John McCain and 'My Friends'

Let's start a word counter for the many times John McCain says: "My friends" in his speeches. He seems like he uses it after every sentence and it's as phony as a three dollar bill. <correction> Is Limbaugh or Ingraham his "friends? In one of the most uninspiring speeches I've ever watched---I think I heard some weird chanting going on in the crowd of McCain's supporters too. Wow, almost cult-like. And what's with that glassy look in his eyes? Jack Kemp wrote a piece that appeared on Townhall---begging Conservative talkies to get off McCrazy's back.

You gave him your best shots and he took it like a man. Now, as he heads toward the nomination, I urge you to continue to be critical, but to do so in measured ways that will not damage his ability to win in November against those who would weaken our nation's defense, wave a white flag to al-Qaida, socialize our health-care system, and promote income redistribution and class warfare instead of economic growth and equality of opportunity.

It's Kemp that's waving the white flag to the Hannity's...

"...to win in November against those who would weaken our nation’s defense, wave a white flag to al-Qaida, socialize our health-care system, and promote income redistribution and class warfare instead of economic growth and equality of opportunity."

There it is ladies and germs - the conservative agenda for all to see.

The number of votes he has been getting compared to Obama and Clinton tell me all I need to know about his chances to win the election.

So I don't really care what he says or does, he will lose.

A two dollar bill is legal tender. You should have used "as phony as a three dollar bill" But then that would give him an extra phony dollar!

JoeW's picture

Umm...I think you meant three dollar bill. But yes, it's as contrived as can be. I had noticed McCain's 'my friends' shtick a few weeks ago. He says it so often, it's almost impossible to get a clip of him without it.

It looks as though the new sloganeering for the Repubs is catching on. First it was "cut and run", now it is "waive the white flag to Al Qaida" and "surrender to the terrorists". I guess these were the winners with the focus groups. I guess its a lot easier coming up with some catchy phrases than actually going out and catching the people responsible for attacking us. But then again, there is a whole lot more money in making war than keeping peace.

Somebody needs to nail McCain on health care... HARD.

His grandfather and father were in the military, and the Senator was born on a Military base in the Panama Canal Zone.

He is a lifelong beneficiary of single-payer government health care (Born on a Military base, Child of a Navy Admiral, Served in the Navy, then as a Naval liaison to the Senate, then in the House of Representatives and then the Senate)... HE HAS NEVER BEEN EXCLUSIVELY IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR and HAD TO PAY FOR HIS OWN HEALTH CARE OR EDUCATION (Naval Academy).

And he has the balls to stand up there and decry the "socialization" of health care??? GEEEEEEZZZZZUSSSS, what a freakin' hypocrite.

All the rest of us want is the same access to health care and education that you've had all your life, Senator... you know, the same way every other civilized, affluent nation does it.

I heard that many veterans of the Vietnam War have a nickname for John McCain---and it is "Songbird."

Whereas other POWS have taken bullets before singing away American secrets, McCain acted like a songbird in giving vital information away which is said to have caused up to 60,000 more deaths.

McCain is a "Songbird."

McCain is so obviously uncomfortable speaking that it is painful to watch. And the "my friends" is beginning to grate. He jerks around and doesn't know quite what to do with his hands. Someone is very apparently holding up an "applause" sign when they think it is necessary as his speeches are not worthy of any applause. His imprisonment definitely took a toll on him. And BTW, I don't consider McCain a hero. I don't know where that ever got started but please tell me what he did to be called a hero? He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. End of story.

I do not like McCain, but I can bring up the question as to its validity. After what happened to John Kerry in 2004, questioning McCain's actions in Vietnam are legitimate. I mean it is a fact that McCain killed innocent men, women, children, and elderly from above in dropping out bombs on to below. So, if it was okay to attack Kerry in 2004, it is quite fair to ask whether McCain was a "true war hero" or not.

I am just asking, not accusing, nor I am saying that McCain was not a real "war hero," either. It is very legitimate to pan McCain's war record to make sure he is not embellishing facts and that he is not taken undue credit and politically benefiting from the death of innocent Vietnamese who died because of his dropping bombs, as well.

It is fair, however, to ask that the U.S. government to release the military records of John McCain which to date have been sealed.

Will John McCain be honest and a "man's man" and ask the U.S. government to release his military records, and all of them, in details, including all the data regarding his POW status and what he told his captors, which to date have been sealed?

I mean McCain made the claim that Jane Fonda's actions got him more torture back in 2004, when Kerry was running for president. I thought McCain was a liar then and now for saying that. McCain also has hired the "Swiftboaters for Truth against Kerry" from 2004, to work on his campaign, as well.

McCain needs only now to ask the U.S. government to release his military records, and all of them, in details, including all the data regarding his POW status and what he told his captors, which to date have been sealed, to see whether McCain is really "a man on the straight-talk express."

From the Strait Jacket Express, it's Gone InSane........translated

Hope, my friends, hope is a powerful thing. I can attest to that better than many. For I have seen men's hopes tested in hard and cruel ways. That few will ever experience.

Translation: I've had to pander to a party and for a president who slandered me in South Carolina in 2000 just to be able to fight a Religious Huckster right now. And I'm tired. Oh, and I'm of course alluding to my days as a POW. You know that, right? Cuz, boy, I tell ya, it's really difficult to keep up hope when you have to support the use of the torture tactics that were used on me.

And I stood astonished at the resilience of their hopes in the darkest hours, because it didn't resolve in an exaggerated belief in their individual strength, but in the support of their comrades, and their faith in our country.

Translation: Other people somehow manage to keep up hope. Not me. I gave up all my ideals and self-respect for this fucking nomination.

My hope for our country resides in my faith in the American character. A character which proudly defends the right to think, and do for ourselves, but perceives self interest in accord with a kinship of ideals, which when called upon, Americans will defend, with their very lives.

Translation: People will go to war at my request.

To encourage a country with only rhetoric, rather than sound and proven ideas, to trust in the strength and courage of free people, is not a promise of hope.

Translation: My hope kicks Obama's hope's ass.

It's a platitude.

Translation: Ooh, snap! Check and mate, Barack! Check! And! Mate!

When I was a young man, I thought glory was the highest ambition, and that all glory was self glory. My parents tried to teach me otherwise, as did the Naval Academy. But I didn't understand the lesson until later in life, when I confronted a challenge I never expected to face.

Translation: I believed silly things back in 1803. I don't believe them any more. I am now very, very old.

In that confrontation, I discovered that I was dependent on others to a greater extent than I had ever realized. But that neither they, nor the cause we served, made any claims on my identity. On the contrary, I discovered, that nothing is more liberating in life than to fight for a cause that encompasses you, but is not defined by your existence alone. And that has made all the difference in the world, my friends, all the difference in the world.

Translation: I'm going to send you to more wars. You'll be traumatized, but you'll thank me for it later. Trust me. I'm very, very old.

I don't seek the presidency on the presumption that I am blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save my country in its hour of need.

Translation: I am not Barack Obama. But, more importantly, I am not George W. Bush.

I seek the presidency with the humility of a man who cannot forget that my country saved me.

Translation: Remember not what you can do for your country. Remember what your country has done for you. (And keep that something safely away from everyone else.)

I'm running to serve America, and to champion the ideas I believe will help us do what every American generation has managed to do -- to make in our time, and from our challenges, a stronger country, and a better world.

Translation: Please don't pass the torch to a younger generation just yet. I'm sorry my generation has fucked things up so badly, and I'd really like to try to salvage our reputation before I die.

I intend to do that by fighting for the principles and policies that I believe best serve the interests of the American people. For a government that takes and spends less of your money, and competently discharges its responsibilities. That shows a proper respect for our rights and values. That provides a strong and capable defense. That encourages the enterprise and ingenuity of individuals, businesses, and families, who know best how to advance America's economy, and secure the dreams that have made us the greatest nation in history.

Translation: Really, I'm sorry about all that has happened. I tried to run the first time against George Doublefuck Bush, but you chose him instead. So, seriously, please, let me save face for the sake of our party.

As I have done my entire career, I will make my case to every American who will listen. I won't confine myself to the comfort of speaking only with those who agree with me. I will make my case to all the people. I will listen to those who disagree. I will attempt to persuade them. I will debate, and I will learn from them.

Translation: Can I make it any plainer? You don't have to go outside the party to get out of the Bushes. I am not George Bush! Got it? I am not George Bush!

But I will fight every moment of every day for what I believe is right for this country, and I will not yield.

Translation: Ok, I'm a little George Bush. I'll be continuing his policies.

And my friends, I promise you, I am fired up and ready to go. Thank you, and god bless you.

Translation: Nothing to translate. That was a laugh line. This man? Fired up? Hee hee.

McCain is not God and thus he can be questioned. McCain has lots to answer as well.

By the way, I am not into the "hero worship" sickness that too many Americans are addicted to. McCain is not a "hero" to me, plus the fact that he just voted for legalizing torture to appease the right wing wackos. If one goes to war and kills innocentr civilians and then is taken into custody, going by McCain's own logic in 2008, what happened to him in Vietnam is not something out of "heroes" but what one should expect upon taken into custody by enemy forces.

McCain cries about having been "tortured" yet shows how real those crocodile tears really are when he appeases the right wing and votes to legalize such an evil practice.

I do not call such characters like that "heroes." Unlike you, I do not place "halo's" on the heads of all military personnel who kill others and then bitch about it.

I know many POWS who are not always seeking fame and the like as McCain has exploited what happened to him. McCain is not the ONLY FREAKIN POW to ever wear the American military uniform. How long is McCain going to milk that military record of his for political gain and hold it as a blackmail/extortion tactic over his politicial opponents?

McCain's game has gotten very old and tired, no pun intended, about his age, etc. But again, McCain is not as unique to battlefield horrors as he likes to claim. There are many unsung war heroes who do not seek to benefit from it or marginalize others the way McCain does with his military past. I am tired of McCain's b.s.

The fact that Kemp is still spewing those two century-old talking points is proof enough of how hollow he and the conservative movement is at its core.

Conservatism is not based around any of those things. It revolves completly around crony capitalism, war-profiteering and tax dodging by the extremely wealthy. Security only exists to conservatives as a way for companies like Halliburton and Blackwater to garner no-bid, cost-plus-based contracts (the very antithesis of competition and free markets).

That Kemp cannot acknowledge these glaring hypocrisies at the center of his idealogy is proof of his, and almost all, conservative intellectual dishonesty.

This man? Fired up? Hee hee.

I argue that McCain unlike the many of thousands of war veterans and former POWS has milked his status every inch of the way in his political career compared to others who faced similar battle.

I have had family members fight in every war for the United States since World War I and some who were on the front lines in Vietnam, Korea, WWI, and WWII and a few who were also POWS, who never carried on the way the media and McCain do. As a matter of fact, they seldom discussed their "war stories."

I do not care whether you like what I say or not. I come here to post my own thoughts and comments and not here to satisfy your wishes and commands.

If you like McCain, great. But do not project your crap on to me. I do not like him or his style or beliefs. McCain was a spoiled child and lived in the same elite circles that Bush came from. McCain is another heir to the establishment and it was not meant for such a child of the connected to have been shot down by enemy fire.

Mr. XXXX's picture

A principle of folk logic is that one can’t prove a negative...

But there is one big, fat problem with all this. Among professional logicians, guess how many think that you can’t prove a negative? That’s right: zero. Yes, Virginia, you can prove a negative, and it’s easy, too. For one thing, a real, actual law of logic is a negative, namely the law of non-contradiction. This law states that that a proposition cannot be both true and not true. Nothing is both true and false. Furthermore, you can prove this law. It can be formally derived from the empty set using provably valid rules of inference. One of the laws of logic is a provable negative. Wait… this means we’ve just proven that it is not the case that one of the laws of logic is that you can’t prove a negative. So we’ve proven yet another negative! In fact, ‘you can’t prove a negative’ is a negative so if you could prove it true, it wouldn’t be true! Uh-oh.

Not only that, but any claim can be expressed as a negative, thanks to the rule of double negation. This rule states that any proposition P is logically equivalent to not-not-P. So pick anything you think you can prove. Think you can prove your own existence? At least to your own satisfaction? Then, using the exact same reasoning, plus the little step of double negation, you can prove that you aren’t nonexistent. Congratulations, you’ve just proven a negative. The beautiful part is that you can do this trick with absolutely any proposition whatsoever. Prove P is true and you can prove that P is not false.

So why is it that people insist that you can’t prove a negative? I think it is the result of two things. (1) an acknowledgement that induction is not bulletproof, airtight, and infallible, and (2) a desperate desire to keep believing whatever one believes, even if all the evidence is against it. That’s why people keep believing in alien abductions, even when flying saucers always turn out to be weather balloons, stealth jets, comets, or too much alcohol. You can’t prove a negative! You can’t prove that there are no alien abductions! Meaning: your argument against aliens is inductive, therefore not incontrovertible, and since I want to believe in aliens, I’m going to dismiss the argument no matter how overwhelming the evidence against aliens, and no matter how vanishingly small the chance of extraterrestrial abduction.

If we’re going to dismiss inductive arguments because they produce conclusions that are probable but not definite, then we are in deep doo-doo. Despite its fallibility, induction is vital in every aspect of our lives, from the mundane to the most sophisticated science. Without induction we know basically nothing about the world apart from our own immediate perceptions. So we’d better keep induction, warts and all, and use it to form negative beliefs as well as positive ones. You can prove a negative — at least as much as you can prove anything at all."

From “THINKING TOOLS: YOU CAN PROVE A NEGATIVE” by Steven D. Hales, professor of philosophy at Bloomsburg University, Pennsylvania.

That sorry sack of poo is REALLY bad at reading speeches. I mean he's really, really, really, really bad at reading speeches! Isn't reding speeches the only thing a Senator has to do? He sounds like a high school kid running for senior class president. He's been at this a long time, and you'd think he would have picked up some skillz along the way, but obviously he hasn't. He's just a tremendously poor public speaker. Maybe he's just tired and old. Good luck in November, GOP!

Listening to this clip I can hear how McCain thinks he is running against Obama. At the top, he is making his case for why he has a unique perspective on hope. Also, he went into a discussion of faith, playing to the fundy base he alienated in 2000. Now I have not been to church in years, but my old preacher father used to be quite fond of I Corinthians 13:

1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

I would not accuse or credit Big Mac's speech writers of cribbing or pandering (well maybe pandering). But what struck me when I read this verse, which I don't think I've heard much outside weddings and dad's old sermons, is while this election cycle is chock full of discussions about hope and faith and prophesy and knowledge — what's really lacking is love. I'm talking about love like compassion, forgiveness, turning the other cheek -- enduring a loss for a time even when you can win for the small price of distortion or falsehood or appealing to the ignorance of the masses.

"My friends," In all seriousness, while I do not doubt faith sustained John McCain through his torture and confinement as a POW, and I do not doubt that he has a quality uncommon among many of today's self-styled conservatives, and I do not doubt the faith and confidence of Mike Huckabee nor the wisdom, experience and knowledge embodied by Hillary Clinton, there is only one man who has even the faintest of possibility of presencing true "love" for all of humanity. Of course I'm speaking of Dick Cheney Barack Hussein Obama.

No kidding... I went to cast my primary vote in Florida on my way to taking my kindergartner to school. It was his first time at the polls. Before we left, my wife asked who I was going to vote for. (She's Canadian and snuck into the country by taking a barrel trip down Niagara Falls, so she can't vote without the risk of being deported.) I told her I genuinely did not know and left to cast my ballot.

Ignoring the fact that my vote might be moot due to the DNC's rules, I thought long and hard before voting. My son asked me when we were going inside as I explained what I was about to do "who are 'we' going to vote for, Daddy?"... not knowing the candidates or even a Democrat from a Republican... more like who I thought might win the Hockey game that night. (Yes, he's five, a Floridian and the biggest Hockey fan you have ever met. I swear it's genetic, eh?) Anyway, I remembered how he had told me the week before that he learned at school about how people with brown skin used to have to ride in the back of the bus and how silly that was and how a man named Martin Luther King helped change all that, which is why we celebrate his life... And how a mean man shot Martin Luther King with a gun and he died, but he was in heaven like grandpa and Maxine, our old dog whose batteries ran out not long after my dad's.

I tell my son that his grandpa loved to golf and Maxine love to catch her Frisbee, so they were together in Heaven playing Frolf... In his world MLK is there, too, with his grandpa and our old dog — all enjoying a nice round of Frolf. What better way for two old preachers to spend eternity?

Standing in the voting booth, I realized that in my heart I always knew I'd vote for Barack -- even though my brain says Hillary will survive and game the system and maybe get some good things done to make the world just a little easier for the people who seem to need it the most.

If Barack does find his way to the White House, he will be inundated. They will try to assassinate him not with bullets, but with lies and money and process. Will he become like John McCain? In 2000, I might have voted for McCain had he been the nominee. He lost my vote forever when he refused to stand up for John Kerry during his 2004 fragging. John McCain, you embraced a man whose connections bought him a safe seat on the sidelines while you were enduring torture. You embraced him while he smeared a man who, like you, was a genuine hero. If you find your way to the White House, I pray that moment of weakness was born of fear and captivity -- and you would govern like a man I'd be proud for my sons to know.

My dad and I disagreed on a lot. Politically, Spiritually and Morally. Our love for each other endures. My dad opposed many things I would tolerate or embrace. Now that he is gone, our love is the only thing that remains.

Faith and Hope are wonderful things. They may indeed inspire action and votes, and move a nation to seek peace or war. Love will always find peace. Somehow I think I can sleep at night with John McCain in the White House. But, oh, wouldn't it be grand on some future Monday in February (the third Monday of February to be precise) for my son and me to look back and say remember that day we cast "our" first vote for President Barack Obama? Remember how silly it was for Democrats to hate Republicans and Conservatives to hate Liberals? And remember how Mom used to get so confused about distance, temperature and volume measurements. What was the deal with that whole metric system? Those crazy Canucks.

We are talking about rumors of John McCain talking under torture. I feel that if not proven as fact it should not be discussed in regards to his campaign because it is defamitory.

McCain gave his name, rank, serial number, and date of birth, as well as his ship's name, squadron's name, and his intended target. Those last three things are in violation of the military Code of Conduct and McCain has himself written about how he regretted doing that. He famously gave the names of the Green Bay Packer offensive line when he was pressed to give names of other pilots in his squad. All of that is public record and all of it is written in McCain's own book, Faith of My Fathers.

I would hardly hold those minor violations against him but it's not defamatory to point out that he did violate the Code of Conduct. I would be surprised if Clinton or Obama were to ever even bring this up.

And i would like to add it is not a real issue. What i was so angry about is a whispering campaign. This site in particular is no place to start one. I have too much respect for it.

I agree completely that it's not a real issue. I'm also tired of the occasional attacks on his citizenship since he was born in Panama. That's another non-issue that pops up around here. I don't think anyone wants to get into the mess of taking away citizenship from the children of military personnel that are born abroad.

"...to win in November against those who would weaken our nation’s defense, wave a white flag to al-Qaida, socialize our health-care system, and promote income redistribution and class warfare instead of economic growth and equality of opportunity."

There it is ladies and germs - the conservative agenda for all to see.

let's see ever since Reagan we have
A) taken from the poor to give to the rich check
B) promoted class warfare by making the middle class into the working poor or endetured servants check
C) Give al-Qaida all the ammunition to recruit more and made the rest of the world dislike us check
D) promote equality if you are the wealth check
If this is what the repugs think is what this nation needs well screw them I for one think that the tax cuts for those at the top should be harsher, al-quada is a catch all for any terrorist act except the one that was governmentt sanctioned to stop those that questioned the war with iraq I hope all those that bend a knee to the corporations are booted out of office
oh, and yes I think a one payer system should be enacted as it concerns health care a for profit system is crap

You don't want to catch the boogyman if you did who would they use to scare us with ?
