Well, we still have to fight for what is ours because when we give it up someone makes a shitload of money.
I just love the "Freedom isn't Free" routine. I've seen it spraypainted on local railroad trestles. It reminds me of the party slogan from Orwell's "1984."
"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength."

McCain was still married and living with his wife in 1979 while, according to The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof, "aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich." McCain divorced his wife, who had raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam, then launched his political career with his new wife's family money. In 2000, McCain managed to deflect media questioning about his first marriage with a deft admission of responsibility for its failure. It's possible that the age of the offense and McCain's charmed relationship with the press will pull him through again, but Giuliani and Gingrich may face a more difficult challenge. Both conducted well-documented affairs in the last decade--while still in public office.

True, but I don't consider assholes trying to take my freedom as a cost. Freedom is only lost when a person gives it up. If you fight and die against those who would rob your rights, you live and die free.

You are correct, i wish everyone grasped it as you do.
Why support the troops if you're against the war? Seriously, those soldiers are adults and are knowingly committing a crime against humanity. No, I will *not* support the troops.
I have long been a fan of Mr. Fish. He carries on a great deconstructionist tradition, taking what is given and showing it back to us to ask whether we really want it.

Some of the most dedicated workers for peace and justice were once in the military. Howard Zinn being just one of them.
"No flag is big enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people"
I think it's safe to assume this wasn't a wingnut's car.
Never know - the car could have belonged to an anti-choice brownshirt - the language is just that vague.
As do I - the point is that we're if we're in a serious effort to decry bland pleasantries, we'd better not be caught hoisting our own, or we'd look pretty damn foolish.
Doubt it.
Support our ideals. Support our Constitution. Support our workers. Support our veterans. Support education. Support the dismantlement of the corporate press.
Anderson Cooper , before you claim some kind of hit piece on poor little John McCain , first tell what the story is about , concerning his alleged AFFAIR , you sound like F O X .
Especially when you clowns have given him a FREE ride , virtually never mentioning criticisms from the left and we all know what Hillary's and Obama's " problems' are .
Support our ideals. Support our Constitution. Support our workers. Support our veterans. Support education. Support the dismantlement of the corporate press.
Support C&L.
Support our support systems.
And for God's sake whatever you do, support the support beam!
The blogosphere is abuzz with the New York Times story about presumptive GOP nominee John McCain and the nature of his relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman. It remains unclear why the paper sat on the story since December. But whether or not the New York Times has had the goods on him, it didn't stop the Times from endorsing John McCain in the state's Republican primary last month.
Sad to say, but our troops are part of the problem
Agreed.
I know, but it is awfully difficult for me to criticize a member of the military in a combat situation. The choices are very hard once you get to that point. You can refuse and face prison, dishonorable discharge and worse. It is up to the rest of us to keep them out of harm's way.

You can choose not to enlist. Even as an active member, as a human being, you should be willing to give up your job before being part of the machine that kills civilians and destroys families. Sorry no sympathy here. After a certain age you take responsibility for the consequences of your actions. Very few Americans are asking them to fight.

Ok, as a citizen you should be willing to chain yourself to a tank being sent over to Iraq or to destroy a nuclear weapon. Have you looked into doing that? Are you clear about what the consequenses are if you do?
Have you thought about destroying Selective Service System records? Did you know that if you did it would be a Felony Destruction of Government Property charge? That you could face ten plus years?

What are you waiting for?
Your logic is twisted. I'm not advocating anything illegal like you suggest. I am advocating the opposite: an end to the aggression (which I believe to be illegal).

I am also advocating the end of this war, but i refuse to put the responsibility on somewone else. You are blaming the troops. I strongly disagree. They are doing what they have been trained to do. To do otherwise would risk imprisonment, a record excluding them from employment for the rest of their lives.
What are YOU willing to risk to end this war? You are asking a hell of a lot from other people, what about you?
It is hard, isn't it? To imagine yourself taking a stand so strongly that you could go to jail for five or ten years. That is what you are asking of these folks.

I have sacrificed and so have you.
Believe me, our country is in deep shit, we just haven't felt the pain yet. We are potentially bankrupt within a decade (destruction of the economy by the hands of our elected officials) and we've created enemies for many years to come (but the military you're so proud of).
Bottom line: You and everyone else has been made to sacrifice their well being this year and many to come. The punch line: All this trouble comes without your consent.
Tell me, how do you propose to "support the troops"?? By wishful slogans? How about voting for a truly anti-war candidate. (Hint none exists in front runner status).
I know people who did it during the Vietnam War. Draft resisters. They did "Zip Six" sentences. That means from zero to six years. They had no idea when they would be released. Most of them did the full six years.

Last time I checked, we have an all-volunteer army. The keyword is "volunteer".

