Clinton does not want to 'slow down our economy'

ABC News’ Jake Tapper has caused quite a stir with an item about a speech Bill Clinton delivered in Denver.

In a long, and interesting speech, he characterized what the U.S. and other industrialized nations need to do to combat global warming this way: “We just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.”

At a time that the nation is worried about a recession is that really the characterization his wife would want him making? “Slow down our economy”?

I don’t really think there’s much debate that, at least initially, a full commitment to reduce greenhouse gases would slow down the economy….So was this a moment of candor?

Actually, no, it’s a moment taken out of context in such a way as to change the meaning of the sentence.

Clinton said the opposite.

Switching to clean alternative sustainable energy will make our economy soar for 100 years.

The Machine is working full force to discredit the Clintons. Man oh man are the scared at the possibility of a win.

Hey guys, I don't want her to win, either. But the fact that you can't win with the facts on the table isn't endearing anyone to your cause or changing any minds.

Tapper's got some 'shame on you's' comin' his way from WJC if he doesn't go into full-time retract mode toot-sweet. Whether you agree with everything about Clinton or not, ya gotta love the way he calls 'bullshit' on the MSM sometimes...

well, clinton may not have said it, but he still is wrong.

you can't have economic development and sustainable ecology.

it's not possible.

population control is the only way to reduce our problems.

Hey, this is just the beginning. We have 9 more months of this to go.

Eight years of progress on global warming and advancing green energy have been wasted on this repugnant adeministration. The sooner the repugnants can be run out of town the better. Never again trust a repugnant with anything !

I'll betcha Tapper once said the words "...terrorist..." and "...good..." in the same article or TV appearance . By his Holy-Hollow standards , , ,

JAKE TAPPER SAYS TERRORISTS GOOD !

Even Stalkn' Malkn' called Tapper on the carpet for his factually handicapped "reporting".

It would be nice if just once, these aholes would tell the truth.

And if we don't hurry, our asses will be sore for the next hundred years. Bicycle seats and bus benches are hard, baby!

ABC needs Republicans to maintain the Presidency and win back Congress so they can push forwards their agenda of deregulation at the FCC.

Actually, more like 8 years and 9 months.

In the Clinton article, Jake Tapper wrote:

What?

Out of context? Context, schmontext, they're all direct quotes from the article.

You will never see Bill or Hillary Clinton or any other candidate who is running for POTUS say anything CLOSE to this to "Helicopter" Ben Bernanke!

There is only ONE person running for POTUS who understands our current economic condition and what we truly need to "fix" it. Is there a doctor in the House???!!!!

Setting aside the contextual framing of Clinton's statement for a moment,I don't think the idea of slowing down a super heated, greed driven system is entirely without merit. However nebulous or counter-productive the outcome might prove to be.

Clinton gleefully does exactly what the Bilderburg Group tells him to. He also adds his own Satanic touch to the whole mix to accellerate plans to destroy America.

When it crashes you'll know about it.
As things stand certain privileged pockets of the market are making out like bandits whilst ordinary folks are compelled to bend over and say "Ah".

I believe he was trying to say, :slow down the slumping economy: in other words, stop the fall of our economy into recession.

When we stop electing major oil company and big business leaders as our national leaders who's only interest is in making more money, our energy situation will improve.

More money will be spent on alternative resources. Bush may say he wants energy independence and alternative fuels, but he really wants big oil to make more money so he makes more.

Well that was my half brain thoughts.

"Jake Tapper has caused quite a stir"

That Jake, he's a real swizzle-stick.

Tapper would have cut off the first 6 words of Jesus' saying "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" and turned an admonition into a command to commence firing.

Tapper's blog is one of the few places I've ever had a comment deleted. They've deleted several critical comments on this matter.

How can you slow down something that is hardly moving?

It's interesting to observe the propagandists in the MSM spinning out of control. They can't help themselves. They have no professional standards or integrity, and they don't care who knows it. They're not even smart enough to attempt to disguise their lack of integrity. Hey, that kind of sounds like the Bush administration. Maybe the propagandists are in their death throes just like the Bush administration? I can dream, can't I?

I honestly think that these guys are terrorist enemies of the state and should be arrested and prosecuted and imprisoned for life.

Keep reading what he said. It doesn't matter that the sentence in question was, ahem, questioned........

And maybe America, and Europe, and Japan, and Canada — the rich counties — would say, ‘OK, we just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.’ We could do that.

But if we did that, you know as well as I do, China and India and Indonesia and Vietnam and Mexico and Brazil and the Ukraine, and all the other countries will never agree to stay poor to save the planet for our grandchildren.

Stay poor? They have to agree to stay poor? What the heck kind of logic is that there Bill? People talk about McCain being batshit crazy. I think they should get old Billy checked out. He has said some really, really stupid things the last few months. Perhaps he's senile now.

bryancri @ 4:

WRONG WRONG WRONG. Green technology has worked in so many ways Already. In the 1980's Connecticut led the nation in enacting clean water regulations. The naysayers complained it would 'cost jobs'. On the contrary,it created NEW jobs in companys teaming with polluters and getting the rivers and groundwater clean again. I know, because I ran and oversaw the waste water management of the company I worked for. Before the laws, that company dumped things into the rivers and ground you wouln't believe. Now, CT has fish in rivers that were toxic to People and providing jobs for people who take that waste and dispose of it safely.

No, Ron Paul is dropping out, so..............

Doesn't Jake sound just like an 8th grader doing a report on a book he didn't read: "It was, you know, long and, like, you know, really interesting." Though I guess maybe the speech was a little too long so Jake thought he had to cut out all the context. Good lord, regardless of the topic and whose speech this was, this is one of the shoddiest pieces of blogocrap this side of Joe "Joey Sleazeball" Klein! Unless Tapper is blind or lazy or just plain stupid, you have to assume this was an intentional hit job on the Clintons.

How can you have a sustainable economy if you don't have a sustainable environment? I suppose the wealthy elite could live in as yet uninvented life supporting enviro-bubbles, but who would be left to produce the things they need to survive?

If this is the librul MSM, I hate to see the conservative version.

Another corporate media attack on the Clintons.

If Obama gets the nomination, they will go after him harder than the Clintons.

This reminds me of the “fairy tale” quote mess.
Clinton said that Obama’s reputation as an anti-war guy was a fairy tale. He mentioned that Obama has voted consistently to fund the war. (He could also have mentioned, but didn’t, that Obama campaigned for Joe Lieberman against Ned Lamont in the democratic primary in Connecticut!)

The press, mainstream as well as “liberal” outlets, reported his statement as one in which he characterized Obama’s entire campaign for President as a fairy tale. From that misrepresentation, Bill Clinton began to be characterized as a racist. From that, Senator Clinton was characterized as a person lacking in racial sensitivity.

At this point in time it seems as if it’s politically incorrect for anyone to say anything good about either President Clinton or Senator Clinton. Even endorsements for Hillary Clinton go out of their way to say what a swell fellow Obama is…how gifted…and so on.

We are being manipulated, folks.

The Challenges

Global climate change… escalating pollution of land, water, and air… accelerating habitat destruction in the forests and oceans… rapid decline of plant, animal, and fish species… swelling human population… grossly imbalanced resource allocation among nations… huge disparities in human living conditions… price and supply volatility in energy markets… international tensions, terrorism, and war…

These are the critical and unprecedented challenges facing our civilization which inflict a terrible toll on our people, our companion species, and the planet itself. If not reversed soon, they threaten to end human life on Earth.

Our survival will require a vast and dramatic shift in how human civilization generates and uses energy.

Without a revolution in energy, we will not be able to act with the speed and scope demanded by the climate change emergency we face. With this revolution we will be able to create sustainable and just economic development required for world peace.

Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven
by power obtainable at any point in the universe…
It is a mere question of time when men will succeed in
attaching their machinery to the very wheelwork of nature.

With the Clintons they will just dredge up the same old charges even though they have been debunked. With Obama they will just make it up or crop what he says.

