Tough Times at FOX News High

CNN is picking up a lot of viewers during this primary season for a lot of reasons as Eric explains:

Bottom line is that Fox News is in for a very rough 2008. And the umbrella reason for that is quite simple: Eight years ago the all-news cable channel went all-in on the presidency of George Bush and became a broadcast partner with the White House...read on

I'm not sure that CNN, as it is now, out pacing Fox is that great of news. In a way, CNN is more problematic as their right wing bias is less overt. Choosing Glenn Beck over Bill O'Reilly and Wolf Blitzer over Brit Hume is no great triumph of journalism over corporate right wing propaganda.

Hey Right One

The US media is largely owned by 10 corporations who frequently push pro-conservative agendas to the American public.

Even Republican Pat Buchanan confessed, "For heaven sakes, we kid about the liberal media, but every Republican on earth does that." Neo-conservative pundit Bill Kristol also said, "I admit it: the liberal media were never that powerful, and the whole thing was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures."

A 2005 study in the Quarterly Journal of Economics found that "coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media." Why? Partly because only four major corporate networks control American TV news-- up to 75% of the audience share. The "Big 10" media conglomerates who control the bulk of the entire US media are: AOL Time Warner, Disney, General Electric, News Corporation, Viacom, Vivendi, Sony, Bertelsmann, AT&T and Liberty Media. Yes, we have National Public Radio, but compare its public reach to that of Canada's CBC and the United Kingdom's BBC.

Eighty percent of all US newspapers are owned by corporate chains.

Liberals are virtually non-existent on talk radio stations nationwide. Not because they aren't popular- Democracy Now! is the most listened to radio program on public radio. Corporate owned media won't air content that is critical of corporations.

Conservatives are very well accomodated for across FOX News, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times, the New York Post, the American Spectator, the Weekly Standard, the Drudge Report, the National Review, etc. Even so-called "bastions of liberalism," e.g. the NY Times, MSNBC, WashPost and NPR make a concerted effort to be "fair and balanced" by bringing in right-wing views like those of David Brooks, Joe Scarborough, Tucker Carlson, Charles Krauthammer and Cokie Roberts to have their say in these forums, respectively. This is in stark contrast to FOX News' claims to unbiased objectivity, which were easily demolished by Robert Greenwald in 2004.

Contrary to what some paranoid Republicans claim, most journalists are centrists, not liberals. A representative sample of 141 US journalists and bureau chiefs were asked in 1998, "On social issues, how would you characterize your political orientation?" Answers: Left 30%, Center 57%, Right 9%, Other 5% . Next question, same sample: "On economic issues, how would you characterize your political orientation? " Answers: Left 11%, Center 64%, Right 19%, Other 5%. Also, look at the total number of think tank citations in major newspapers, radio and TV transcripts: Conservative TTs: 7792, Centrist TTs: 6361, Liberal TTs: 1152.

Eric Alterman summarizes a 1999 research study from the academic journal Communications Research: "Four scholars examined the use of the 'liberal media' argument and discovered a fourfold increase in the number of Americans telling pollsters that they discerned a liberal bias in their news. But a review of the media's actual ideological content, collected and coded over a twelve-year period, offered no corroboration whatever for this view."

The Liberal Media is a myth. It does not exist. People who say it does know this.

It is nice to hear that viewers of Fox are finally wising up even though it took them long enough. They might get more objective coverage of the republicans at CNN but they won't get fair coverage of the democratic race. Since I don't vote and can't support anyone, I can say from my Canadian perspective that CNN is so biased in favour of Obama and anti Hillary that it is a crime to say the least. Commentators are mostly pro Obama in their discussions yet the three that everyone knows supports Hillary have been banned for now. However there are 2 black spokesmen that should never hit the airwaves for a while either if that is the criteria. I watch CNN constantly and am very disappointed with the one sided and biased coverage.

Huckabee was the only GOP candidate that I actually thought was cool guy to listen to when he went on talks shows.

The Radio Talk show host, Fox News and the Right Wing pundits were not amused that Mike Huckabee gained is early January momentum that captured the social conservative side of the Right for himself.

