Open Thread: Hillary & McCain take CA
By bluegal Monday Feb 04, 2008 10:30pm
Okay, I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry.
This is tonight's general open thread, we've also got a Super Tuesday Open Thread running.
MSNBC calls it for Hillary Clinton. With 15 % in, Clinton has 638, 339. Obama has 378, 795. There's a long way to go to figure out the delegate split...
They called it for McCain also.

Coincidences? http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/cgi-bin/blogs/voices.php/2008/02/05/p23103
I have come to really dislike McCain!
I hate Edwards supporters even more
now. Anyway, the service sector is in the crapper.
The CIA admits to water-boarding at least three
suspects. Bush threatens to veto
anti-immunity legislation.
Politicians
Full of it
Obama is a very good speaker, but part of it is because he uses teleprompters. It has an incredible unconscious effect though, people thinking that this is truly a spontaneous speech from the heart.
I want Obama, but I don't know how I feel about this. There was an article comparing the speaking abilities of MLK to Obama, Clinton, Mccain.
For now, this is interesting. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kim-mance/cold-calculating-hillary_b_85149...
Grampa is so 90s...er, 80s...er, 70s...as in 1870s.
you got SOME sense of humor, lady!
Why is it when Republicans try to be funny it comes off as mean spirited?
Wow, another shining example of that oh-so-zany John McCain sense of humor. Almost as hilarious as "Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran"...
this is pretty funny. Does that make me a republican? you gotta give him credit for having a sense of humor...
People
Who elect Republican people
Are the stupidest people
In the world!
And Repubicans
In positions of power
Are the most dangerous people
In the world!
I guess deep down at heart, in spite of all those Daily Show appearances, McCain really is kind of an authoritarian dick, huh?
I couldn't even finish watching that.
Why do you hate Edwards supporters? Because they're supporting the only anti-corporate, anti-war candidate? Because they're flipping off the corporate media by saying "we won't vote for who you tell us to vote for?"
If Obama can't get the majority of the votes in the primary, he doesn't win. Obama is NOT Edwards. Obama has taken 10's of millions from the same corporations that have driven this country into the recession (soon to be depression) we're in. He's not a progressive, he's not even a liberal. As an Edwards supporter, why on EARTH should I support him? Because he speaks well? Uses the word "change"? Whatever.
Zeppy: Edwards isn't even running any more! He was a loser then, and he's a loser now. And Obama can't get support, because certain nameless voters have it in for him, because their horse was a bad bet. If they don't like losing, they should back a real winner, not sabotage the winner for the other 49% of us Obama voters.
Ruthless People @ 8:
From your mouth to Darwin's ear! (I don't believe in God, so I thought this might work.)
I remember watching a few clips from that The Half Hour News Hour piece of crap, and far too many of the 'bits' made me absolutely uncomfortable. Like when someone is flipping out and acting in appropriate in a social situation, and people are trying to be polite but they can't look directly at said someone. For example, the "commemorative plates" celebrating the liberals who wanted to "cut and run" from Iraq. Ten plates with various Democrats who stood up to protest the war and tried to end it. Ha?
THAT was completely uncalled for Blue.
I know you apologized profusely so I'll try to forgive you, but I just can't find it in my heart to do so right now.
Maybe tomorrow. I dunno. ;^p
This clip just reminds me of how much I USED to like McCain. He used to seem like a real human being, with some hard-line conservative views but a reasonably moderate approach to government. Now, he's just a nutjob warmonger. (But at least he used to have a sense of humor about himself.) This clip also reminds me of how much I don't like Streisand's music. :)
NBC is projecting that the GOP has won twice in California tonight.
fuck.
John Witherspoon @ 10:
I do? Not if his sense of humor isn't funny. I don't know if that makes you a Republican, JW, but that's something you don't want to take any chances with, so you might want to take some precautions. Maybe watch some old Richard Pryor videos or some Bill Hicks clips on youtube, then see if you still think this is funny.
BTW, in my experience, an unhealthy interest in golf can also be a warning sign of creeping Republicanism.
WAY too early to call CA
Weak, the last thing the Democrats want is to have the Clinton's back in the White House. Besides, Clinton is a damn DINO. Not sure why my state went with her....must be all that effin DLC money.
Hillary won Cali mostly because ~72% of Asians voted for her while less than 30% voted for Obama and among Hispanics ~65% voted for Hillary while a mere ~30% voted for Obama.
I'd like to thank all the minority douchbags. Thanks a lot, idiots! You have proven that you're shallow and thoughtless.
CA results somewhat misleading as of 9:20 p.m. Pacific.
