The sun does not tell them lies that affect their daily lives
I don't believe this. There is no way that 79% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth.
I heard they took the word "Gullible" out of the dictionary....
Shared Humanity @ 2:
Would those be the same people who believe that creationism should be taught as science?
By the way Americans shouldn't feel so bad about their celestial knowledge.

Here are the Top Ten Questions Pollsters Should Really Ask
I was listening to far-right Christian radio in the car and they say the media "propaganda machine" is going after bush and that he did not lie us into Iraq. He also said some bat s**t crazy stuff about God and the end of days. What an ego he must have to think that his religion is the only correct one and all others will be punished by a "just a loving" God. He also talked about invading Iran. I am not ruling out the existence of God, but these nut jobs are scaring me, and unfortunately they have influence. Maybe it's the folks who believe the sun revolved around the earth.
Also, it looks like satire. ;-) But still, I wouldn't be surprised if 30% of Americans did not know that the earth revolved around the sun.
If you told me 50%, I might believe it. 79%, I find that very hard to believe!
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of morons out there, but 79%?
The U.S. has had secret talks with Iran bankers.
The quote on the site is off. The blog that Daily Irrelevant quoted had it wrong and has since corrected itself almost a month ago (http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/12245)
In a recently released Harris Poll survey, 79% of American adults believe the sun revolves around the earth. I am not making this up.-> In a recently released Harris Poll survey, 21% of American adults believe the sun revolves around the earth. I am not making this up.
On a completely different topic, I'm wondering how the Obama supporters like the fact that their candidate is having a very steamy love affair with their guy right now?
Hell, nobody even mentions that he voted for immunity for the telecom companies and didn't even show up for the SCHIP vote.
Then again, nobody talks about the fact that after John McCain, he has missed the most in the Senate by far.
Oh well, I hope you like your media star!
Shared Humanity @ 2:
The real question here is how many Americans are dyslexic?
Whoever wrote http://weblog.sinteur.com/?p=21696 definitely is.
You don't have to believe me - go read it for yourself.
If you click on the "quote" link at the Daily Irrelevant, you go to The Smirking Chimp. Reading the comments there, someone corrected him on the 79% number, and he changed the statistic in his blogpost. http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/12245
In a recently released Harris Poll survey, 21% of American adults believe the sun revolves around the earth. I am not making this up.
Bluegal, your posting needs to be corrected.

Sorry to repeat you, John.

Excellent questions. Permit me to add another. Knowing what we know now (Bush, Quayle..etc), would you ever hire an employee who went to Yale and didn't receive a full academic scholarship?
More on the Lake Mead crisis.
I think this is a sarcastic thread.
It's about how few people don't trust the oil companies.
And they don't deserve our trust.
They try to say prices are set by some abstract future markets
But that's like what insurance companies and banks said trying to blame red-lining neighborhoods on back in the 70's.
21% believe Sun revolves around the Earth. It's assumed 79% believe Earth revolves around the Sun.
Wait... There are still people that believe the Sun revolves around the Earth?
Shared Humanity @ 2:
I have to agree, that is a load of crap. They must have surveyed people from the flat earth institute.
John @ 11:
If true then you're way ahead of the French.
George Bush, on the other hand, thinks everything revolves around him.
Where are all the Kucinich lovers who didn't want the MSM picking their candidate for them?
The media has picked Obama for you, happy now?

at least that is what my mom always tells me
Yeah, sun revolves around Jupiter, or is it the other way around.
WHEN DO WE VETT OBAMA?
Believe It @ 3:
HAHAHAHAHAHA
It's not satire. Apparently the guy who wrote the original post read the source numbers wrong. 79% of Americans believe the earth revolves around the Sun, not the other way around. Somehow two separate blogs haven't noticed that the original poster has since corrected it.
So, yeah, people aren't that ignorant here lol. In fact, the original Gallup poll claims Germans had similar numbers, for sake of comparison.
sounds like a Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner bit. "The sun revolves around the earth. No, it doesn't. The earth revolves around the sun. 9 out of 16 people revolve around the sun"......
Thing Fish @ 20:
NO. Nobody is that fucking stupid.
See http://www.gallup.com/poll/3742/New-Poll-Gauges-Americans-General-Knowle...
The entry does not correctly report the results of the poll.
Here is from gallup web site, copied and pasted in, with my quotation marks:
"Four out of Five Americans Know Earth Revolves Around Sun
Probing a more universal measure of knowledge, Gallup also asked the following basic science question, which has been used to indicate the level of public knowledge in two European countries in recent years: "As far as you know, does the earth revolve around the sun or does the sun revolve around the earth?" In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn't know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn't know.
The results below are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,016 adults, 18 years and older, conducted June 25-27, 1999. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95 percent confidence that the maximum error attributable to sampling and other random effects is plus or minus 3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls."
Thank you for the correction must appreciated - BG
Well of course the 25% knuckle-draggers believe the sun revolves around the Earth. No surprise there.
No they're just bats.
Believe It @ 3:
No it's still there, in the book title Gullible's Travels.
Take this off, or print a correction. You have it backwards. The poll says that 79% believe the EARTH revolves around the SUN, not vice versa. That still leaves alot of people (21%) who are confused, but perhaps--like you--by the question, not the fact. I know we like to feel that American ignorance explains just about everything we dislike about the current State of the Union. But don't let your prejudice cloud your judgment. You need to be suspicious of something as preposterous as the converse of what the poll actually proports. Otherwise in our own cynical way, we are no better than our irrational adversaries.
It is sad for me to see so many commenters jumping on this bandwagon, to revel in your misquote. Please fix this and hopefully it will serve as cautionary tale for all of us and our own propensity toward foolish self-righteousness and ignorant pride. I have to own up to my own glee at the shocking headline, but now feel pretty ashamed of my reaction.
It appears to me that aside from the general brain-washing and complete lack of "conceptual continuity" (as St. Frank would say), these people completely lack what they claim to have the most of!
Some Faith.
Faith in the scienific method that is.
Typical lizard brains.
Through everyday (and night) observations that we are all sensing, we can "feel" the motions of our (Earth's) movements through the Cosmos.
Apply some fairly simple plane geometry and I believe that my 5th grader can demonstate (scientifically) that the eartth is indeed orbiting the sun.
And since we base our technologies on just such mundane applications of repetitive observations ... I think I am going to opt for the process that works.
Engineering based on magical beliefs is not going to work here on the temporal plane.

