Mike Huckabee would be proud. How can you be anything but disgusted with this sort of misogynistic behavior? This is one of those stories that makes you yell at your tee vee, but I was happy to see that all the Kansans interviewed in this clip were as upset by this as I was. It is a private, religious school and it's not clear if they have a written policy on the matter and it appears school officials aren't commenting.

And some people should just be takin out!

Isn't Kathleen Sebelius the governor of Kansas? That's gonna cause those folks some problems, I reckon.

Hey this is America...where all men are created equal...well except for Indians, Blacks or Women. It says so in the Declaration of Independence.

Women have smaller brains. Men's bodies are made for sports.
God made them that way. What's the deal?

Ok fundies I know you enjoy your wallowing in your stupidity but please take note:

Men and woman are exactly the same but for some anatomical differences and that does NOT include a difference in the number of ribs. Morons.

In a perfect world they'd punish people for being this ignorant.

My mom taught a class full of Farsi (Arabic) children and found she had no say or control over what the boys did because they were taught not to listen to women at home.

Yet another way we are becoming more like the terrorists.

Just minutes before she was scheduled to referee a boy's varsity basketball game at St. Mary's Academy, Michelle Campbell was told she would not be allowed to work the game because she is a woman.

St. Mary's Academy, near Topeka, Kan., is a controversial religious school that follows older Roman Catholic laws, but many argue that religious beliefs does not give the school the right to discriminate.

"The policy of the school was that they indeed do not permit female officials to officiate the boys athletic contests at their school," said Gary Musselman, executive director of the Kansas State High School Athletics Association.

Campbell says she is "dumbfounded" over the Feb. 2 incident.

"When I put that shirt on, I don't see a gender. I'm an official," she told "Good Morning America" today in a live interview from Kansas with the Rev. Darin Putthoff, the director of basketball for the Topeka Officials Association, who was scheduled to officiate the game with Campbell.

This is not St. Mary's first gender controversy. In 2004, St. Mary's refused to play a boys football game with White City because it had a girl playing on the team. St. Mary's forfeited the game.

...

Putthoff said that he thinks the St. Mary's administrator who made the decision didn't "have a full understanding about the policy, so the information he offered us that day was really wrong. … The authority over men was not really the issue; the issue was gender."

Kansas: home of Fred Phelps, these idiots, and in my five solid years of touring as a musician -- the only hotels where they censor the internet.

In a perfect world, people would not be this ignorant.

And it's not just the fundamentalists causing these kinds of problems. It's the all-too-common notion that faith and religion are worthy of respect innately.

The people in the video are surprised that people could possibly think this way in this day and age? Really? We still say that if this is part of someone's "faith" that we should "respect" it. And most people in this country still extol the Bible, when the Bible actually does advocate a system of morals and norms that values women less than men. Why should it be a surprise that there are some people who take the text of the Bible at its word, and then feel that their faith demands "respect?"

I live in KS/MO and have been to St. Mary's the local non-catholics call people in this branch of (very close to nazi) uber-catholics - fruits. Funny thing too is that this is where Timothy McVeigh spent alot of time before the OKC bombing...

I do believe this makes them eligible for 'faith' funding from the Bush administration. After all, one wouldn't want these ideals, based in twisted fantasy to fade away. The religious fanatics of the US are equally disturbing as any religious freak the world over. And they're all so sure that they're right, they're willing to kill you for not believing their tripe.

You know, if the Saudi theocracy or the Iranian theocracy were Christian instead of Islamic, I would imagine that many American Christians would gladly live there.

And hey, that'd be fine. If a person actually consents to live under a theocracy, more power to him. But, of course, theocrats (except, perhaps, for the Amish) will not be content to have their own small community, where its population does unanimously consent to live under Biblical law. They won't be satisfied until you and I and everyone else lives under Biblical law.

This is one private Catholic school's "policy" -- not an entire state's. I am a former 6-year resident of Kansas, and lived less than 40 miles from Oskaloosa. Folks in the Sunflower State are not as backwoods as the likes of the fundies living there would have you believe.

As far as your suggestion that Kansas "should ceded [sic] from the Union, and move them [sic] to Saudia Arabia" goes, you would do well to study history, in addition to basic English grammar.

Kansas spilled a lot of blood before and during the Civil War to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.

Why do Amuuuurican Christians Hate GOd :)

just one more example that organized religion is the biggest mind fucker the human race has ever known.

Gotta love that "red state mentality".

OMG!

