Prairie View A&M Student March Videos
By Nicole Belle Wednesday Feb 20, 2008 3:40pmA couple of days ago, I linked to this Burnt Orange post about the Prairie View A&M students walking 7 miles from campus to the one voting location alloted for their district. Well, we now have video of the march:
and this update:
The day closed yesterday with:
Rep: 82 voters
Dem: 472 votersIn a county that votes for Republicans in large numbers, this number is HUGE!!!!
Also, I can report that in Austin County, the race was almost equal yesterday. That is HUGE information because Republicans normally out vote Democrats (at least in primaries) at the rate of 10-to-1.

It's not the votes that matter, it's who count the votes that matter.
Joseph Stalin.
It may not be completely accurate but, neither are the voting machines.
The dems are fired up!
Good for the kids doing this walk and bringing attention to their problems.
Heavy turnout seems to be true all over Texas, though I'll be stunned if my v. Republican county (82%) in central west TX comes up with the same kinds of numbers. There'll be a lot of Ron Paul votes or write-ins though -- guaranteed!
I'm very proud and sad.
Everyone is looking for Obama for change. He has the voting record to back his criticism of the Iraq war, but like his CFR colleagues, he vows to continue the pursuit of a shadowy enemy under the vague threat of "terrorism" - a policy that has cost citizens their personal liberties, trillions in debt and untold lives. It will be more of the same with Obama - money will continue to be being printed out of thin air by the private run-for-profit Federal Reserve, while China remains leveraged with over $1 trillion in US dollar holdings. In the middle east, the CFR's blank check for U.S. military operations will deplete U.S. resources while inciting sectarian strife and anti-U.S. sentiment, ignoring the history of blowback as documented by the CIA. Obama is captivating unlike most of his competition but guarantees more of the same costly foreign policy that protects corporate interests and isolates the US. Like his colleagues, Barack Obama's stated foreign policy intentions foment the long term militarization and balkanization of the middle east while resources will continue to be spent in deficit to finance an illegal foreign policy. http://www.cfr.org/bios/11603/
Give me a freakin break.
Shouldn't there have been more votes? I mean, didn't they have something like 1000 students marching to vote?
i can't help it. That made me cry.
David @ 5:
No
I am sure there are more than about 500 hundred voters in that county...And since it is a republican district I am sure the will outnumber us more than 10-1. But it is nice to see this display, who was the PR person.
What's unfortunately being marginalized as "Black History" (instead of American History), is almost 50 years ago -- like they did 100 and 230 years ago, in the face of overwhelming odds --people faced fire hoses, dogs, and state-sanctioned terrorism for the right to stand in line and cast a vote. It's good to see that those lessons aren't forgotten today.
The pundits touted blue thumbprints in Iraq as a bold step in democracy, but there's still a long way to go here.
Make no mistake about it: there is a movement afoot in this country. The people are being mobilized. We need to take the country back and, dammit, we will!
An Average Joe @ 11:
A good first step would be to tar and feather Rupert Murdoch and put him on the next freighter to Australia.
Note to sitemonitor: sorry in advance.
There is an early voting location about a block from the Prairie View A&M campus in a Waller County owed building, but it opened after the first day of early voting when the march took place. There is also a polling location on the Prairie View A&M campus on election day.

The worst thing about Murdoch is, he set a policy that increased readership and the rest of the media decided that they had to do the same thing.
Example: NY Times hiring Bill Kristol.
I hate to be cynical but it could be that they just want to vote for Obama because he's black.