You are caught up in the same Power Grab by the Federal Goverment that brought ruin to the Great American Peoples that existed on these lands well before The US Constitution was set in place.

The U S Constitution is ThE GREAT TREATY amongst all that have come to This Great Nation of "THE PEOPLE".
You must protect it from the Enimies Within,
Which in my humble opinion is being demonstrated daily as elected officials allow, and enable a state of Fascism to grow like a cancer on the Federal Goverment!
And I am sure that someday soon you will be able to forgive Mr Peltier for any transgression he may have comitted, by simply taking a true stance of faith; as the Quackers around the merciless school shootings in their community took, finding a true faith in a Creator and your own spiritual timelessness.

There are 12 times as many chronic party line GOP'ers that will tell you,
" How upset they would be if Hillary gets the Democratic nomination. That Barack is somehow more agreeable to them ".
But when asked if they would vote for Obama, they assume the nazi-rush-dittohead position and screech NO ! Replied like return fire in a gunfight.
A republican telling Dems which Dem candidate is fine with them. I guess if I had to choose between the Repub choices. You'd have to waterboard me into that choice. Even then, would that tortured choice be reliable?
The Daily Irrelevant is wrong, wrong, wrong. The author of that blog entry obviously did NOT read the poll in question. It very clearly states that 79% of the populace believe the EARTH revolves around the SUN. 79% of the populace is CORRECT about the relationship between Sol and Earth. The people polled are CORRECT about the sun/Earth, and the same people are CORRECT about the level of corruption and trustworthiness of corporations.
Please note the error in THIS blog entry, for the link provided is factually incorrect beyond belief, in a manner that utterly undermines the basic premise of the blog entry in question.
I noticed something unusual with the sun-earth alignment. On a given day, at a given hour, the earth faces a specific direction relative to the stars. Fast forward, 6 months. when the earth is on the other side of the sun. The earth, facing the same direction relative to the stars, yet the sun would be on the other side of the earth. This has the appeerance of the earth being either ahead or behind 12 hours. Diagram.
For the earth to reach the same position relative to the sun, it would have to rotate 180-degrees, or 12 hours.
Not that this means anything, but I thought it was strange: Then, in the next six months, when the earth returns to its original position, it would then do the same thing: The sun would appear to be on the opposite side of the earth, or a net gain or loss of another 12 hours. After one complete orbit of the sun, the earth -- as viewed from above -- would appear to gain 12 hours; then as it swept back, lose 12 hours.
Sun-Earth Paradox @ 366:
This chart better illustrates the point. Look at the Vernal Equinox, center-bottom. Notice where South America is: It's on the dark side of the earth. Now, look at the opposite diagram of the erath at the Autumnal Equinox: South America is 180-degress opposite: It's in the sunlight. If we were to look at South America from the Sun at both the Vernal and Autumn Equinox, the earth would have to rotate another 180degrees to have South America face the sun in both positions.
Here is another way of looking at it: Compare the positions of the earth relative to the Sun on Sept 23rd (center, bottom) and March 21 (center, top). Notice the United States faces the viewer in both images; but relative to the sun the Earth appears to be 180-degrees out of alignment. Said another way, if we were to look at the earth from the Sun on March 21st, we would have rotate the earth 180 degrees to see the same landmass on earth on Sept 23rd.
Sun-Earth Paradox @ 367:
The point is this: As we rotate around the sun over a 365-day hear we're not gaining or losing an hour; we're gainging and losing 12 hours. Our clocks are not measured by the earth's rotation around the sun; but by the apparent position of the sun in the Earth's sky. Rather, if we really measured earth time based on the position of the earth, then we would have to adjust our clocks accordingly and gradually add or lose 12 hours over the 6-months.
Sun-Earth Paradox @ 368:
This, in part, explains why why we have a leap year every 4 years -- when one extra day is added. And why the old calendars that did not have a leap year had a problem with spring-events falling in the summer. The above problems led to the Gregorian Calendar.
Mathematically it is easier to calculate the orbit of other planets if we percieve the earth as rotating the sun. But, both assertions are accurate because every object moves relative to other objects. Why is it scientifically better to say the sun stands still then to say the earth stands still? It depends on your frame of referrence.
*as rotating around the sun
Will@370
The frame of reference you are refering to is the Galactic Plane, and the Earth , by astronomical definition is the "satellite" moving on an "eliptical orbit" around the Sun and it's axis in relationship to the plane of "orbit" of the sun around the center of our galaxy.
But I personally don't like to get into discussions about relative time space relationships...your point is taken as valid by me, even if the definition is clear.

