Clinton is not hearing 'voices from beyond'
I get alerts from ABC News via email, and one hit my inbox this afternoon with this subject line: “Clinton Hears Voices from Beyond: ‘Keep Going’.”
Naturally, given that ABC News’ headline suggested that a leading presidential candidate was hearing voices in her head, I was curious what on Earth the report (which had the same headline as my email subject line) actually said. Wouldn’t you know it, Hillary Clinton is not delusional.
ABC News’ Eloise Harper and Kate Snow Report: In McAllen, Texas this morning Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., said she wasn’t giving up on her race for the White House.
Speaking about her work in South Texas as an organizer for George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, Clinton said two strong Texas women inspired her — Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and Texas Governor Ann Richards.
Clinton said they taught her about courage and determination. Then she suggested that she is hearing from them even as her campaign struggles to compete after a string of losses.
“I can hear their voices saying, ‘You keep going! You give the people a real choice about the future!’” she said at a campaign event.
As Kevin Drum responded, “Look. I know that campaign coverage can get mighty dull and the search for something resembling actual news can get pretty desperate. But seriously, folks, this is what we professional writers call a ‘figure of speech.’ Hillary is not suggesting that she hears ‘voices from beyond.’ OK?”

Go Hillary!!!
Bit of a mendacious way of making you think she is as nutty as WPE.
I would imagine Hillary hears more voices from the past than from the future. I know alot of people hear those same voices. Thus why she is slipping. Just think what a CONgress would do right about now if someone in the WhiteHouse was having extramarital sex!
I think the voices were telling her to go toward the light.
She should take their advice.
What sort of headlines do you expect from ABC/Disney? After all, they are all about fairies, and witches and talking mice and the like....
Next it will say "you want fries with that?"
And Obama has a halo on his head but Hillary is schizophrenic.
The media is so screwed up...
And two weeks ago, a pundit from ABC bemoaned about how Bill Clinton said we need to change to renewable energy, even at the determent of the economy, which is a complete 180 from what he actually said.
The realistic headline would have been Hillary is inspired by voices from the past.
Did that headline writer used to work at the National Enquirer or something
pissed off patricia @ 10:
sounds like it
The odious bit here is that the current occupant of the Oval Office is on record as having had God tell him to invade Iraq:
Nabil Shaath says: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, "George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan." And I did, and then God would tell me, "George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …" And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East." And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

Of course, it didn't get a lot of US coverage outside of those nasty, foul mouthed bloggers.
Translation: Clinton believes that Jordan and Richards were weightlifters.
Translation: Clinton lies about having Jordan and Richards as teachers.
See, it's easy to mangle language to make up a false story.

this is going to get ugly. shes getting desperate.
Within hours Fox News will have it where she is not only hearing voices but she is seeing things and is going to need a Exorcism to get the evil out of her.

You know I'm an Obama fan... but I promise you, the media and people count Hillary out before she EVER is. People need to get it through their heads to ignore the MSM narrative. Both when it agrees with you, and when it disagrees with you. They're pulling at straws, we need to get the best candidate in their.
Yeah, Bush is the one who hears voices in his head...
Problem is this whole time Bush has thought it was the voice of God...its not.
Clintons enemies are going all out to knock her out of the race as quickly as possible.
At least in the minds and eyeballs of viewers and listeners.
Makes me wonder just who in the lush upper level penthouse executive suites are sending orders down to the underlings on the lower floors below who put this stuff out?
Total CRAZINESS.
L.A. Confidential @ 20:
I hear my late brother's voice every day. Here I thought I was keeping a small part of him alive by keeping his words in the back of my mind and measuring my actions against them. I never realized I was delusional.
uh, Mark @ 15? What's your beef with Mike @ News Corpse. He's not trying to make up a B.S. story. He's illustrating how easy it is to make up a B.S. story if you don't care about honesty in reporting...
If you actually want to believe the B.S. "Hillary hears voices" narrative, then never mind, your gripe makes sense...in that completely nonsensical way Fox News fan own.
Blue Lensman @ 21:
Sorry... MIKE @15, and Mark @ News Corpse. Can't copy and paste on my Moto Q & my short term memory is shot.
Imagine what they have in store for Obama if he wins. His lack of executive experience, his drug use, smoking, questionable real estate deals, his muslim heritage, not having served in the military, his unstable family background.
The Right Wing Media is going to go berserk.
This is what we get when 6 guys mostly on the wrong side own the media in this country.
I'm hearing those voices too ... they're saying that if Hillary is the party's nominee then it's time to vote Libertarian, or the Green Party, or ...
McCain may be Bush on steroids, but Hillary is certainly Bush Lite.
L.A. Confidential @ 24:
Mark Halperin, but I wonder who sets his agenda..
An interesting observation I made today: I spoke to a young (and might I add very pretty) black girl from Chicago today, and I had to bring up the subject of politics to her and see where she stood. I knew that by throwing our very own Barack Obama out there she had to comment, and without saying who she would be voting for it was clear to me it was Hillary.
An interesting dynamic. It seems women voters are keeping Hillary afloat, but also alot of low income earners. Who think she might actually achieve something tangible in their lives by actually helping them. If Obama can convince that demographic he can match words to action Hillary is toast