You do not know me very well, that is not your fault. I am totally opposed to us having a military. I am not proud of our military. I support the people who for whatever reason end up on the front lines, whether it be in the soup kitchens or the battlefield. I am a pacifist. I am oppossed to all wars. I have also run shelters full of homeless vets and i have a fairly good idea what they go through.
What we need is not blame, we need organized resistance to the machine. Our soldiers are not our enemy.
I can't believe that torture is even an issue being discussed... It's even more outrageous that the GOP candidate actually supports committing war crimes.
Supposedly they hit that satellite during the eclipse. Mike Malloy Show bumpered with a tune off of The Dark Side Of The Moon (the tune with the lyric: There really is no dark side of the Moon. It's all dark) ... funny!
But the reports about it originating from the defense department about it sound like all those reports that we've hit the 3rd highest level Al Qaida leader ... 3 days or 3 weeks later they end up admitting that all they killed were innocent civilians or soldiers fighting on our side. It wouldn't suprise me in the least if they come back out in a few days and announced that we actually shot down the space station.

Agreed. However, I think that empty sloganeering of "supporting the troops" is very misguided. Like you I believe war in the vast majority of cases is absolutely unjustified. I believe in talking, trading, interacting, debating, with all people around the world.
My only point, which is started by the picture attached to the thread, is that the suggestion that we should blindly support the troops (because that somehow elevates us to super-patriot) is a ridiculous premise. Of course soldiers aren't all guilty of the crime called the Iraq war; but to say that they are not part of the problem and that we should "support" the troops is ludicrous.

I have never used the slogan, "Support Our Troops" in any context. If you look at the cartoon closely i think you will see that using it is killing those who do.
I do not believe in war under any circumstances. I believe in non violent resistance. (It works almost exactly as well, sometimes better.)

The creator can't balance his checkbook; that is why the clergy is always asking for money.
You do not change the world by critizing the actions of others.
You lead by example.
Exactly.
In the words of a former member of the Weather Underground, who years later had finally wised up, "We cherished hate as a badge of moral superiority and you can't build a movement on hate."

Support our troops, stop asking them to die for lies. Stop asking them to kill for oil. Stop asking them to be pawns in the genocide of Muslims. 1,000,000 Iraqis dead and counting. Makes Saddam look like a grade school librarian.

I've wondered about what happened at Kent State, too, whether the Ohio guard really meant to shoot those students.
Not that it helps us, the Iraqis or the rest of the world, and it's not like the people around bush jr. will inform him of the poll - he disdains polls anyway, just like anything else remotely democratic...

They did. i saw the video. The commander ordered them to load up with live ammo, he ordered them to fire and at least two National Guardsmen targeted a guy with a big peace sign on the back of his jacket.
After yesterdays ambush of Texas state Sen. Watson, Tweety has US. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D - MO) on Hardball today to ask the same question about Sen. Obama's record. Tweety Round2

I listened to the audio which Alan Canfora recently discovered, dozens of times, and still couldn't clearly make out the order to fire.
This who freedom thing, this five day work week we used to have?
People died for that.
We let it go.
What do you think happened, bro?
MTV, video games, American Idol, O.J. Simpson, Britney Spears, Monica Lewinsky.
Anything to distract us from the issues of the day and changing our educational system from one that taught students to think (which really caused problems in the 1960's and 1970's) into a system that taught students to make money.

I have watched recreations with video and i can assure you that the commander could have sneezed and those troops would have fired. He had them fired up.

How is that working out, America?
Great for the few, shitty for the many. How few are the few and how organized/coordinated do you think they are? Or is it more of a confluence of loose alliances and cyclic economic/political/social awareness? Or?

I visit C&L on a daily basis and I love reading the comments. While I usually don't post unless I know that part of a story is wrong first hand or have some other fact based "something" to contribute,....Damn it cheezbox, you pissed me off good and now you get my opinion.
I don't give two shits if you support me or anybody else. That being said, your assertion that we "adults" are committing crimes against humanity strikes me as a very un-thought-out, self-riteuous, smug, flat out shitty thing to say. Believe it or not some of us joined even before 9/11. Yes alot of shit has happened that i never would have dreamed of and it fucking sucks. If I "act according to my concience" before Jun 2012, I get to go to Leavenworth and try to explain to my 2 year old son why his dad is away through 1 inch thick glass. As far as cocientous objector status? My best friend has been in the process for TWO YEARS while they repeatedly "lose his paperwork." Mike Wallace wants to do a story on him but he refused so as not to make his life any worse than it is (which couldn't be that much).
Here's the reality cheezbox: The military is made up of all different kinds of people- just like the rest of the country.
There are some sadistic assholes that "just want to kill ragheads"-just like the rest of the country
There are those who have changed their minds, been disillusioned and are against the war- just like the rest of the country
You may as well say that Americans are commiting crimes against humanity because "we" Elected bush. What? That doesn't make sense to you? Well, it doesn't make sense to me to submit myself to the Hague for joining up in 1998.
Yes, I have killed. I fucking hate that fact. I wish it never happened and it literally tears me apart inside when I can't stop thinking about it, which is often. If I had the moment to do over- I'd still do it. The men I killed were attacking my own countrymen and while I am fully aware that those men were fathers, brothers, sons, etc., so are the men they were trying to kill as well. Men who joined because they wanted to serve their country, or wanted money for college or maybe to follow their fathers footsteps. Men just like you, just like me, just like Xoites and everyone else here. If i'm a warcriminal then we all are. I'm not going to argue the pros and cons of pacifism with you-i'm still to pissed to make a logical argument. All i can really say is that i think what you have been saying is Bullshit and that i hope that you rethink your convictions.