Fox News bringing down Huckabee and constantly bashing him caused many social conservative viewers to question the validity of their own favorite news outlet.

If you really think that Fox is "done" because of anything they've done in the past then you haven't learned ANYTHING over the last 7 years. Fox will reinvent itself whenever needed to stay financially viable, and most of the public will quickly forget their past behavior.

Fox News may be infested with war-mongering psychopathic authoritarians who believe in disinformation and partisan distortion, but they are all driven, first and foremost by caaaash money.

Those of you who think they will stay rigidly attached to their truly preferred political positions at the expense of ratings and money over an extended period of time will be proven wrong. POLL: Time For Us To Label Fox?
by Cenk Uygur
Tue Jul 24, 2007 at 07:24:15 PM PDT
Fox calls itself a "news" channel. They labels themselves "fair and balanced."
But tonight, as CrooksandLiars.com shows, Fox continued to smear Daily Kos without shame, calling it a hate site akin to David Duke. After the 2006 elections, Fox reported without an iota of proof that terrorists were cheering for the Democrats. And we all know that Fox reported Barack Obama was schooled in a madrassa. The examples of propaganda go on and on to the point that it becomes maddeningly obvious that the labels Fox gives itself don’t fit.
• Cenk Uygur's diary :: ::

Simply put, Fox is a Republican mouthpiece masquerading as fair and balanced news outlet. Even their so-called news anchors and reporters are thoroughly opinionated, slanted, and biased.
I will defend Fox’s right to exist to my dying breath. As much as I loathe their programming, I think it is important for a democracy to respect the freedom of speech and encourage different voices. But a little truth in advertising is also essential.
We label our food products, so you know what you’re eating. We label our movies, so you have a sense of their content. Even the Word Wrestling Federation, after many years of pretending the fights were real, finally succumbed to reality and changed their name to World Wrestling Entertainment (a little lawsuit from the World Wildlife Foundation also helped to nudge them in that direction).
We must also honestly label television and radio programming so the public is not misled. The labels Fox gives itself intentionally deceive--so much that some in the news industry and political world still treat Fox as if they are a real news operation with actual journalists.
So enough is enough. If Fox won’t label themselves honestly, it’s time for progressives to start doing it for them. Below is a poll asking whether you think institutions like Yearly Kos, the Democratic National Convention, and Democratic presidential campaigns should fire a shot across the bow by making Fox walk around with "opinion media" credentials instead of the standard "media" credentials given to other media outlets.
There are a lot of other things we can do as well. Continuing to ensure Fox gets no Democratic debates, fact checking them, and holding them accountable for their lies. But as an opening salvo, we can give Fox a choice: If you want to attend Democratic or progressive events, you will do so as "opinion media." Short and sweet.
There’s nothing wrong with opinion media. I work for Air America and we are opinion media. Unlike Fox, we don’t pretend our anchors and hosts are newsmen with no opinion. We never try to deceive the audience into thinking they are receiving neutral news when we are giving our opinion. There is truth in advertising. If we call Fox "opinion media," everyone will be clear on the network’s actual role.
I believe an excellent place to start this process is the Yearly Kos convention. If one convention passes out badges labeling Fox as "opinion media" as opposed to news media, it will encourage others to take this logical step. Eventually, the Democratic presidential campaigns and the Democratic convention in 2008 will follow suit. If Fox resists, they will just bring attention to our point about who they are.
What do you think: Should we label Fox "opinion media"? Tell your opinion below.

I think that Fox news, Rush Limbaugh etc, will always be with us because of the demographic they reach: gullible morons. What purveyor of snake oil, high interest credit cards or penis enlargement pills wouldn't love an audience of morons with money?

Not just gullible morons... gullible, hateful, morons. Because that's the hook baby. Got a hate on for something? Let faux fan those flames for you with their fact free, brain-not-necessary, pre-packed crap.

That may be, but hate doesn't generally move pocket fisherman. All you need is dumb. Bill O proves that with his own personal line of merch, which, evidently, some schmucks are buying. Of course there is also that impulse that dumb asses all seem to share, the desire to flaunt their ignorance. What could be better than a BillO t-shirt or coffee cup?