L.A. Confidential @ 26:
It's amazing how Bush has gotten almost no real mainstream media attention. No ,probing looks into secret energy deals, not even a mention of Bush going aWol and Cheney getting his deferrments to a war in Vietnam yet repeating that terrible mistake in Iraq.
And on and on and on....
Hey, if Hillary really can channel the spirit of Barbara Jordan, then I may vote for her (in May, when Oregon finally has its primary). Barbara Jordan would have made a great President. She knew and respected the U.S. Constitution as much as any national politician in my lifetime.
MR. Bill @ 12:
Bush may have said it but he's not "ON RECORD as having had God tell him to invade Iraq". There's no "record" of him having said that and he never admitted saying it. Someone said he said it and his press secretary denied that he said it.
In her daydreams she's in the same league as Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan. Would that either of them were still here to run for president.
odanny @ 29:
He's going to have to watch it. If he makes promises he can't keep it's not going to be good.
Of course at this point saying anything if it gets the win for a Dem is probably our best hope. Once they get in then they can rip into these bastards who screwed America. And thats a slippery slope also. The Kennedys are an example of that.
odanny @ 31:
Yes. It is astounding they have been able to get away with what they have.
Richard @ 33:
Yes, I'm sure you should believe Bush's press secretary. After all, its not like he's paid to lie...
Oh, I'm sorry, according to his press secretary's book, yes, he is paid to lie.
Why do you figure Bush deserve's your defense?
No doubt Drudge is going to pick up on this and post some bullshit about Hillary being into the occult.
Old Billy @ 37:
Or perhaps you are just particular about the grammar of "on the record." Ir-regardless, Bush is a delusional criminal.
L.A. Confidential @ 20:
Hillary is republican light. What's your fascination with her anyway? Did she promise to give you a BJ? lol Seriously, what gives?
Roger @ 38:
She isn't?
I thought all those first ladies were into the occult. Isn't Barbara into voodoo? Or is the bone through her nose just my imagination?
I have an intense dislike for all things Klinton and by just looking at Hillary and hearing her speak any sane individual can easily determine that she is a psychopath and liar.
But what of Bush claiming that his god spoke to him and told him to attack Iraq, so he did. Where was ABC for this little bombshell proving once and for all that 'W' is batshit crazy insane.
Double standard? Or, does god speak only to these people because he just hasn't any other friends?
Barbara Jordan would have showed up for that FISA vote, and campaigned on it. Of that you may be damn sure.
L.A. Confidential @ 35:
If HRC does manage to become our next president, I honestly don't believe much will change. None of those who have screwed the country will be held accountable, because she's been one of them. She's not about to reverse the tight control of Bush Administration executive privilege, that privilege Bush has claimed and used as power, because let's face it, the Clintons LIKE power. Nothing will change.
christ
bush has been listening a voice in his head for years, he calls it god.
we all know it's call alcohol as in a drunk.
and bush also listens to roberts who claims to talk to god, another voice in his
empty fucking head.
give me a break, these bastards are all on jesus juice
Shame on U.S. @ 42:
Maybe ABC is just more comfortable with the idea of a supernatural being who is pals with GW than one who is like Ann Richards.
nohobear @ 34:
Hillary would make a good President. She's not just a dull old chick standing there lifelessly in a empty suit. She has drive, energy, attitude, doesn't lie about who she is, and a lot of experience in Government as well as having been First Lady for eight years. And wants to be President.
The main negative is people thinking Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton and the dynasty fear.
And compare that with the dull I could care less phony Bush 2000 campaign.
This Clinton tactic is pure Bush Lite.
She also said on 60 Minutes, and I'm paraphrasing, 'If you believe there is any possibility that you can lose, then you are not optimistic and confident enough to be a leader.' She went on to insist that she sees no possible way she can lose the election. Is she off her rocker? probably.
What do you think about her not showing up to the FISA vote?
Monica Lewinsky @ 40:
No the Clintons sent lots of liquidity and icentives our way at the cons expense. And other benefits.

