Democratic Debate Open Thread
MSNBC will run the debate live from Cleveland State University from 9-10:30 p.m. Eastern. NBC's Brian Williams and Tim Russert will moderate. It will be streamed live on msnbc.com.
The New York Times "asked five experts to pose the questions that they feel have not been answered over the course of more than a year of campaigning."
And David Sirota provides an Ohio Debate Primer on Trade...

HILLARY FIRST!!!
The live stream is not working on msnbc.
i hate timmeh and williams. This is gonna suck.
Jesus Christ, Tim Russert looks like a zombie.
Love the first question. Hillary...you've been Caught On Tape!
round one for the bullshit artists , ding ding!
Geez going right to the meat with the first question
Hahahaha.......how much ya bet they don't ask the REAL questions that everyone wants answers to?
Hillary Makes a Comeback Among WOMEN: Sybil!
OMG! Is she going to pull a Bill O'Rielly and be all sweetness and light while explaining that all the crap she said made perfect sense?
msnbc vid player sux bigtime.
Wow, Hillary is pulling back...
Fuck that word...affordable! If it is more than $20 a month I can't afford it and yet she says EVERYONE will be covered. How is that possible?
Won't play for me.........buffers every few seconds
neamhni @ 12:
she is gonna smack him in the back of the head at least 3 times
OK, who put the photo out? Drudge?
Janet @ 13:
Hear Hear!! i don't even want to *know* what her rich-ass idea of "affordable" is!
How to keep the elections rigged:
Transition ownership of the debates to cable networks.
F*****g thing doesn't work in any browser.
Roger from Ohio @ 15:
The look she is giving him is wild. She gave him an evil, loathing stare. Poor thing
Roger from Ohio @ 15:
That made me laugh so hard i've got to wipe the soda off my keyboard! :)
neamhni @ 17:
The mandate will take it right out of your paycheck in a forced payroll deduction, that's one way.
dc @ 16:
I have no idea "blink, blink" where that came from "blink, blink" and if it was someone from my campaign "blink, blink" then I knew nothing about it "blink, blink"
Janet @ 13:
the same way that everyone is able to afford to go to school from K to 12
Slam! We haven't whined about it. lol
Lollimom @ 18:
I have the same problem.........nothing but drag
The gloves are off! Woooo!
Fanon @ 21:
What if i don't have a job? Or i run my own business?
Oh man! She is GLARING at him. I wonder if she's going to go off and start with the shrill talk. She's obviously trying to control her voice. Wait for it. Waaaaaait for it.....
Plus, I do wish that both of them would stop saying "health care". They're not talking about health care. They're talking about health INSURANCE.
Does Hillary not understand that mandating that kids have health care and mandating that adults have health care is different?
Fanon @ 21:
They take anything else out of my paycheck I will owe money each week.
ConcernedCanuck @ 22:
Muahahahahahah!!
Folks, you all are our eyes and ears on this one. I don't have cable; can't get the stream to work, either.
Please give us what they're saying as far as their positions go because, frankly, the back-and-forth bickering (among us, I mean) doesn't help too much. Knowing what the candidates say, though, helps a lot.
Thanks.
most unlikely thing to happen, but i'd really like to see it:
at some point, it clicks in Senator Clinton's mind, screw these advisors, screw Bill. She concedes not after the primaries not tomorrow, but during this debate.
Senator Obama immediately turns to her & says: "Hillary, I need a real nuts & bolts solutions oriented person to help me implement the big policy changes our country needs. So I ask, would you be my running-mate?"
She agrees.
>hugs<
"Let's go fix our nation"
"I'm with you."
They spend the remaining scheduled msnbc time to thoroughly smack McCain around.
Party united, unstoppable ticket, the beginning of a 16 year era of Democratic presidents.
i should probably stop writing these scripts that'll never happen
neamhni @ 27:
Good question
Russert and Williams might as well just get down on their knees (mouths wide open) in front of Obama…this is the most ridiculous “debate” I’ve seen so far.
This is an unfortunate analogy from a Clinton supporter...... =(
Clinton sure is good at making excuses for things that she has control over but not yet done. Why not release the records? "Oh we want to, but we will." And Timmeh's an idiot.
he answered the question tim.
quit trying to stick it to him!
hey errol save that for your personal blog...
plastic @ 358:
Never say never. :)
What the hell is a drummie?
