It's Official: Spitzer Resigns

icon Download | play icon Download | play (h/t BillW)

A surprise to no one, Eliot Spitzer, wife Silda at his side, resigned from his position as Governor of New York. Lt. Governor David Paterson will replace Spitzer and be the first African American and the first legally blind governor in New York state history. While I cannot condone what brought Spitzer to this point, I do have to give him credit for this statement:

"I have demanded that people – regardless of their position or power -- take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less from myself"

It's that simple. CREW asks when David Vitter will take similar measures.

Spitzer has just given American men another "Fatal Attraction" moment. That movie scared the crap out of men all over the country and probably reduced the rate of marital infidelity for a generation. I expect that Spitzer never saw it. Getting caught on a wiretap using hookers is going to turn a lot of congressMEN against FISA, wanting more oversight over the NSA, and high standards for court ordered taps.

As the salacious details trickle out, it's unfortunate that no attention at all is being paid for the genuinely good work that the man has done in prosecuting the misdeeds of the rich and powerful and what will happen to this effort, which still needs to carry on. It's a shame that there might be a backlash against investigating wall street, even as the financial crisis continues to unfold before us, and increasing evidence of criminal misbehavior at the top investment banks. I find it a curious coincidence that this all exploded the week after housing finance executives were brought before congress for an initial round of questioning. There are some in the industry that are undoubtedly deserving of some jail time (based on some information I have from a top corporate banking insider). Hopefully, this scandal won't prevent some kind of justice from being carried out. I am convinced that Spitzer was targeted in some way, which doesn't excuse his actions, but gives an indication of the immense forces that are at work to protect the vested interests of the powerful and wealthy.

David Letterman delivered some appropirately indignant remarks about Spitzer. How dare he use his political appointment to leverage his future. How dare he waste taxpayer's time to figure out how to facilitate a turnaround. In the end, Spitzer did the right thing and resigned and I expect NO LESS from the GOP, from here on out. And when they don't comply, we threaten to impeach. It can't hurt.

Spitzer's wife and kids must be suffering. I hope the press affords them some dignity. So far they have, but still - that's their father and her husband we're talking about. We know he's a shit, but they love the bastard.

Don't feel a bit sorry for him. I do feel bad for his family, who, on sooooo many levels, deserve better.

According to reports, hiring hookers has been part of his life for several years. Given how he rose to power, I think this is quite significant. It's not simply sex. He has spent thousands on hookers, and he knows the place prostitution has in larger corrupt organizations. Hiring hookers was part of his schedule as was fitting them into political trips, making phone calls to arrange trysts and moving money to pay for them.

And he tried to cover his tracks, knowing how the law works. I think this shows a fundamental disconnect between the man he is and the narrative he presented. That kind of facade does not last forever and it suggests, to me, that he was fundamentally dishonest across the board. Not a crusader at all, but an opportunist.

Glad he's gone.

(I posted this in an old Open Thread, but it seems more appropriate here)

I have no political blog, so I figured I’d say what I have to say here.

I’m tired of being a democrat, of associating with spineless cowards, who rollover whenever the Republicans crank up their marketing machine - especially in congress, but everywhere else too.

This is because of Eliot Spitzer. It is not because of what he did, but rather what he didn’t. He broke a minor law (or perhaps a major one that was obviously not intended to apply to his specific situation), and more than that, violated his obligation to his family. This is disgraceful, and he deserves all the finger wagging he gets over it. Let me be clear, this is not why this dumb scandal is the last straw for me.

His unwillingness to fight this madness, and instead to so quickly, and easily resign - that’s what did it for me. I’m tired of spineless weak gutless democrats. There is nothing more un-American that gutlessness. Republicans are crazy. They support bad, illogical, and dangerous policies, but they do it with gaul, guts and swagger - and like it or not those are American qualities - and that’s what it takes to get something done in this country.

I have nowhere else to go. I’m stuck with a choice between spineless cowardly Democrats or stupid ignorant Republicans, so I’ll probably at least choose the more thoughtful side. I’m telling you right now, and I’ll tell everyone I meet. I’m a democrat, and I’m not proud. BAH!!

He chose to go to hookers time and again. His behavior can in no way be justified by talking about a woman who has at least been married to this man, raised children and stood by while he pursued a public political career. He needed to resign. Too much crap to be able to govern. But why is it that Democrats who get caught in sex scandals have to resign and Larry Craig and Whois Vitter are still in Congress?

And no more stoic wives, please. If you have to show up it should be in a ratty old bathrobe, no make-up, red eyes and messy hair - that's where sane people go when faced with a low-down rat of a husband.

not being nasty (or too much anyway) but politicians who get caught doing hookers always have a certain type of hard faced wife.
the wife does stand by her meal ticket before the press, but you can understand why the husband went else where for sex and companionship.
they prob were getting zero at home and being treated like crap to boot.

That is nasty. No one knows what was going on at his home. This is NOT the wife's fault. Not. The. Wife's. Fault. This is HIS fault. Completely and irrevocably. He chose to go to hookers time and again. His behavior can in no way be justified by talking about a woman who has at least been married to this man, raised children and stood by while he pursued a public political career. And to rake her over the coals for her appearance at his public announcements? Pathetic.