No problem. I just wish he would lighten up on the Hillary bashing a bit. So we can retain some sanity in the Democratic party.
If Hillary becomes President she wants to become the first woman President and blaze a trail of success, a legacy the polar opposite of her predecessor.
If Obama becomes President he want to become the first African American Pres. and blaze a "........."

damn, thank god someone clarified that for us-- i would hate to think that hillary was hearing voices-- or that someone was helping to spread rumors about this . . . it's also good to know that our bloggers are using time honored means of gathering the cold hard facts . . . like abc news alerts-- ;)
i bet if she were in florida, it would have been two strong florida women who inspired her. if she was in ohio, it would have been two strong ohio women.
hillary will say anything and change nothing.
Old Billy @ 39:
Not defending Bush at all. He very well may have said it. And , in any case, he got us into a crazed and horrid war. Just pointing out that it's not "on the record" that he said it.
Richard @ 65:
A little pet peave, I suppose? (like irregardless for me)
Wow, you people sure are hypersensitive. The article literally repeated a truncated quote of hers as the headline. How truly terrible. Grasp at straws much?
I don't think ABC is actually trying to make you believe that Hillary hears voices in her head, it's just a headline to grab your attention and get you to visit their website and read the story so they can sell advertising.
Boy obama supporters must be really crapping themselves. Only a few delegates separate these two candidates so why in the world would either one of them give up. I suppose the cult is hoping she will because they are so damn afraid she is going to win. AND with the states she is ahead in, and the lawsuit that is being proposed by a LARGE GROUP OF BLACK SUPPORTERS, she will probably get Michigan and Florida.
Also I heard a rumor that a lawsuit is in the works about Iowa. They said they know there is no way they are going to protest the vote, they are going to protest the voters. They want the registration of the out of state students. Then if they find they were not legal or voted in their home state, they want the federal government to prosecute THEM. They said that in this case you can't hold obama responsible, he didn't personally check each voter and it was not his business to check the voters. But the voters themselves knew they were illegal and that's what is being checked. coulter got away with voter fraud but they won't let these people get by.
It is a misleading headline, and at the very least has a dangling participle: from beyond what?
Old Billy @ 66:
Or "peave." :-)
I guess it is alright if Nancy Reagan consults astrology to determine former Prez Reagan's decision. And Prez Georgie W. Bushie always speaks to God for divine help and blessing. But when Hillary listens to inner voices she is a crazy woman. Typical mainstream media make believe new. Hopefully, ABC will fire these two assinine brainless reporters.

