Speaking of death and destruction, Homeland Security is forcing the Apache people from their lands in Texas and destroying the community there to build a border fence.

Buckley died from embarrassment.

All that Gingrich bootlicking and fine argument about Reagan's superior moral values (selling weapons to Iran) produced Boy Wonder and the staggering, bubo-encrusted drunk of the neocon-lican party.

What a life of stupidity dressed up in intellectual charm earns you. Lie down with oil men, get up bathed in bloody grease, Bill. No wonder you checked out.

One thing I'll say for William F. Buckley: he not only represented but personally radiated the true essence of conservatism: anti-democratic elitism -- as opposed to the modern day conservatives who mask their corporate/big business elitism with faux "populist clothes."

It is no longer possible to separate those deaths from deaths in Afghanistan CAUSED by diversion of men and materiel to Iraq. How many soldiers died in Afghanistan as a direct result of the focus on Iraq?

3973

4456

And ten times that many permanently injured.

And 2000 times that many Iraqis likely blown to bits.

Paul in LA's picture

And of that, 425 Californians, nearly a tenth of the Iraq-Afghanistan total, more than any other state.

LAS CRUCES, N.M., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Bill Richardson has assured the New Mexico taxpayer will foot the bill for another in a series of poor decisions made by private counsel and political allies who stand to gain from his reckless decisions. Yesterday, the Richardson Administration used Gestapo tactics to block access to Federal Indian Trust property by tribal employees, workers, and tribal members of the Fort Sill Apache tribe in Akela, New Mexico. The Fort Sill Apache tribe will not be bullied by these corrosive attempts to destroy our longstanding agreements with the Federal Government, said Tribal Chairman Jeff Houser.

The Father of the conservative guiding principle of 'Intellectual Dishonesty', William F. Buckley was the originator of the smarmy, manipulating "I'm better than you because I'm richer than you" bully-smirk that's so prevalent on Fox News today. And now is revered by 'Yellow Elephant' Republicans everywhere, self-serving soldiers of Darwinian Capitalism that they are.
Yeah, that's a great contribution to mankind.

Buckley was a crypto-fascist tool.

If it were up to conservatives, we'd still be an English colony.

Wow....just five soldiers killed in Iraq this week....for nothing. We must be winning??

Is this the price we are supposed to be satisfied with?....five a week?

What a crying shame. And FOR NOTHING!! This is such a total waste of human life.

we could save a lot of lives if we just
put bush and cheney on the front line
of the iraq war with the same kind of
equipment they sent our soldiers with
in the first place...........totally inadequate
and unsafe.

JFK number of war deaths? ZERO to very few.

LBJ was a jackal during the cold war, when we had 10,000 ACTUAL nuclear weapons pointed at us. There is no comparison now.

W's death toll is from an illegal, genocidal policy which matches very well to Vietnam in its PUBLIC death toll (1 million dead). He has committed an almost endless number of atrocities.

Since you're defending him, you wear the blood of the innocent. Try washing that off.

Of course, Buckley was an important ideological father figure for the now crumbling reactionary base of the Republican party. But back in the 60s, Goldwater and Buckley and Reagan were correctly labeled "reactionaries", not conservatives. These guys and the two generations of followers at the AIE, Cato, Hoover, WSJ Ed board, the clear majority of Republicans in Congress and most state legislatures, and right wing talk show hosts don't want to "conserve anything -- their reactionary agenda that the John Birchers and National Review started in the 50s achieved a reversion from then current institutions back to an imaginary past. They ended estate taxes so that most wealth never gets taxed even once, lifted industry oversight by starving regulatory agencies while they put the fox in charge of the henhouse, gutted affirmative action, pack the courts with hanging judges and pro-business ideologues, and pursued gunboat diplomacy that would have made Teddy Roosevelt envious. Democrats and the press need to refer to these so-called "conservatives" as reactionaries once more.
Unlike Republicans, Dems eat their own and forget there greatest figures. When Gene McCarthy died not long ago, the most influential Democrat of the past 50 years was barely given any notice. He had he bad luck to die the same day as Richard Prior, a derivative comic who spent most of his career boring Merv Griffin audiencies as a poor man's Cosby/Dick Gregory when he wasn't starring in the most unintentionally funny movie of all time (Wild in the Streets), died the same day.

Paul in LA's picture

EconProf @ 22:

Richard Prior, a derivative comic who spent most of his career boring Merv Griffin audiencies

You were right until you displayed your (closet racism?) attack on R. Pryor, quite possibly the funniest comedian of the later 20th Century. His schtick showed an almost impossible capacity for mimicry, for those little stories he told which held audiences in rapt hysteria for HOURS.

I agree that McCarty's passage was not given good enough coverage -- that's because the media is not under our control and doesn't even try to be worthy of their licences. That's going to change. By 2010 we will be dismantling FOX and the other media monopolies.

We need to shift the 1 in 100 imprisonment machine until its lawnmower is clipping the little bastards where they live.

Paul in LA's picture

Great as they were, Dick Gregory and Cosby don't hold a candle to Pryor for his mimicry talents.

Cosby's main attraction was being a nice guy who was able to integrate his audience. Great, as such. But if you think he was more talented than Pryor, you missed out.

William F Buckley's stance against socialized schools and medical system was in direct contradiction to his Catholic faith. Hello Spirit Buckley Jesus was a socialist!

Not much in the MSm about what is taking place in the Gaza. Not much in the so called "progressive" blogosphere either

ANYONE HEAR OR SEE ANY NEWS ON WHAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN THE GAZA THE LAST FEW DAYS ON OLBERMAN, MATTHEWS, FOX OR ANYWHERE ELSE?

Since the majority of the US media is shut down to what is taking place in the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Here are a few links to here a Palestinian reporter from the Gaza. Who reports that 130 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli’s in the last few days… 39 of them children. Three Israeli’s have been killed.

The Palestinian reporter describes smelling flesh and seeing arms legs and fingers of Palestinians in the streets

http://www.democracynow.org/
Really worth the listen..the whole show

Amy Goodman also interviews A reporter from the Jewish media outlet Haartz, She reports that there is no news about what is really taking place for the Palestinians in the Gaza.

Very serious blog clogs on what is taking place in the Gaza. (no one thing written on Firedoglake an "alleged" progressive blog. This blog and many others have very serious clogs about this issue. Oh they will kick and scream and make excuses... Jane Hamsher and Christy Hardin Smith think by writing the word Israel or Palestinians in the title of something they are writing about this critical issue, but they know they are too chickenshit to turn their writing abilities and insightful coverage of other critical issues to the I/P conflict (I mean come on it is just one of the most serious issues in the middle east, it is just one of the main reasons that so many in the middle east hate the U.S.)

We have come to expect this lack of coverage from Olberman, Matthews, Scarborough and Fox. I know this has been the case in the blogosphere also.

http://firedoglake.com/page/3/

See if you can find anything written about this issue in the blogosphere that is fair and balanced.. Or anything at all. Nothing at FDL
