Mike Huckabee would be proud. How can you be anything but disgusted with this sort of misogynistic behavior? This is one of those stories that makes you yell at your tee vee, but I was happy to see that all the Kansans interviewed in this clip were as upset by this as I was. It is a private, religious school and it's not clear if they have a written policy on the matter and it appears school officials aren't commenting.

The people in the video are surprised that people could possibly think this way in this day and age? Really? We still say that if this is part of someone's "faith" that we should "respect" it. And most people in this country still extol the Bible, when the Bible actually does advocate a system of morals and norms that values women less than men. Why should it be a surprise that there are some people who take the text of the Bible at its word, and then feel that their faith demands "respect?"
I live in KS/MO and have been to St. Mary's the local non-catholics call people in this branch of (very close to nazi) uber-catholics - fruits. Funny thing too is that this is where Timothy McVeigh spent alot of time before the OKC bombing...
I do believe this makes them eligible for 'faith' funding from the Bush administration. After all, one wouldn't want these ideals, based in twisted fantasy to fade away. The religious fanatics of the US are equally disturbing as any religious freak the world over. And they're all so sure that they're right, they're willing to kill you for not believing their tripe.

This is one private Catholic school's "policy" -- not an entire state's. I am a former 6-year resident of Kansas, and lived less than 40 miles from Oskaloosa. Folks in the Sunflower State are not as backwoods as the likes of the fundies living there would have you believe.
As far as your suggestion that Kansas "should ceded [sic] from the Union, and move them [sic] to Saudia Arabia" goes, you would do well to study history, in addition to basic English grammar.
Kansas spilled a lot of blood before and during the Civil War to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.

Amazing how quick many are to trash Kansas in general. Sure, they're the same one's that had their moment with teaching creationism as a science, but I would remind everyone this is, so far, an isolated issue with a regressive church.
St. Mary's Kansas is a weird little town that is not Roman Catholic. These guys were tossed out for being too rigid. In many ways it resembles the Mormon cults in rural Arizona and Utah. It's a very small town run by a really crazy priest. I think there is a predisposition for religious obsessive compulsive disorder there. I'm not sure what all the excitement is about here - Kansas is actually rapidly becoming a "blue" state. You might be surprised if you actually went to Kansas. Lawrence Ks is one of the most progressive little cities in the country - a bit like Madison Wisconsin. I don't live in Ks, but do live about 4 blocks into Missouri. Ks is more progressive than my neighborhood by a long shot.
First of all, these were "boys," not men. And if we're going to be asked to support the basis for the school's decision, does it not follow that mothers have no authority over their sons?
But it was good to see that a sense of fair play and existed outside of the narrow-minded school administration. I presume they are all, or mostly, men. And men will be boys, you know.

Thank-you for posting this. Unbelievable, non? This school has taken it upon themselves to have a school policy which violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Question: Do you think they have even heard of the Civil Rights Act?
Suggestion: Before becoming a school board member, you have to pass a test showing that you have basic knowledge of U.S. history, that you at least know that there is a Constitution that provides the legal framework for our country's laws, and that you understand the difference between a religious belief and a scientifically based theory.
If you've never seen this one then I can highly recomend it as an informative 7 minutes of history, and probabbly something the obama swiftboaters will be using.

I am a fan of French life and society and do not find it very mature to witness your bashing of France. France is a beautiful country with gorgeous architecture and rich history. Don't think that the St. Mary's Academy is representative of Kansas at all. (In fact, many of their students come from throughout the United States.) Most Kansans think that the people associated with this group are religious freaks. This schismatic group disavows all the reforms of the Roman Catholic Church since the 1960s and have invented their own theology.
For those that take delight in calling all Kansans fundamentalist hicks, consider that our two-term governor, Kathleen Sebelius, is a Democrat, and gave the Democratic response to the 2008 State of the Union speech. Two of our four U. S. representatives are also Democrats. (One of them is Nancy Boyda, who represents the district which contains St. Mary's.) Huckabee may have won the Kansas Republican caucus, but he received less than 1/2 the number of votes that Obama received in winning the Democratic caucus. The Democratic caucus was held on a Tuesday night during a blizzard, while the Republican caucus was held on a warm, sunny Saturday morning. Over twice as many Democrats participated as Republicans.

Kansas is pretty tolerant. Oskaloosa, which is not far from St. Mary's was the first city in America to have an all female city government, in the 1880s I think. So don't call Kansas anti-women. Close by in geography, around 1900 was published The Lucifer, the first free-love publication in America.
We tolerate, but don't any of us like, Fred Phelps. We know him for what he is--a blowhard worthless SOB with an obsession. He is also nice to compare anti-gay Republicans to. Kansas Republicans hate it when we do that. Fred incidentally is a registered Democrat the last time anyone looked. St. Mary's has out catholiced the Roman Catholic Church, as it was part of, I think, Archbishop Lefebvre's movement that John Paul II kicked out of the church. Creationists win because Kansans are used to pulling the R lever and getting a moerate like Bob Dole or Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker. They are learning. States don't change from Red to Blue that fast. Republicans are a bit thick-headed.
But most Kansans are pretty down-to-earth and sane. It was a female Kansas Populist who once said Kansans needed to raise less corn and more hell. We also had the Civil War here from 1854 to 1865, longer than anywhere else in America by far. We fought slavery with sword and rifle longer than the rest of the nation. Jim Crow died in large part because Kansans didn't like it. And check out the Kansas court cases on racial equality before the SCOTUS took the Brown case.

The Civil Rights Act is the law. Yes, you have to abide by it, even if you don't accept federal money. As far as I know, our Two Americas does not extend to two separate sets of laws, one for religious extremists and the other for the rest of us who are apparently hellbound.

