Republican DA Resigns After Porn, Racist Humor Found On Computer
By Logan Murphy Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 8:20pm
Via Newsweek:
In his 30-plus-year legal career in Harris County, Texas, Chuck Rosenthal has been no stranger to controversy. As a prosecutor he lit firecrackers in the stairwell of the district attorney's offices soon after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings. (It was a prank, he said.) After he was elected DA in 2000 he called the death penalty a "biblical proposition" and lobbied unsuccessfully to maintain Texas's sodomy law...
Rosenthal is back in the headlines again. Last December, as part of a federal civil rights lawsuit into how justice is meted out in the county, he turned over the (partial) contents of his government e-mail account. And what a batch of e-mails it was. Black ministers called for the Republican to resign because of racist material, including a cartoon depicting an African-American suffering from a "fatal overdose" of watermelon and fried chicken. There were adult video clips and love notes from Rosenthal to his secretary, his mistress during a previous marriage.
Now it appears that Rosenthal's on-the-job antics have done him in. In the wake of the e-mail revelations, local GOP leaders forced him to abort his re-election bid. Then, on Feb. 15, after Lloyd Kelley, the attorney in the civil rights case, brought a lawsuit accusing him of drinking on the job and "incompetence, or official misconduct," Rosenthal resigned. Read on...
The article also states that Rosenthal isn't out of the woods yet. Following in the footsteps of the Bush administration and the GOP, it appears he deleted e-mails he was supposed to have saved and could be in some hot water.

Didja' ever notice that on C&L Comments, Hillary never shouts "FIRST."
Hillary !
OK, I wouldn't trust someone who DOESN'T have porn and tasteless jokes on their computer.
"and lobbied unsuccessfully to maintain Texas’s sodomy law…"
He's gay.
Tasteless jokes are the best!
Porn is even better.
What gives?
But hey, at least he isn't one of those morally void atheists...
Obviously, he did not recieve the GOP talking points memo that claerly stated; becuase the Democrats are running a colored canidate, GOP members are not to use the "N" word until after the 2008 election.
Nice.
i think atheists should accuse people who speak ill of atheism as being a closet atheist. it worked for the gays....
Yeehaaaaaw!
The Rosenthal's of Texas are proud today.
Mozeltov!

That's one scary lookin dude. I mean, add a brownshirt,an Iron Cross and an armband and He's all dressed up for some serious meyhem.
Legal beagles never break the law. Right?
They're too smart for that.
The eyes of Texas are upon you
All the live-long day, mofo.
there is something innately wrong with repuglicans.
they are incompetent and just plain IGNORANT AND STUPID.
why they are in politics is beyond reason, they don't even make
good crooks.
What a prize horse's ass this guy is.
They should fire him out of a cannon into a vat of shit.
The pathology of Republicanism.
pinkobait @ 15:
Why ruin a perfectly good vat of shit?
he looks like william macy's father-in-law in "fargo".

