No wonder Republicans are feeling pessimistic

Glenn Greenwald pointed to some interesting data from the latest WaPo/ABC poll that shouldn’t be overlooked. Poll respondents were asked which political party they trusted to do a better job on various issues:

* The economy: Dems led Republicans, 52% to 33%

* Immigration: Dems led Republicans, 40% to 37%

* Iraq: Dems led Republicans, 48% to 34%

* The budget deficit: Dems led Republicans, 52% to 31%

* Taxes: Dems led Republicans, 48% to 40%

* The U.S. campaign against terrorism: Dems led Republicans, 44% to 37%

* Health care: Dems led Republicans, 56% to 29%

First, these aren’t cherry-picked to make Dems look good; these were all of the issues polled. Republicans trailed in every category.

Second, in almost every instance, matters are getting worse for the GOP, not better. Especially on the question regarding terrorism, this was the worst Republicans have done on the issue since the WaPo began polling on the question after 9/11. Given that this is supposed to be the party’s signature issue, it’s not at all a good sign.

SHOCKING!!!

I hope this really shows that people are finally waking up!

I'd just like to save a lot of Obama supporters time by stating, with the above in mind...

"Hillary can't win! I won't vote for her if she gets the nod!"

My bad. Should have called her "Shillery." Sorry guys.

Hillary can't win! I won't vote for her if she gets the nod!

(sorry...couldn't resist)

Lets not forget that this isnt because the dems are doing an outstanding job.. it's because this republican administration is the worst in U.S history.

Yep, it's all true however, the Presidential race will turn on a Corporate Media PR construction of which candidate is the most authentic, not a laundry list of policy positions. McCain and Clinton have their public images set in stone, and by and large, the general public has bought into those images. Rigged polls aside, how do you think a ninny such as Bush managed to beat Gore and Kerry? Clinton cannot overcome her negatives to get more than 48% of the popular vote, plain and simple. If we want to win the general election, only Obama can project an image of authenticity more than McCain.

turkeys will vote for xmas (war still not over)

NPR opened its "Morning Edition" today with their own poll showing a McCain-someone ticket less than ten points back of either Democratic candidate.

I gave up listening to NPR about two years ago, only checking it out again because of interest in hearing more about this election, instead of reading. I will not bother to continue, it has become even more vapidly concern-troll bullsh-t covertly toting the worst of faux-liberal, pocketbook-above-all conservative "values", which I have begun to call "global nimby-ism".

I look forward to the overwhelming, even possibly effective, Democratic victory, whether Obama or Clinton.

Oh, and p-ss off, and for good, NPR!

I would take Hillary appointing Supreme Court Judges over McCain any day of the week.

Gary @ 6:

It's because most of the republicans and some of the democrats are infiltrators ( infantile - traitors) from a criminal organization!

In my own little mind there are two main factors mitigating why I do not want Hillary.

1. Her record on the invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq and her refusal to mea culpa.
2. Wanting to avoid 4 to 8 years of relentless, senseless republican attacks and tactics which will interfere with effective government.

But they'll try the same with Obama, or any Dem for that matter.

Republicans HATE Hillary, yet when I try to pin them down on just exactly why, it comes down to misogyny and fear. There is no rational political arguement for why they hate her.

They just do.

I already did the above for you, but thanks.

There's that hope I keep hearing about.

Uh no.. I don't think you did.

The Fake Republicans don't want to win.
They will hand the ball off to the Fake Democrats
who will keep the ball inches from the goal forever.

Then we can all be kept in thrall with the abortion debate

Britney's kootch debate until we are all asleep and
someone turns out the lights.

even with this kind of support for the dems
right now in congress the dems are about to give
bush his telecom immunity.

the voting is becoming biased in favor of bush with
some of the amendments only requiring a 50 vote ok (those sided in favor of bush)
and a 60 vote margin for those which will deny bush any option to
violate the law.

protect us and Impeach bush and cheney now
pelosi is a total dick if she let bush/cheney shit on the American citizens again.

No need for Republicans to be fake, except on values issues. The Republican party is the party of the economic elite. They only use values as a way to get dumb suckers to vote for them. On the other hand, there are quite a few Republicans in Democratic clothing who may well try to throw the race. Ex-Democrat Lieberman and the corporate financed DLC have worked for years to do just that. Their goal is to gut the Democratic party of its principles so that it becomes a powerless repository for working middle class opposition to the corporate agenda.