This is great news I hope that every state where republicans illegally cross voted, we will see investigations and prosecutions! I'm sick of Republican staffers always winning by cheating (stop the vote republicans staffers in Florida, black box voting and taking advantage of an Iowa college studant law). And the list goes on and on.
Get after the truth so that we can trust again.
But you will hear for at least the next five years about how Hillary hears voices.
If this article was about, say, McCain, I can almost guarantee you guys would be laughing it up with ABC. "Hearing voices?! Oh, God, is he sure it's not the Viet Cong?"
Huckabee's response:
"She's a wiiiiiitch!"
Marge @ 69:
Sweet. The tired old cult meme back in play from a Clinton supporter. How very surprising.
Julian Bond is complaining about the Michigan and Florida delegates but the "proposed lawsuit" is just blogosphere rumors that lack any reality. And if you want to prove some reality then feel free to do so besides the random "I hear a rumor" crap. The point that Julian Bond should really be responding to is why the NAACP decided not to complain about the Michigan and Florida problems until February 8th, well after the sanctions were imposed and everyone knew that the DNC was going to enforce the rules. Why was Julian Bond silent for months? Also, why did Julian Bond draft the letter on the 8th of Feb without telling the NAACP's board that he was drafting such a letter? The NAACP had a chance to speak up before the primary mess back when the rules were being broken but they stayed silent.
Let's let Michigan and Florida break the rules, then agree that rules were broken, then decide that the rules don't apply because they help our camp. Why should Obama be punished for following the rules and not having his name on the ballot in Michigan? Apparently it's true that rules are made to be broken.
L.A. Confidential @ 50:
Correction: Bill did. Hillary just happened to be his wife at the time. A lot of people are essentially voting for Hillary because they think the economic prosperity of the 90s had anything to do with "the Clintons". As if once any Clinton is back in power everything will fall into place and the damage done over the last 7 years will just work itself out. Times change. Let's not forget Cheney's interview post 1991 Gulf War regarding the toppling of Saddam and his opinion in 2001. People's agendas change.
Also, the fact that of all the problems out there, gas prices are the only thing that is of concern to you speaks volumes. That's it? Gas prices? The country is falling apart and all you care about are gas prices. Nicely done.
Why are you swimming in shallow water?
By the way, your oil barrel figure isn't quiet accurate. Here's a graph. $11 was the lowest it was, certainly not the average:

I guess this is about as positive as we can expect about Hillary on here.
Let's not discuss Joe Wilson slamming O.B. and endorsing her.
Let's not discuss Julian Bond, prez of the NAACP, calling for the Fla. and Mich. delegates to be seated at the convention.
Marc @ 52:
Pretty f-ing funny!
loubie @ 84:
How about discussing why Julian Bond waited until Feb 8th to complain about the situation in Florida and Michigan, which was after the mess was made? How about discussing why he failed to consult with the NAACP's board when he decided to draft his letter?
Or why a judge threw out the lawsuit that Sen. Bill Nelson attempted and pointed out that the DNC has the right to set its schedule for primaries and the party has the right to enforce its rules? If we need an overview - http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2007-12-05-florida-pr...
Oh for fuck's sake, the republican moles are here to bash Hillary. Didn't you get the memo...NO MORE DEM ON DEM VIOLENCE! If you want me to vote for Obama, sell me on him. I swear, it's like going to a Toyota dealership and being told how shitty Hondas are 24/7. OY!

Roark77 @ 86:
Well, how 'BOUT discussing and dissecting it? It seems that every headline that may seem to favor Hillary is discarded. Here. On many other liberal blogs. Definitely by the MSM.
I don't see Bond's timing as an issue. And I don't quite get where a political party gets off by controlling what states do. Or PUNISHING voters who will have a loud final say in November. God help us if Iowa and New Hampshire don't get to set the tone for our most important decision as a nation every single time.
I've been flagged today already for offering too much information. I'm trying to just watch.
But I'll tell ya -- it's very cool to see more Hillary people on the site. I'm relatively new, but I've noticed a one-sidedness to things.
Strawberrybitch @ 87:
Why is it that anytime someone criticizes or questions Clinton, they automatically become a "republican mole?" There can never be any sort of debate or discussion because the Clinton supporters either cry foul and claim "republican mole" or they cry foul and scream "misogyny."
Roark77 @ 90:
It's not what you say but how you say it. Pull back the fangs....and that goes for pro Hillary folks as well.
I guess HRC won New Mexico.and is lookin strong in Texas and Ohio, but Obamas numbers are getting better.

