Preaching Anti-America Hate is Okay if You're a Right-Wing Evangelical
We love The General. Frank Schaeffer at Huffpo, h/t Mike:
Every Sunday thousands of right wing white preachers (following in my father's footsteps) rail against America's sins from tens of thousands of pulpits. They tell us that America is complicit in the "murder of the unborn," has become "Sodom" by coddling gays, and that our public schools are sinful places full of evolutionists and sex educators hell-bent on corrupting children. They say, as my dad often did, that we are, "under the judgment of God." They call America evil and warn of immanent destruction. By comparison Obama's minister's shouted "controversial" comments were mild.
...Was any conservative political leader associated with Dad running for cover? Far from it. Dad was a frequent guest of the Kemps, had lunch with the Fords, stayed in the White House as their guest, he met with Reagan, [and]...became a hero to the evangelical community and a leading political instigator.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said "abortions cause breast cancer". I had to tell someone cause it just seems insane to me that a person would actually put that on their car. People are crazy.
Falwell!
"All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others." George Orwell
Glen Greenwald's post on Obama's speech also refers to Schaeffer's comments. So we know the progressive blogosphere is pointing out the double standard. How do we get the MSM to pay attention? Who will pick up such a story besides Keith Olbermann? In other words, we keep preaching to the choir. Maybe Joe and Jane Average aren't as aware as we imagine when it comes to Hagee and Parsley. Can somebody call 60 Minutes?
I turned on MSNBC just long enough to hear David Gregory and the rest of the water-carriers wringing their hands over the "Rev. Wright controversy".
Congratulations, folks, Obama's been smeared and the "liberally-biased mainstream media" will simply continue to smear Obama by 'innocently' asking "IS Obama too extremist? CAN he get out from under this Wright scandal? WILL blue-collar white voters vote for him?"
Way to be objective. The last eight years has turned America into a destitute, fascist cesspool, yet we're already busy investigating the next President's past before he even gets elected, while ignoring the 100s of existing scandals from this administration.
I'm totally f*cking pessimistic aboout this. The right/top 1% controls the media, and most voters in this country are ignorant, credulous bigots who are simply waiting to be told for whom to vote.
What's the matter with Kansas? It appears to cover half the country; that's the problem.
I live in a Diocese where the Archbishop is certifiable....literally. He hands out excommunications like they are party favors, and he stated in 2004 that if John Kerry were to ask for the sacraments in St. Louis, he would refuse him Holy Communion.
Now I don't agree with this guy about almost anything. I am, however, a member of the church he heads in St. Louis. If someone assumed my views based on his statements, he or she would be wrong. I would bet Obama is pretty much the same way....sees that there may be some things he agrees with his pastor about, but more that he doesn't. What's the big fuss? Probably 75% of thinking people who attend a church don't agree with lots of what is said there. The key word in the last sentence is thinking.
debg @ 4:
That implies that Joe Average believes in the unfairness of the double standard. Part of the standard talking-points of your modern right-winger is that they embrace hypocrisy as their birthright. The ability to give oneself the benefit of the doubt, while inevitably excoriating your opponent for identical crimes, is part and parcel of the modern Republican mind.
I was baptised and confirmed as an Episcopalian and attended church until I was at least sixteen. I never heard our Reverend blame the government or black people for anything.
It is long past time that WE showed the media that we are sick and tired of this crap--we should call a 2 week boycott of MSNBC, FOX, and CNN--do you have any idea how much damage that would cause them? Their advertiser's check every morning on what the overnight ratings were for the prior day and when they see a trend the become VERY unhappy.
This is the only way that will stop the racism by these "journalists". I'm willing to bet that Scarborugh has a set of white sheets in the trunk of his car--I know Buchanan does. I'm just sick and tired of this shit.
The wet dream of the Repuke party is to run against Hillary and the media is going to see that it happens. We have the power to really nail them. Let's do it.
Is it wrong to ask, "Who would Jesus hate?"
This is the night that most Christians observe as the night upon which Jesus, the only Son of the one and Only God, was betrayed and handed over to be sacrificed for the forgiveness of YOUR sins and MY sins. The sacrifice of the sins of conservatives and liberals, Republicans and Democrats, and even the Communists. Sacrifice as in torture and murder. Punishment for everyone who ever lived and will ever live, taken upon one and only Man who was or ever will be sinless and blameless. Why? Because Jesus and the Triune God loves everyone, and even YOU.
Life is a job. You get $14.50 a day, but after you die, you have to pay for your sins. Stealing a hub cap is around $100. Masturbation is 35 cents (it doesn't seem like much, but it adds up). If there's money left when you subtract what you owe from what you've earned, you can go to heaven. If not, you have to go back to work. (Sort of like reincarnation -- many nuns are Mafia guys working it off.)--Father Guido Sarducci
This is how they see it except they are paid better because they are Christians.
Amy @ 1:
That's nothing, in Syracuse about a year ago they had a billboard with that nonsense and a blown up image of a fetus. I am soooooooo glad I no longer live there.
Very true. Don't forget Falwell and Robertson even opposed Gay Adoption of Highways!
I think that Corporate Amerika has decided that Hillary is going to be the nominee and they are just doing this smear campaign to as a psychological ploy to confuse Americans. When they steal the nomination from Obama; it is going to get ugly.
debg @ 4:
You could try, or you can go to cbs.com and look for the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page and e-mail them. Same for most media outlets. Inundate these people with messages and eventually one of them will pay attention. I plan to do this and suggest others here do the same.
TAX THE CHURCHES!
Let's go over this again.
All religions are completely fucked, and anyone who believes in any of that nonsense is certifiable.
Chuck @ 15:
The reason they want Hillary to be the nominee is they think that McCain can beat her. Rush, Coulter and Hannity have all said so. They will smear whoever wins the nomination. They have just begun to realize that Obama has a good chance to win the nomination and the GE. The media is complicit in the smears.
AMEN! About time someone spoke up about the hypocrisy.
Jesus Hussein Christ @ 18:
I'll have the last laugh.
Amy @ 1:
My favorite bumper sticker is a classic from the 80's that said "the moral majority is neither".
Jesus Hussein Christ @ 18:
Agreed. Praize da Lord and pass the ammo is so 1800s in thinking.
Media Muncher @ 11:
This is what was indoctrinated into you most likely from the time you could talk (possibly earlier). Don't worry, i grew up the same way. It just isn't true, is all. When you finally accept that Jesus was a myth into your life you will see the world in all its possibilities. Take it on faith. I do.
Media Muncher @ 21:
Have it, then.
My experience has been that so many are waiting for their "reward", (or for the born agains, the rapture) that they forget to just be decent human beings. Treat others as you would like to be treated. That includes, blacks, Jews, gays, Wiccans (I'm looking at you ysbaddaden) and any other human variety you can think of. It's just not that hard. You don't need a book, or a bearded puppet guy in the sky to tell you how to do it, either.
Gretchen @ 22:
Mine is 'obsfucate the obvious'
Media Muncher @ 11:
I never understood how he could die for MY sins before I was even born? Is that like a prophylactic thing? Can I now sin with no repercussions?
I thought the flip side of free will was responsibility. How can I be responsible independent of free will?
If you are going to live your life by something, at least make it internally consistent.
Media Muncher @ 11:
Really? I thought it was the weekend that the Easter Bunny was shot by Elmer Fudd, and when resurrected had the uncanny ability to shit chocolate eggs. Is this not true? So next you'll say there is no Santa Claws!