+ We have Limbaugh of all people saying nice-ish things about both Hillary and Obama.

I am so sorry to have to agree. I have been a life long Democrat and expected big things after the election of 06. What a disappointment.

What the (BIG BLANKING NASTY WORD) happened?

Reid and Polise have joined Bush in the most disgusting daisy chain in history.

How about Senator Dodd and Dennis K. for leadership for a change?

And unfortunately, the Democrats, as a whole, have no real vision to offer.

Gee, let's just throw good Progressives like Senators Feingold and Dorgan in the dumpster because the Democratic party has been infiltrated by some corporate stooges. We can all just throw in the towel, that will show those corporatist bastards!

Weeellll, sorry bout that cuzzz... I guess that whole pnac thang juussst ain't gonna work out for you pricks after all.... Not even the GOP/MSM flavored version of the kool-aid... Always smelled like fascism and blind greed to me... Guess it smells that way or beginning to, to most other folks too, after all this time and propaganda money...wasted that coulda/shoulda been better spent.

You GOPers done went and hitched your asses to the wrong boat and it's sinking like a rock now... Thing that pisses me off is you folks and that creaky boat's dragging the whole damned country down with yas....I'm thinkin we're just gonna hafta go and turn all the perps (and we all know who they are) over to some international authorities if we ever hope to avoid being completely ruined as a society and nation by this braindead pack of war criminals and greed mongers... But given the politics of the situation and the gutless nature of the legislative branch of this nations government, I ain't gonna hold my breath on that one...

Then there's that whole money end of it... Yea, the grandkids kids will be spitting on your graves over this one George & Dick... You have damned near managed to ruin us all... In seven short interminable years. Gotta be some kind of record for incompetence in governing... Nope, history will not be kind to you two and the rest of your worthless pack ... I don't care how many Faux apologists try to slap fresh paint on you two pigs!!! As uncle Walter would say.. 'That's the way it is'

Please do enjoy your last 11 months.. After that, you and your kind or dun!!! finito, kaput, outahere!!!! Better hope your security detail is good and doesn't hold any personal grudges, cause they will be earning there paychecks making sure you sonofabitches don't end up 'rendered' to another country to really face the consequences of your evil evil bullshit!!!! JD

Kick 'em while their down! I want the Right hurt so bad it never gets up! Yeah!

To the Congresscritters who cave: we're taking names...

...wow...that felt ...GOOD!

The pollsters merely asked the wrong questions.

Which party caters most to the rich?
Which party dislikes people of color more?
Which party thinks Jesus would bomb Iraq?
Which party is the most hypocritical, especially concerning sexuality?
Which party is fear-based?

See, the Republicans are #1 in so many areas.

Very Impressive

I know the Republicans are unpopular. I am very proud Americans are not as ignorant as to avoid this reality. This admission speaks to man's struggle to do better. Yet, at every opportunity, the Republicans make this "match up" point that against John McCain all Democrats come up short, especially Hillary Clinton.

The Republicans would have a hard time defeating Ralph Nader on a one on one. When Democrats are showing up to vote at a better then 2 to 1 bases, you can bet the numbers favor the Democrats. These impressive nuimbers will not stop the Republicans from trying to win in November; they are using the age tested strategy of divide and conquer.

You can bet most of this so-called race baiting claim was rooted in conservative attempts to initiate a divide and conquer strategy. It almost worked; the Clinton and Barack Obama camps were ready to chop each others head off a few weeks back. It was the testament of the two candidate's united appearance in the last debate that equalized the last divide and conquer attempt.

The conservative media's attempt to insert Obama into the front runner slot has worked and backfired; the strategy was doomed to fail from conception. The Republicans wanted to face Barack Obama and they may of succeeded; however, to do so would have to build up Obama to the caliber of the candidate they did not want to face. In other words, they help to make a candidate stronger then the now former front runner. The Republicans f_ _ ked this up good.

I think the victory would be a pile on victory if the Democratic ticket were Obama and Clinton or Clinton Obama.

Joseph

Even if Hilary wins tomorrow - she'a already lost. Her only way to actually win is to bully the party faithful into seating Florida and Michigan. - Talk about dejavu - All she needs is Katherine Harris. Barack has taken the party - another week and it would be certain, but Hilary loses no matter what. Even if she won the general election she would be stepping into the same briar patch that her husband entered - a target.