LA County: 8% reporting
Alameda County: 0%
San Francisco: 0%
San Diego: 8%
Before folks start calling it, it would be nice to have higher percentages reporting from the major population centers.
Hillary gave a great speech tonight. I didn't vote her, but if she wins she will do well.
Considering how many votes are for John Edwards, it's pretty obvious her win was at least partially due to early voting...
Dear Edwards voters in CA.....
Your man is no longer in the race. Please chose someone that is still running.
Sincerely,
Reality
Where are you getting your info John?
CheeryEyes @ 23:
Well, that was an inflaming way to put it....but....I believe your stats. I have seen plenty of reports that hispanics do not trust Obama and the same with Asian communities. It is very sad to see racism in the political spectrum and unfortunately for Obama, he will face exponentially greater amounts of it if he gets the Democratic nod.
Clintons have done a thorough job of ensuring that Obama is the "black" candidate. One more reason why I hate a politician that will use GOP/Rovian tactics.
VoR @ 27:
Dude....you have heard of absentee ballots right?
CheeryEyes @ 23:
Just how many Asians are there in California? I think the most Asians could care less about who wins and who doesn't. There are more Caucasians and Hispanics than asians in California and i'm sure less than 50% of the Asian population is registered to vote.
I'd be amazed if most Asians voted for Hillary rather than Obama.
Why? Becuase Obama spent part of his childhood in Indonisia+the rest of it in HI.
The democratic nomination is going to be decided at the convention, folks. Hope those Super Delegates are able to pick the right horse.
Mike Politik @ 29:
My stats came directly from CNN (about 30 minutes ago).
CD:
They like keeping blacks away from universities by calling it "reverse discrimination", so why are you surprised.
When, how, and by whom was this video made?
Good point Mike.... =)
Tequila @ 3:
Agreed, why vote for someone who has dropped out?
Scott in Chicago google "absentee ballots"
Mike Politik @ 29:
That's an interesting perspective. May I ask why the voting patterns of, say Asians in California makes them racist but the voting patterns of blacks in Georgia not? Are they racist and or sexist if they don't agree with your choice?
Tequila @ 14:
Bullshit. Throughout the country, reports are that Obama got most of the Edwards support. Dunno about California. But what's your beef? It was a solid night for Obama. The only real loser tonight was on the GOP side: Mittsie is g-g-g-g-g-GONE.
CD @ 39:
Ah... makes sense. I forgot about that. Truth told I would have voted for Edwards if I had to vote two weeks ago. :)
As of now, Edwards has ~119,000 votes in CA.... that is a lot of absentee ballots, no? I'm williing to conceed that people voted for him before he dropped out. But that many? Hmm....
Ron Paul went down HARD tonight.
If you know any of his supporters be nice to them and try to convince them that we need to keep a Bush heir out of the white house.
CheeryEyes @ 23:
Okay, I voted for Obama.....
As someone who is bi-racial (white/asian) I really think that your observation need a bit of fine tuning when it comes to routing out all the "minority douchbags".
Turn it down a notch...Hillary just may win...
no no no no no -- this can't be right, about Hillary in California -- too few reporting already???!!! the networks mis-called Missouri for Hillary early on and then had to change as the votes got counted......
Kevin:
Yeah, I really want the religious nut or the military nut to be able to beat Hillary. Anyway, in spite of his populist bs, I guess Edwards really is the white guy who kept the black man down.
Another question. If a Republican were to win the presidency which one would cause you the least pain? Just to be up front about this I'd have to say McCain although none of them would get a vote from me.
Crackpotpress @ 25:
Remember how she followed through on that whole healthcare thing in the 90's? Especially after the insurance companies came a knocking with those sacks of money.
america, i think your country is waking up! the losers tonight are the few right wing nuts who tried shove mittens down your throats. stamp them out.
Tequila @ 3:
why hate Edward supporters, what makes you think they would have voted your way? Edwards should have stayed in and taken his share.
Scott in Chicago @ 38:
Beyond a myriad of reasons, some good ones are:
He represented their interests and they don't believe the others do.
To register displeasure at the corporate structure that supports Clinton and Barack.
Or whatever. Some folks don't think the election's a video game, so they vote what their conscience permits. Others may be racist and sexist. Who knows? It just seems relatively unimportant at this point to glom onto them. I think Obama had a good night, as best a comeback as any I've seen from what the national polls said just 10 days ago.
Peter:
Romney, because he's like the Kerry of his party. He's not someone who'd rock the boat, but he is someone who'd at least clean up the mess of the last guy.
Kevin:
Well you're in luck, because we won't have any structure left in this country after the nuclear war with Iran...