Amen bluegal it happens every day all day in these churches.
But I guess it's ok for these whites
Rev. Wright isn't a racist.
Go Obama!
Go USA!
Society is sick. Our news cries aloud daily of our chronic, diseased, zero sum existence, and yet this constant exposure of our illnesses - from the seven deadly sins to the immoralities we perpetrate - seem to linger and fester still. When will we address these issues and confront them? The term hypocrite doesn't suffice to negate our inability to penetrate the deep seeded maladies of our lives.
Even our enemies say we are decadent, immoral, nihilistic, and racist. That we are ignorant of our western influence upon their younger societal members.
"Young Muslim men entering higher education with positive expectations of the west find themselves isolated by poverty and the clumsy insensitivity of the 'McWorld' society which diminishes and excludes them (the idea of Jihad vs McWorld was developed by Benjamin Barber in Atlantic Monthly in March 1992). The sense of outrage is exacerbated by an increasing self-image as an underclass, confronted in every aspect by gross, enveloping western culture. The last citadels of their religion and Islamic lifestyle are continuously threatened by universal images which bombard them through advertising, television, branded merchandise, globally imposed conventions of eating, sexual codes, politics, education and even dress.
At a national level they see corrupt and undemocratic Muslim governments kept in power by American support and the constant spectacle of the Israeli war machine crushing the Palestinians in their own homeland."

The guy who made the film was raised into a very religious family, including an almost cult like school system. Best part of the movie is when he goes back to his old school, and questions the school headmaster about the beliefs they brainwashed into the children. When the questioning gets "tough", the interview is declared over by a shocked headmaster that doesn't know how to answer.
Amy @ 1:
Especially when men can get breast cancer too.
I wrote a very similar piece, from a more Catholic point of reference.
Excellent question, about time someone asked.
Barney Hussein Google @ 17:
They should be taxed. If they talk politics from the pulpit in any way, shape or form. Separation of church and state runs two ways, you know. Most churches seem to forget that little point. Scream like crazy when the government interferes with the right to practice their religion, yet endorse political goals in their sermons and teachings. That is part of the hypocrisy that led me right out of Christianity for over 20 years. I now am part of a congregation that does not allow politics, hate or intolerance in our midst and believes in attending to our own sins rather than finger pointing at others. We're out there, but we're a tiny minority.
tHeGaMeHusseinOfLiFe @ 36:

I say we fight them on their own fear. They post a contraversal vid, we post five plus a cartoon to show them how stupid and hypocritical they actually are.
Then again it's less than 30% of the US population who can't get any smarter.