I think repugs have already given up on this election. They will give McCain a shot, because he's old, and yesterdays news. They will regroup and save their up and comming stars for, four years from now. History shows us, that when the country gets pissed at a party, the party pays big time at the polls. Repugs know they are going to take a beating this time around.

matlin props up the neocon gop turd....but the feedback is overwhelming

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/02/04/meet-the-press-lady-mccheney-sa...

Remember when Kerry was nominated, the polls almost all had Bush defeating Kerry about 52%-48%? And over the election year, no amount of republican incompetence, no amount of Bush blundering, no amount of facts about the candidates and their positions; nothing, nothing, nothing moved those polls, and Bush won by around that margin. I'm sorry, but issues don't matter; the facts bear that out. It will be personalities and what people can allow themselves to believe about candidates. ("He/she seems like my kind of person; I'm sure he/she will have my best interests in mind.") (Gag.) I wish this weren't true; I'm waiting for some facts to prove me wrong. The above statistics? 'Won't make a difference. Hillary would be a better president. But Obama has the best chance of winning, so I hope he gets the nod.

I hope Democrats don't get over confident and decide not to vote. The country can't handle 4 more Republican years.

Nice also to post previous time periods data . . .

Ruthless People @ 35:

Hell, with numbers like that we might could even take the White House if we had a strong candidate.

Dems should be able to run Krusty the Clown and win.

We still have more than two choices. Edwards suspended, not ended, his campaign. Any delegates he picks up in the 22 states participating in the primary tomorrow will go with him to the convention, should he opt to go. We WILL have a Democratic candidate in November and I will vote for whomever that person turns out to be. No more Republicarnage! But in order to keep the celebrity candidates focused on the issues JRE introduced to the campaign, we have to do our part at the polling place. Write in or check off John Edward's name. Keep UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, AN END TO POVERTY, THE END OF THE IRAQ WAR, and the RECLAMATION OF OUR NATIONAL SOUL at the forefront of this campaign! Am I the only person who was bored to tears at the congratulatory "members only" tone of the last Dem debate?

Yes, one of these folks will be the Democratic candidate (I won't say "our" candidate, because so many of us -not just JRE supporters -were disenfranchised). Come November he or she will have, if not my heart, my support. At present they're scrambling a bit to round up JRE's supporters-but as soon as they feel they've got us, and without John to crib from, the populist issues that sparked so many passions in the electorate are not guaranteed a venue. Force their feet to the fire! Vote your conscience!

SUSPENDED--NOT ENDED.
If you were an Edwards supporter, you probably still are-and you can vote for him tomorrow.

Heh, not to dis all the great work Nader has done for the American people, but get real, he'd be hard put to win a seat on the city council. That fact won't mitigate his ego or disastrous decision to bring down the Democratic party and allow first Bush, and now McCain the ability to appoint the next Supreme. Where will that leave his consumer advocacy?

If the Democrats do get 60% of the congress, we need to get 6 or 7 constitutional amendments put in place right away to prevent continued Repug damage to America.

1, remove the "personhood" of corporations.
2 get rid of the electoral college and remove the need for mega money required to run for office. (not gonna happen)
3 codify a right to privacy.
4 Americans own their own bodies, and just like in the bible, you are alive whence you breathe.
5 Create some kind of rule that only congress can declare war.

BTW, I support everything Nader stands for, except the need, or efficacy, of a third party. I'd rather take back the party from the corporatists and force the corporatists back into the Republican fold. If Nader had spent his time campaigning for Kucinich or Edwards, we'd have more Progressive delegates to force the major contenders to address our issues.

2 words to cheer up the GOP: Barak Obama.

Dems need to pick the right side of these issues and campaign on their stand if they intend to win

Well, the Iraq quagmire has been bumped to the back burner. You see, if the media stops all coverage, the level of anger and disgust fades away. It’s right in the play book.

The rotting economy has taken center stage. But saying the recession word is scaring the crap out of Republicans and the entire middle and lower class.

It has been studied and proven that when the economy goes bad in an election year, the party holding the White House is more or less toast. The Republicans know this too.

The play book suggests to stall the recession, (way too late in my opinion) arrange with the media to bury the news, and pretend all is great. Should I receive any money from the government in their feeble attempt to slow down the recession, I will use all of it to pay bills. Just what the Republicans do not want.

All they can do at this point is manipulate “we the people” into selecting the easiest DEM. candidate they think they can steal the election from. With the media’s blessing, of course.

Don’t think for one second that this is not the case.