No.
Twice before I've seen prez candidates resonate with young people -- 1960 and 1968.
Question: Will the power structure in the U.S. allow the people to choose their president?
Have to believe the power structure could easily live with Hillary and, at best, live uneasily with Obama and McLover.
CD @ 15:
there is always one asshole with a shit response like this.
nothing new sameshit diffrent candidate!
CD @ 15:
So what? People always vote for the candidate that best represents their interests.
What's worse. Women voting for a female candidate, blacks voting for a black candidate or money grubbing, misogynistic, xenophobic, racists voting for repuglicans?
Is that US Route 290?!?! Cooool, good job A&M.
CD @ 15:
And you do realize many, many "Americans" will NOT vote for Mr. Obama because of his skin color.
Note to the Establishment:
Either get on board or get outta the way.
Yellow Elephant Safari @ 20:
Are you that fucking thick or just plain ignorant?!!! They are COLLEGE students. I'd like to believe that college students are smart enough -- obviously much smarter than you -- to analyze and process available information on the issues and decide who suits their ideals best. Who they vote for is none of our business.
Don't project your simple-mindedness and inability to see beyond pigment or sex onto them.
That wasn't directed at you, Yellow Elephant Safari.
William @ 24:
Are you a moron or a republican?
Oops. Same thing - moron.
William @ 25:
That was directed at you william.
And what does their being college students have to do with anything? Are you suggesting that because they're in college that Obama DOESN'T represent their interests?
Go away troll.
Sorry William.
In my haste I misread the part where you said it WASN'T directed at me.
CD @ 15:
Well you were cynical. If they did that is their right. I don't think they did, but if they did only for that reason, that is their right. Do you think people vote color in numbers like that, then you sir need to look at your attitude cus they just voted 472D and 82R. First off do you think that the 82 who registered RePUG made a mistake?
Nah, you weren't cynical, I think you were a little further down the line.
America...America. I think my country is coming back. I was caught in a traffic jam during m caucus night. A traffic jam. My town has never had a traffic jam that bad even when they have parades. What a beautiful, beautiful picture. What a beautiful, beautiful country.
This is what Michelle Obama was talking about!
Wanna try something interesting?
Go on Napster, find a good recording of "Rally "Round The Flag" and watch the march while the music is playing. One of the lines in the song is;
"We are springing to the call of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom
And we'll fill their vacant ranks with a million free men born
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom"
It'll make a chill run up your spine. These young people are our future, and I'm hoping this election will truly be a historic watershed for our country.
Be careful what you celebrate. Many Republicans registered as Democrats all over the country so they could vote against Hillary in the primaries. They hate her that much.
No Worries, Yellow Elephant Safari, I sent submit before clarifying. A little friendly-fire, but we're good :)
bt @ 33:
Ya well many registered as Dems so that they could get Hilliary into a battle with the RePUG contender. My story is as good as yours and I have no backing either.
Don't start with lots of Hillary tales, we have heard most of them. If you have been following the news instead of making, you would know that most polls and commentators have said that if Hillary goes against McBush, she wont get as many votes as Obama.
An excellent decision by the students to march. A horrible decision by the Corporate media to ignore them.

I disagree. I don't think you hate to be cynical.

lol
well at least someone here isn't being a pc dickweed.
Man you'd think even high schooldrop outs would be able to understand the word "could".
Perhaps the ploy of encouraging Republicans to cross over and vote in the Democratic primary against Hillary is working in TX.
39 kaT Says: Perhaps the ploy of encouraging Republicans to cross over and vote in the Democratic primary against Hillary is working in TX.
I've personally spoken to Republicans and pointed out that if they registerd as Democrats they'd get a chance to vote against Hillary once if not twice.
thank you for posting this video. this is the kind of stuff that gives me hope for america's future. gave me chills & made me cry. thank you.
I am so proud of these guys and gals for standing up for their rights!!!
"Fight the Power!"
I lived in Texas when James Byrd Jr. was dragged to death. I was so pissed that W didn't have the balls to attend his funeral.
That's okay. He'll be tried for war crimes eventually.

hear! hear!
When was the last time you saw something like that? Not in the media.
Ron @ 16:
naw, it ain't the black thing
it's the "Not Hillary" thing

Note to the Establishment:
your resignation letters are due in the next 5 munites
your work here is done, your time is over
thank you for your service
Thanks for giving this some attention. It's wonderful! Those students should be very proud of their effort!
to the comment that blacks are voting for Obama because of race
If Clarence Thomas was running for president or let say Flavor Flav, do you really think most blacks would vote for either one of them? I think not. We are capable of independent thinking that is not just based on the "race card."
Like one of the earlier commenters, I'm wondering why the results showed so few total voters. The reports of the march gave 4-digit figures for the participants. Why do the votes only add up to between 500 and 600? Were some denied the right to vote, as has been happening increasingly the past 7 years, or were the crowd estimates too big?