Man - Timmeh is going after Obama with double hearsay. REALLY powerful stuff.
here's a question: what about the iraq oil going to multinationals!
dc @ 357:
I love you too, you sweet understanding human being.
Yes! Will you join your fellow Democrats and kneel down to kiss the Zionist ring? The "special relationship" is one of supporting genocide against Palestinians and stealing their land. That's pretty "special".
Is Timmeh going to whip out a turbin and ask him to model it? What kind of crap link is that!
Ack!
Was that a pat on the back to Lieberman!?
Fanon @ 365:
I guess sum folk call it a drummette, it leg lookin' piece of a chicken wing.
Go Timmeh-its a Farakan Fest.
He's so notably tenacious with the follow questions when Dems are in the hot seat. Why is that?
Hey Timmeh! The majority of American Jews oppose the Iraq war and Zionist oppression. They don't support AIPAC and Likud.
Fanon @ 365:
I'll take a wild guess and say it's something found on the Hooter's menu.
carefulwiththatAXEeugene @ 367:
SHHHHHHHH
CalGeorge @ 371:
If you're Lieberman, everything can either be seen as a pat on the back to Lieberman or an affront to Lieberman. That's not a Zionist thing per se, is just his royal douchery.
We need to move beyond zionism.
Man what a pander fest.
Clinton just jumped in and defended herself on an attack on Obama.
She sucks.
plastic @ 376:
You're gonna' spoil the surprise.
Strawberrybitch @ 375:
HOOTER'S? PLEASH I don't don't go for that conglomo chicken!
LoL....Hillary saw a opening and it got throw back in her face!
"I object and renounce!"
If Hillary is so "open" why hasn't she released her tax records? She will only do it IF she is nominated? Wouldn't that be a little late for anyone to make a judgement?
Timmeh is an ass, always. I bet there is not one politician of any flavor that hasn't known or does know someone that isn't pure or shady. Hillary received donations from someone that is now in prison. Big deal.
Reject or denounce? lol
Damn. She almost got him on hair-splitting semantics. But the crafty fellow weaseled his way out of it. Damn him! Damn him!
They debate this?

to keep a copy.
Wow... that was awesome.
Gee, He's good. What a slam dunk on her petty "look at me" slant on the reject/denounce comment. How childish. We all knew what he meant.
xoites defends Constitution @ 380:
Husbans says she couldn't bare to be quiet any longer.
I think I just saw a look on Hillary's face. It said, "Holy Shit. I'm debating the next President of the United States."
What a non-issue, "reject" vs. "denounce", Hillary tried to ride Obama's coattails on his Farrakhan response and he ended up showing how petty the quibbling over that particular word choice was.
The reject and denouce thing? Good lord she's self-distructing.
man, omaba is so good at tearing apart hilary's bullshit points. god damn her stupid semantic arguments.
if I could just jump in here for a moment... I PERSONALLY gave 34 anti semites nipple twisters and frowned in the general direction of a group of skin heads that i saw once
Five minutes and I had to shut it off. My blood pressure is under control without any medication, but this would have had me ready to pop. Is this all the Democrats have to offer?
So, explain to me again why all Americans can't have the same health care that the members of Congress have? Until both sides agree to kick the insurance companies to the curb or toss them under the bus I don't want to hear any more about their "solutions".
man i am so tired of this healthcare debate
reciprocity @ 11:
worst ever. this is what a concentrated media presence gets you. Don't forget it!
#$^#&%*!!!
neamhni @ 27:
That's the rub. That's the part she won't, or can't answer. There is some talk about fines when and if you do arrive seeking health care. A penalty. Which just means people will wait until they are in dire straits to seek care and drive up costs and on and on.
don't spoil the end for me. I'll have to watch it when I get home from work at 1am. Then again at 3am. Then probably sometime over the weekend. In between segments of "Lockup".
After this debate no President is EVER going to give her an Ambassadorship.
Babushka Blue @ 28:
She looks really pissed.
Barack! It's not Massatoosits.