They want “we the people” divided and distracted. That’s the only way they can win.

It’s right in the play book!

I plan to stay united and focused.

Join in, spread the word.

There is a nice article in Automobile magazine this month about the Tesla electric car, a concept that Nikola would surely approve of. Tesla was one of the most brilliant electrical engineers and inventors of all time, and in my estimation his work, vision, and impact on the world is underrated. He was the genius that lit the world.

Great over 50% of the populous listened to Kucinich, that is progress.
When will the political dialog return to "equitable wealth" distribution, responsible economic policies, best methods for the Federal government to "promote the General Welfare"?
Maybe after 20% unemployment?
When a buck buys you a stick of gum (made in China no doubt)?
When "Bush-villes" spring up in your central park?
When video "dudes" and "dudette" expert in video game slaughter get an invitation by Uncle Sam to try it out for real (no re-start button provided)?
Or when the Constitution gets a new stamp placed on it "Made in China and India"?

When the course of events continue down its current path and nothing "changes", ask yourself this one itsy-bitsy question: "Who to blame?" Please do this while looking at the mirror, makes it a bit easier to see the culprit.

Flat tax, sales tax? No thanks. Why should I pay a greater portion of my income to taxes than the rich? They don't consume more food or gas proportional to their income than I do.

Ron Paul blows for many other reasons as well.
Anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-U.N. Besides, he's a Texan.

NO NEW TEXANS!

Well, bush certainly didn't do the GOP any favors with his veto threat of the FISA bill.
How can anyone believe that the white house (run by republicans) actually cares about the GWOT when they will hold up the GWOT to ensure that their corporate masters aren't going to be prosecuted for their misdeeds.

Seems like since pelosi took impeachment off the table, the white house isn't even trying to hide their crimes and now, they are taking the rest of the GOP down with them.

I can't even muster crocodile tears for them.

Obama means Red November for GOP, followed by a blu..blue, blue, blue Christmas for Dems. Thank ya very much.

But..but, you know what McCain will run on: "I"m the Commander-in-Chief Guy".....not some wimpy surrender monkey liberal! And don't be surprised if it doesn't, once again, resonate with the stupid American public. I think the Dems can negate this by just painting McCain as yet another NeoCon War Hawk, and self-proclaimed fans of Reaganomics. Which gave us, respectively, 6 years of ruinous war/occupation and 20 of the last 28 years being fiscally irresponsible. But McCain will flood the airways with ads of him lying on that POW bed....but won't tell us he did finish by signing a "I'm a war criminal" confession (for which I don't blame him at all)...even though in 2004 when the SwiftBoat Liards were
under attack, McCain's response was to say that the Vietnam War shouldn't be an issue in a Presidential election. Of course that was McCain Version 2004, not to be confused with Version2000 or Version2008.

But Americans felt republicans were the better party to guide them to the best spots for gay bathroom sex. If they ever feel the need that is.

The amazing thing to me is not that the democrats lead on all of these issues. The numbers I can't understand are the 29-39% of stupid bastards in tihis country who still give the repukes the advantage on any issue! Are there really 120 million fucking morons in this country? If you were an Edwards supporter, you probably still are-and you can vote for him tomorrow.

There is a 15% threshold in many of the states. If Edwards gets less than 15% of the vote, he gets NO delegates. He did not even meet that threshold in some of the states he did compete in. There is no chance of that happening without him running.

The main reason he only suspended his campaign is so he would still qualify for federal matching funds to help retire his campaign debt.

AGAIN, as I look at these numbers, I find myself asking this question yet again:
"How many people in Amerika are completely, and utterly out of touch with reality and/or fukking retarded.

Lemmings.

I know you haven't gotten around to posting the Olbermann Worst Person for 02-04-08, but I am about to hit the sack and cannot wait to make an observation or two about Keith's selection of Lush Rambo as Worsest. He lambasted "the comedian Limbaugh" for stating, on three different occasions, that Sen. Linsie Glam, a McCain supporter, had gotten close enough to the candidate "to get anal poisoning." Keith asked the rhetorical question, why was Rush so obsessed with peoples' posteriors.

My theory: Limbaugh is onto something. Maybe he is channeling Larry Flynt, who announced a while back that he was in possession of startling information on a high ranking member of congress who's next on the never-ending list of phonies who pretend to be what they are not only to get caught up in expose's so damning they bow out of politics altogether (unless, of course, they're Larry Craig). As I enjoy Flynt's game, I spent a few moments musing on just who he planned to "out," and I came to the conclusion that the most likely contenders are Mitch McComical and Linsie. (I think Linsie actually thinks he has a chance of being the choice for Veep, which would be disastrous for McCain.)