Ok, that sounded pretty fucking trite. Listen, i can understand why anybody would disagree with me. I am an opinionated mother fucker. Sometimes i actually do know what i am talking about. “Shorter lists are funnier” generally holds true, and very well may re the McList. C&L’ers are diverse and eclectic, and I’ve enjoyed many lols, LOLs, LOL!s and Ha ha’s here. I’m reluctant to exclude any McEntry, ’cause they’re all funny/pointed/cathartic to varying degrees, and the sheer length of the entire list (posted Tuesdays and Fridays) has a humorous quality of its own.
We are also generating denigrating McMemes, some of which may be useful, in a memie sort of way. The thuglicontards are very aware of the usefulness of denigrating memes, and it won’t hurt to put out a few of our own.
That being said, a Top 11, Dirty Dozen, etc. are considerations, for those (myself included, usually) who like things condensed to essentials.

Left Coaster, 2006:
What a creep.
xoites defends Constitution @ 5:
True, but I don't consider assholes trying to take my freedom as a cost. Freedom is only lost when a person gives it up. If you fight and die against those who would rob your rights, you live and die free.

Why support the troops if you're against the war? Seriously, those soldiers are adults and are knowingly committing a crime against humanity. No, I will *not* support the troops.

For the details, see:

You can choose not to enlist. Even as an active member, as a human being, you should be willing to give up your job before being part of the machine that kills civilians and destroys families. Sorry no sympathy here. After a certain age you take responsibility for the consequences of your actions. Very few Americans are asking them to fight.
CheezeBox @ 42:
Ok, as a citizen you should be willing to chain yourself to a tank being sent over to Iraq or to destroy a nuclear weapon. Have you looked into doing that? Are you clear about what the consequenses are if you do?
Have you thought about destroying Selective Service System records? Did you know that if you did it would be a Felony Destruction of Government Property charge? That you could face ten plus years?
What are you waiting for?
I choose to, at the very least, not be part of the problem. Support the troops? For what?
For the bravery of defeating an unarmed nation?
For the courage to steal another nation's oil?
For the valor of doing Bush's bidding?
You've got to be kidding. These people are certainly not worth supporting. They are part of this war crime.
CheezeBox @ 45:
But you sit here in judgement of them while you act as a coward.
What the hell are you risking to end this war?
xoites defends Constitution @ 44:
Your logic is twisted. I'm not advocating anything illegal like you suggest. I am advocating the opposite: an end to the aggression (which I believe to be illegal).
xoites defends Constitution @ 47:
What are we sacrificing?? Let's see:
1) Destruction of our economy
2) Habeaus Corpus
3) Illegal wiretapping
4) Secret prisons around the world
5) A divided America
oh, and some of our fellow human beings are being killed as a result of an unjustified war.
Enough sacrifice for you?
CheezeBox @ 48:
I am also advocating the end of this war, but i refuse to put the responsibility on somewone else. You are blaming the troops. I strongly disagree. They are doing what they have been trained to do. To do otherwise would risk imprisonment, a record excluding them from employment for the rest of their lives.
What are YOU willing to risk to end this war? You are asking a hell of a lot from other people, what about you?
One quibble with the cartoon: too many of the hands are African-American.
When you see (small) crowds of people holding those types of signs, they almost invariably tend to be all-white.
You do not change the world by critizing the actions of others.
You lead by example.
It is hard, isn't it? To imagine yourself taking a stand so strongly that you could go to jail for five or ten years. That is what you are asking of these folks.
xoites defends Constitution @ 51:
Most of them did the full six years.
xoites defends Constitution @ 56:
Last time I checked, we have an all-volunteer army. The keyword is "volunteer".
CheezeBox @ 55:
Check out this article: Torture isn’t an issue, it’s a war crime.
Sadly this Nation was born in blood, the blood of the American Revolution.
And it didn't stop there, nor did it begin there.
The New American Nation continued the expansionist policies of British whom they had just defeated.
The Imperial Project simply continued under new management.
RantingRaver @ 59:
Yes, it is a war crime and it is not debatable.

Ruthless People @ 24:

I have never used the slogan, "Support Our Troops" in any context. If you look at the cartoon closely i think you will see that using it is killing those who do.