I checked local SF results at 9:30 and that 15% was entirely absentee/mail-in. Based on that, Clinton did indeed have a large margin over Obama. Then I reloaded the page 20 minutes later and with 5.4% of the election-day results added the margin closed considerably. A lot has happened since people first started mailing in their ballots.

Travis @ 49:
Now you're being a lying sack.
From Wikipedia:
Travis @ 49:
Could have been sacks of money or could have been the savage media attacks she endured for trying to be just a little ahead of her time. I don't recall a first lady who had so much crap thrown at her as Hillary did.
Lollimom @ 56:
Look at her contributions, she's been more than happy to take that Harry and Louise money and come up with a plan that will pay off for private insurers AND penalize people who don't pony up. Real progressive, that.
Tequila @ 47:
Yeah, I really want the religious nut or the military nut to be able to beat Hillary. Anyway, in spite of his populist bs, I guess Edwards really is the white guy who kept the black man down.
Sorry, I'm not biting. Some shoulder chips are glued down too well to waste the effort, but go find a real enemy to rail against instead of creating new ones.
Tequila @ 35:
They like keeping blacks away from universities by calling it "reverse discrimination", so why are you surprised.
I hope I'm not reading this right....
I'm surprised by this statement....
Who likes to keep blacks away from universities?...
Are you referring to asian as "They"?...
If so, that's hurtful....I'm bi-racial (white/asian)...I voted for Obama...
If I am misinterpreting what you are saying apologies to you but if not why in the world would you think an asian would have any interest in holding back another minority?...
Tequila @ 14:
You know some Edwards supporters did support Obama
California isn't an all or nothing race. Some of the delegates Obama did get may have come from the help of some Edwards supporters.
I can't speak for those who did vote for Edwards. But maybe you should reconsider the ad hominem attack.
Tequila @ 35:
Because statements like these are a little over the top.
I am curious but maybe we will know tomorrow.... Who won the popular vote OVERALL on the democratic side?
I will be interested to know who we voted for as dems overall tonight.
Kevin: Why aren't you biting? Edwards let Bush steal the black vote in Ohio, and now he's succeeded in siphoning the white votes from Obama.
ticktock: By they, I meant the types of Asians who vote Hillary, not Obama. The entrenched and assimilated ones living in upscale white neighborhoods.
Gee, looks like Obama was completely blown away in the delegate count. NOT.
Tequila @ 53:
Romney, because he's like the Kerry of his party. He's not someone who'd rock the boat, but he is someone who'd at least clean up the mess of the last guy.
A fair assessment. I think it would be difficult judgment call between Romney and McCain. They've both renounced much more liberal positions previously held. Hoping to appeal to that ol' base their always talking about. You'd almost have to hope the one who is telling us the biggest lies now were the winner in that sad eventuality.
Folks, best not to feed bigots and trolls.
CD,
as of 9:51 Pacific:
LA County: 8.1% reporting
Alameda County: 0%
San Francisco: 0%
San Diego: 8.3%
As reported by http://vote.ss.ca.gov/
Only 16.7% of the vote are in, and those are not from the most populous counties. Seems a real shame that the networks called it so soon. They had a whole night to drag results and entertain us an audience. Instead they called it early, let the A list go to bed, and queued the talking heads.
Has Hilary won any caucus? If not, can someone explain why? Thank you.
I'm sorry, but this scares me to death. McCain vs Clinton is the one chance the repubs have for retaining the White House, and if they do, it's good-bye Supreme Court to the far right, and good-by forty years of civil rights achievements. I've posted before that when Kerry was nominated, Bush led him in national polls, about 52%-48%, and a year of campaigning failed to nudge those numbers a bit. People hate Clinton, and think McCain is some likable independent moderate republican. I don't see anything changing that before the election. Those whole appeal of McCain right now is his ELECTABILITY. I hope I'm wrong. But I think I'm right.
John @ 67:
They called 2004 early too and look what happened.
VoR @ 27:
Dear Owner of a Time Machine -
Please loan me your device. I sent in my ballot before he dropped out. I need your time machine to go back and change what I did.
Equally sincerely,
Reality & Knowledge
ps. too bad your guy can't get win without help; neither could mine
mia213 @ 68:
No.
mia213 @ 68:
No.
mia213 @ 68:
You're welcome.
Hillary hasn't won any caucuses because they are so public, and her supporters tend to wear McCain 08 pins.
BG, youre a cruel, cruel woman. Cruel funny woman.
Damn, he can't carry a tune in a bucket.
In Colorado, 118,000 Dems voted, versus 40,000 Repugs. I'd like to see the numbers nationwide.