Amazing how quick many are to trash Kansas in general. Sure, they're the same one's that had their moment with teaching creationism as a science, but I would remind everyone this is, so far, an isolated issue with a regressive church.

St. Mary's Kansas is a weird little town that is not Roman Catholic. These guys were tossed out for being too rigid. In many ways it resembles the Mormon cults in rural Arizona and Utah. It's a very small town run by a really crazy priest. I think there is a predisposition for religious obsessive compulsive disorder there. I'm not sure what all the excitement is about here - Kansas is actually rapidly becoming a "blue" state. You might be surprised if you actually went to Kansas. Lawrence Ks is one of the most progressive little cities in the country - a bit like Madison Wisconsin. I don't live in Ks, but do live about 4 blocks into Missouri. Ks is more progressive than my neighborhood by a long shot.

First of all, these were "boys," not men. And if we're going to be asked to support the basis for the school's decision, does it not follow that mothers have no authority over their sons?

But it was good to see that a sense of fair play and existed outside of the narrow-minded school administration. I presume they are all, or mostly, men. And men will be boys, you know.

Hey, Logan, tomorrow, can we play the caption game with this photo?

Thank-you for posting this. Unbelievable, non? This school has taken it upon themselves to have a school policy which violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Question: Do you think they have even heard of the Civil Rights Act?

Suggestion: Before becoming a school board member, you have to pass a test showing that you have basic knowledge of U.S. history, that you at least know that there is a Constitution that provides the legal framework for our country's laws, and that you understand the difference between a religious belief and a scientifically based theory.

God help us if we start to become the new France!

I am a fan of French life and society and do not find it very mature to witness your bashing of France. France is a beautiful country with gorgeous architecture and rich history. In recent polls, the French people, in comparison to Americans are more happy with their status in life and with their government, whereas, Americans are LESS happy with their status in life and LESS satisfied with their government's policies.

The French have a much more open and toleratant society on average than the United States and do not suffer from such awful sexual repression not suffers a socially regressive society due to religious intolerance, bigotry, and hatred of other nation's based on the truth.

One last thing----The French government did not buy into the lies and fraud of the Bush administration's case for the war on Iraq in March, 2003. The American people should wish they had leaders as honest as former President Jacques Chirac and the former France Ambassador to the UN, Dominique de Villepin, who were able to call the Bush administration on its flimsy proof to invade Iraq that Colin Powell brought to the U.N.

It is time to say the government of France outsmarted the Bush administration in 2003 and did not buy into such outright and premeditated lies to bring about an illegal war on Iraq.

When will Americans grow up and stop their childish bashing of the French people and the nation of France?

And you wonder why America is hated in the world? It is this kind of talk of why America is not well received throughout the world.

Don't think that the St. Mary's Academy is representative of Kansas at all. (In fact, many of their students come from throughout the United States.) Most Kansans think that the people associated with this group are religious freaks. This schismatic group disavows all the reforms of the Roman Catholic Church since the 1960s and have invented their own theology.

For those that take delight in calling all Kansans fundamentalist hicks, consider that our two-term governor, Kathleen Sebelius, is a Democrat, and gave the Democratic response to the 2008 State of the Union speech. Two of our four U. S. representatives are also Democrats. (One of them is Nancy Boyda, who represents the district which contains St. Mary's.) Huckabee may have won the Kansas Republican caucus, but he received less than 1/2 the number of votes that Obama received in winning the Democratic caucus. The Democratic caucus was held on a Tuesday night during a blizzard, while the Republican caucus was held on a warm, sunny Saturday morning. Over twice as many Democrats participated as Republicans.

Wait... this is a Catholic school??? Women can't have authority over males they say? I wish somebody had told Sr. Rose who used to whack us (boys) around the place with a clothes brush. Things have changed a lot in the R. Catholic Church in the last 30 years apparently. This is not a question about whether they have a right to believe as they wish, and then act according to those beliefs. Will have that right to a reasonable degree. The question is about how much deference should be paid by society at large to groups with belief systems that are discriminatory. If they want to participate in society at large, they should conform to us, not the other way around.