The World We Envision

Clean, safe, abundant, inexpensive energy for all…stabilized climate…clean and healthy water, food, and air for all…beautiful blue skies over our cities…low-impact, sustainable forestry and agriculture…beautiful landscapes unspoiled by wires and smokestacks…recycling of virtually all wastes…rivers running free and natural…thriving sustainable local economies…living standards and education rates increasing…birth rates declining…a global culture of sharing…unleashed human creativity…a new and lasting era of world peace… With a revolution in energy as the foundation of renewed and loving stewardship of our planet, we can transform our world into a beautiful and healthy home full of promise, opportunity, abundance, and peace for all of humanity.

I know this isn't an open thread, but it does have to do with the Clintons.

The government must go further, and much faster,
in its response to the moral question of the 21st century

It is a testament to the power of money that Nicholas Stern's report should have swung the argument for drastic action, even before anyone has finished reading it. He appears to have demonstrated what many of us suspected: that it would cost much less to prevent runaway climate change than to seek to live with it. Useful as this finding is, I hope it doesn't mean that the debate will now concentrate on money. The principal costs of climate change will be measured in lives, not pounds. As Stern reminded us yesterday, there would be a moral imperative to seek to prevent mass death even if the economic case did not stack up.

SNIP

Climate change is not just a moral question: it is the moral question of the 21st century. There is one position even more morally culpable than denial. That is to accept that it's happening and that its results will be catastrophic, but to fail to take the measures needed to prevent it.

Hi ConcernedCanuck!

Gee. I hadn't read that Dr. Paul is dropping out! I wonder what your source of reference is? Couldn't be the MSM, they wouldn't even report THAT news!!!

BTW, I'm not a "troll". I simply believe Ron Paul's understanding of our economy is correct.

Read the full parts missing on Steve's link. Clinton says we can't combat global warming, cuz those poor countries won't agree to stay poor. And you guys think this is an attack? I know they misquoted Bill, but his entire quote doesn't do any justice to him. He still sounds retarded.

I didn't say he was incorrect Abbybwood. I said he will be dropping out. He is unelectable, just as Edwards, Kucinich and Dodd were unelectable. People don't want to hear the truth. They want catchy slogans.........like........this years favourite......Change, change, change

I'm no Clinton supporter but what he said makes sense. One of the steps poor countries take to move from poor to not poor is adding industrialization/cars/roads ect to their infrastructure. By moving to become a more weathy nation, they will become bigger polluters. I don't understand why this is such a difficult concept to understand.

Keith Olbermann just gave Limbaugh worst person in the world for this.

So, ABC News now lets Rush Limbaugh fact check stories for them?

Hmmm, a far right corporatist comes to a Liberal blog to dismiss global warming and pimp for corporate interests claiming he's not a troll. What's up with that?

For arguments sake and fair play, wonder why all the MSM and pundits never take anything obama says out of context and make it sound negative....just wondering...same old same old I guess. Bash the Clintons, bash the Clintons, make sure the lies and crap stick. 2/3 of the stuff attributed to Hillary and Bill Clinton is made up crap that is still out there.

Talk about being out of touch, lying or bs.

Bill doesn't know the economy is messed up? What did he think would happen when a dumbass sneak attacks for the pleasure of chimpy? What does he think would happen when money and law becomes interchangable? Husband better stop before he ruins his legacy.

Bill GTFOOH.

This was on Fox "news" this morning too. Hm, are you surprised?

Strange, does anybody remember the big media doing this kind of stuff to a Republican in say, the last 8 years?

Limberger is repeating the same myth.

They're back "on message"

The whole thing stinks of...

ooooohhhhh noooooo Mr billllll

Rove's still here

Whether the comment came from a democrat or a republican, niether would make much sense. We're long past due in creating anything in this country and not selling it to the highest bidder. That greed factor again. What we require is a Manhattan Project that works on new energy alternatives and in doing so, creating new industries for the future while beating the clock on global warming. Rolling over and playing dead is not an option. Too bad a company like Exxon with a 40+ billion profit doesn't put it to better use.

I agree Marge. Cut,snip, paste etc. and you have anyone saying the neocon blather. Now that person has to try to defend a altered video/audio tape. Old neocon trick.

'It's the republicans stupid.'