Mark Twain's War Prayer
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The messenger of the Most High waits!"
It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was no sense in what he said.

She is still whining about FL and MI like she didn't know it's a dead horse.

yeah, i'm watching KO too, this is messed the hell up. 2 state dept. guys fired. freaky stuff
tHeGaMeHusseinOfLiFe @ 51:
Speaking of Hillary, check out this article at Huffington Post, written by Barbara Ehrenreich. C'mon Hillarybots, let's see you call Ms. Ehrenreich a misogynist.

KO is reporting on two Department of State emplotees being fired for investigating Obama's passport records.
*sigh* Jesus, do you have to wear the lapel pin too?
xoites Hussein defends Constitution @ 54:
I suspect they're getting fired for getting CAUGHT hacking into his passport records. By the way, what were they expecting to find?
Don't you get it. It's not anger about an issue it's not about stating a position It's about that one step further--- hate. Stating a position is a personal and religious right. Using anger in an argument helps underscore its veracity. Hate serves nothing. It is an irrational and destructive reaction to fear, misunderstanding, or ignorance.
It is not acceptable no matter what venue it is expounded, pulpit or not.
Any clergyman that uses it is contemptible scum. Anyone who, by his own free will, continually accepts it is no better. Obama accepted, personally, the statements of hate by this scum for 20 years. As far as I'm concerned it shows a person in dire need of redemption.
RLF @ 57:
Ok, get back to us when McInsane throws Hagee and Pat Robertson under the bus. Until then STFU
geneHUSSEIN214 @ 58:
I'm sorry were these guys mccains personal clergy for twenty years?
And he should denounce them anyhow.
"I’m sorry were these guys mccains personal clergy for twenty years?
And he should denounce them anyhow."
Jesus, you're stupid, and apparently haven't listened to what Barack said, or thought to yourself how outrageous it would be for Wright to have espoused this kind of rhetoric for "20 years" which, he did not.
Besides, the issue isn't a specific religious individual, it's ALL religious individuals. Aligning yourself with anyone who believes in the fairy tale of the supernatural shouldn't be trusted, as their "judgement" (a nice term Obama throws around all over the place) is so cloudy that they'd use blind-faith as good enough reason to follow something so closely, and keep it so close to their heart.
I don't trust anyone who subscribes to religion. They're all completely delusional.
RLF @ 59:
Uh yeah, since you're so worked up about "hate". Oh, I get it! You only give a shit about "hate" when a black man (rightfully) criticizes America. Now go away troll - no more feedings for you!
geneHUSSEIN214 @ 53:
Damn that very interesting. Thanks.
Hey, it just dawned on me. Some of the people who call Barack Obama a rascist, may in fact be rascists.
Falwell, Wright, Robertson, Peace Churches, Jimmy Carter, The Pope, Jessee Jackson, Jeannine Gramick, and the rest are all one in the same.
What they preach is faith through stupidity. They preach the belief in the supernatural. They are all part and parcel to the dumbing down of society, and should be shunned.
Jesus Hussein Christ @ 60:
Normally i'd ignore a comment like yours. But by your own logic Obama is delusional and you support the delusional candidate? So your part of the delusional party?
Didn't you here? they merged with the repugs you better change your affiliation immediately to repugdelusion.
geneHUSSEIN214 @ 61:
I'm sorry. I'm not a troll. You actually have to answer my arguments.
tHeGaMeHusseinOfLiFe @ 62:
You're welcome, TgOL. Mike Malloy mentioned that article on his show last night, and I checked it out and thought I should pass it on to my fellow C&L readers. I suspect people really don't know the real Hillary.
Jesus Hussein Christ @ 64:
I've gotta disagree with you on Jimmy Carter. That man never imposed his religious beliefs on anyone while he was in office. His knowlege of Biblical history (true Biblical History, not the perverse tripe peddled by your average "Rev" Billy Bob Methfreak) is unequaled and served him well as President.
abarts @ 8:
well gosh, arent you special
the fact remains, the christian right, on a daily basis screams about this country being immoral and evil
Why is this site comparing what Obama's Pastor did to White hating racists? In both cases...they are despicable. Any continuation to "justify" what was said just digs the hole deeper.
Interesting. I didn't know this.
Before the McCain-Hagee love fest, there was the Lieberman-Hagee love fest.
Glenn Greenwald, July 26, 2007:
[...]
I begin by thanking your founder, Pastor John Hagee. I would describe Pastor Hagee with the words the Torah uses to describe Moses, he is an "Eesh Elo Kim," a man of God because those words fit him; and, like Moses he has become the leader of a mighty multitude in pursuit of and defense of Israel . . .
[...]
Pastor Hagee, I pray that God will bless you with all that you pray for, and I do so with great confidence because I know what the Lord said to Abraham in Genesis 12:3. If ever there was a man who will be blessed because he has blessed Israel, Pastor Hagee, it is you.
The charges put forth by the wingnuts on the right are about America's 'sins' and thus hold forth the possibility of 'redemption' for the COUNTRY (dont'cha know)!
It would be much harder for the Right and the MSM to make Wright an issue for Obama if Wright had framed his statement in terms of "God striking back at the United States for a sinful foreign policy"
(not that they wouldn't have tried, anyway)