Obviously, every one in a while, a situation arises where society is wrong and the minority is right. I do not think this is one of those occasions. You want to play basketball with the civilized world, you act like a civilized school. The end.

i would have no argument whatsoever

however, if the league rules state that both teams must accept the referees provided...i again have no argument

as was noted above, st mary's forfeited a football game rather than play against a team with a female member...so in that case they accepted the consequences of their beliefs

however, if the leauge does not have a rule in regards to which referees are used, then accomidations should be made

and look, i have no love for st marys or the sect they belong to

it appears that 30 years ago, when the land was to be sold by the kato org to job corps, the people in the area rose up and somehow talked kato into donating the property to the school and church

so a jobs program was killed for another catholic school....that aint cool

and the sect has some pretty wacky ideas which include some that are pretty anti semetic

im just playing a bit of devils advocate in regards to this one issue

> however, if the league rules state that both teams must accept the referees provided…i again have no argument

Again, why should we show deference to a sexist bunch of a**holes? Thankfully, I do not think many people feel it necessary to make concessions such as these.

> however, if the leauge does not have a rule in regards to which referees are used, then accomidations should be made

Maybe they can request she wear a burqa too. Seems just as reasonable.

> im just playing a bit of devils advocate in regards to this one issue

I do not mind. I am sure there are others who would argue the same as you.

Kansas is pretty tolerant. Oskaloosa, which is not far from St. Mary's was the first city in America to have an all female city government, in the 1880s I think. So don't call Kansas anti-women. Close by in geography, around 1900 was published The Lucifer, the first free-love publication in America.

We tolerate, but don't any of us like, Fred Phelps. We know him for what he is--a blowhard worthless SOB with an obsession. He is also nice to compare anti-gay Republicans to. Kansas Republicans hate it when we do that. Fred incidentally is a registered Democrat the last time anyone looked. St. Mary's has out catholiced the Roman Catholic Church, as it was part of, I think, Archbishop Lefebvre's movement that John Paul II kicked out of the church. Creationists win because Kansans are used to pulling the R lever and getting a moerate like Bob Dole or Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker. They are learning. States don't change from Red to Blue that fast. Republicans are a bit thick-headed.

But most Kansans are pretty down-to-earth and sane. It was a female Kansas Populist who once said Kansans needed to raise less corn and more hell. We also had the Civil War here from 1854 to 1865, longer than anywhere else in America by far. We fought slavery with sword and rifle longer than the rest of the nation. Jim Crow died in large part because Kansans didn't like it. And check out the Kansas court cases on racial equality before the SCOTUS took the Brown case.

It is time they started covering their bodies completely or be killed, is that Christianity or...oh yeah that's Muslem, I get confused

Thank-you for posting this. Unbelievable, non? This school has taken it upon themselves to have a school policy which violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Question: Do you think they have even heard of the Civil Rights Act?

Suggestion: Before becoming a school board member, you have to pass a test showing that you have basic knowledge of U.S. history, that you at least know that there is a Constitution that provides the legal framework for our country's laws, and that you understand the difference between a religious belief and a scientifically based theory.

they are a private school that takes no federal or state monies....do they have to abide by titles 7-9?

and lets say they have a strict policy regarding seperation of the sexes...as many orthodox jews do....would you guys still be blasting them?

lets say the administrator spoke out of turn....it appears he did as they forfeited a football game where a female was on the opposing team

it is possible that they dont see women as inferior...they just believe that there should be no physical contact between the sexes outside of marriage

Your argument is reminiscent of the Jim Crow South, where I lived for awhile before forced integration MADE the school district I was living in combine their two high schools into one in 1970.

The Civil Rights Act is the law. Yes, you have to abide by it, even if you don't accept federal money. As far as I know, our Two Americas does not extend to two separate sets of laws, one for religious extremists and the other for the rest of us who are apparently hellbound.

Whites in the Jim Crow South used to claim that they didn't see blacks as inferior (even though they most assuredly did), that they just believed that there shouldn't be contact between the races, such as in restaurants, on buses, in the workplace, at church, at school ... the separate but equal doctrine. What a load of you-know-what.

Your suggestion that they might think that there should be no physical contact between the sexes outside of marriage is an interesting one. To take this line further, any fundamentalist religion, or cult, or belief system could just come up with any set of rules they want to live by and then make them trump U.S. laws based on the framework provided by our Constitution. I don't think so.

"ummm….what is not civilized about not wishing for the sexes to mix physically in arena’s outside of marriage?"

Because it's sexist, and sexism is uncivilized.

Unless you're committed to living in the middle ages. Do you also believe in boiling people in oil? Slavery? All that fun stuff?

Don't they do this already? Women are not allowed certain positions in the Catholic Church, no? I do not know the history there, but I doubt the government is going to step in any time soon to resolve that.

Jeeez! It is a PRIVATE RELIGIOUS school! It is no ones business what they do there! If the parents don't like it, they should complain and ultimately leave the school, but why is this PRIVATE issue a PUBLIC matter? Isn't there freedom of religion, and freedom of speech in this country? If these fools want to live in the 12th century, what business is it of yours?