Hillary and Voices
Interestingly, when Houston suggested that Mrs. Clinton have a conversation with Jesus Christ, the first lady declined saying that it would be "too personal" ("Methodist Bishop defends Mrs. Clinton's talks with deceased leaders," Expression, August 1996, p. 8). Incredibly, the United Methodist Bishop of Arkansas, Richard Wilke, endorsed Mrs. Clinton's involvement with necromancy, saying, "I think it's marvelous that she's having experiences like this, "
Democrats have A.D.D. when it comes to the clintons
Hey, Texas and Ohio - understand this, Hillary refused to sign a pledge to restore our Constitution. This is not a hate message, just simple fact. Read it here:
http://www.reuters.com/article/blogBurst/politics?type=politicsNews&w1=B...
Her health care plan will not work. You cannot mandate self-pay for people with little or no income. How does she plan for this?
She supports NAFTA, which has cost American jobs, but was passed by her husband, Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton was a believer in a new "North American Union" of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. It would effectively gut our constitution. Does she favor this?
How does she feel about the spying being done? What is her stand?
Real issues, real questions.
So, she and Obama do have differences, regardless of what the media tries to say.
Billy Bob @ 99:
But Obama is happy to take their endorsements, no? Kathleen Sebelius, governor of red Kansas. Daschle, big-time DLC, supporting Obama and getting his power structure behind him. How about McCaskill, not DLC, but front and center wanting immunity for telecoms. Obama wants to have his DLC cake and eat it, too, as long as no one calls him out for stuffing his face with it.
Yes, I know, Hillary was in Texas during the vote, and miraculously, Obama voted against telecom. Yes, it's a miracle he voted, folks, knowing the score and just happening to be in DC that day. Say, speaking of DC, wasn't it Hillary who advocated strongly for DC to get the right to vote?
As for "voices from beyond," I remember the same ridiculous story going around about John Edwards because he used an example of a child who had died due to a defective product and she was speaking through him to the jury. The jury knew what he meant, everyone knows what he meant, but someone with too much Play-Doh on their hands turned it into a story that Edwards heard voices from beyond the grave.
Jeezus on a pogo stick, the crap never ends. Feh.
monica is a voice from beyond. so is norman hsu.
Whewn did misogyny become a national sport? I guess that the suffragettes speak out through women who vote now. That doesn't mean we are hearing their voices or answering them back. We are honoring their hard work. It's hard to be the only majority that does two times the work as many of our male counterparts for one-half of the pay. Do you all hate your mopthers also?
The whole notion is creepy and rather presumptuous if she isn't actually hearing the voices.
Billy Bob @ 93:
Guess it's only certain dead voices that get mocked because they're not praising the right candidate. The Kennedys sure tried to use their dead relations (& a King family one too) to promote their fave. Didn't help their fave where it counted but not for lack of trying. That headline sounds straight out of Weekly World News. Did HRC get some good news today? Is that the problem?
You know, a Hillary Presidency with Obama on deck is not that bad an alternative no matter how you slice it.
Harper and Snow are the kind of reporters that debase themselves with shit like this for whiff of fake validation from the old boys locker room. Who cares if they make it 100 times harder for women who want to get ahead on merit, earn their bones honestly and don't need to giggle for ass pats or head pats after polishing knobs, figuratively speaking.
I suppose they were in such a rush to "prove themselves" with this crap they didn't bother asking themselves if they'd print that Obama's hearing voices from beyond when he's channeling MLK and Gandhi's words (and misrepresenting their activism to fight their oppressors into "working with" their oppressors.)
bearclaw @ 32:
Indeed. I will never forget her voice and her commanding presence. Shirley Chisholm would have made a good one too.
Well, I don't know what's wrong with the Faux-Liberal Manichaean Cadre.
But I do know a Sharp Progressive Wonkette when I see one.
I also know when a Universal Health Care Plan is set out against a Universal For Kidz Only Health Care plan, the former is progressive, and the latter is a Timid Centrist Accomodationist Plan.