The GOP tends to have the older people, who participate relatively heavily in off-year and primary elections. How are they going to triple their turnout in November?
I think CD summed it all up quite succinctly, in post #19.
I am for Obama because I want somone for vote *for* in the general election, rather than just holding my nose and voting for the lesser of two evils.
"How are they going to triple their turnout in November?"
Hillary.
CNN calls Missouri for Obama - barely.
Oh God no, please don't let Hillary be the Dem frontrunner.
Talk about being shooting yourself in the foot!
It will go into history as one of the dumbest political plays ever if Hillary becomes the Dem nominee in '08.
There is still a glimmer of hope, so Democrats, please don't fook this up. At this critical historical moment, step out and cast off the stigma of being cowardly, naive collectivist defeatists, and don't gamble on loosing an election that is practically handed to you. The current crises also represent a big opportunity for real change.
There is no reason for such a gamble, -there is nothing to gain.
Please, in one moment, change everything anyone has said about you, and create your own reputation as the party that saved America, and maybe even the world and freedom and prosperity for the human race.
I don't underestimate the effect of stupidity, ignorance and naivite in the Democratic ranks, but there must be an awful lot of infiltrators and provocateurs in places in the Democratic party. No-one can manage to be so big loosers time after time without someone making a conscious effort to sabotage things on the inside.
After 8 years of Clinton which lead right into Bush, -the most disastrous Presidency in American history, how can Americans set themselves up, even making the gamble, for the same or at least very similar once again? Are you all masochists?
Such a divisive character as Hillary is sure to leave many Dems (the active true liberal community) home on election night, and will depend on her somewhat shallow and boring fooking establishment base to vote for her. She will never energize the Democratic party, -she will make sure there is a third party running which will steal a considerable amount of the liberal and progressive vote. She is the only chance Republicans have of getting the next presidency in a remotely legal way.
Hillary and McCain competing for the "centrist" (read: THERE IS NO SUCH THING) vote. is exactly what your/our corporate masters want. Again, there is no such thing, -unless you mean UNABLE-TO-DECIDE-RIGHT-FROM-WRONG-ON-ANY-ISSUE. What you know as "centrist" is the position the main stream media represent, a political position that blows in the wind and basically makes your ideas and morals into pudding.
Argh, it's bad news if America cannot even muster to nominate Obama, the only viable candidate that might represent change for the good. Obama has such momentum that he will be impossible to stop if Dems only manage to make him their nominee.
So, are you saying that Republicans support Hilary Clinton? Or they want John Mcain to have to run against her instead of Obama because they are scared of Obama? I'm confused. Thanks again.
John @ 67:
Here is the thing- Clinton was clearly supposed to have large numbers in the Southern CA. The yet uncounted Bay Area will carry a massive amount of Obama support.
On the bright side if both Hillary and McCain are nominated it will upset hate radio to no end.
Did McCain read his acceptance speech? And is anyone else tired of him trotting out his 96 year old mom? I know WHY he's doing it, trying to show that 72 isn't THAT old, but heckfire, He's 2 years older than the tired old man named Reagan was when he was elected.... OR is he just a momma's boy?
CD @ 82:
Exploding heads all around.
CD @ 82:
Where's the downside?
Obama has moved ahead in NM, by 400 votes, with 46% counted.
On the downside we'll end up with either President Hillary or 100-years-in-Iraq -McCain.
Scott @ 69:
Yup, I think McCain WILL be "elected" just as Dubya was. *adjusting tin-foil chapeau*
katsiskats @ 85:
Both McCain and Hillary are the same right-of-center candidate running on the same failed Bush policies.
The MSM calls Cali with 15 percent in? Dosent suprise me one bit.
I guess the MSM and the Diebold black boxes did their job...
Hillary hasnt won a democratic caucus because repubs are crossing over and polluting the polls because they know McCain would kick her ass in the real election. Its a joke and any REAL Dem knows it.
Obama is winning the battle ground states and most of the red states anyway. What does that tell you?
Fuck!
I like what NPR said about Mexican Americans voting for Hillary. It went something like, "they remember the Clinton years and aren't informed enough to vote for Obama."
Bunch of jackasses who want us to lose and then get deported by McCain.
fact remains...hispanics are more racist towards blacks in cali
i do not blame either side, they have been pitted against each other by the power elite
and the dumbass thing the do is vote for hillary, who will continue this race vs race struggle to keep her power base
im sick to my stomach
Can I ask a favor? When the gays are all in concentration camps, and the women are not allowed to make their own healthcare choices, and our country is in the middle of WWIII, and the gap between the rich and the poor has become too great to ever repair... will all the Hillary supporters who handed the supreme court 2-3 right wing judges and McCain the presidency say they're sorry?
