I;m going to repeat this because it needs repeating:

Dear C&L,
Please don’t put out articles that say things like:
“The reality is that Democratic voters are turning out nearly 2 to 1 over Republicans consistently this primary season and the outlook for the GOP for November is bleak at best.”
We don’t want any complacency to spread amongst our voters. This race will be a struggle. We haven’t even seen the beginning of the smear machine yet. Wait until the Rove lies start to fly.
Yes, American voters are showing up 2 to 1 Democrats at the polls, but this is first, just the primaries and second we are a year away from the general election.
A Complacent Democratic Public is the last thing we need.

In other words … “America — STAY AWAKE !!!”

Mike,
I'm glad to see Make Them Accountable on your Blog Roundup. Carolyn Kay provides an important service for which she gets very little credit.
Thanks for everything you do.

Unless you live under a rock, you already know that world markets have collapsed.

Better check up on your 401'ks.

They might not be there.

See you later.

The huge 3/4 percent rate cut by the Fed is a real shocker; taken with the haste to get a "stimulus" package out it really make me wonder but that a very serious downturn is in the offing. However, in the long run what we really need to do is to fundamentally rework our economy so that it working for the average person; Bob Herbert at the NY Times has an interesting column on just that.

“debunking myths perpetuated by dishonest Republican ‘economists’ and politicians”

this is a topic that should be mentioned every single day. the supply-siders, the neoliberals, the market fundamentalists, the “free” market believers, and the reagonomicons lie and distort without being challenged in the MSM.

their economic policies–see, reverse-robin-hood–have dominated since the 80s. we all know the result: things have gotten worse. oh yeah, the economy has “grown”, we are more productive, we have “increased wealth”… but that is for a very small few. the vast, vast, vast majority of people are worse off now, and will be even worse as long as we let these charlatans lie to us openly without being challenged.

you see, we were told that if we followed the neoliberal economic formula that, in time, we would all be better off. more jobs, better paying jobs, etc. how has that worked out?

our economy is dependent on a couple of things:
1) war and conflict
2) financialization

this is not a solid footing for an economy.

this is not the legacy the economic experts, the chicago boys, the supply-siders, the market fundamentalists, the ceos, the cnbc models, etc. promised. we adhered to their dictates and demands, we created a welfare state for corporations, we favored the rich, we “liberalized” the economy, and this is the result. the so-called economic experts are just about as credible as the pre-OIL (operation iraqi liberation) prognosticators. where are the people greeting me with flowers?

I have for years not been able to rap my head around the idea that the Repukes really believe any of the crap that comes spewing out of their mouths. I really don't think they do. They do believe that they believe there will always be winners and losers in society and they will always be the winners. Any attempt to help the losers is fruitless and just steals money from the winners. They also believe with all their black hearts that the end always justifies the means. Any lies that promote their agenda and view of the world perfectly OK and the other side does the same thing. If everyone lies about the facts then its OK to make shit up to fit the facts to the policy.

Broker site crashes as stocks lose 7 per cent
NEWS.com.au, Australia

THE website of Australia's largest online share broker, CommSec, crashed today as investors traded feverishly in a plummeting market.

Well. We knew it was coming didn't we?

I know this isn't an "open" thread, but some of you might want to take a look at this article:

If things get bad enough, NATO figures that it will be best to start launching preemptive nuclear strikes. Apparently, the world that our leaders have worked so hard to create is now exceeding their management potential. And while this is just a policy paper at the moment, we can all rest assured that the Bush administration will back the idea as it fits very nicely with their Iranian plans...

Good analogy. These guys are tough to argue with. I think the majority of us fail to understand the complexity of these people's absurdness and capacity for criminal unethical behavior.

I have been expecting all along that the illegal consortium of private banks known as the Federal Reserve would dump a few billion dollars into the stock market and keep it propped up on ever increasingly spindly legs.