So what, Jake Tapper and the corporate interests he represent have been debunked as a front for the Rethugs, Jake Tapper is one of their stooges, that was made apparent to me in the cheeky way Bush calls his name in press conferences, like "Ole Tap, he's a good kid"

Just a thought, but why not just bail out the whole country> The tax rebate we're told will be a shot in the arm for Americans as our elected officials want us to go out and spend it so as to help the economy. Isn't that what got us into trouble? Spending beyond our means? So for our esteemed members of Congress, here's a little quiz. A man racks up $60,000 in debt on credit cards. Whose falut is it?

Quiz:

Who is the moron?

A: The guy who racks up 60k in credit card debt.
B: The bank that loans it to him.
C: The shareholder that looks the other way.
D: The taxpayer that bails them all out.

#28: This is the first time I've ever had comments deleted also. I didn't think my comments were particularly acidic. Here is one they deleted.

Repubs and Conservs own the media. They are terrified of the Clintons. They will do anything, say anything to try and make Obama win the nomination. That way, they can "Harold Ford" Mr. Obama after he wins the nomination, and make it a Red November again. Dem voters need to wake up before they PC themselves to death. All you need to know is: New York Post endorses Obama.

Carakav @ 44:

It's ironic how Obama keeps wanting to go back to the past when it comes to Iraq but Clinton wants to move forward. Ironic if you hear any of his stump speeches.

Wonder why he's never asked by the MSM or in the debates about why he didn't bother to show up for a vote on that Iran measure? Everyone else has had to answer for her/his actions (or inactions in his case) except him. Why is that? Nobody knows how he would act on Day One when it comes to Iran because he was a no-show when it counted. Can't draw any other conclusion from his deliberate absence except that.

Donald Luskin did the same thing on his blog. He just posted the one sentence and leaves out the context. I e-mailed him and pointed it out. He replied "Oh, I suppose you are right." But did he correct it on his web site poorandstupid.com? Nope, not as of yet.

Right wingers are quick to organize calls to Dan Rather, the New York Times and other media outlets for retractions and apologies in cases a lot closer than this no-brainer. And our organized call to ABC and Jake Tapaper to issue a retraction and an apology is where?

Only super smart people will ever be able to wade through all the crap spread by Obama and the media about the Clintons. Just save your time and energy trying to convince people who call Clinton followers traitors.

Beelzebud: Right on. That's the first thing I thought when I saw this story, after having watched part of Countdown last night.

Dean Booth: Seems tame enough to me. I guess the kid can't withstand criticism. Maybe he's self-conscious about his budding butt cyst?

Newton Minnow: Beautiful. Well done.

I'm more concerned that Clinton seems to be indicating that there's nothing we can do about global warming, because other developing countries won't be doing anything.

You know what would help us, trade agreements that don't surrender our labor, environmental, and healthy and safety rights. At some point, when we start going green, non-green companies and countries should be taxed so that their destruction of the environment is not their competitive advantage.

gatorbreath @ 6:

It doesn't sound, to me, like Bill Clinton would have any different policy, if progress on global warming risked slowing the economy. He sounds closer to George W Bush than Al Gore on the issue.

The Huffington Post is one of the worst sources of information on the internet, and Americablog is not much better. I don't like bias news sources, give it to me straight or not at all.

Unfortunately, there is no "straight." "Objectivity" is a myth; it is something unattainable (at least for humans), because none of us can interpret things without doing so through the lens of our own experience. That is, things only take on meaning with respect to other things, and so if you remove those "other things," the subject under consideration has no meaning.

Most journalists realize this, too (or at least they should, as it is discussed at length in any good J-school program), but it is then taught that objectivity is an ideal toward which journalism should strive. However, if something is infinitely far away, "striving for it" gets one no closer, yet the news media still all too often present their reporting as "objective."

"Objectivity," therefore, becomes a ruse by the news media to get people to "let down their guard" and take the information as it is given -- to ignore their critical capacities because they are reading "the news."

Information of any kind comes from a perspective, whether it is a "naturalized" perspective that ignores its own philosophical baggage (as noted by Marx) or if it lays bare its foundations. The latter form invites scrutiny by evoking readers' critical capacities; so it seems a much better alternative -- especially in comparison to such a subtly devious (which is generally more damaging) form that is based on the false, yet very effective, aegis of "objectivity."

this is why we need some new kind of Fairness Doctrine.