a cartoon depicting an African-American suffering from a “fatal overdose” of watermelon and fried chicken.
Might want to look at how many African-Americans were falsely prosecuted by this dude.
Just another shining example of the high moral standards and family values that the republican party stands for. What a POS!
Hey, give the guy a break. At least it wasn't child porn.
Ron @ 28:
That was the stuff he 'erased'.
Wonder if this Republican still supports spying on Americans' private email and phone calls?
I am not a big fan of this.
As an IT professional, I know how EASY it is to send emails to a person and mark them as read, or even (slightly harder - slightly) to place certain files on a person's computer.
This is a future blackmail scenario - if you don't follow our policy, Mr. politician, certain child porn files will find a way into your computer (wink wink nudge nudge).
Most of these government guys have no clues about personal computers, and anyway, there could be a "technician" who puts a very small USB drive into the computer (these things are small and hold gigabytes by now) which would automatically load stuff into a computer.
Heck, we have infrared now - stuff can be downloaded into your computer from very far away with a powerful beam.
Yes, slowly but surely we are getting into the Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex and Section 9 territory....
David Hawes @ 29:
racist pron?
Ron @ 28:
Yet.....
tr @ 19:
Yes he does.Macy's character was also a horse's ass in the film which is incidently one of my favorites. It was great seeing the brothers Coen clean up at the Awards.
Cas @ 4:
A Republican with a 'tache' goes without saying.
I'm white and the would be my favorite way to die. Overdosing on fried chicken and watermelon. It's not a black thing it's a southern thing.
The only surprise is that he resigned. What kind of Republican does that?
pinkobait @ 34:
Agreed!
americangoy @ 31:
That is a lovely tale, but explain how this might be done in a DA's office. Surely there is no security or police or anything.
Barrett D @ 9:
"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Stephen F. Roberts
(Still not sure what the above comment has to do with porn and racism but always enjoy a chance to repeat this brilliant quote).
I wasn't aware that any Republican gets in trouble for deleting emails. I think it was SOP.
Ron @ 28:
maybe the reason he deleted some emails in breach of the law.
Bit like the missing WH and RNC emails, they knew it was highly illegal and visible to wipe them,
so what morally reprehensible crimes were they covering up.
I think they would rather get fined and maybe six months for data crimes, rather than 20 years for nasty stuff.
abarts @ 41:
If it's on a Gov't computer, therefore it is 'public record'. Get it?
will the christian right ever wake up and realize that these guys have been using them?
will the observant jewish right do the same?
the republican party is not about morals, its about effing over the little guy
Barrett D @ 9:
You have the ignorant hick bible basher sky fairy people, stupid and vicious but understandable moronic humans.
Then you have the Bohemian Grove satanic types who pretend to be christian in public,
the ones who commit crimes which would make most peoples blood curdle.
dadams @ 14:
They are in politics to make MONEY. They will do anything & say anything to get in power. And than they exploit that power for the personal gain of themself and their rich friends. I wish mainstream America would wake up to these crooks. btw - why do so many of them come from texas or arizona or the south?
dadams @ 14:
their not all ignorant and stupid,to say that would be prejudiced.
It's just the ones that follow the party line blindly.regardless of what amount of truth hit's them upside the head.
Harris county is full of scumbags like this. Good to see this rethug resign in disgrace.
David Hawes @ 43:
oh, I get it.
I haven't noticed anyone being held accountable, though.
What a nut job. What a maroon. But why should he resign? Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens hasn't, nor been pressured to, nor censured, nor ripped to shameful little bloody pieces on TV by the MSM. Who is Ted Stevens, anyway, the antichrist? How does he DO IT?
Republicanism is nothing but criminal pathology masked as political ideology. It's small wonder that sociopaths and thugs are attracted to draping themselves in the flag and religion to hide their inner pathological urges from society.
evenplayingfield @ 46:
Now,now. In the 20 years I spent in the Waterbury,CT area,EVERY mayor but one was arrested for corruption. Now,pick the party the one who wasn't arrested was in. Now,that's as yankeeland as anyplace.

I am sure the DOJ and the various TLAs are stuffed to the gills with Regent grads and similar sky fairy jerks.
They coundnt even find the domestic terrorists who did the Oct 01 Anthrax attacks.
How many federal stormtroops do our taxes pay for in America, we sure dont seem to be getting our monies worth from them.
In any private company they would be fired for incompetence and being slackers.
> including a cartoon depicting an African-American suffering from a “fatal overdose” of watermelon and fried chicken.
I don't think that's possible since I've sure tried. (It's a fat thing; you wouldn't understand).

Now, every time I see R. [Republican] after some pols name I wonder if they have an immoral or criminal or self-serving agenda. They all seem to have corrupted a once proud Party. We need to flush them out and start over.

It might if you were a pedophile. Of course you might have been fired if you set off a fire cracker in your office on 9/11.

