I think it's a mistake Democrats routinely make. They look for the "most electable" candidate, rather than the one they like the best. You suggested that John Edwards was the electable one by noting that he was a white male southernor, and that Clinton's gender and political baggage and Obama's race and inexperience made them less electable.

But searching for the electable candidate is a wild goose chase. Edwards' being a white male southernor does not shield him from the crazy attacks and smears that the Republicans will inevitably use. On the flip side, the apparently unelectable candidates can indeed run fantastic campaigns despite the inevitable smears.

Bill Clinton would strike people as a very unelectable candidate on paper. Philanderer. Pot smoker. Draft dodger. Etc. In addition, the main planks in his platform in 1992 were universal health care and gays in the military. The Republicans used every smear in the books against him, but they didn't work. Why? Because Clinton ran a fantastic "rapid response" campaign, and always hit the ground running and entered the ring swinging.

Contrast that with John Kerry. So many people learned the wrong lesson from the Clinton years. They wanted to avoid the smear labels. They wanted a war hero. Howard Dean was too liberal and too crazy. We went with Kerry, and what did the Republicans do? They turned his service in Viet Nam into a bad thing. Successfully. Why? Because Kerry wasn't the campaign fighter that Clinton was.

And throughout the Republicans-in-Congress years, we kept thinking that the right strategy was to mold ourselves into Republican-light. It would make us more electable. In fact, it made us less electable. Any strong Democrat who runs a good campaign can win. We didn't start winning again until we started running strong Democrats in districts we had pretty much written off altogether.

It appears to me that you think that had we stuck with the southern white male, we'd have this all locked up. But since we went with less electable candidates, we're taking a huge risk. I couldn't disagree more. Edwards is just as vulnerable to the Republican attack machine as Obama and Clinton. Every Democrat is. It's only a matter of the campaign we use to fight back that will determine whether we take the White House.

Because Kerry wasn't the campaign fighter that Clinton was.

And throughout the Republicans-in-Congress years, we kept thinking that the right strategy was to mold ourselves into Republican-light. It would make us more electable. We didn't start winning again until we started running strong Democrats in districts we had pretty much written off altogether.

It appears to me that you think that had we stuck with the southern white male, we'd have this all locked up. But since we went with less electable candidates, we're taking a huge risk. I couldn't disagree more. Edwards is just as vulnerable to the Republican attack machine as Obama and Clinton. Every Democrat is. It's only a matter of the campaign we use to fight back that will determine whether we take the White House.

You're largely missing my point. It's not that the ready-made, obvious slurs against Edwards are necessarily as difficult to overcome as those ready-to-go against Clinton or Obama. It's that you can't confine yourself to those ready-made, obvious slurs, and think the Republicans will stick to that.

Sliming and smearing is simply how the Republicans play the game. You think that Edwards is more electable than the other two based on the perceptions of him you have now. But you can't base anything on that. The Republicans have no problem exaggerating or outright lying in order to make Edwards look bad. Because they do it to anyone. Sliming and smearing in order to win elections is the only thing they do well, and it's an equal opportunity endeavor for them.

You think they'll stick with his haircut, gender role and affiliation with the trial lawyers? They'll take each one of those things and blow them way out of proportion with help from the media noise machine. Then they'll just make up a whole bunch of other things. It's just what they do. It's not about Edwards himself. It's directed at anyone who is making her choice between Obama and Clinton on the basis of perceived electability.

Among Edwards, Obama and Clinton, I was prepared to vote for Edwards as well. But he had withdrawn before my state voted.