Obama is the lesser of three evils. He's not a bad guy but when you swim in the sewer eventually you begin to stink. He does give me hope that there will be change and that soon we will change to a country of hope that hopes for change. This could change but I really hope not.

back in my student days, the students who majored in social studies were interested in helping people get out of poverty, helped organize programs like heating oil subsidies, etc.. the shooter in illinois, was majoring in social studies to manage prisons. i think this reflects the sickness that is so widespread in this country these days. the fact that he was taking pharma products and stopped points out pretty severe withdrawel symptoms that the pharma corps. have probably covered up. when i was in school, melancholy was treated with bong hits with friends and that seemed to lighten things up. in todays world, we would be locked up in a prison that might be managed by a person like the shooter in illinois.

The press has always had a love affair with McCain, no surprise there.
Obama doesn't speak to the media very much. They don't question his record - he doesn't have much of one - nobody asks him about the 130 times in the Illinois Senate that he voted "Present". Not yes or no - present!
He's missed more votes in the US Senate than anyone running for POTUS, except for St. McCain!
He missed the SCHIP vote. He was supposed to appear on the View that day, cancelled his appearance because of the vote, but still didn't vote!
His health plan leaves 15 million uninsured, no one questions it!
His speeches go on & on about change & hope, there is very little substance there, but nobody calls him on it.
I could go on, but I'm getting tired.
BTW, we know the media has always treated the Clintons fairly haven't they?
When the pudits start on Hillary, the first thing they talk about is how polarizing she is. Well, a good % of the people out there might not feel that way if they didn't hear it coming out of their TVs every day.
When the race started, I heard many people say they didn't want the media to pick the candidates - fine! My response was that they shouldn't let the MSM regurgitate the old Clinton talking points either.
Guess what happened?

They don't represent ordinary Americans, they don't fund my campaign, and they won't drown out the voices of working families when I am President." -- Bar Obama, 2 days ago.
http://www.barackobama.com/2008/02/13/remarks_of_senator_barack_obam_50.php
A Globe review of Obama's campaign finance records shows that he collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from lobbyists and PACs as a state legislator in Illinois, a US senator, and a presidential aspirant.
In Obama's eight years in the Illinois Senate, from 1996 to 2004, almost two-thirds of the money he raised for his campaigns -- $296,000 of $461,000 -- came from PACs, corporate contributions, or unions, according to Illinois Board of Elections records. He tapped financial services firms, real estate developers, healthcare providers, oil companies, and many other corporate interests, the records show.
Obama's US Senate campaign committee, starting with his successful run in 2004, has collected $128,000 from lobbyists and $1.3 million from PACs, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonprofit organization that tracks money in politics. His $1.3 million from PACs represents 8 percent of what he has raised overall. Clinton's Senate committee, by comparison, has raised $3 million from PACs, 4 percent of her total amount raised, the group said.
In addition, Obama's own federal PAC, Hopefund, took in $115,000 from 56 PACs in the 2005-2006 election cycle out of $4.4 million the PAC raised, according to CQ MoneyLine, which collects Federal Election Commission data. Obama then used those PAC contributions -- including thousands from defense contractors, law firms, and the securities and insurance industries -- to build support for his presidential run by making donations to Democratic Party organizations and candidates around the country.

Wadda wackie universe!
I stand before you humbled. I was given the wrong info on Obama's vote on Telecom immunity, I apoligize.
But I won't apoligize for pointing out that he missed the SCHIP vote.

Wow, your humbled by one incident. What about the rest?
maher remains the most ignorant asshat on tv
first, he opened his show with a bare mention of his writers being back....unlike colbert and stewart, who had an on-air lovefest
then he goes to what he calls his fav gay bar in weho...except its a restaraunt...and he talks to everyone, except the owner of the place, and the owner of the real bar next door (both who are gay repugs...and my clients)
then he lets sullivan rant about muslims using down symdrome kids for suicide bombers (proven untrue) then he totally mistates the argument over the fisa/telecom immunity and then he adds the hair to the panel
what a dickwad
Proud2bHumble @ 129:
