Shoppers warned bigger bills on way
February 24 2008
When William Lapp, of US-based consultancy Advanced Economic Solutions, took the podium at the annual US Department of Agriculture conference, the sentiment was already bullish for agricultural commodities boosted by demand from the biofuels industry and emerging countries.
He added a twist – that rising agricultural raw material prices would translate this year into sharply higher food inflation.
“I hope you enjoy your meal,” Mr Lapp told delegates during a luncheon. “It is the cheapest one you are going to have at this forum for a while.”

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
And of course news that no one noticed.
Virgin Airlines CEO Richard Branson announced the beginning of "green" air travel with great fanfare over the weekend by flying a big Airbus jet plane on a combination of coconut and palm oil derived fuel. Now the public is supposed to rest assured that the airline industry has been "saved" by "new technology." It's possible that Branson actually believes this bullshit -- since, contrary to conventional belief, you don't have to be especially intelligent to succeed in business. But the public is sure to be disappointed as reality asserts itself and they discover that the stunt doesn't scale world-wide. That is, sure, you can demonstrate that "a" jet plane can fly on bio-fuel. But can you run the entire global airline fleet on coconut and palm oil, or even a fraction of it? Of course not -- unless you cut down the entire Amazon rain forest and replant it with oil tree crops. Not to mention that the CO2 emissions spraying out of bio-fuel jets at 38,000 feet is not materially different from regular jet fuel exhaust. This is just another tragic attempt to persuade ourselves that we don't have to change our behavior.
I dressed up as a witch several Halloweens. I guess that makes me a witch for the rest of my life. Such nonsense!

And Religion
Ralph Nader: Useful Idiot
Maureen Dowd's been my only reason to read the NYTimes lately.
also Edwards/Nader 08!
actor212 @ 6:
actor212, for years now i have enjoyed your posts and your blog...
but i think you are stunningly wrong in your opinions of, and vitriol for, nader.

Hows the state of "Misery" (Missouri) these days?
Censored in Alabama. Wow amazing times.
"Some things it’s best to get out early in politics. John McCain’s association, allegedly romantic, with a lobbyist was one. Farrakhan’s embrace of Barack Obama is another."
Is this the best leadership our country has to offer?
My goodmess, a lobbyist lover and a liberal radical.
Change?
Geez.
As yet the Clinton campaign has not denied putting out that picture of Obama. Do they have any idea how much they are insulting the intelligence of Democrats by doing what they appear to have done? Democrats are not as gullible as republicans were during the swiftboating of Kerry. I think Clinton's campaign has forgotten who they are doing battle with now. It is not yet with the Republican candidate, and at this rate they'll not be around when the that battle begins.
I posted this a day or two ago on another thread, but it was late night, so I don't think anyone saw it.. It appears that Mr. Sinclair agreed to do a polygraph test regarding his so-called time spent with Mr. Obama.

Epic Fail.
I can't help but wonder how much he was paid to do this. I really hope it was a Republican smear job attempt, and not orchestrated from within the Democrat party.
pissed off patricia @ 11:
Yeah, Hillary's losing me at this point. I was originally leaning in her direction too.
As for the picture, it looks like Obama is posing as a member of the Mogadishu High School marching band.
Hillary seems to be "Republican politics that you can xerox."
krisken @ 12:
That insane story by that guy was listed on the front page of "The Globe" this week. Sadly, some people believe what they read in that rag. I would like to see that guy's bank records and see if he has made a large deposit in the last couple of months.
getalife @ 10:
I have a friend who is a die hard Conservative. He believes that there should be no limits on businesses and that free trade would work itself out. Now, if I ran for office, he'd support me, despite our differing views and opinions on many matters, because he feels that I would do a good job and I'd do everything I could to improve the community I live in.
Does that make me Conservative?
How about looking to see if those connections you made affect the decisions those people have made before sticking them with labels, hmm?
This is the biggest problem with politics in America. We're so ready to look at the surface of things and accept that we heard it at many different places and call it truth.
ConcernedCanuck @ 14:
Amen! Just too many spurious things have come from her campaign and I don't remember hearing her campaign deny being the origin of any of them. Is Karl Rove working for her? She accused Obama of using Rove style tactics. She seems better at it than Obama, so I'm wondering if she is learning at the feet of the master.
The Alabama/60 Minutes story is fascinating. The local CBS affiliate evidently pulled the plug on the show -- but just the part concerning Siegelman -- as if no one would notice the gaping hole. Pretty blatant, and sure to backfire. Nothing like a little censorship to pique people's interest.
pissed off patricia @ 17:
With a wig and some makeup, would anyone be able to tell if it was Hillary doing the "point, point, clap, clap" or Rove??
Hey L.A. and Pat, do yall ever sleep?
ConcernedCanuck @ 19:
He'd need contact lenses as well. Vision is critical in PPCC.
Dowager Dowd is as airbrained as they come. I thought Nagourney was screwed up, but MO beats him to the assininity prize.
hey mike, thanks for the link!
pissed off patricia @ 15:
you shoyuld find the large deposits AFTER the Democratic Convention, IF Hillary is the nominee.
It doesn't "make" you anything if you just have some crazy conservative friend who disagrees with you "on many matters" (not specified) but would support you because you'd do everything you could "to improve the community you live in", whatever that means. Gee, that sure tells us a lot about you, Karl.
Dowd has become a joke even among her fellow journalists and Larry Sinclair, christ what can anyone say about this crap? It smells of Roger Stone type political filth and reminds me of the bimbos the right wing would drag out claiming they slept with Bill Clinton. I'm thrilled that he failed the polygraph and now he can crawl back under the rock from which he came.
EliteLemming @ 20:
Are you talking to me? If you are, I am seldom on the computer after 5:00pm here and most mornings I make my debut about 6:00am. Then I'm on and off during the day.
MillionthMonkey @ 25:
That was the point I was trying to make. Not sure why I'm suddenly named Karl either.
"Shame on you Barack". No, Shame on you Hillary.
pissed off patricia @ 27:
Yes, and soon sfter posting I reminded myself I work 3rd shift. Thanks for the answer though, love your stuff.

I do not credit one word of what that scoundrel Larry Sinclair has said. Hypothetically, however, if it were true wouldn't that just mean Senator Obama would have to become the Republican nominee for President?
"Arms Control Wonk: Norwegian Foreign Ministry hosting a conference on achieving a nuclear weapons-free world."
Good luck with that, as long as America is around!
"Sunday’s 60 Minutes segment on the malicious prosecution of former Alabama Governor, Don Siegelman, was blacked out in much of Alabama."
Sorry to nitpick, but I see it far too often on this site: Siegelman is not the only former governor in Alabama's history. So the sentence should read, much more simply:
Sunday’s 60 Minutes segment on the malicious prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was blacked out in much of Alabama.
