Taxi To The Dark Side Wins Best Documentary

icon Download | play icon Download | play (h/t Heather)

Maybe the reason that right wingers hate Hollywood so much can be explained by the Academy Awards Best Documentary Feature category at last night's Academy Awards. No amount of Jack Bauer-ticking clock scenarios or heartwarming whitewashed happy endings can negate the truths brought forward by documentary filmmakers like Alex Gibney or his fellow nominees Charles Ferguson, Michael Moore, Richard Robbins and Andrea Nix Fine, who are all--separately and collectively--leaps and bounds in front of the pathetic news media in informing the general public of what's happening in our world. Bringing forward those facts--and we all know that facts have a liberal bias--that may be painful to watch, but necessary to know must be an anathema to those who confuse jingoism for really caring about this country.

So congratulations to Alex Gibney (and a big round of applause to fellow blogger and Taxi to the Dark Side Executive Producer Sidney Blumenthal) for making sure we know what is really happening in our names that cuts through media spin.

Did they do this to piss off O'Reily?

Here's Nader's response:

MR. RUSSERT: ...You, Ralph Nader are responsible for what has happened the last seven years.
MR. NADER: Not, not George Bush? Not the Democrats in Congress? Not the voters who voted for George Bush? But there were Democrats in Florida, 250,000 of them. You know, I wish we'd have Al Gore on this program someday Tim and ask him, "Why did you not become president in 2000?" And I think what he's going to tell you is he thought he did win Florida, but it was taken from him before, during and after the election from Tallahassee. Katherine Bush--you know the secretary of the state...

MR. RUSSERT: Katherine Harris.

MR. NADER: Harris, rather, and Jeb Bush, all the way to that terribly politicized Supreme Court decision. But the, the political bigotry that's involved here is that we shouldn't enter the electoral arena? We, all of us who, who, who think that the country needs an infusion of freedom, democracy, choice, dissent should just sit on the sidelines and watch the two parties own all the voters and turn the government over to big business? What's really important here is, if you want to look at it analytically, is there--Mr. Gore would, would tell you if he won Tennessee, anything else being equal, he would've been president. It's his home state. If he won Arkansas, everything else being equal, he would've been president. The mayor of Miami sabotaged the Democrats because of a grudge, didn't bring thousands of votes out. Quarter of a million Democrats voted for Bush in Florida. There is all kinds of thievery in Florida.

So why do they blame the Greens? Why do they blame the people all over the country who are trying to have a progressive platform, not just the environment. What was their crime? Why, why, why isn't there tolerance for candidates' rights the way there is a building tolerance over the last 50 years for voter rights? Because without voter rights, candidate rights don't mean much. And without candidate rights--more voices and choices--voter rights don't mean much. I--I'm amazed at the liberal intelligencia here. They are analytic and they deal with all kinds of variables, but when it comes to 2000 election, it's just one variable.

And I might add that Solon Simmons and other scholars--he teaches at George Mason--have shown that by pushing Gore to take more progressive stands, he got more votes than the votes he allegedly--were withdrawn from for the Green party. Twenty-five percent of my vote, according to a Democratic pollster, exit poll, would've gone to Bush. Thirty-nine percent would've gone to Gore and the rest would've stayed home. Every major--every third party in Florida got more votes than the 537 vote gap. So let's get over it and try to have a diverse multiple choice, multiple party democracy the way they have in Western Europe and Canada. This bit of, of spoiler is really very astonishing. These are the two parties who've spoiled our electoral system, money, they can't even count the votes, they steal--the Republicans steal the votes, and the Democrats knock third party candidates off the ballot. That's their specialty these days.

To me that was easily the best moment of that superficial show. And unlike Micheal Moore a few years ago(whose speech was just as truthful) the man wasn't jeered off stage.

No wondering Hollywood has fell out of favor with America. How come we never see any movies about the good things going on in the WOT?

You forgot to mention the awesome acceptance speech for this. Very classy...very spot on!