Reports of McComical shunning Craig when the latter returned to the capitol to resume his senatorial duties could indicate a high degree of paranoia on the Kentucky senator's part, almost like he was thinking, "I can't be seen with this homo. People might think I'm a fruiter, too!" Just the opposite reaction was reported of Linsie Glam, who supposedly bumped into Craig outside the cafeteria and greeted him enthusiastically, which might lead one to believe his gaydar sounded a fellow traveler. After all, Glam is a bachelor and had to fend off newspaper reports in his native So. Carolina addressing rumors he might be gay. (Yeah, yeah, I know, "Lindsay" in the South is just as often a male name as female, but he just seems to me so...well...swishy. All of that eyelash batting when he appears on Russert debating a Dem! Sooooo Bette Davis!)

As for the Limbaugh comment, given a person in Rush's position would be a natural vessel for all kinds of homophobic trivia deposited in his fat little piggie earlets by evangelical/fundamentalist Christers with a heterosexual agenda, he's surely heard by now of the practice, among some gays (and straights, for that matter) known as "rimming," by which is meant analinctus to put it country simple. That is, one person gives another a good tongue bath even including insertion of the glossa into the rectum of the recipient.

Yes, I know, Limbaugh could have been thinking of simple "brown nosing," but I think he would have used that expression if he had. Actually, I think he knows Linsie is a closet faggot and is hinting at it to damage McCain's chances of getting elected. Just a theory, but I'll stick by it. And, hey, to those of you who think I am being bigoted by using the "F" word with reference to Linsie, let me say I firmly believe that anyone who pretends to be straight when, in fact, he is gay is a person who gives homosexuals a bad name. Hence: faggot. I employ the term advisedly, and with license.

Maybe…but racists outnumber us “cynics” by…a lot. Enjoy your journey to President McCain.

Lemmings.

Then your country deserves actually what it gets.

The retard you had running things for 8 years and the angry retard McCain.

If you were running a business would you hire either guy to run the broom closet.

You deserve what you get.

My FELLOW AMERICANS..........in the name of our founding fathers of DEMOCRACY.
In remembrance of the thousands of AMERICANS who died and sacrificed their lives to defend our FREEDOMS; I CALL each and everyone of YOU to participate in defending those who threaten our DEMOCRACY. WE ask just one sacrifice from YOU...........VOTE......tomorrow.

Pessimistic though they may be, Republicans have a way of winning presidential elections that defies common sense.

Recipe:

1. 2 cups Democratic incompetence
2. 3 cups Republican sleaze
3. 5 cups voter ignorance and stupidity
4. 2 cups standard MSM malfeasance
5. Stir vigorously
6. Deep fat fry.

Makes: 1 narrow Republican victory
Serves: all of the rich for four years

scott @ 15:

The Fake Republicans don't want to win.
They will hand the ball off to the Fake Democrats
who will keep the ball inches from the goal forever.

Then we can all be kept in thrall with the abortion debate
and the war debate and the environment debate and the
Britney's kootch debate until we are all asleep and
someone turns out the lights.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

You forgot fighting over evolution/creationism too.

What a candidate-deciding issue that is...............................

So what if the polls don't look good for the Rethugs. Diebold will save them in November. That is if presidential directive 51 hasn't made votingmachines obsolete by then.

oh really @ 79:

What do you expect from MSM, the truth?

I am not a "Dem." I am a Democrat. Why do you abbreviate "Democrat" but don't abbreviate "Republican"?

Lord Balto @ 85:

I do. Republicans are GOPS. I can't abbreviate them to "Reps," as that would imply representative government, which we haven't had in quite a long time, the only people the pols truly represent being multinationals, special interests, and K-Street.

With Repuplicans asleep at the wheel on 9-11, I wouldn't trust them with protecting us from terrorism either.

BINGO!

The election is the Dems' to lose.

Troll at #40, you forgot and left out the word Alliance.

Abbreviates to repub(s) i guess - not a slur, just sounds like it

I think the neocons deserve eight more years of clinton...especially after what we have be put through with gee dumbya.

I wonder how it was phrased - "Which party, Democrats or Republicans" or just "Which party?" And how the third party responses broke down.
