first
Christopher Hitchens has issues.

and hes a douchbager!
...but I's the better!
'itchens is the very definition of the "loose cannon". When he trains his eye on the real enemies of humanity he possesses velvet scissors as he cuts their fatuous nonsense up. When he has had a few too many pulls at the whiskied teat of his own massive mammeries of ego, he's a veritable hollywood drunken indian stereotype of the wheelchair intellectual.

Yes but Hitchens is genuinely British, he's got that British charm that USA-folks can't resist.
Actually, Nicolle Belle has written some stuff on here that I personally found downright laughable.
Hitchens is a douche...he will ALWAYS be a douche.
Chicago Tribune publishes an article titled "The Obama I Know"
"This is the Barack Obama I have known for nearly 15 years -- a careful and evenhanded analyst of law and policy, unusually attentive to multiple points of view."
He's also been saying he will go over all those "executive orders" Bush has been signing when and if he gets into office.
They feature current and former SNL women in the issue. I'm not sure about Wiig yet, but Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are all pretty funny. Then there's Amy Sedaris and a host of non-SNL women... Hitchens is all about Hitchens and full of crap, as he often is. He should have saved it for one of his parties.
The Reality @ 8:
... "can't resist"... to what? ;)
tyree @ 3:
Teabagger, he's British.

To blog about? ;) He seems to get a lot of airtime in USA in all types of medias, I wouldn't rate him that highly as a scientist or a writer though.

I'm sorry, but Tina Fey, Amy Sedaris and Amy Poehler are all unfunny (at least as comic actors. I was rather surprised to find out that Darrell Hammond was funny doing stand-up). Also not funny: Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell, David Sedaris and Colin Quinn.
Paula Poundstone, Margaret Cho, Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres are all very funny, though. (Why are most of those lesbians? And what does that say about Paula?)
The Corporate Media didn't fully cover the 2000 Election. (No Follow Up.)

Yeah, I guess, probably because he's a bit eccentric. I bought his book, "God Is Not Great," as much as I agree, I couldn't finish it.
Ahh, Hitch. Ever the contrarian. Always willing to get people upset, often for the sake of doing so. (Who else would express feeling ennui when arriving at an atheist's convention because people were going to be so likely to agree with what he was saying?)
He posits (in the beginning, at least -- I didn't read the whole thing) that men are more funny because they need to be. It's a necessary part of wooing women. Women, on the other hand, attract men with their looks, not their humor.
I don't have to disagree with the basic idea to disagree with the conclusion that women are less funny than men. In my case, at least, (though I know I'm hardly an example from which generalizations should be readily drawn) I have found some truth to the social dynamic, but it only made me refrain from being funny. Being the funny one in a heterosexual relationship, I sometimes (though by no means always) found, intimidated my male partner.
Ehh, whatever. Don't much care for the stereotypes anyway. And I'm no longer in a heterosexual relationship, and both my partner and I are damn funny! (We make each other laugh, at least.)
:)
I hopr they get the Tracy Morgan SNL News monologue from tonight.
Christopher Hitchens is a "whirling dervish of egocentric obnoxion" (thanks, Robert Reich). Sort of a drunken literary equivalent of Li'l Tucker. Certainly no one you want to take seriously.
Still, hitchens did a couple of classic blasts of Falwell when he died.
Then he blew hanity off on hanity's own show.

Half of Edwards' delegates defected to Obama's camp.
Amy Sedaris is hilarious. Might not be everyone's sense of humor, but she is one of the more original commediennes I've scene in a while.
Dude obviously never saw Margaret Cho or Judy Tenuta do stand-up. And he's forgotten all about Lucille Ball and Madelaine Kahn. Sure, Lucy portrayed a ditsy, wacky red-head, but anybody watching her knew they were seeing pure comic genius.
As always, I read such essays wondering what's going on in the mind of the writer, namely Mr. Hitchens. Here, I see a man who feels threatened by smart, wicked-funny women, and instead prefers them dumb and pretty. That being the case, he does not find it sufficient merely to say he prefers dumb, attractive women, but to imply by the very tenor of his entire piece that if a woman actually is funny, by definition she is not really a woman, or at the least, tragically 'unfeminine'.
Hitchens is and remains a drunken, semi-literate wanker. I wish someone would take away his microphone before all the scotch shorts it out.
Is Hillary Clinton's negative campaigning paying off? Not so much.

I don't know how many times I've told people to watch that video. Fox producer: If you don't see it or hear it on the news, is it news?
I disagree with Hitchens. When I tuck package between my thighs before I tell my jokes, they come out twice as funny.
I saw his explanation - made sense to me.
I think he might be right about what he says at the beginning of the text, that men don't really look for funny women, and that women don't general try to impress men by being funny. There are funny women, though.
Emma Goldman @ 34:
He did a video reply and said just that.

tina fey is not funny.
[Deleted. YOU are not funny-Sitemonitor]
Emma Goldman @ 34:
Wrong.
Hitchens never manages to take his 'analysis' beyond his own assumptions. It's like he just comes up with his gut opinion, then picks a few odd factoids that might be seen to support it.
I honestly don't know why men seem to be funnier than women, but I don't think for a moment it's because they actually *are* funnier. I've seen men and women tell the same funny story at different times, and the woman will almost always get less of a response-- even when she seems to tell the story more skillfully.
Women don't seem to have any trouble making each other laugh, so maybe it's a matter of male/female relationships. Perhaps men aren't expecting a woman to be funny, and therefore rarely find them funny. Humor isn't something our culture associates with femininity, after all-- as Hitchens admits. Very often I think laughter is the result of *expecting* to laugh.
Christopher Hitchens is no where near teh funny. I think lolcats are more intellectual than he is as well. At least we know they're much less drunk than hiz.
A drunk attacking his strawmen
Why is someone trying to determin what men like. I like women with a sense of humor. Someone else might like a woman that's more serious. Visa versa. Case closed.

Just some humorous article on which states shouldn't be allowed to vote.
Christopher Hitchens is often obnoxious and full of shit, but there are interesting elements in his article when the universe of discussion is humanity in general. The reply by Alessandra Stanley, while more accurate and true, is not as interesting and misses to a large degree what Hitchens was saying.
Proud2bHumble Hus(in)sein @ 75:
There's also something about bandsustainability as well...
"But if they would do this, if they would stoop this low, to steal our White House, what else would they do? What else are they capable of, what else are they capable of? I want to know." ~ Michael Moore (Orwell Rolls in His Grave)
SNL was funny when it first started because, like the Daily Show, they were making serious jokes about how screwed up our country was. Once they drifted away from that it was not funny most of the time. Humor is supposed to be relevant. I can't laugh at something i can't relate to.
miss_kitty Hussein @ 78:
Some Bands are just two damned loud!
the current snl gals are very funny. granted, they aren't good actors, or good stand ups, but they are great sketch comediennes.
i didn't read the hitchens piece, but unless he said specifically "stand ups" or "comic actors," i'd include all the snl ladies under the umbrella of "funny."
maybe hitchens meant "why aren't women as drunk as i am?"
i agree, lucille ball was a genius. you'd have to look far and wide (especially during her day) to find a man willing to commit as far physically as she would, or be willing to make as big a goof of himself as she was.
really really funny stand up: ellen degeneres (tho her talk show sucks).

Ok, i just have to tell this story. I was in a Ford dealership yesterday picking up a package. They have these new Mustangs which look like retro Boss's from the 1970's and they have a Cobra on the grill which is large and mat black. I am waiting for this package so i had a look.
The sticker price was $72,000.
Basic Package $52,000.
GT Package: $20,000.
$72,000 for a car that is not exactly ALL the rage.
I don't get it.

I am sure they will, but where do people get that kind of money for a toy?
On the cover....
Amy Poehler is funny.
Sarah Silverman is occasionally funny, but her obsession with "doody" (aka coprophilia) isn't funny or edgy, it's disgusting and juvenile.
Tina Fey reminds me of Hillary Clinton. Tina is known as the first head writer of SNL. We always hear this. However, few mention that she oversaw some of the worst writing EVER on that show. She may have been the first female head writer, but that milestone went straight to hell when you look at her record.
A Hillary Clinton presidency will be exactly the same.
Yet the grim news this week that captors had sent the fingers to U.S. officials has renewed a sense of hope for relatives of Paul Reuben and four other security workers who were kidnapped in Iraq more than a year ago.

No, Ron. Everybody is Al Qaeda. The Democrats are Al Qaeda because they don't agree with the bullshit.

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin @ 103:
Sarah Silverman is teh suxx0r. Rarely, if ever funny. Give me French and Saunders any day. I saw a gal on Comedy Central last night (Megan Mooney) who had me in stitches for the entire half hour. Paul Poundstone and Ellen Degeneres were comediennes I used to regularly see in clubs. Carol Leifer too. Rosanne was funny for a long time. Jamie Leigh Curtis, Marilyn Monroe. Victoria Wood. Janeane Garafolo. Julia Louis Dreyfus. Gilda Radner. Fanny Brice. Margaret DuMont. Too many to list, really.
None of these women are the exception, but the Rule.
Ron @ 118:
I'll just step in for an assessment than shall I.

I'm already far more twisted than Hitchens could ever make me. In fact, he's kinda cute...actually straightens me out a bit, and I'm no chubby chaser, except when I'm at the lake, cuz then they're great for tubing. But you already know that, dontcha?

Greetings All. Re the putative topic of this open thread: Hitchens supports the war in Iraq and is therefore by definition an ass but, just to prove there is worth in every one he said this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUphTYPMB4o It is part one of three and is one of the most impassioned defenses of free speech I have ever heard.
Christopher Hitchens has a lot of opinions. Some of them i agree with.
Some.

I didn't even read the article because anyone who even suggests that is an ignorant slob. I have been teaching at Second City for well over twenty years and have seen what could amount to over a thousand very funny women. Just because you may see a woman that you don't think is funny, don't make that generalization. We don't do that with men and we shouldn't do that with women. idiot.

We should feel sorry for ol' Christopher. Poor bloke's not a funny bone in his goddamned body. He's a dreary sack who imbibes in the liquor so as to imagine that he is indeed funny. I know 100s of women that have more humor in their handbag than he has in the whole of his gasping carcass. I know women that can make me guffaw for hours. I mean the snap my head back and show God my glottis kind of laughter. The kind of laughter deliverd to my soul by a woman that the poor teetering Hitchens can only dream about. Funny women (perhaps all women) cause the misogynistic, inebriated urchins drinking scotch and arguing about Kafka deep within Mr. Hitchens to run screaming from the pub.
