Al-Sadr threatens to end cease-fire in Iraq

Al-Sadr's cease-fire has been a huge key to the decline in violence in Iraq and this would be a major blow:

Anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr may let a six-month cease-fire expire as soon as Saturday, a move that could send his Shiite militia fighters back to the streets and jeopardize security gains that have led to a sharp decline in violence..

Al-Sadr's Shiite Mahdi Army is among the most powerful militias in Iraq, and the cease-fire he ordered last August has been credited with helping reduce violence around Iraq by 60 percent or more in the past six months.

Sheik Salah al-Obeidi, a spokesman for al-Sadr in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, said that if the cleric failed to issue a statement by Saturday saying the cease-fire was extended, "then that means the freeze is over." Al-Sadr's followers would be free to resume attacks.

On an Internet site representing al-Sadr, al-Obeidi said that al-Sadr "either will announce the extension or will stay silent and not announce anything. If stays silent, that means that the freeze is over."

Al-Obeidi said that message "has been conveyed to all Mahdi Army members nationwide."...read on

Great! Let the ethnic cleansing resume or has it still been going on? Just wait till McLame brings in the cavalry! Yeehaw!

The Shiites dont want us occupying their country any more than Americans would like Shiites occupying this one.

And after the egregious examples of murder, torture and daily attacks against these people, who in the hell can blame them?

Only the neocons and their base of idiot, FOX watching supporters, as well as many of the young troops thrown into a maelstrom there they try and survive. Those in the military who would like to state otherwise are cowed into submission, but not all of them

Frist!

bush must have called al-sadr and told him the fisa bill
was not renewed, so would he please kill some Americans
to prove he is right. bush IS in bed with the terrorists
and has been from the start. please don't call this
a conspiracy theory, when most of the terrorists in the
911 attack were from saudi arabia and bush has done
NOTHING to address this.

Oh well on the Frist. Looks like that surge may come in handy after all.

get my point?

If the cease fire is over how will McCain spin it? He has been taking credit for being right about the surge and that it has worked. This cease fire is what lowered the fatalities and yet bush, Betrayus and McCain have been taking credit for it. We need to get out....NOW!

I hope (for the men women and children of our country and theirs), al-Sadr does not declare to end the cease fire. But what the hell did our presidunce expect?
Peace to all. Fear for the corrupt. (Bush Co.)

Didn't anybody send him the damned MEMO?

THE SURGE IS WORKING, GODDAMMIT! THE SURGE IS WORKING!

I do.
Especially this one..."Killed Al Qaida's #2 over and over and over..." I thought I was imagining it! But they do, they kill Al Qaeda's Number Two man like REGULARLY.

My son was there, he turned 20 in Baquba, and he's due back later this year. My blood runneth colder all the time because it's not just my son. All of them are "mine."

Quite a coincidence; our 200 billion dollar "SURGE" success and Al-Sadr’s Shiite Mahdi Army's cease fire

Speaking as a soldier actually in the green zone right now, I am not looking foreward to saturday, and thats my day off too damnit.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED!

I can hardly wait for the "October Surprise" (Iran? Cuba? Iraq again? Kosovo?)

...is it 1/20/09 yet?

I feel sorry for the civilians who are left and are unable to leave the country (the poor).

Stay safe bro.

So the cease fire with al-Sadr is the real cause behind the decrease in attacks against U.S. forces, not the Surge escalation? Someone has some explaining to do.

I've been against killing Al Sadr, figuring that there will just be another Al Sadr popping up who could be worse. But this time around I'm leaning towards having a house fall on top of him should he declare any kind of animus towards us. A really, really, really big house just to send a message to whoever wants to take his place. And if that doesn't send a strong enough message, then just raze 50 square miles of Iraq surrounding these Shiite extremists and make a canal there so we can more easily fill our oil tankers.
I've had enough of these a-holes.