Funny how the busch family perpetuated and exacerbated the thing pappy busch called "VOODOO ECONOMICS"!!!! THEY KNEW IT WAS BULLSHIT. The pundits knew it was bullshit when they came up with "IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!" and then supported Clinton. But now that the corporatists are in control of the media, lock, stock and barrel, they ignore everything factual and ask the 'financial experts' why they are trying to scare america by mentioning '(R)ecession'. GO FIGURE!

how about:

Money money money money, money [x6]
Some people got to have it
Some people really need it
Listen to me y'all, do things, do things, do bad things with it
You wanna do things, do things, do things, good things with it
Talk about cash money, money
Talk about cash money- dollar bills, yall

For the love of money
People will steal from their mother
For the love of money
People will rob their own brother
For the love of money
People can't even walk the street
Because they never know who in the world they're gonna beat
For that lean, mean, mean green

Almighty dollar, money

For the love of money
People will lie, Lord, they will cheat
For the love of money
People don't care who they hurt or beat
For the love of money
A woman will sell her precious body
For a small piece of paper it carries a lot of weight
Call it lean, mean, mean green

Almighty dollar

I know money is the root of all evil
Do funny things to some people
Give me a nickel, brother can you spare a dime
Money can drive some people out of their minds

Got to have it, I really need it
How many things have I heard you say
Some people really need it
How many things have I heard you say
Got to have it, I really need it
How many things have I heard you say
Lay down, lay down, a woman will lay down
For the love of money
All for the love of money

Don't let, don't let, don't let money rule you
For the love of money
Money can change people sometimes

Don't let, don't let, don't let money fool you
Money can fool people sometimes
People! Don't let money, dont let money change you,

it will keep on changing, changing up your mind.

I have to thank king george et al for the collaspe in the us housing market. It is even affecting us here in British Columbia. The comapny that runs the 2 mills in our town has annouced the shutdown of those two mills as soon as the log supply for this season is done. The major reason given is the low US Dollar and the collaspe of the housing market in the US.
Thanks George for telling people to go out and spend.

O.T. I sent this to Elizabeth earlier.

Elizabeth, again the media almost totally ignores John. In all of the debates it is like he is a halogram, he's there then he's not. The media is keeping him from reaching the people and delivering his message. I sent this message to John the other day and I want to make sure he gets it.

I think you need to go to the progresiive radio advertising. The regular MSM is not going to cover you and financing that kind of advertising will use up your campaign funds. As the Rueters article pointed out, they are afraid of you John. On progressive radio, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann and others have given you more airtime than any of the MSM. I think you will benefit much more by reaching more of the progressive voter without the negative and dismissive attitude the MSM has given you.
We love your ideas John and the corporate media does not.

National Campaign Manager, John Edwards for President January 21, 2008

January 20, 2008

The Honorable John R. Edwards
410 Market Street
Suite 400
Chapel Hill, NC 27516

Dear Senator Edwards:

It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.

There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father's legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.

I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are - a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.

You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don't have lobbyists in Washington and they don't get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.

I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.

From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.

I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.

Sincerely,

Martin L. King, III

Interesting article, however I have some personal thoughts on the whole thing and here they are.
1. People in your country have spent the equity in their homes to make up for the lack of wages. I'm not saying we haven't done it in Canada either but it's a bigger problem in the US
2. When in doubt pull out the plastic, too many people have pulled out the plastic to pay for things they don't need. I remember king george telling people to go out and spend"it's good for the economy"
3. You fed dropped the rate.75% today in effort to pump up the economy. Ok I ask this, if the idea was to pump up the economy and more borrowing occurs and wages still suck, and the housing market is still in the tank. Where will the cash come from?
You can only build a house of cards for so long before it won't go any higher

additionally, the rush by banks to foreign investors will hasten the drain of wealth from the US economy and the lower interest rates will makev loaning america any money a poorer investment. the trillions of dollars drained from the economy and the people of the US and funneled to the already wealthiest people will continue to transform this country into the charles dickens world envisioned by prescott busch and henry ford back in the days they supported the fascist slave state, Nazi Germany.

another story that has gotten woefully unreported here in kentucky.

senator addison got a veteran single-by-way-of-war mother of two fired from her job as exec. director of the maiden alley cinema in paducah, a place that was used for the desparate toothless neckless senator was using for a political commercial, for daring to ask him about the iraq war. her 12 year old daughter had the audacity to ask the senator "why do you want my dad to die (in iraq)?" (he's active duty navy stationed overseas now) how did he get her fired? by threatening to take away the porkERRRRRRRRRRRRRRfederal dollars that far western kentucky (and that the theatre uses) needs to survive. read more at bluegrassroots.org.

note for sitemons, i have no connections to bluegrassroots other that it's a kentucky progressive blog and i am a kentucky progressive. i just think that this is news that needs to be reported and hasn't gotten coverage it deserves.
