Why is the media asking Tom Delay on TV to give his opinions about anything? Didn't he resign in disgrace?
Even still, the corruption indicted former House Speaker, who rallied his power by gerrymandering Texas to death has a few words of advice for the presumptive Republican nominee, John McCain: You don't need to change, but if you want my base, well, you need to change.
GS: Is there leeway there that conservatives are willing to give Senator McCain in order to make sure that he doesn’t lose the independents and the moderates he needs to win the White House?
TD: Sure, they’re not….I don’t think they’re demanding that he change in his position. They’re just demanding that if they…if you want us to work for you, if you want us to come out and vote for you instead of just voting against the Democrat, then you’ve got to answer some of these problems. Sure, I mean, you had conservatives supporting Rudy Giuliani, with his record on the social issues, they forgave him for those and I think they’ll do that. It is attitude and, and understanding that in order to put together a winning coalition, you’ve got to have a winning coalition. You can’t just have certain groups. What’s happening in the Republican party right now is they’re trying to find ourselves. We’re trying to define the party again. And he as the leader of the party needs to act like a leader and pull people together.

No matter how tarnished a Republican is, the Corporate Media will always rehabilitate them and thrust them in the public eye. They're like vampires rising from the dead. Tom Delay could be caught red-handed ripping the head off a baby and he'd still get to go on ABC and MSNBC unchallenged.

I know this is off-topic, but I was wondering if anyone knows any good links to sites that are comparing the actual platforms of all (esp. Democratic) nominees for president. Someone was asking me today just what I liked about Obama, and I started realizing I've never really seen any nominee's actual positions enumerated anywhere. Just a bunch of crap about "likability," haircuts and flag pins, facial expressions or body language, and remarks taken out of context. Anyone?

This very site (I think) posted a link to a really great issues site back in October or November, but now I can't remember the name of it. At the site, you ranked your most important priorities, then the site would show you which candidates came closest to your takes on these issues. It was really helpful. Can anybody else remember this? Sorry to be so vague.

I support Obama, but when challenged, couldn't be specific about why, so I was trying to make sure I can offer a more educated response next time. (Same thing happened to me about Kucinich, who I actually truly liked most, even though I knew his odds were astronomical at best -- yet I couldn't explain why, other than to say he was a Vegan and was serious about animal rights issues.) I'd actually be quite satisfied with either Clinton or Obama in the White House, but I just want to know specifically where they stand vis-a-vis each other. I find that debates aren't terribly reliable for this, since I never feel like the questions were fully (or at all) answered.
I agree, I don't know why people still think DeLay is relevant enough to warrant TV time (I don't see people banging on Denny Hastert's door and he actually was Speaker, even if he was Delay's sock puppet), but I don't mind him one bit. Him being high profile helps us, because DeLay is the ugly face of the GOP personified. There's a reason why he never became Speaker. The more he is out front, the worse off the GOP looks.

Try www.ontheissues.org They have a summary of voting records with respect to specific issues "gun control" "abortion" ect., quotes from the candidates relating to different issues, and summaries of their platforms (how/why they feel a certain way, ect.). The website has been along for a very long time, and I think it's pretty reliable. The candidates also each have their own websites, and voting records are public...but the first link is probably the easiest/best if you just want to quickly compare the two.

Tom DeLay is the perfect example of the core problem with corruption, complicity, political connections that are with the Americas leadership, political and corporate. This is a basic cultural rotten area socially merited with million dollar bonus money, used and abused, right out of the electromagnetic public spectrum, the public domain, the commonwealth asset that has been exploited for decades by these politicians, and corporate heads. A government operation that is supposedly addressed to the public domain, but totally corrupt beyond limits and time funneling huge amounts of money for the rich and powerful.
In many respects a layer of accustomed wealth designed to support the same sort of untouchable political positions, shielded by Judicial cherry picking that abuse the law because of friendship or favor, completely ignoring the Constitution with benefits that are absolutely undeniably retirement funds for crimes that are buried, or lies and cover ups. Yet, obviously doing well among our capitalistic system. Constantly slapping the public in the face, mostly all done, ironically by professionals, the greater portions that are college educated men and women who have been well trained in the skills to simply twist the context of ideas.
So, here, America has a poisoned society at the top and needless to describe a sad state of domestic affairs at the bottom, with the less merited working population littered with domestic crimes, robbery, murder, and a diminished sense Samaritan-ship greases the slide of our moral authority. Having Tom Delay on to discuss politics is a lot like having Ted Bundy on to discuss hitch-hiking.
The Texas DA, Ronnie Earle, who was prosecuting Delay, announced his retirement last fall. So far, it seems only Dems are lining up for the job; just hope the one who gets it has the guts to get the job done. One reason Earle has credibility is that he prosecuted both parties, even though he is a Democrat. Isn't that always the case, you get one of your guys as an umpire and he decides to be fair.
Do politicians go to special classes to learn how to talk in circles like that, or is it just that people who talk in circles get elected more often because they sound like politicians?
Who the hell cares what DeLay thinks? Or Colin Powell? Or David Broder, or Cokie Roberts or George Will or any of the establishment talkers? They sit around having a circle jerk, agreeing, complimenting each other and they are all full of it.