I read about this in a posting at the Huffington Post written by ambassador Marc Ginsberg. In his opening paragraph he refers to al Sadr as "the evil Shiite cleric Moqtada al Sadr". Way to frame the debate with inflammatory adjectives, Mr. Ambassador. I think in future we should refer to George Bush as "the evil American president George Bush" or John McCain as "the pouty Republican presidential contender John McCain". Or Marc Ginsberg as "the fatuous American ambassador Marc Ginsberg".

how long before he decides to cease fire you know its coming

whatever

how can this be with the surge working so well?

Well, you can't blame the guy. He told the US he'd cease fire for six months exactly...six months ago. Give the man credit: he holds to a deadline.

hahahahahahah

just repeat over and over....the surge is working....the surge is working....the surge is working

bilhelm-X Great! Let the ethnic cleansing resume or has it still been going on? Just wait till McLame brings in the cavalry! Yeehaw!

Not to worry, Obama will handle it!

Obama is campaigning on HOPE and CHANGE.

The HOPE to CHANGE us all into Muslims.

What exactly do you think is going to change on that date?

Chris @ 20:

whatever

I can't add to that.

hank @ 24

What the heck is that supposed to mean?

Sadr called a cease-fire six months ago? I didn't know that.

I thought the decreased violence was being credited to Bush's blood splurge.

Looks like now we'll find out if more US troops + unleashed Shiites = less violence.
I have my doubts.

What!?!? You mean the SURGE was working because the people with guns were sitting on them waiting for a better day to fight? That's news to Chimpy and Johnny McKillsalot. Gee, if the bad guys decide to actually fight the 180K troops we have, we might need another SURGE. Yep, more guys, more guns more killing. That's always the answer.

It's unreal we are still in Iraq. We need to get the fuck out now!

Poor soldiers, paying for Mr. Fuckup’s bullshit! Come home however you can now! This war was based on BULLSHIT! The sooner you all realize that the more fortunate your future will be. I'm talking mass desertion folks! This god damn mother fucker doesn't deserve one ounce of respect, much less one half-ounce of military loyalty for the shit he's pulled! Sorry but there is even a time when the US military has to question, "WTF Charles?".

LAURA... MY SURGE IS GOING LIMP... YOU GOT SOME SPLAINING TO DO

Its been happening, just not on tv. Therefore in America, it isnt happening.

Question to the right wingnut trolls....

If Al Sadr ends the cease fire....does that still mean the 'surge is working'??

Oh dear, it looks like the surge needs a surge.

can't say I'm shocked and wont be surprised oh, I don't know, come June right at the height of election time that all hell breaks loose again

So, basically, it isn't the "surge" that has been responsible for a drop in violence, it was the forebearance of Al Sadr. I wonder how that toadying sycophant Petraeous will spin this one.

What gives? Is the check late? Does he want a salary surge to keep the surge working? You get what you buy from the terrist sorta guy!

There was a cease fire in Iraq? I guess all those dead people are just in my imagination then.

I wonder how much the U.S. paid Al-Sadr for the six month cease fire? I wonder how much he wants for an extension?

Answer to first question:

Tens of millions for sure.

Answer to second question:

Double the previous amount .
If you were in his shoes would you do something like that?
I would .

Anyway I am sure Al-Sadr and his militia have re-armed successfully.I never trusted that guy but if you want to meddle in middle east affairs this is what you have to deal with.

Yeah, I'd heard about that; the reassessment of the story, that is. Of course, will this story get as much play as the first one? I think we both know the answer to that one.

The interested parties already threw their initial knee-jerk conjecture out there for the American public just to get it into their minds and watch: even if this story is eventually debunked, months from now you'll have some mouth-breathing neocon at a family gathering blathering on about how "inhuman the enemy is" in sending the "mentally challenged to blow people up". Shit, there are enough people who still think that Obama took the oath of office on the Koran to make my blood boil!

Don't worry about our men and women, they will not be harmed as long as they do not dissagree with duty. The Sunnis are being paid to just kill civilians, this is admitted. Money was paid originally to attack are troops, but since the surge started the Sunnis were even more not to attack.

no kidding. If our stupid mainstream media censors things most people would have no clue what's going on.