I haven't read all the comments, so maybe someone has suggested this already, but has anyone considered taking a camcorder of some sort and recording some of the white fringe evangelicals denouncing the U.S.? It might help to build a YouTube style video compilation as a counter point to the Wright smear. Every little bit helps, and the media seems to swoon for YouTube videos that save them the trouble of actually writing a story or doing any production.
John Hussein Clavis @ 5:
Well, there's always PassportGate to distract the media from WrightGate... :p
John Hussein Clavis @ 75:
Passport Gate who cares, unless there is something in there thats makes Obama Nervous ?
Let's remember the Huckster - In spite of his views, which I disagree with, he showed himself to be a mensch:
Huckabee Defends Rev. Jeremiah Wright
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/19/huckabee-defends-rev-jer_n_9234...
I find it rather funny how the supporters of Senator Obama are crying "foul" and "hypocrites" in regards to the MSM, Reverend Wright and conservative preachers. The Senator Obama supporters are just as hypocritical when it comes to people who voice reason and truth regarding race.
Its too bad they don't see it. We would be a much better place if they did.
Amy @ 1:
The first time that I heard that comment was from Idaho's Rep Sali.
Wright is no more outrageous than Falwell or Roberts for example , besides what he said was ninety percent true and applicable , alot of people just can't stand the truth . Personally I don't give a damn about this story , Rev Wright and what he some times said is not a reflection of Obama , his character or or the man he is ...
geneHUSSEIN214 @ 67:
John Kooms @ 80:
No, but Obama's lies about whether or not he heard Wright's spew in church is a reflection of him. On Friday Obama says he wasn't in church when any of this occurred; during his underwhelming cover my ass speech on Tuesday, he was in church when it occurred. Today he said his grandmother was just a typical white woman.
For all you truly dense people, this isn't about Wright's rantings; it goes to Obama's poor judgment. And that is what is making people question whether or not he is up to being president.
PssttCmere @ 82:
All you've managed to prove is that you have extremely low reading comprehension.
I have a wonderful fridge magnet I got from Betty Bowers website. It says, "The real Jesus forgives your Jesus for being a greedy Republican warmonger". It's also available in T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.
I'm still waiting to see the MSM mention the nutty things white Rethug preachers say. I even e-mailed Hannity but, of course, got no reply.
exactly... how much more UNAMERICAN can you get than falwell (rest in pieces) saying america DESERVED 9/11??? double standard, considering all the talk about obama's pastor..
PssttCmere @ 82:
Obama going to a church that you personally disagree with shows his "poor judgment"? Wow, what a narcissist you are.
When will the IQ of humans grow above the fairytail bullshit of "The all knowing, all seeing, all powerfull, magical being running the cosmos". The only god I see is the one that the churchs beg for,lie for, sell splinters from the ark for, we ask in the dollars name, amen. If god was a real path worth following they would not have to spin ,lie and make up stories to keep people in their ranks. They would not have to pick and choose which parts of the bible need to be followed to the letter and which parts "didn't really mean it". In world history their has been 19 some odd "sons of god". All born of virgin birth, all hung on cross, all had 12 followers, all rose from dead all betrayed by one person, all healed blind and brought people back from the dead! Come on fellow humans, bring your head out of that dark place it is in now into the light, perhaps it is lack of air that prevents clear thinking. Face it, religion has killed more people than smallpox! Religion is no more than a few willing to lie ,cheat and kill to get the rest to believe that they know the "real secrets" of life. Religion has hampered the progress of mankind, by hiding and rewriting information and history! Don't believe in our god? Then you will burn forever in hell. But don't worry, god is a loving god who loves you. Think that religion is real or need a good belly laugh tune your tv to the CBN (pat robersons little gold mine of creepy dumbshits) I laughed so hard tears of blood started to roll down my cheeks.