Jeeez.
msnbc vid player working fine on my mac!!
porkchop @ 39:
The MSNBC player never works
euthyfro @ 34:
Wow. I thought you were going to say they start necking and I was getting a little grossed out there! Phew!
just let her go barack...lets move on
mo_dem @ 306:
once again, I must say three cheers for Khasteh. thank you for sharing a solid link!
Reject and denounce is the best in any debate I've seen. He just got another 20% of the Ohio vote.
Hillary just made herself look like a teen aged girl.
pinkobait @ 373:
Forgive my naivete, but how does this line of questioning from Russert affect Ohio? Or Tejas, for that matter?
bear to be quiet....grrrrrrrrrr
I swear to Almighty Jehovah / Yaweh / God / Allah / Ganesha / et al but I hope I live to see the day when a mainstream politician stands up and denounces and rejects Israel's policy of confiscating other people's land and subjecting them to brutal occupation and abject misery.
I wouldn't be surprised if she wins this round of primaries..........she does have a large base.
Sheesh this thread is a lunatic bin. Where these people come from?
Anybody else think "ladders" is elitist?
Mr Pelicano @ 385:
She's definitely reachingggggggg......Her frustration is palpable.
Mr Pelicano @ 369:
hate to bring up ron paul but he s right on this one....Israel has like a few hundred nukes and the US keeps arming everyone else in that area so let them work it out
v 1: speak out against; "He denounced the Nazis"
v 1: refuse to accept or acknowledge; "I reject the idea of
starting a war"; "The journal rejected the student's
paper"
IF Obama wins I will support him .....he will be a good president
If Clinton wins I will support her .... she will be a great president
My question to all of you Clinton haters
If Clinton is the nomination will u be voting for McCain?
How in the hell is the Clinton campaign gonna spin themselves out of this one?
Reject or denounce? What bull crap!
How about a question about holding the criminal Bush cartel accountable?
brithumeistheantichrist @ 391:
...and that next president is fast as a motherfucker.
L.A. Confidential @ 403:
Wat u takin bout Willis?
L.A. Confidential @ 403:
you got me?
elvisgoat @ 407:
Sure wish we could cut the "I support Israel" crap. I mean...I'm not against them, mind you, but I'm not exactly drawn to them and their policies toward the Palestinians, etc.
Could we just focus on the old USA for a bit longer?? How about we focus on America, eh?
Roger from Ohio @ 408:
Oh lord, cut the crap. Have a drummie....
mudshark @ 402:
If you translate that to arabic and then back to english using babelfish, the last two words are
fat ass
cc @ 392:
OK, for the slow-at-home-computer people who have dial-up, explain, please.
1st
The only way I would ever vote for John McCain is if he was being nominated for involuntary civil commitment. In such circumstances I would have no problem.
L.A. Confidential @ 403:
We come from all sorts of places, my friend (to quote St. John) - we fix your fast food. We cut you off in traffic. We decide how big your raise will be. We pick whether or not you get audited. We care for your children. We sell your sex toys. We train your dogs. We write your laws. We don't take shit from the likes of you.
Erroll@351
I actually agree with most of what you say. The elite Washington consensus however is not all as extreme as are the Bush regime. Like most segments of our society, it has diverse elements, some are more moderate, some more radical. I believe that Obama, at worst, represents a more moderate and pragmatic wing that believes in diplomacy before engaging in war and adventurism. For McCain, the Republicans and elements of the Democratic party (in particular the DLC) belligerent nationalism and aggression is the first course of action. Obama is not my ideal, but he's better than any of the viable alternatives. We'll just have to live with that or acquiesce to allowing the most radically belligerent nationalist wing of elite Washington consensus retain power. The consequences of that, I think, are unimaginable and unacceptable.
kanan @ 158:
So you hate women.. I am disgusted by you... what have women done to you? Cant you see it has taken so long for us to find a woman who might actually have a chance? Dont we owe women?
Has the word Corporation been uttered even once?
What about FISA and the telecomm immunity?
Who gives a fuck about Louis Farakan?
craven morehead @ 395:
Go you!
Oh no The "L" word!!
Obama's vigorously defending himself against the dreaded Liberal tag.Everybody run away!!!