So, you know, those are the voices I'm listening to. They say, "Vote for the Sharp Wonkette, the Real Progressive Democrat. We're not voting for Prom King. We're not. Last time we weren't voting for Head Cheerleader, either. But he won. So be careful, people. Vote for the Sharp Wonkette."
I Think that I remember Bush saying that he hears God talking to him and telling him to invade Iraq. I think God is now talking to Hillary and telling her to get the heck out of there (Iraq).
It never ceases to amaze me what Clinton supporters manage to see as an attack on their candidate. Take a deep breath, think for a moment, and consider the possibility that the reporter was *gasp* using a figure of speech as well and wasn't at all trying to say that she literally hears voices.
I mean honestly, how many people do you really think would read that headline and take it literally? It's designed to be intriguing and get people to read the article, not to plant the idea that Hillary is a schizophrenic.
No Blood for Hubris @ 114:
That bump on your back was your change. You paid too much for Wonkette's service, 'cause none of it was sincere.
Even if it isn't true, if she'd simply said 'I hear God telling me to keep going'. she'd be fine. Other voices scream lunatic!
Ben @ 116:
You talk about Clinton Supporters? What Obama the "messianic" Obama supporters? One slight constructive criticism of Obama and you get abuse and scorn. You are sometimes even branded a racist by these people. Scary bunch. Blame it on IMMATURITY.
Abby @ 119:
Well I'd side with you on that one, but the truth is that I've seen many more Clinton supporters with a martyr complex than Obama supporters tossing around racism accusations (at least at Clinton supporters).
I do have to take issue with a couple points in your response though. The first is that it does not in any way respond to my statement about the headline. Is it or is it not at least as likely that it was supposed to be an attention grabber and was never intended to be taken literally? And the second is the whole "immaturity" thing being brought up again. If you want to scoff and look down at young voters who are finally showing an interest in the political process because their positions aren't always as refined, then that's your call. But it seems incredibly counterproductive in the long term to put down a substantial new voting block that's leaning towards supporting the Democratic Party. Personally I'm just thrilled that for the first time in my lifetime my friends actually know what's going on in politics without me having to explain it to them, even if they are a little abrasive at times.
Anyone who reads mainstream media without a dictionary, a grammar parser, complete and accurate transcripts of what was said at the event, a magnifying glass and a bull shit detector will soon wind up -- if they are not already -- crazier than an shit house rat.
Hot Damn!
Finally, a presidential race in which one of the candidates admits she doesn't listen to 'god'.
We ought to elect her twice just for that bit of honesty.
Alright. We know that 'hearing voices from beyond' is a figure of speech but why did that have to be the title? Honestly speaking, there are other available titles out there and this particular one does sound like Clinton really is hearing voices from beyond. It could be the work of all those shows and programs using the same line. Well, anyway, at least that was a bit of entertainment. By the way, I couldn't help but crack up on "Wouldn’t you know it, Hillary Clinton is not delusional."
It's not 'courage and determination' with Hillary. It's ego and blind ambition! She'll never concede and make it easier for anyone. You see, it's all about her. It's always all about her!

Call me crazy, but I suspect that the crowd that would look at that title and be inclined to think of it in literal terms is probably not going to be a bastion of Democratic support in November anyway. The phrasing may be a bit clunky, but to characterize it as a deliberate attack on Clinton is pretty silly I think.
Clinton is not hearing ‘voices from beyond’

Gotta be better than that Celine Dion pap she chose as a campaign song.
That was my pap smear for the day.
Bushy also heard voices, why isn't there anything referencing that in the news?
I don't think Hillary hears voices from beyond - but - if she did, I can think of no two finer individuals to hear from.
Barbara Jordan - Raised in a very poor neighborhood - had a speech impediment and learned to overcome both obstacles. She was a classy lady.
Ann Richards - Quite a classy lady and even though I did not always agree with her point of view - she had the right to her opinion. Look where she ended up. Gov. of Texas. Quite a feat.