Hey, I am from Houston, and this has been a big story for a couple of months. The guy that sent him the racist stuff and the porn is the husband of his top da, that is running to replace him. The law suit that started it all comes from if I remember a 2004 arrest of a couple of brothers that videotaped a drug raid next door to there house, when the police say them taping the harassesd and arressted them. It started with the love letters to his secretary, and it just snowballed from there. I am glad he's out, but I expect another rethuglican will replace him, in a couple of years, it'll be the same story over and over agian.
AshWilliams @ 68:
yeah. That's what 'They' said about Martin Luthur
Proud2bHumble @ 66:
Actually not , i just think it fits the post. :)
The picture of this SOB would look at home on a NAZI ID card, God I hate these people. Bring on the revolution please.
No racist pictures on my machine. ...but I do have some pics involving an African-American little person, busty blonde twins, a spatula, and nothing but love.
What a magnificant opportunity to make some sweeeeet tastin' lemonade out of those sour old lemons!
This is just one more example of just how powerfull the dark one is. This is a golden time to fess up brother, admit your sinful ways, and get your butt back to the Savior! Confess and you will be forgiven. Hell, we'd vote you back in! We need more God fearing men who have seen the evil of their ways.
(at least this is how I figure it'll play out)
xoites defends Constitution @ 64:

Yeah (I like that word. "Racial".)
You're right. It was just convenient for me to say he was racist.
This reminds me of The Mitchell and Webb Look Show's "Good Samaritan" sketch. Hilarious.
THis ha sbeen a UGE story down her ein Houston for along time... the prblem isn't that he had e-mail on his computer (the FBI is investigating him because he deleted the subpoenaed files, and lied at one or another depositions stating his belief of "total deletion" or "existing backup server"), but that he FORWARDED the emails. To a list of people that ahd to be picked, not a random send-out that a Trojan might cause.

He's also been involved in the dismissed rand jury looking into an arson case against a local Republican Judge, the front-runner for the Republicans for Harris Da is someone from his office (who may have been involved in his questionable activity), and more ...
I'd say it's unusual, but this where Tom DeLay's from.
An odder local story is the account of the HPD held a stand-off with a naked black man that ended in the man being killed by Police gunfire because "He represented a threat to himself."
God never knew him.

When people start treating Republicanism like alcoholism or drug addiction or or whatever other disease/addiction you wish to compare it to this country will be out of the denial stage and working towards the acceptance stage.