The private school in question is participating in a public organization that is on the verge of kicking them out for this incident. Good for them by the way. Sexists a**holes can play basketball among themselves.
The head scarf issue is slowly expanding into the public sphere. Schools in France requiring a dress code have come under attack for not allowing Muslim students to wear their chosen attire in violation of school policy. If it is a public school this is a difficult question to resolve, especially in America, as our government is not supposed to make any laws respecting or discriminating against the practice of religion.
There is no end to this type of bickering though. If you grant special rights to the Muslims, then the Christians will want theirs, and eventually the Scientologists will get in on the action, and it is infinite regression from that point because god, how many are religions are in this world, and how are we supposed to distinguish between the valid ones and in the invalid ones? The answer in recent years seems to be grant special consideration to those religions with many adherents - especially if they happen to harbor extremely radical and violent factions.
I have got an idea though. How about we give no special consideration to religions in our public schools. I mean none at all. Extreme? Yep, but when you feel the other side pulling you slowly into the abyss, sometimes the answer is to pull back just as hard.

Everyone loves it here, it has an amazing music and arts scene, very progressive politics (and is hated and picketed by the fundies you all speak of each year). Kansas could very well go blue... if the nominee is Barack. We Democrats went 75% for him, our Democratic govenor supports him, and we sent a democrat to congress in 2006. I seem to recollect while I was being raised Catholic that nuns had authority over boys and girls, often wielding a nasty ruler to discipline any recalcitrant kids. I grew up a Catholic in a Catholic school system and non of this wierd retro fundamentalist crap was going on then. In fact the nuns dominated my grade school and had plenty of authority of the males. The Charasmatic Christian movement started sweeping into some segments of the Catholic Faith just when i was becoming an adult. In fact that movement helped me become an atheist (for which i shal ever be gratefull). The Catholic Church in America has been subverted, plain and simple. And that is saying something considering how fucked up it was to begin with.

Ive been in games and seen games that are badly judged by both guys and girls so I really dont think it makes a dif who does it.
The only place I might actually see this being plausable is football where not many girls play or are involved.

St. Mary's Academy is part of the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to the Vatican 2 reforms. This society is not centered in Kansas, so don't associate it with Fred Phelps. They have churches all over the place.
This is the group that Mel Gibson and his father are members. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the society is dangerously anti-Semitic.
It is easy (and correct) to characterize the Society of St. Pius X as a hate group and by that description, one is not anti-Catholic (Rome excommunicated Lefebve) nor is one anti-Christian. This little stunt pulled by St. Mary's Academy is not surprising to anyone with a knowledge of this group.
The Society is well-financed by extreme right wingers around the world, so do not think of the Academy in Kansas as some splinter group.
This is yet another example of why the ERA Amendment was a waste of time...
Why?

Well, I hate to say it, but a PRIVATE school. Doesn't that mean they can do what they want in regard to their own basketball team, REGARDLESS of how ignorant, idiotic and 'dark ages' it might be?
If it were a public school that my dollars paid for, then I wold be in the streets raising hell, but as it s a private school, I could care less. Let's all point and laugh and ridicule them for being so ignorant.

They didn't do it to their basketball team. They did it to a referee from an outside organization and that is why we just cannot ignore it. The solution if this continues is to prevent their participation in public activity associations and games. Ostracize them from the rest of society and then see how quickly they change their tune. And if they don't change, f*ck'em. At least we won't have to hear from them anymore.
Part of the deal with that 'pesky' 1st Ammendment.
Everyone gets to have that freedom. Even those who would deny others freedom.
However it is a private school. As long as they don't try to play that card at an 'away' game.

Why is this so hard to understand? Where do you think the referees come from? They don't just sprout from the middle of the court and disappear at the buzzer. If you expect to participate in society at large then you better be ready to leave your sexist bullshit at the door. If they want to have their own basketball games, in their own organization, with all male referees - no problem. There is no argument here. But these referees are not part of the school in question but the public at large and working on behalf of a public organization comprised of some 300 members. Is this still not clear?

There seems to be a disconnect here. First, I don't care what they do in their buildings. That isn't the problem. The problem is this school is a semi-member of a larger athletics activity organization. If it wants to be a member of this organization, and society, then it has to make a basic concession. Otherwise, it needs to remove itself from the equation.

This school is run by the "Society of Pius X" also known as the Lefevrists. They refuse to recognize the authority of any pope in the last forty years (since Vatican II), and they have a curious history with James Kopp, the domestic terrorist and killer.
Even by Cardinal Rottweiler -- sorry, Pope Benedict's standards they are loons.
And of course, we are all shocked that this happened in Kansas . . .

That is a bit of a generalization about how everybody was raised and there is no need to shout. There as we speak unknown numbers of children living with other children in abandoned buildings in inner cities without adults due mostly to the war on drugs their parents are either incarcerated or dead. We eat our own in this country. Don't be surprised if many Americans are as backwards as you think they are. Don't be surprised if most of us are more backwards then we will admit to ourselves.
Unless these kids are Ron Artests, a ref doesnt need authority, she just needs to call fouls. I have plenty of female refs in my day and when you are out on the court you dont think about sexual politics, you think about playing a sport you love. I imagine this reg is more aimed at nut-job fathers and coaches.

Ah, the uber-Catholics, holier than thou and me and even the Pope. These are the nutballs who plague every Catholic school. They train their kids to sniff out anything they consider unorothdox and complain to the principal, the superintendent and the bishop. Most everyone sees them as a pain in the rear, but everyone has to waste time on it, and every so often they get someone fired. The worst I know of was a wonderful grade school teacher who was fired for being gay. He was discrete and in a long term partnership and taught kids too young to know about sex, but they sniffed and pushed and insisted - to his credit the principal supported him and refused to do the dirty work, but he got fired anyway.