Before you sell Kansas to the Saudis, remember that Kansas produced Barack Hussein Obama's mama! The child she and his Kansas grandma raised shows good Kansas values. Deal with what you can't change, improve what you can, and don't waste words or good ammunition on crazed religious nuts who are scared shitless if anyone approaches them. They were even afraid of me in my wheelchair! If they sneak into office, throw them out next time and pay more attention to candidates. Sticks and stones may break my bones..........

Leave Kansas alone. Every state has assholes.

Except this private religious school brings in referees from outside their little sexist sphere and expects those referees to abide by their stupid rules. If they desire to participate in PUBLIC basketball games and activity associations then they had better be prepared to make concessions. You have it backwards. By the way, calm down.

I love this part of the ABC article.

"The response was about women having authority over men," Putthoff said. He then asked whether there were any female teachers who taught boys and what the difference was. "He said he 'didn't really know.'"

dumbass.

Private school means they get to have their own rules.

Kinda like Muslim schools where women have to wear head scarves.

Personaly I find it funny though that a school named after a woman would have a problem with a woman ref.

Keep in mind it was a loony Catholic school. Just imagine if America was silly enough to put Catholics on the Supreme Court; they may say something like a woman is too feeble minded to make her own medical decisions. Oh wait, they already did that.

I'm laughing too hard to type- I'll post xomething later

The private school in question is participating in a public organization that is on the verge of kicking them out for this incident. Good for them by the way. Sexists a**holes can play basketball among themselves.

The head scarf issue is slowly expanding into the public sphere. Schools in France requiring a dress code have come under attack for not allowing Muslim students to wear their chosen attire in violation of school policy. If it is a public school this is a difficult question to resolve, especially in America, as our government is not supposed to make any laws respecting or discriminating against the practice of religion.

There is no end to this type of bickering though. If you grant special rights to the Muslims, then the Christians will want theirs, and eventually the Scientologists will get in on the action, and it is infinite regression from that point because god, how many are religions are in this world, and how are we supposed to distinguish between the valid ones and in the invalid ones? The answer in recent years seems to be grant special consideration to those religions with many adherents - especially if they happen to harbor extremely radical and violent factions.

I have got an idea though. How about we give no special consideration to religions in our public schools. I mean none at all. Extreme? Yep, but when you feel the other side pulling you slowly into the abyss, sometimes the answer is to pull back just as hard.

Finally some sense! I come from Lawrence where we have a bumper sticker that reads: Lawrence Kansas: 50 Sq Miles of Reality... surrounded by Kansas

Everyone loves it here, it has an amazing music and arts scene, very progressive politics (and is hated and picketed by the fundies you all speak of each year). Kansas could very well go blue... if the nominee is Barack. We Democrats went 75% for him, our Democratic govenor supports him, and we sent a democrat to congress in 2006. I know Kansas doesn't matter much in the electoral college, but it's been a while since Kansas voted anything but Republican.

Well, at least we now know where Osama bin Laden has been hiding out all these years. Why is it that all the ultra-orthodox religious fundamentalist fanatical men all have the same denigrating attitude toward all women? Crazy, crazy, crazy.

But St. Mary's administrator takes the cake. "St. Mary’s Academy, near Topeka, Kan., is a controversial religious school that follows older Roman Catholic laws,..."

I seem to recollect while I was being raised Catholic that nuns had authority over boys and girls, often wielding a nasty ruler to discipline any recalcitrant kids. (I self-excommunicated myself as a teenager, after I decided to seek the "spirit of truth" for myself). I just wonder how much "older" these "older Roman Catholic laws" are that St. Mary's administrator seems hell-bent on following and implementing. What about nuns? Wielding rulers? Where do they fit into this guy's authoritarian scheme of things? Or is St. Mary's Academy one of those all-male religious fundamentalist Catholic schools that often lead to mal-adjusted young men who cause so much sorrow for women later in their lives?

Hey there Kansas! How about a little Sharia law??

My understanding is that Kansas is very proud to have fought to end slavery.

If we can free his campaign from the lies his enemies are spreading about him I can imagine Kansas voting for Obama.

I grew up a Catholic in a Catholic school system and non of this wierd retro fundamentalist crap was going on then. In fact the nuns dominated my grade school and had plenty of authority of the males. The Charasmatic Christian movement started sweeping into some segments of the Catholic Faith just when i was becoming an adult. In fact that movement helped me become an atheist (for which i shal ever be gratefull). The Catholic Church in America has been subverted, plain and simple. And that is saying something considering how fucked up it was to begin with.