Nick @ 81:
Sorry to burst your bubble, but looking at the updated results in the SF bay Area, only in Marin County is Obama leading at all. So much for the massive amount of Obama support, which is clearly the result of self-delusion among his followers and media hype.
Jacob @ 77:
I used to worry about this, too, but I think the Anyone But the Republican vote is going to be huge from White House to school board now. The religious right will not turn out for McCain -- Dobson has already called a boycott -- and may well run a third party candidate. And a fourth, stark raving loony party, featuring Tancredo or an acolyte will take lots of immigration and gun nuts, including a lot of the more rabid Hillary haters.
The numbers are clear: The GOP is doomed.
Don't even go there about Asians and hispanics?
Which minority group voted (women as well as men) overwhelming for Barrack Obama by over 80% in Illinois, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina?
You are so blind in your support for one candidate you choose to ignore the fallacy of your argument.
Guy Fawkes @ 94:
Are you honestly a Clinton supporter? I have yet to meet an educated person that is involved in politics that supports her. That especially the case among those who identify themselves as true progressives.
ticktock: Kevin's right. I'm sorry for going too far with my comments. It's just that my experience in L.A. has taught me that people here tend to achieve more success on the same basis that they achieve success in the tv and movie industry: the lightness of their skin. It's not the obvious kind of discrimination where people of color are denied opportunity, but it takes longer for everyone who doesn't automatically meet the Aryan profile to get discovered. (Oh, and the whiter your surname, the more likely you will get ahead, too, I'm afraid.)
Unfortunately, this has just exacerbated the race division by adding a class division as well. So those who are better off tend to frown on people who aren't so; and they tend to embrace the more successful lifestyle, and everything it represents, as well. So, because Barack is "urban", he tends to come off less sophisticated to that group than a W.A.S.P. socialite like Hillary. Yes, we're that shallow here, which is why an idiot like Arnold can win the office of Governor against 100 other candidates. His English is ten times worse than anyone else's Ebonics, but because he can blend in better with socialites than 50 Cent, he's considered the classier of the pair.
Anyway, I appreciate you comin' out for Obama, and I hope that our combined effort can be used to tear down these stupid social barriers in the future. I'm actually an Asian culture-phile, but I have a problem with yuppies of any color-especially the ones who forget their roots. Once again, I'm sorry to hurt your feelings, and I didn't mean it. I'm just railing against people who sell out, because that's happened once too often in my generation, which is why we're in this mess in the first place. I hope we can both create a world where people with humble backgrounds get the same respect as people who managed to get a short-cut through life.
uncle joe mccarthy @ 92:
Already, we are seeing racist, anti-Hispanic sentiments by Obama's followers seeking revenge for Obama's loss of California.
The GOP is doomed @ 95:
Jut as long as there is a vote in November. The chimp might still have a little crazy left in him...
McCain Confirms It: A Vote for Him Is a Vote for a Third Bush Term

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
DNC Press
Washington, DC - During appearances on Fox News Sunday and CBS's Face the Nation, John McCain made it clear: a vote for him is a vote for a third Bush term. Echoing his earlier statement that we could be in Iraq for 100 years, he said again that he would continue Bush's never ending civil war in Iraq. "We have to take care of the world's security," McCain said.
"The choice between the Democrats and Republicans couldn't be more clear. A vote for John McCain is a vote for a third Bush term with a never ending war in Iraq and an economy that favors those at the top. A vote for a Democrat is a vote to bring our troops home from Iraq, for an economy that works for all Americans, and a return to America's priorities," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Stacie Paxton.