Just let the blame lie where it belongs. With Spitzer.

I think that was pretty harsh too, he cheated...period. His fault. No one elses.
And how would YOU look if you had been cheated on and found out so publicly. Give the poor woman a break...and for the record...she's kinda easy on the eyes if ya ask me...

It's a shame that this had to happen, but Spitzer did the right thing by acknowledging what he did and resigning -- if he hadn't, he would have simply given the Republicans ammunition against him and against the Democrats as well as showing himself to be a hypocrite. While the Republicans will no doubt still try to milk this for all they can, I think Spitzer will end up stealing most of their thunder by showing himself willing to accept the consequences of his disgrace instead of protesting innocence and refusing to admit that he did anything wrong -- which is more than some Republicans can say, in spite of their predilection for pontificating on the importance of taking personal responsibility for one's actions.

The guy has been "hooking up" for years. He has had to evade his family, handlers, law and press to do this. All the while pursuing greater political office on the "clean and incorruptible" bandwagon, Spitzer has been spending money (hopefully only his, not the public's and not his wife's) with a prostitution ring likely connected to other forms of corruption, at the least money laundering.

Even if his use of such "services" and hypocritical stance is not SO bad, there should be something else that gives one pause. He is in no way what he presented himself to be. And his deception, planned, organized, financed, etc, has been going on for years. Years he was prosecuting similar organizations and talking about how they were linked to wider corruption. Years he was presenting himself to voters as a different, better public servant.

I read somewhere (sorry, don't have the link) that it was his bank that alerted the Feds, because of the pattern of cash payments out of his account over time and the fact that Spitzer asked to have his name removed from the transfer records after the fact. While I cannot condone what brought Spitzer to this point, I do have to give him credit for this statement:

“I have demanded that people – regardless of their position or power — take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less from myself”

I don't give him credit for that. He only took responsibility after he got caught. He's like the thief that's not at all sorry for his crime but is terribly sorry that he's going to jail.

Damn! Beat me to it again. I'm gonna have to start coming here first.

Even invited him to come to my state and run for the office.

Moral considerations aside, I'm just sick and tired of this "Do as I say, not as I do." attitude on the part of these politicians and I don't care which party they belong to in that regard.

2 plausible legitimate reasons:

1) the IRS discovered Spitzer was transferring money to a prostitution outfit. That's a separate crime, outside IRS jurisdiction. Out of state, no less. That makes it federal.

2) Spitzer was a big fish. Governor and former prosecutor. If evidence of a crime exists (see above), the IRS has to avoid any possible taint of political bias. Hence the referral to the appropriate law enforcement agency, in this case the FBI.

As Gov. Eliot Spitzer's (D-NY) political career comes to an end for his involvement with a prostitution ring, Sen. David Vitter, (R-LA) of "DC Madame" fame, plans to amend the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to reinsert the 33 percent abstinence-only earmark.

Maybe he should have observed abstinence when he was away from his wife and diddling prostitutes in both DC and New Orleans. Another absolute hypocrite! He was actually applauded by his GOP buddies when he returned to Congress after taking time off.

So when are William Jefferson Spitzer and Hillary going to be on stage again together? Oh, that's right, now there's Geraldine Ferraro, AND Eliot Clinton Spitzer. Could be never.

Man, it makes me wish there was another debate to make her have to answer on these two.

There's just still the issue of the security detail that was probably in on it.

Both parties deserve to be destroyed.

I absolutely detest the politics of sex in this country.

This focus is so obviously intended to divert attention away from the crimes taking place in the White House, away from the blood-flow in Iraq, away from the billions of tax-dollars fueling the military-industrial complex, away from treasonous people in high places who are either still there or working at Newsweek, away from the fricken health insurance industry screwing all USA citizens (let's focus on THAT screw job).

Nothing about sex scandals is amusing to me anymore, because I see them for what they are: intentional distractions.

No one knows what was going on at his home.

And then:

This is NOT the wife's fault. Not. The. Wife's. Fault. This is HIS fault. Completely and irrevocably.

Just let the blame lie where it belongs. With Spitzer.

So no one knows what is going at his home...except you?

.

Now,
Why is Vitter still a member of of Congress?

.

Because he is Pro-Life, For military recruitment in High Schools, Supports prayer in public schools, Pro gun with a A ratting from the NRA, Strong supporter of abstinence-only sex education, Supports a constitutional amendment to make marriage between a man and a woman, Has fought against public housing in New Orleans, fought against the SCHIP program, proposed an amendment that would bar any funds to Planned Parenthood while getting a $100,000 earmark for Louisiana Family Forum to fight against the teaching of eveloution in schools.
So he got just enough credits from GOD to let the whole hooker thing just pass.

How can someone that's prolife send people off to wars to kill or be killed?

Easy answer. They are not "pro-life." They are anti-choice.

It's rather painful to watch Eliot attempt to salvage his dignity now that's he's thinking with the head on his shoulders again. Apparently there is no pinnacle too high that these ambitious people with lots of talent but a dearth of character and self control won't hurl themselves off of.

Spitzer resigned because he's a man. Vitter has not resigned because he's not.

He did the right thing. That took some courage. good for him.