Some people have to be brought into the 21st century kicking and screaming.

21st? Hell, these assclowns have yet to be dragged over the 50 yard line of the 20th century.

St. Mary's Academy is part of the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to the Vatican 2 reforms. This society is not centered in Kansas, so don't associate it with Fred Phelps. They have churches all over the place.

This is the group that Mel Gibson and his father are members. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the society is dangerously anti-Semitic.

It is easy (and correct) to characterize the Society of St. Pius X as a hate group and by that description, one is not anti-Catholic (Rome excommunicated Lefebve) nor is one anti-Christian. This little stunt pulled by St. Mary's Academy is not surprising to anyone with a knowledge of this group.

The Society is well-financed by extreme right wingers around the world, so do not think of the Academy in Kansas as some splinter group.

This is yet another example of why the ERA Amendment was a waste of time...

Why?

Because if people took the time to read the goddamned constitution closely they'd see why cases like these are already addressed by

And since it's a Bible-belt state; one would have to be a complete idiot not to inform the 'good folks' who sponsored & supported such discriminatory legislation that they were in fact..."DISPLEASING DIVINE PROVIDENCE" (See Treaty of Paris, 1783)

If someone thumps the Bible at you; always look for the Faustian angle that makes the opponent so remorseful & ashamed (in the eyes of God) that he wished he were never born.

Edmond Dantes: "I wish to be providence myself, for I feel that the most beautiful, noblest, most sublime thing in the world, is to recompense and punish."

It's so difficult to get adult volunteers as it is, without alienating half of your volunteer pool on such an arbitrary distinction.

And for women not having authority over males, have you ever met a nun?

what would phillip wylie say?

Hasn't Kansas made itself look foolish enough by now? Are they competing with Florida for "weirdest state"? These Christofascists are dragging the state down into the abyss. Will anyone fight back?

They didn't do it to their basketball team. They did it to a referee from an outside organization and that is why we just cannot ignore it. The solution if this continues is to prevent their participation in public activity associations and games. Ostracize them from the rest of society and then see how quickly they change their tune. And if they don't change, f*ck'em. At least we won't have to hear from them anymore.

Why is this so hard to understand? Where do you think the referees come from? They don't just sprout from the middle of the court and disappear at the buzzer. If you expect to participate in society at large then you better be ready to leave your sexist bullshit at the door. If they want to have their own basketball games, in their own organization, with all male referees - no problem. There is no argument here. But these referees are not part of the school in question but the public at large and working on behalf of a public organization comprised of some 300 members. Is this still not clear?

There seems to be a disconnect here. First, I don't care what they do in their buildings. That isn't the problem. The problem is this school is a semi-member of a larger athletics activity organization. If it wants to be a member of this organization, and society, then it has to make a basic concession. Otherwise, it needs to remove itself from the equation.

They speak Farsi in Iran, and it is most definitely not Arabic. You are also highly mistaken in assuming that they teach their Iranian children not to listen to women. Despite a repressive Islamic culture, there are more Iranian females in the universities than males and women make up a great part of the engineers, lawyers and doctors of Iran. Iranian men do not go around covering their ears saying 'I don't hear you.'

That is a bit of a generalization about how everybody was raised and there is no need to shout. There as we speak unknown numbers of children living with other children in abandoned buildings in inner cities without adults due mostly to the war on drugs their parents are either incarcerated or dead. We eat our own in this country. Don't be surprised if many Americans are as backwards as you think they are. Don't be surprised if most of us are more backwards then we will admit to ourselves.

Unless these kids are Ron Artests, a ref doesnt need authority, she just needs to call fouls. I have plenty of female refs in my day and when you are out on the court you dont think about sexual politics, you think about playing a sport you love. I imagine this reg is more aimed at nut-job fathers and coaches.

it's a private school.

Ah, the uber-Catholics, holier than thou and me and even the Pope. These are the nutballs who plague every Catholic school. They train their kids to sniff out anything they consider unorothdox and complain to the principal, the superintendent and the bishop. Most everyone sees them as a pain in the rear, but everyone has to waste time on it, and every so often they get someone fired. The worst I know of was a wonderful grade school teacher who was fired for being gay. He was discrete and in a long term partnership and taught kids too young to know about sex, but they sniffed and pushed and insisted - to his credit the principal supported him and refused to do the dirty work, but he got fired anyway.
