Double Bombing in Baghdad: 53 killed, 125 wounded

CNN's Kyra Phillips is reporting that two bomb attacks killed 53 and wounded as many as 125.

CNN:

Fifty-three people were killed and 125 were wounded in two bomb attacks Thursday evening in a Baghdad commercial district, an Interior Ministry official said. A roadside bomb exploded first, around 7 p.m., in the central Baghdad district of Karrada, killing and wounding a number of people, the Interior Ministry official said.

As others gathered to help the wounded, a suicide bomber amid the crowd detonated an explosive vest, killing and wounding many more, the official said. The majority of causalities occurred during the second attack, the official said.

Looks like bomb attacks are on the move in Iraq ............

K's picture

So glad to hear everything's still going so well over there. Rah, Surge!

Seriously, though, this is heartbreaking ... and even more so because Iraq usually gets buried on the back pages (if covered at all) since American death counts started going down.

Just from the portion that C&L posted it is clear that the "surge" mainly in and around Baghdad has accomplished little. It is also clear that the Iraqi Government also controls nothing. Whoever carried out this multiple bombing had time to plan for it, select a target where there would be maximum casualties and was able to put their suicide bombers into place before being detected by security forces.

Nothing in Iraq has changed because the many variations of fighters remain and always will. This latest bombing attack is just another horrific shattering of the security illusion that the Bush Administration is trying to create for the American public.

P.D.'s picture

And here I thought the surge was a success. Why isn't this all over MSM? MSNBC just had the skank Coulter on prattling how she might campaign for Hillry, but they don't mention anything about the Iraq and Afghanistan. I get more and more depressed every single day.

So it looks like the infamous "surge" has surged itself out now? It never did work without Bush paying Al Sadr $1.2 billion a week for a cease fire as a "payoff" for helping to make Bush and McSame look good (along with Betray-us, of course).

So what is it? Is Bush's Surge working or not? Can't have it both ways? Frankly, I think his surge has $hit the bed myself.

Thanks for the reminder, Pete, of yet another bold-faced lie in our faces. Someday Rummy, Deadeye, and Chimpy will be strung up by their gonads for what they've done and the crimes they've committed.

Hats off to Vermont for issuing warrants for their arrest. If every state would do so, they'd all be run out of the country. Either that or we could slap their sick patoots right into jail for a very long time.

As Congressman Murtha and others have pointed out, it is the antagonistic presence of the U.S. military that is inflaming the resistance fighters. Still, all the major presidential contenders are against the immediate withdrawal of the troops from that slaughterhouse in Iraq. Having American forces in the Middle East is exactly what the foreign fighters had hoped the U.S. would do and the U.S. stupidly went ahead and has done exactly that. The Democrats seem to be engaging in a contest to determine who between the two of them is the most militaristic to qualify for the belligerent title of commander in chief. All the more reason to seriously think of voting for an alternative such as a third party candidate in 2008, who would believe that the best way of supporting the troops is to extricate them out of that abyss as quickly and as rapidly as possible, which would mean, contrary to the Democrats' wishes, an immediate, not a phased withdrawal, of those troops from Iraq. It also does not mean leaving them to linger and fight al Qaeda [which is exactly what the foreign jihadists want the Americans to do] or have them stationed "over the horizon."

Bring them home-alive and in one piece-NOW.

Look at almost every coup in South and Central America and you'll see the hand of the United States involved. Indonesia and the Philippines in the '60's, Iran in the '70's, Ukraine and Georgia in recent years are all places that the American government has put their own man in power. Of course, their man is usually a brutal dictator. Just ask the people of Chile or Argentina. It doesn't matter if the person they put into power is a tyrant of the worst resort, so long as he's willing to tow the line to the policy of the United States their happy. Iraq is no different than the dozens of other countries that the U. S. has raped. I'm absolutely amazed that any U. S. citizen can walk anywhere else in the world without being spat on at the very least. The record of horrors that the government has sponsored is a long, bloody, sordid one. The attacks of 9/11 are retaliation for official U.S. government policy that creates enormous suffering around the world. I feel that in the future as the American empire begins to fall worse and bloodier blowback attacks will happen to the U.S. That's of course if the U.S. doesn't blow up the world and kill us all.

The Bush administration yesterday advanced a new argument for why it does not require congressional approval to strike a long-term security agreement with Iraq, stating that Congress had already endorsed such an initiative through its 2002 resolution authorizing the use of force against Saddam Hussein.

The 2002 measure, along with the congressional resolution passed one week after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks authorizing military action "to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States," permits indefinite combat operations in Iraq, according to a statement by the State Department's Bureau of Legislative Affairs.

The statement came in response to lawmakers' demands that the administration submit to Congress for approval any agreement with Iraq. U.S. officials are traveling to Baghdad this week with drafts of two documents -- a status-of-forces agreement and a separate "strategic framework" -- that they expect to sign with the Iraqi government by the end of July. It is to go into effect when the current U.N. mandate expires Dec. 31

Isn't this the truth. They're still holding memorials for the VA Tech massacre, yet few people realize that equivalent tragedies occur in Iraq weekly. If this were happening in the US with such frequency, the nation would be at a standstill and China's manufacturing base would be put in overdrive to produce the 'memory ribbons', teddy bears and candles.

Isn't that always the way it goes. Criticize Israel and you're instantly labeled "anit-semetic". Israel always goes way to far with their retaliations. One Israeli is killed by a rocket and Israel kills 150 or so Palestinian men, women and children. How many do think they'll kill to make up for the 7 dead today? I don't condone the attacks that the Palestinians make, but I certainly understand why they do them. Israel has kept the Palestinians in virtual lockdown for over half a century. Could you imagine living in a refugee camp for 3 generations? Do you think that has anything to do with the hatred and frustration that the Plaestinians have? Israel could have made peace with their neighbours years ago, but refused time and time again to make any concessions. The unemployment rate in the Palestinian sections is over 50%. That's because now that a million or so Russian Jews emigrated to Israel and are willing to do the jobs that the Palestinians used to do, the Palestinian workers are now redundant. Total hopelessness always breeds anger and retaliation.

A century ago, there were no Geneva Conventions, no UN, and countries were free to interfere with countries all over the world, and did.

If you want to make a basket out of a century's events, and pretend to an analysis, it's like beating yourself with a history book. It takes A LOT more context than you put into your screed. Oh wait! The typical leftist screed has no context, which is why it is such great nonsense.