McCain: A Third Bush Term
"They want to have the government run the health care system in America. I want the private sector to do it. On the issue of national security policy, there are very sharp differences... They want to withdraw from Iraq and if we do that al Qaeda wins." [Face the Nation, 2/3/2008]
"I have a strong conservative record and I'm proud of that record and I also believe on the national security side it's going to be a clear difference between me and Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. A clear difference on whether we're going to increase spending or decrease spending, increase taxes or decrease taxes, whether we're going to withdraw from Iraq or we're going to see this thing through to the success." [Fox News Sunday, 2/3/2008]
McCain's 100 Year War in Iraq: "We have to take care of the world's security"
"...This strategy is succeeding. Ad I believe that if we had set a date for withdrawal or if we do set a date for withdrawal, al Qaeda will then win and we'll see chaos and genocide in the region. That's another significant difference that Senator Clinton and I have...and I look forward to discussing it. It's not a matter of how long Americans stay. It's a matter of American casualties. And those casualties are coming down and we can eliminate them. Look, we're in Kuwait right next door to Iraq. We're in turkey. We're in Bosnia. We're all over the world. One of the obligations, unfortunately, of being a great superpower is that we have to take care of the world's security." [Fox News Sunday, 2/3/2008]
McCain: More of the Same Bush Supreme Court
"I would appoint justices such as the ones I've strongly supported and gotten through the Senate with the help of many others or help along with others. Only those who strictly interpret the constitution of the United States and do not legislate from the bench... If you have justices that have a clear, conservative, a clear, strict interpretation of the constitution of the United States, then you don't have to worry about what their decisions will be." [Fox News Sunday, 2/3/2008]

California isn't a winner-take-all state, so the break-down does matter. 2:00 a.m. talking heads are talking about JFK and the south. Gimme a break.
three quarters of all the ballots cast are still to be counted...hillary's lead is dwindling.

The Hillary-hate is thick out here tonight.
What have the Clintons done to deserve it?
Win.
The White House.
Twice.
Bill is the only Democrat to win two terms since FDR.
Democrats won tonight.
Democrats will win in November.

The OVP is studying Pakistan as a test run.
Nick @ 97:
More self-delusion among Obama supporters, who voice elitist pretensions thinking that they are better suited to lead the working classes that form the backbone of the Democratic Party. Go take your wine and cheese elsewhere and invite Ralph Nader to your party while you're at it.
Thing Fish @ 100:
If there is anyone that will unite the broken and dysfunctional Republican Party- it's Hillary. Her negative numbers are absolutely obscene and she is universally hated by the Right (which is strange considering she is about as Neo-Con as they come). Even a terrible candidate like McCain would have a shot.
Technicly Kennedy/Johnson administration won 2 terms...
And Billary had a chance to reform healthcare once, they had the Dem congress and they didnt do it.
They also drewback on affirmative action, welfare, and social programs.
Sean @ 5:
What? Hillary just read off of a piece of paper. What's the difference? Obama seems authentic to me. We need to stop distracting ourselves with trivial matters. I don't have a lot of faith in Hillary delivering all of these promises because her husband made all of them as well and was a complete sell-out. He didn't pass any key progressive legislation and Hillary's only involvement in trying to construct and push something failed miserably and she has since caved to drug company cash. She was wrong on the war and continues to make head-scratching votes on foreign policy (designating the Iranian army a terrorist organization, etc.).
I don't know if Obama will come through on his promise to overcome divisiveness and build a new progressive coalition- but I am willing to give him a shot. He is emphasizing the right things and hopefully he will use the powers of the presidency to really push a progressive agenda, with a democratic congress, beyond what he could run on in a general election. I just don't see Clinton dramatically diverging from the past Clinton administration. Sure, they balanced budgets, but where did they get the money to do so? The cuts in social programs during the Clinton administration were large enough to make conservatives proud. He was a great Republican president. I never understood why they hate him so much- even before the Monica stuff.
We need to turn the page people and look to a hopeful future! Obama just may be a transformative figure. I am pretty certain Hillary Clinton is not.
"If there is anyone that will unite the broken and dysfunctional Republican Party- it’s Hillary. "
Correct. Hillary is the medicine the right wing needs and would love to have.
Why did some 75% of latino voters go for Clinton?
another 5 percent return, another percentage point to obama (37%), at that rate he would not win, unless more than two thirds of the remaining ballots are for him, which although it could still happen, seems less and less likely...I think I'll wait a few hours and check back.
Guy Fawkes,
Where are you getting your numbers for the Bay Area? Marin is in, but like you say, they don't carry much weight.
The Secretary of State at 10:41 sees:
Alameda: 0%
San Mateo: 0%
San Francisco: 0%
Marin: 71.5% = 52.9 O. / 39.8 C
Statewide it is 54.6 C. / 34.3 O. at a, wait for it... whopping 25.3% of the vote in.
"Why did some 75% of latino voters go for Clinton?"
A lot of latinos are actually pretty conservative.
Guy Fawkes @ 106:
Working Class? Give me a break....The Clintons were personally responsible NAFTA which was permanently damaging to the working class. Or how about the whole Hillary Heath Care program that sought real single-payer universal health care system before being bought out by the corporate lobbies? Or the fact that Clintons have taken obscene amounts of corporate money especially in regards to health care and drug companies.
There is no working class party in American, a legitimate working class party would style itself after the European Social Democrat parties. Dennis Kucinich was the best thing we had going before he dropped, but Obama is the lesser of all evils.