Next time, pay closer attention to the article. It says very clearly that this was on his governmental e-mail account, the account which he uses for his work as a District Attorney. It's one thing to have porn and racist jokes on your home computer, quite another to have them on your office computer -- with racist jokes, doubly so when objectivity towards other people is supposed to be part of your job requirement. His behavior is not just inappropriate, it's pathologically stupid -- most people by now know very well (and if they don't, they should) that most employers do not consider professional e-mail accounts private, and employers have a point. Although the article doesn't make it clear whether the e-mail messages containing racist jokes and adult video clips were messages which Rosenthal sent or merely ones which he received -- but if they included ones which he sent, most private companies would consider this an abuse of company privileges since messages sent from a company account could potentially reflect on the company's reputation because there's no way to control where those messages go once they're sent -- and most private companies would be considered within their rights to terminate an employee who persisted in doing such things. If Rosenthal wants to send or receive racist jokes and adult video clips, let him do it from his home computer -- it's not as if a District Attorney can't afford one!
Ahhh. Texas politics. Nothing like it in the whole wide world. Gosh, I do miss Ms. Molly Ivins.
"...in response to the new lawsuit, he blamed a combination of prescription drugs for causing 'some impairment' of his judgment."
So he's been forwarding racist emails and looking at porn on his office computer, deleting files that were presumably worse, committing perjury, supposedly drinking on the job, and on top of all that he's eating pills that "cause impairment".
He's going to go down hard, but that's probably little comfort to all the young black men he's thrown the book at for first-time drug offenses. They're not likely to get out any sooner just because it turns out some old white Texan prosecutor is a hypocrite and a racist.
"footsteps of the Bush administration and the GOP"
That should be "RNC," because it isn't the party -- it's the party organization.
The RNC is going to have to be pried open like a clam with RICCO prosecutions.
Caging lists? We need to CAGE Karl and his pals.
Snark, you can visit the noble Chuck Rosenthal's site:
http://app.dao.hctx.net/
...where he also INVITES you to send him your comments.
I apologize for being sober, you fellows are swimming in delicious sentiment and the most adorable humor....is this a guy's version of a pajama party?
tr @ 19:
Yea, and look how he ended up..
What a tool.
Not that any of these things are shocking anymore.
Was he trying to keep the sodomy laws so it would give him an incentive to not get backdoor action from his secretary?
It's looks like the Republican party is the party of perverts. Geesh, do any of them have a "normal" sex life??????? And they impeached Clinton for a bj, what a laugh! Look who's calling the kettle black!
Maybe he and Mark Foley and Larry Craig should get together for a little Republican "manage a hypocrites"*.
*(french language)
I love these stories and look forward to seeing more Bushies out of office wherever they may reside. Weird!
Yeah man, beavers and lynching jokes will get you every time.
FYI: Chuck Rosenthal and I aren't related. We have no Republican'ts in *MY* family.
Americangoy@30
Would you say that the technology exists to activate different portions of the firmware that is embedded into all chips by the manufacturer, through a signal as limited in strength as say a GPS type source... by satellite... ?
YES!
Firmware that could place just about anything onto your computer, by satellite command, through code that was placed there by the "Proprieter"!
Language code that could be written to allow for various results at the user end.
It's goning to be a free for all in cyber space soon.
A Republican discovered to be a scumbag? I am shocked...SHOCKED!, I tell you!!!
And I thought my web cam was turned off!
poetic justice, karma in action....I feel much better now knowing bush and cheney won't escape their just rewards for all their crimes against humanity.
Just another depraved republican soul. What more have we come to expect?
Unless you take your disk drive and drop it into the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean (depth: approx 35,000 feet), there is no such thing as a 'deleted email'
But the question everyone wants to know is how good a toe tapper is he?
This is the party that claims morality as their exclusive territory.
Right.
Say it ain't so! Another flaming hypocritical Republican scumbag? I'll give him kudos for not blaming the "librul media" for his woes. It was the "prescription drugs" (aka hillbilly heroin I'm sure). Of course he say he's sorry (translation: sorry he got caught, sorry that someone exposed him). Just once I'd like to see one of these dirtbags just own up to what they did and take their lumps. Yeah, and throwing firecrackers inside of a government building after McViegh bombed a freaking day-care center, that is so mature, and such a humorous prank. Enjoy your time in prison pal. Being a former DA and all, I'm sure you'll get all kinds of respect in the prison yard.
christ almighty you politically correct douches disgust me.
i dont like republicans either, but who the fuck do you all think you're kidding. you all know you've had porn on your computer or laughed at a racist joke at some point.
Sounds like some more of that Republican "sense of humor."
Since there's such a thing as a bone called the humor, does the Republican sense of humor mean he's felling up his own bone?
What a disgusting PIG! I can't wait until these creepy Republicans leave the white house. YES WE CAN!
Good riddance! Chuckie is nothing more than a death-penalty monger.

Now, I'm not defending this guy's character, but you can have all kinds of junk on your harddrive and you would never know.
saw this last week, was wondering if, as the DA, he or his crony the Sheriff were the titular head of the now notorious Harris County Crime Lab. Lots of folks (12 ?, 17 ?) wrongly convicted in death penalty cases w/ faulty forensics
He looks like one of GWB's NAZI SS officers, exicute the dumb bastard

Well sure, but WE aren't in a position that such material would be a bad thing. Ya know...a DA should absolutely NOT have this on a govt. owned PC! (I am assuming it was on a govt. pc) This isn't about politically correct "douches" being overly sensitive.
This is about a govt. official havin obscene and racist material on his computer. DUH!