Me? I'm a proud God Damned Liberal.
on this debate,I think the moderators are doing a good job.
They Should be asking hard questions.
Roger from Ohio @ 408:
no, but i will tell you if clinton wins on super delegates i will not vote for clinton (or mccain) and i will change my party registration from D to I
Roger from Ohio @ 408:
Yes, i will if she is. I am just hoping (ok, that gave away my liberal bias) that she is not.
Putin! Now there's a guy who knows how to get shit done. I'd vote for him over both these two. He'd have the Republicans rounded up and on their way to Siberia before Matt Drudge could figure out why Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly were shackled to him.
dan @ 419:
post of the night!
RobertD @ 33:
i'll try to help you out- i'm watching it on tv.
So far, it's the healthcare debate.
It's nothing new... however, Clinton is arguing that Obama has a mandate in his policy, so there's no difference (his is for children, her's is for everyone).
Man, this MSNBC stream is total crap.
Blah, blah, blah
Who has the biggest bandaid?
Eyes across the U.S. glazing over as they ONCE AGAIN repeat the SAME OLD talking points on health care.
neamhni @ 48:
Thanks! : )
There she goes again with "premiums". Substitute "premium" for "tax" and you're on your way to single-payer and the insurance companies can cry in their beer.
whooka @ 49:
I even clicked on their "live blogging" link, and there is...wait for it......NO LIVE BLOGGING!! AH!
Hail to the Chimp @ 45:
so if you have to make a budget choice between data streaming and 98 channels of utter garbage - don't count on getting either.
Go Insurance!!!
Bye, Bye paycheck.
She just said "nearly covers everyone" and yet she said 2 minutes ago that "everyone" would be covered. Which is it?
we should just let the market sort the healthcare issue out....
just kidding
Don't want to pick on HRC. Same goes with Mr. Obama.
Fanon @ 40:
Right. i own my own business. And i'll be damned if i am legally *forced* to pay FINES for something I CAN'T AFFORD. That doesn't make any sense- "I'm going to make you pay for the fact that you can't pay for something." It's really expensive being poor.
Who's got the rules for the drinking game?
Mr Pelicano @ 53:
Oh ya, that would be universal, eh? Car insurance PREMIUM...Health Insurance PREMIUM........hmmmmmmmm...see no diff.
I don't understand why so many of my fellow democrats are blind to the one most relevant fact about Hilary Clinton... her negative ratings are astronomical. She is more widely loathed than anyone we could have run not named Michael Moore... any ticket with her on it will LOSE.
If you like her, keep her in the senate where she has real power and a loyal electorate. Keep her away from national races. She will doom the democrats.
The market has sorted it out. Millions uncovered and crowding into emergency rooms. Gotta love that market.
Someone tell her the Democratic nominee has been chosen and it is not her.
Barack just laid the smack down.
The MSNBC video feed is lousy. Almost constant buffering and dropouts.
EliteLemming @ 61:
if you have the word plan in your game your are dead already
Someone must have told her to stop being nice.
EliteLemming @ 61:
Rules schmulz after just 15 minutes of this, I'm ready to drink period.
OK, she just said, point of employment, point of contact with ANY government agency means you would "automatically" be enrolled. So, you will pay it in your taxes, your payroll tax, out of your welfare check, etc. How does this cover homeless people?
And she CHEATS as they said this was to be the last answer and she won't STFU!!!
plastic @ 67:
Or, "let me just respond to that."
Fanon @ 416:
DING, DING, DING! Line of the night! LOL!
Ooh, HRC is flubbing the catch on the Russian successor question. Can Obama do better?
Medved?
cf @ 417:
don't respond to my comments unless you have something semi intelligent to post.
Roger from Ohio @ 408:
I'm not a Clinton hater, I just have Clinton fatigue - there's been a Bush or a Clinton on every presidential ballot I've punched. I would vote for her in the GE if she were the Dem nominee, of course - McCain would be much worse.
It would be good if she could pronounce the name of the next Russian president properly, because I'm tired of having a president that can't speak properly.
TheEnticer @ 423:
ur punny
Quiet Burp @ 410:
No! Farakan is much more powerful!
