Via Newsweek:

In his 30-plus-year legal career in Harris County, Texas, Chuck Rosenthal has been no stranger to controversy. As a prosecutor he lit firecrackers in the stairwell of the district attorney's offices soon after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings. (It was a prank, he said.) After he was elected DA in 2000 he called the death penalty a "biblical proposition" and lobbied unsuccessfully to maintain Texas's sodomy law...

Rosenthal is back in the headlines again. Last December, as part of a federal civil rights lawsuit into how justice is meted out in the county, he turned over the (partial) contents of his government e-mail account. And what a batch of e-mails it was. Black ministers called for the Republican to resign because of racist material, including a cartoon depicting an African-American suffering from a "fatal overdose" of watermelon and fried chicken. There were adult video clips and love notes from Rosenthal to his secretary, his mistress during a previous marriage.

Now it appears that Rosenthal's on-the-job antics have done him in. In the wake of the e-mail revelations, local GOP leaders forced him to abort his re-election bid. Then, on Feb. 15, after Lloyd Kelley, the attorney in the civil rights case, brought a lawsuit accusing him of drinking on the job and "incompetence, or official misconduct," Rosenthal resigned. Read on...

The article also states that Rosenthal isn't out of the woods yet. Following in the footsteps of the Bush administration and the GOP, it appears he deleted e-mails he was supposed to have saved and could be in some hot water.

I am not a big fan of this.

As an IT professional, I know how EASY it is to send emails to a person and mark them as read, or even (slightly harder - slightly) to place certain files on a person's computer.

This is a future blackmail scenario - if you don't follow our policy, Mr. politician, certain child porn files will find a way into your computer (wink wink nudge nudge).

Most of these government guys have no clues about personal computers, and anyway, there could be a "technician" who puts a very small USB drive into the computer (these things are small and hold gigabytes by now) which would automatically load stuff into a computer.

Heck, we have infrared now - stuff can be downloaded into your computer from very far away with a powerful beam.

Yes, slowly but surely we are getting into the Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex and Section 9 territory....

Hey, I am from Houston, and this has been a big story for a couple of months. The guy that sent him the racist stuff and the porn is the husband of his top da, that is running to replace him. The law suit that started it all comes from if I remember a 2004 arrest of a couple of brothers that videotaped a drug raid next door to there house, when the police say them taping the harassesd and arressted them. It started with the love letters to his secretary, and it just snowballed from there. I am glad he's out, but I expect another rethuglican will replace him, in a couple of years, it'll be the same story over and over agian.

OK, I wouldn't trust someone who DOESN'T have porn and tasteless jokes on their computer.

Next time, pay closer attention to the article. It says very clearly that this was on his governmental e-mail account, the account which he uses for his work as a District Attorney. It's one thing to have porn and racist jokes on your home computer, quite another to have them on your office computer -- with racist jokes, doubly so when objectivity towards other people is supposed to be part of your job requirement. His behavior is not just inappropriate, it's pathologically stupid -- most people by now know very well (and if they don't, they should) that most employers do not consider professional e-mail accounts private, and employers have a point. Although the article doesn't make it clear whether the e-mail messages containing racist jokes and adult video clips were messages which Rosenthal sent or merely ones which he received -- but if they included ones which he sent, most private companies would consider this an abuse of company privileges since messages sent from a company account could potentially reflect on the company's reputation because there's no way to control where those messages go once they're sent -- and most private companies would be considered within their rights to terminate an employee who persisted in doing such things. If Rosenthal wants to send or receive racist jokes and adult video clips, let him do it from his home computer -- it's not as if a District Attorney can't afford one!

"...in response to the new lawsuit, he blamed a combination of prescription drugs for causing 'some impairment' of his judgment."

So he's been forwarding racist emails and looking at porn on his office computer, deleting files that were presumably worse, committing perjury, supposedly drinking on the job, and on top of all that he's eating pills that "cause impairment".

He's going to go down hard, but that's probably little comfort to all the young black men he's thrown the book at for first-time drug offenses. They're not likely to get out any sooner just because it turns out some old white Texan prosecutor is a hypocrite and a racist.

Would you say that the technology exists to activate different portions of the firmware that is embedded into all chips by the manufacturer, through a signal as limited in strength as say a GPS type source... by satellite... ?
YES!
Firmware that could place just about anything onto your computer, by satellite command, through code that was placed there by the "Proprieter"!
Language code that could be written to allow for various results at the user end.
It's goning to be a free for all in cyber space soon.