Kucinich was the best lamest thing you had going thank god he dropped out
Why are we Democrats always falling for this Right Wing SPIN when it comes to ELECTABILITY regarding our two Democratic Nominees?
"Hillary has too many negatives, BLAH BLAH BLAH...JAZZ JAZZ etc.
The Repub DOMINATED MEDIA TELLS YOU THIS.. Duh..So it must true eh?
They say if Hillary is nominated, that would UNITE the GOP to fight against you. Duh..So you should chicken out and wave the white flag and let them DICTATE TO YOU who you should pick to face them right? What kind of logic is that?
A lot of very intelligent Dems unfortunately right now seem to be have their "heads in the clouds" most of the time, instead of examining issues with heads firmly on their shoulders.
There's is NOTHING NEW they can through against Hillary and THEY KNOW IT.
I have nothing against Barrack. I think he is very intelligent and full of potential. However I think his time is not yet ripe to face the GOP in a GENERAL ELECTION. You may not want to hear this but he will provide FERTILE GROUND for the REPUB spin machine. They will chew him to pieces if he is the Nominee.
THEY OWN THE BULK OF THIS MEDIA that is giving him this glaringly obvious "We love You" press right now. It is with GOOD REASON they are doing this FOR NOW...yes FOR NOW.
"Working Class? Give me a break….The Clintons were personally responsible NAFTA"
Very true. The Clintons very guilty for killing the blue collar in this country.

I just can't help myself...
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, February 1) -- President Bill Clinton unveiled his budget for fiscal year 2000 Monday, formally sending Congress a $1.77 trillion spending plan that proposes using the new century's forecasted record budget surpluses to shore up Social Security and increase domestic spending.
The president's formal release of his budget proposal is the opening salvo in what promises to be a fierce battle with Capitol Hill over how to use the burgeoning budget surplus. While many Republicans have been pushing to use the money for an across-the-board tax cut, Clinton urged setting most of it aside for the Social Security and Medicare programs.
frudger @ 116:
And why is that? Did the corporate media tell you that?
This is what I'm talking about in regards to America's pseudo-left. They have no clue about the goals of a working class party.
Hillary is
A. Not a Democrat
and
B. Not Electable vs. the Rethugs
Sorry,
A vote for hillary is a vote for McCain.
Here's a pretty good page for a county rundown of votes in this primary.

If you answer my question, I'll answer yours.
Why did 82% of African Americans vote for Barrack Obama?
zeta @ 111:
Name recognition from the better economic times under Bill Clinton. And his being the first president to have Latino Cabinet members (2). Also Hillary Clinton got early endorsements from Latino leaders. (Summary of LA Times Opinion article.)
Hillary Clinton is not a Democrat?
Wonders never cease when you have passionate followers who can turn reality to fiction.
Phil @ 121:
Correct.

You didnt help yourself to anything. Billary didnt reform anything for the better. They panderd for votes and thats it. They lost the Senate and the Congress. They passed NAFTA and put people out of work. They failed at reforming healthcare. If you wanna vote for em go ahead. We have a word for people like you: SUCKERS
Ok. Now answer MY QUESTION about Barrack.
nick @97
i am a high school graduate who worked for over 40 years raised 4 children and retired from a management position on a national railroad. i follow politics and read quite a bit. i am a clinton supporter and proud of it. as far as education goes i have worked with collage grads who could not tie their shoelaces. so please do judge people by their education but by what they do with it.
Don't need to rude.
This is supposed to be an intelligent discussion.
Helen ,
I am with you on that absolutely!

You should be voting for Barack, he will be helping out workers a lot more. Period.
Kucinich couldn't win a swing state if his life depended on it.
no one wants to a comical looking pacifist nome to be president.
helen kenney @ 129:
I'm sure you're a intelligent and successful woman. All I'm suggesting is that she is not a progressive candidate that will not represent the interest of the working class.
The arguments about Clinton vs Obama would be amusing if they weren't so sad and uninformed. It seems neither of you lot can form a cogent thought about the other candidate without relying on right-wing spin points. The same right-wing, I might remind you, whose popularity has all the boyancy of a brick these days.
Attention Hillary haters. Hillary isn't a neo-con. She's at least as liberal as Obama.
Attention Obama haters. Obama isn't elitist or racist, nor is he inexperienced.
Both of them would be strong, capable candidates. Either would shred any of the GOPers in a debate. Both have stood up to Faux "News" and *won*.
I was going to vote for Edwards. When he dropped out, I ended up voting for Obama. But if Clinton gets the nomination, I'll be able to vote for her proudly. Either one would be an excellent president.