It's because if the Academy wants to nominate a Documentary about two fucking morons they'll wait for one about Bush and Cheney.

It's funny I was just over at wizbangblog, where they have written a piece about how much Hollywood hates the troops, for this very documentary. It was really sickening. It kind of reminds me of how repressive regimes always protest when light is shown on their inhumane tactics.

It seems more and more like the Republican party has become a party of crazy sadist who want to emulate these regimes as much as possible.

Thanks, Nicole. I still need to see Taxi to the Dark Side, but I'm looking forward to it. The other nominated docs I've seen are fantastic.

Uncle Joe, I still need to see King of Kong, which I've heard is great. However, the truth is that the documentary category is almost always good, even when brilliant films such as Hoop Dreams have been excluded. There are just a large number of great docs every year, and most every one is a labor of love, because it's generally not lucrative. The problem used to be that the nominating committee was old and cranky, and they wouldn't even screen some films or else would stop viewing them after about 20 minutes. That's still a problem in at least one category (not sure if it's still the case for docs anymore). Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days as well as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly both should have been nominated for Best Foreign Language Picture. Anyway, I feel your pain, but do check out the nominated films as well.

The last O'Reilly item on 2/22/08, last email: "....Bill, calling Michael Moore a pinhead is an insult to pinheads. One of my uncles was almost murdered by Fidel Castro. How Moore can think Fidel is a hero is crazy. - Rich Inza, Miramar, FL" to which O'Reilly replied: "INDEED, and we'll be watching more closely at the Oscars if he wins [mumbled]....Monday"

So I expect something tonight.

I'm sure it was an excellent documentary that practically nobody has seen. Great job!

I know there are a lot of nominees in the documentary category, but James Longley deserves to be mentioned. His previous nominations "Gaza Strip" and "Iraq in Fragments" are excellent. This years nomination was for "Sari's Mother" which was created out of material that didn't make it into "Iraq in Fragments".

Kudos to Alex Gibney for his acceptance speech.

Taxi to the Dark Side is a great documentary. If you haven't seen it yet, GO! It's a must see for all who care about what's being done in our names. As for the right-wing blogs that say the documentary is against our troops. They haven't seen it because it's totally pro-troop. It's the low-level troops that are getting prosecuted, for doing what Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld ordered them to do. They set the policy, they said take the gloves off and created the conditions allowed the abuse to happen. These low-level troops were just following orders, but yet they are only ones being held accountable.

Is this the film that Discovery bought the rights to and now won't play it because it'll show how questionable the actions are over there?

There are a lot of great political documentaries available for free on Google Video. I hope the readers and leaders at Crooks and Liars are more than familiar with them. I'm also glad the taxi documentary won an oscar. More Americans need to see these documentaries.

Yes

But it will be airing on HBO shortly. It's still playing in my local art theater.

The Oscars must be the only remaining way to highlight the shame this administration has wrought to its own country; "Taxi To The Dark Side", in no small measure, performs this valuable service and lets the entire world know that not all Americans are barbarian scum. I thank the Neo-cons who enabled and unleashed this nightmare disgrace America has earned in their name. At the very least no one spin this disgrace in a positive light. MacCain and Hillary should be questioned if they have seen this movie and are they proud of voting for torture?

America, please move away from the "dark side". A country I once respected, I don't even recognize anymore, nor will I go there. (I don't feel safe from your secret police.)

I watched those documenaties. You can watch ones just like it every night on CBC, 'The Passionate Eye', 'The 5th Estate' and others here do a show like these every week.

Not to detract from what these Documenaries say, but we around the world do not succumb to as much overt propoganda.

But even we have our censorship assholes. Like the report about the LIVE ORGAN HARVESTING in CHINA. Yes. Live. Order Your Organs, and they will drive a prisoner with your new organ to be harvested at the airport in a freezer van and moved onto a waiting plane.

The subject is left to die or is cremated, alive or dead.

Sorry I just hope someone notices that special kind of hell. The leaders of both China anad the US deserve contempt.
