Whoops! FBI Wiretaps Dropped Due To Unpaid Bills

Just another example of Bush's rampant deficit spending. Fiscal conservatives, indeed.

In all seriousness, although not stated explicitly, these wiretaps all appear to be in this country--I'm curious to know whether these cases followed the FISA guidelines and what justifications they had to tap. Of course the FBI would never release the information, but it would be interesting to know.

UPDATE: The ACLU wants to know how much national security has been jeopardized because the FBI can't manage their checkbook

This evodence will really help in the upcoming impeachments.

The good news is that the incompetence of the Bush Administration may be its saving grace. The bad news is that we'll never know.

I wouldn't take a check from the FBI either.

Kiters.

This administration is truly a Mongolian Clusterfuck of Epic Proportions!

It's no doubt Clinton's fault.

Hey the media is actually starting to do their job.

Economy Strong!

i.... i just....

the news headlines are starting to read more and more like the onion~

of course, with stories like 'halliburton gases US troops', they aren't necessarily funny like the onion

I thought they got paid to tap our arses.

only under the bush admin (fingers crossed) would we have a situation where an illegal domestic spying program, run by the govt, is unable to continue b/c it won't pay the bills and it is just another news story...

outrage fatigue

According to one story I read... only one case had to do with FISA.

It's more or less the fault of the FBI's inability to keep track of their own funds and bills.

If this is the case, then how can we expect them to "follow the money" for organized crime or other criminal operations?

Let's bring these boys down. I think its high time we did. Enough is enough.

You really just have to laugh. They are using this to catch terra-ists, but forgot to pay the bill and were shut-off. Clearly this is keeping us safe as the Great Leader has claimed, should they pay on time, of course.

Puts a big hole in the 'we need immunity because we allowed the government to spy on you out of patriotic duty' argument. Let's fine them whatever they got paid to sell us down the river.

Life imitates art imitating life.

The Wire, Season 2, Episode 21

Sobotka, at the union hall, becomes suspicious when he calls his wireless carrier to reassure them that his overdue cell phone bill will soon be paid. He learns from the customer service rep that his account has been "flagged," meaning "Do not disconnect for non-payment." Horseface suggests that he's "been touched by an angel."

Do you mean we're paying to be spied upon?

Ditto that Powkat. The phone companies aren't breaking the law because they are committed patriots. They are breaking the law because they are paid to. That makes them as patriotic as the mafia.

if only the telecoms cared about the Constitution as they do about the greenbacks

Let me see. Our nations infrastructure is literally crumbling away, because all the money goes to the WarPigs bloody circus in Iraq. Wounded veterans are not getting the proper care because the WarPig cuts funding so he can pay for the bloody circus and make more wounded veterans who won't get cared for. There is also that extra money he gave to Israel on top of their regular yearly income. Looks like what goes around comes around. Guess it's time to print some more money, what the hell? The economy is going to bottom out any way. Might as well make it a crash the world will talk about for decades.

MADMAX @ 18:

Do you mean we're paying to be spied upon?

The irony is astounding. Though many peace peoples, pacifists, vegans pay taxes that go mostly military and weapons. Even WMD's. Yes we pay for those too.

MADMAX @ 18:

Do you mean we're paying to be spied upon?

Well, apparently we should be paying, but didn't. Turns out we are deadbeats when it comes to spying on ourselves.

that's too funny...remember all the BS about the grown-ups are taking over the White House and all that? I guess these grown-ups don't pay their bills. Well, to be fair, they have always had a Daddy to pay their bills.

This is the funniest thing that the Bush Administration has ever done. I mean, how do you make this kind of mistake? How much a fucking imbecile do you have to be to forget to pay the fucking phone bill to make sure that your fucking wiretaps are fucking working? Why don't people who are this fucking retarded ever get fired or demoted or even sharply criticized by their superiors? How the hell did the federal government get so inept so fast?

Am i to believe that the same telcoms that were so quick to submit to illegal wiretap request while professing a concern for the safety of the american homeland are now upset about a buck or two?

If you're not on the FBI's friends and family's list and save on your long distance calls then the terrorists win.

So, let's see ... 'Telecom Amnesty' got stalled, and suddenly, the government's phone bills are overdue on these wiretaps ...

Maybe MoveOn could get a drive going to pick up the slack in the FBI's budget.

Geez, if the can't pay their phone bill, I wonder if they have toilet tissue in their crappers?

How low we have sunk under the Preposterous Putz.

I don't know about you guys, but I feel safer already. :-)

Tax money SAVED,,,,and my phone is not being tapped....sound like a good deal to me.

Those hypocrites at the Telephone Companies claimed they were being patriotic, now we know only if they got paid. Sounds like a bunch of Repugnicants to me. Besides, after GW gets done bankrupting the US, there will be no $$ left to buy bullets to fight terrorism or invade any other nation.

What do you expect?

It's America, where it's always about the money.

So much for the argument that the telecoms who colluded with this administration's illegal wiretapping deserve amnesty for breaking the law.
Amnesty might--might--be justifiable, or at least defensible, with an argument of patriotism and service to country.
Can't make that argument now. They're clearly accessories to the crime, and this news clearly illustrates their motivation.
Rock on, Senator Dodd!

.

Think Bush will take 'em to court to get re-tapped in?

.

L.A. Confidential @ 7:

Economy Strong!

Shrub Administration Greed and Incompetence Stronger!!

(with my apologies to Harry Belafonte...)

Hmmm...wouldn't it be funny if the CONGRESS did the same thing as the telecoms?

Cut off the damn money and see what happens?

Never mind.....