WHO voted for War Mongerer mccain?
He spent ZERO (0) dollars on tv ads in CA, yet swept...what changed between the initial debates held in southern CA and today?
"I’m sure you’re a intelligent and successful woman. All I’m suggesting is that she is not a progressive candidate that will not represent the interest of the working class."
Right.
Clinton being good for the working class is part of a popular narrative and also a myth.
So you should chicken out and wave the white flag and let them DICTATE TO YOU who you should pick to face them right? What kind of logic is that?
The kind that doesn't want another Republican to be taking the oath of office on January 20, 2009. But if you pick a candidate that becomes a lightning rod (and don't kid yourself, every pissant non-scandal that ever happened in the Clinton White House will be dredged up by the Republican Noise Machine and saturated on the media), then don't be surprised when it gets hit with a bolt.
When your enemies and your friends are giving you the same advice, maybe it's worth listening to. Hillary has not done well pulling in Independents and disaffected Republicans - and Democrats can't win in the general election without some crossover.
And don't talk to me like I'm five. It's patronizing and insulting.
frudger @ 133:
You're correct in one sense, he was a candidate that lacked broad electability. However, he had a superior grasp on the policy issues that define a progressive candidate. EX. The only candidate that demanded a single-payer universal health care system. The only candidate the promised a immediate end to the military industrial complex and the Iraq War.
Boo! Hillarity; chickenhawk, husbantry pawn and more conservative than Mittens and crazy fuck-up Hukcleberry combined!!!!.. WTF are Latinos and Asians thinking in CA? A pox on all of your driving habits! What a bunch of lap dogs; almost as bad as the Clintosaurs. Good job folks, swing for the candidate that you "know" but also the candidate that won't do shit for you! Good luck and good night California's majority, so much for the progressive state and so much for what might have made it "progressive". Fucking morons!
Phil @ 137:
Phil, I agree with you. Reread my comment.

Couldnt have said it better myself!
Lying ass cheating ass bastards
What it comes down to for me is this...
Obama had the intellect to see voting for the Iraq war from the start was a bad idea. Hillary didn't. She voted for it then tried to backpedal with the bullshit excuse that 'she didn't know Bush would invade Iraq.' The fucking resolution was called "Authorization for Military Action in Iraq." So as far as I'm concerned, that clinched it for me. Yes, Hillary has done good things in the past. But when it came to possibly the most important issue of our lifetimes, Obama got it right "from day one." Hillary didn't. And the fact Democrats who claim to want change and out of Iraq voted for a woman who not only switched her position on withdrawal from Iraq not two months ago, but voted for the war in the first place (and has yet to say it was a mistake/bad judgment), just blows my mind. I would've thought you people had more sense than that.
el @ 144:
That pretty much sums it up for me.
I will strongly support either, or rather any, Democratic nominee. But comments like "Hillary or Obama would shred McCain in a debate" are pointless. So what? Kerry wiped the floor with Bush on the facts and logic in debates. FACTS AND REASON DON'T WIN ELECTIONS. Bush was elected because he portrayed himself as an "Average American" that you'd like to have a beer with, correctly concluding that the vast majoriy of Americans use their brains for about 1% of their decisions, and gut feelings for 99% of it. Hillary comes across as, and is portrayed in the media as: cold, elitist, and arrogant. Whereas John McCain comes across as, and is portrayed as, grandfatherly, protective, and moderate. McCain is the perfect Anybody But Clinton candidate, which is why he's winning the vote to be nominated! Most republicans don't like him, but he's the only one who polls well against Clinton, and he's just "moderate" enough for a majority of independents to decide: Yeah, I can vote for McCain..." That's where it is, folks. I want to be wrong, but I'm not.
Peter G @ 40:
Oh no, not at all. Unfortunately we are discussing this as being a race issue....but the fact remains that a large portion of the asian and hispanic community have the similar feelings towards black Americans as your typical white racist. Racism is not owned by white people...
Lots of presentations and blogs have touched on this....it will become more prevalent if Obama gets the nod. The media will portray the Democratic party as in turmoil etc because Obama is black and not all Democrats are actually liberal.
Abby @ 125:
Yeah.....she is a democrat. in. name. only.
If you can differentiate Hillary from your typical Republican like McCain I would love to see it.
pls, vote us:

38 percent for obama...still some significant counties not yet reporting returns, obama has won san francisco with 77 percent reporting, he's got over 52 percent to hillarys 44 percent. If the bay area goes as SF did, this thing could still turn around.
TOO CLOSE TO CALL IMHO