If y'all think this guy's bad, you should check out craigslist's rants & raves Houston forum. You'd be amazed at the level of racism, ignorance and stupidity of Houstonians. For all his education, legal abilities and political history, he's just a local yokel.
Sadly, I live here and it ain't easy!
Ya gotta just love these people who boast about their christian "values" and "family values".
Oh joy, another week another repub in the shitter.. A D.A. no less, neck deep in a scandal... This time revolving around porn and racism...So where's the bathroom stall angle and the underaged pageboy? Frankly I can't speak for anyone else, but it's pretty much got to the point where I just don't have much faith and trust in any aspect of this government or this cultures institutions anymore and I defy anyone to show me why I should...
Law enforcement? Nope, not with L.A. beatdowns, Oakland riders, and that's just two scandals off the top of my head.. Graft and corruption at the highest law enforcement levels... ongoing, whether anyone is aware this minute or not.. The FDA? Hell, no, they can't protect or gaurentee the food supply and in fact are now, nothing more than political shills and cover providers for big food agra conglomerates...An industry who really don't give a shit about anything but making money.. Or maybe this whole cloning food shit isn't about making another dollar while using all of our guts as a petri dish to test this bullshit on...
The EPA? Yea, right, won't protect the environment, works to undermine protections still in place... Great only at framing programs for the Bush administration in the most insepid 1984 type newspeak... Clear skies anyone? how bout a polution credit.. Beats the hell out of actually reducing pollution across the board. If all you want to do is 'look' like your doing something....The EPA, good at that pretending shit now... No legitimacy as far as I'm concerned.... Not anymore...
FBI, CIA, the executive branch of our government, the judiciary, the legislative? ....No no no no and no, not any longer... For reasons I shouldn't have to detail at this point... Quicky synopsis just for those who have slept thru the last 50 years? The truth about J. Edgar and his uses of that law enforcement agency blows the lid off of the propaganda that Efrem Zembalist Jr. fed us when we were kids... The CIA Well it ain't Matt Helms or some American James Bond, looking to thwart international eee-veeiilll. We got our very own black ops off the books that sully our reputation as honest arbiters of international issues.. And that's the least of it...
The judiciary? Packed with rightwing fascist loving zealots who will bless the undermining of the constitution, if, in the process, their sacred positions in this society are preserved and/or enhanced. The executive branch? George W. Bush.. nuff said about that... The legislative branch? cowards, and self agrandizing hypocrits who will condemn, chastise publicly, and jail if possible an athlete for killing him or herself with steroids.. Yet at the same time and without batting an eyeless in guilt or remorse, refuses to do their consittutional duty when high crimes and misdemeanors are ongoing right in front of their self blinded faces by the president, vice president and their underlings...
Yea, can't say I trust any of them anymore.. Why do that in the face of this reality? Ya know what, trust the people, I work with and look in the eye everyday, I might trust the beatcop who walks my neighborhood if I have a chance to get to know him and see how he/she operates... Other than that? It's pretty much getting down to a dog eat dog existance and everyone better look out for themselves and cover their own asses... Yep, that's some kind of fucking progress for humanity in the 21st century ain't it.... Bah, fuck it all...Noone in a position to do anything really gives a rats ass near as I can tell anyway...
Yea, I care, and most of the people on this blog and some others care... And the truth is all our care, aingst and collective bitching along with $2.50 still won't buy ya a gallon of gas in many places anymore... Just seems like all the real money power in this world just wants to screw us all period... All us supposed 'unpeople'.. And they work to coopt and undermine all these insitutions I just spent all this time bitching about... I can only hope to God, Allah, Budda, my favorite porn starlet or whomever you, the reader like that the next administration has some kind of real plan to address at least some of this shit...Ya know, that's just me trying to come up with some kind of positive spin for this very negative depressing post... Don't think I quite pulled that one off though.... JD
Why would he feel compelled to resign? He is acting like a true republican. We expect this kind of conduct from them.
