school, and many other freedoms, so go back home. I happen to know that the same road that brought you here will take you back to your country.
I will never apologize for believing in God and Jesus Christ.
I will not apologize if someone becomes offended because I will never embrace his or her religion.
I believe in the American way and as long as you are here, you should too. If not, go back where you came from.

Oh – if you can’t speak the language, you can’t read it or write it.
Well, so much for that!

How is 'hard fought, dearly won, but you don't get any, get lost' doing honor to the soldiers who have fought in any of this country's wars?

Your reasoning would mean that people who were not of an age to pick up a rifle during any of the major conflicts in this country, or otherwise barred from service due to physical disability, aren't entitled to any privileges. It also sounds like you think the armed forces consist entirely of cookie-cutter patriots.

What does Giuliani's stance on speaking English have to do with God and Christ Jesus?

What does respect to others have to do with your beliefs? Is your faith so narrow and miniscule that the mere presence of a non-Christian is a threat that you feel you must ardently, stridently defend against it?

Incidentally, my grandfather (maternal) died in an uprising in China because the law said he couldn't emigrate to this country. My great-grandmother (paternal) had bound feet (a nicety imposed upon young women in Imperialist China). You're telling me that soldiers have fought and died in wars only to protect some narrow, English-speaking, Christian demographic, and not provide a destination to which immigrants aspiring to live in a free society can travel to?

Oh, yes. My family also includes an uncle who was recognized for valor in World War II, while my father served during the Korean War. So shut your festering gob - my family has worked hard and earned the privileges of being American, and I'll defend the right of immigrants to come here and do the same.

Hey Rain, not gonna quote your remarks because they've already been deleted.

But a lot of evangelical nutcases seem to believe the country was founded on one belief in God. This is (shocking, I know) incorrect. It was founded, in part, on believing in TOLERANCE for differing beliefs. Many people IMMIGRATED to this country seeking refuge away from their neighbors who spoke the kind of BS found in your comments.

Interesting...

I read an article citing the missteps of the candidates. Oddly enough, Barack Obama was nowhere on the list. Hmmm, Guess he is the Second Coming (or the MSM wants him).

Whoa, I said, 'Smite the Democrats?'

And then he took of on a tear. It was 'SMITE THIS, AND SMITE THAT, AND BURN IN HELL', and so on. Boy, was he pissed.

Belgium seems to be a bit close to breaking up along linguistic borders so they are a good example for what happens without a common language to keep a country together. The former Yugoslavia is another good example. There's been a lot of trouble in Kenya too along ethnic/linguistic lines.

There are some examples of people who speak the same language declaring independence or autonomy but it seems to happen more often with those people who don't have a common language.

This blog post is pure win.

When all native-born Americans (starting with our President) speak English, then we can worry about immigrants.

I've been lurking at C & L for many months now (I love this place), and I figure this thread is as good a time as any to come out and say something finally. :)

Well, if this doesn't smack of hypocracy, I don't know what does!

I remember reading a comment from a (Republican) Cuban-American at Tancredo Watch, in which he said that he was gravely concerned that this is the direction that the Republican party is headed in, and that he was considering defecting to Team Obama. I hope he makes good on that threat.

As for me, a 6th generation Mexican-American (w/ an ancestor born and raised in Texas before it was annexed to the U.S., and the rest arriving before 1880), it will be a cold day in hell before I ever vote for a Republican. And actually, I don't know if anyone saw the Zogby poll from the 2006 election, but the Latinos who vote Republican tend to be 1st generation; new immigrants themselves, or the children of immigrants; most likely because of the Rethugs trumpting themselves as the party of family values (meanwhile, Billo openly questions if the newcomers share "our" values). By the 3rd and 4th generations a family has been in the U.S., the chances of the Rethugs getting a vote from that family have been seriously diminished.

On the one hand, I am just as American as everyone else, even with Cherokee ancestors and Revolutionary War vets on my other side of the family, but on the other, when these talking heads and idiots open their traps, sometimes I feel as although I just crossed the border five minutes ago. Lord knows some of them are moronic enough to see me that way.

To be honest, as someone who grew up poor, the descendant of migrant farm workers on both sides of the family, having known many many people who were of dubious documentation, I would much rather associate with them than these un-American Rethugs and talking heads!

I apologize for the length of this rant, but I've been holding it in a bit, I must confess...

P.S. - I also believe that MSNBC needs to give Rachel Maddow a show of her own ASAP! ;)

Um, I could be mistaken and it's changed over the past few decades, but when I was a kid, the French-Canadian parents of classmates decided to become US citizens, and it was required that they be able to pass an English examination. The mother spoke only English for about six months, in order to learn, passed her test, got her US citizenship, and never spoke a word of English thereafter. The kids grew up completely bilingual, which pissed me off because they didn't have to work at their foreign language required courses in high school (something else that seems to have changed over the past few decades as well).

Rudy is a hypocrit, there's no argument there. And far too many immigrant children end up losing their native language because of the pressure to Anglocize. But it is a disservice to children going through school systems where English is relegated to 'optional', when they come out the other end not being able to compete on a level playing field in universities or the work place because their English is so poor.

Yes, English should be a mandatory requirement for gaining US citizenship. And it should also be mandatory for ALL kids in US public schools to take at least two years of a foreign language. If not more.

And I'm a liberal. Go figure.

I would like to see what's Giuliani's justification , however, being the ad aired in Florida then it is probably aimed to Cuban-Americans who, guess what, like to vote republican.

Of course the washed-up mobster is sucking up to the Cuban-Americans in SoFla. (Why this group largely continues to believe a Rethugliconn will one day overthrow Fidel and return them their land is beyond me, but...) That ad will only run on Univision and Telemundo daily at 9:11 (AM and PM)...

Since the only other guaranteed Ghouliani voting block is the SoFla-based, Yew Nork old-white guys club: fellow mob washouts, over-the-hill witness-protection hideaways, and rich snowbirds, down to do their Winter voting...(Watch for those last two groups to vote for him both on Jan 29 AND Feb 5...)

Of course, since the two groups live practically non-intersecting lifestyles here (their frequent car crashes notwithstanding), Rudy will suffer no blowback from the ads. The old-fart whites will never see Telemundo or Univision (or learn any Spanish) before their deaths; the rabid Cuban-Rethugs are praying that Rudy will storm Havana on 9/11/08 to take it back from Castro "the terrorists"...

As Jim Defede used to say, "Gotta love South Florida..."

Hell, I'd be happy if more kids in US schools learned any English worth a damn these days, whether it's their second language or their only language. One need only listen to the current Fool-in-Chief to hear the failure.

On the other hand, one only has to listen to the way that Obama captivates crowds through his mastery of English to remind us that we are not only a country of actions, but of words. While I'm still basically an old cynical hippie (suspicious of 'em all-- well-spoken or Shrubby), watching and hearing Obama inspire so many young people gives me renewed hope for our country. Would his policies and experience be sufficient to turn us around? Hard to know, but having the ability to sooth, persuade, and inspire through mastery of speech are oft overlooked qualities of a good leader these days.

Undoubtedly, we as a nation will need from our leaders more than another fumbled reading of "My Pet Goat" during a crisis or the bastardization of "Mission Accomplished" while "illegal occupation" was too difficult to acknowledge and defend. Hopefully, it's not all over but the shouting...

Good. I think a background check should be run on every person inside Americas borders. Send the illegals back.