Say it ain't so! Another flaming hypocritical Republican scumbag? I'll give him kudos for not blaming the "librul media" for his woes. It was the "prescription drugs" (aka hillbilly heroin I'm sure). Of course he say he's sorry (translation: sorry he got caught, sorry that someone exposed him). Just once I'd like to see one of these dirtbags just own up to what they did and take their lumps. Yeah, and throwing firecrackers inside of a government building after McViegh bombed a freaking day-care center, that is so mature, and such a humorous prank. Enjoy your time in prison pal. Being a former DA and all, I'm sure you'll get all kinds of respect in the prison yard.

The moral of this story is DON'T STEP ON TOES. I think he did.

It doesn't even have to be very high tech. Kinda reminds me of a time in the 80's when a supervisor in my office received a racist fax. She got chewed out for it, even though she had no control over the person who sent it.
Now, I'm not defending this guy's character, but you can have all kinds of junk on your harddrive and you would never know.

Oh joy, another week another repub in the shitter.. A D.A. no less, neck deep in a scandal... This time revolving around porn and racism...So where's the bathroom stall angle and the underaged pageboy? Frankly I can't speak for anyone else, but it's pretty much got to the point where I just don't have much faith and trust in any aspect of this government or this cultures institutions anymore and I defy anyone to show me why I should...

Law enforcement? Nope, not with L.A. beatdowns, Oakland riders, and that's just two scandals off the top of my head.. Graft and corruption at the highest law enforcement levels... ongoing, whether anyone is aware this minute or not.. The FDA? Hell, no, they can't protect or gaurentee the food supply and in fact are now, nothing more than political shills and cover providers for big food agra conglomerates...An industry who really don't give a shit about anything but making money.. Or maybe this whole cloning food shit isn't about making another dollar while using all of our guts as a petri dish to test this bullshit on...

The EPA? Yea, right, won't protect the environment, works to undermine protections still in place... Great only at framing programs for the Bush administration in the most insepid 1984 type newspeak... Clear skies anyone? how bout a polution credit.. Beats the hell out of actually reducing pollution across the board. If all you want to do is 'look' like your doing something....The EPA, good at that pretending shit now... No legitimacy as far as I'm concerned.... Not anymore...

FBI, CIA, the executive branch of our government, the judiciary, the legislative? ....No no no no and no, not any longer... For reasons I shouldn't have to detail at this point... Quicky synopsis just for those who have slept thru the last 50 years? The truth about J. Edgar and his uses of that law enforcement agency blows the lid off of the propaganda that Efrem Zembalist Jr. fed us when we were kids... The CIA Well it ain't Matt Helms or some American James Bond, looking to thwart international eee-veeiilll. We got our very own black ops off the books that sully our reputation as honest arbiters of international issues.. And that's the least of it...

The judiciary? Packed with rightwing fascist loving zealots who will bless the undermining of the constitution, if, in the process, their sacred positions in this society are preserved and/or enhanced. The executive branch? George W. Bush.. nuff said about that... The legislative branch? cowards, and self agrandizing hypocrits who will condemn, chastise publicly, and jail if possible an athlete for killing him or herself with steroids.. Yet at the same time and without batting an eyeless in guilt or remorse, refuses to do their consittutional duty when high crimes and misdemeanors are ongoing right in front of their self blinded faces by the president, vice president and their underlings...

Yea, can't say I trust any of them anymore.. Why do that in the face of this reality? Ya know what, trust the people, I work with and look in the eye everyday, I might trust the beatcop who walks my neighborhood if I have a chance to get to know him and see how he/she operates... Other than that? It's pretty much getting down to a dog eat dog existance and everyone better look out for themselves and cover their own asses... Yep, that's some kind of fucking progress for humanity in the 21st century ain't it.... Bah, fuck it all...Noone in a position to do anything really gives a rats ass near as I can tell anyway...

Yea, I care, and most of the people on this blog and some others care... And the truth is all our care, aingst and collective bitching along with $2.50 still won't buy ya a gallon of gas in many places anymore... Just seems like all the real money power in this world just wants to screw us all period... All us supposed 'unpeople'.. And they work to coopt and undermine all these insitutions I just spent all this time bitching about... I can only hope to God, Allah, Budda, my favorite porn starlet or whomever you, the reader like that the next administration has some kind of real plan to address at least some of this shit...Ya know, that's just me trying to come up with some kind of positive spin for this very negative depressing post... Don't think I quite pulled that one off though.... JD
