I defy you to get through this program without crying. Even Heather's great mashup of the show had tears streaming down my face. On this week's Bill Moyers Journal, Moyers spoke with Phil Donohue and Ellen Spiro about their new documentary feature Body of War, focusing on paralyzed Iraq vet Tomas Young.
DONAHUE: My inspiration for this film was the naked child running from the napalm. Remember that Vietnam picture? I mean, terrified, this little girl is totally naked. You can see the black smoke in the back. That picture won a Pulitzer Prize. See the pain. Don't sanitize the war.
If you're gonna send young men and women to fight for this nation, tell the truth. That's one of the biggest reasons for the First Amendment. And we haven't been. And so I thought I will tell the story, the real story of the harm in harm's way.
You definitely see the pain and the truth while watching Tomas and his family cope with his injuries and try to find a way to give Tomas as much dignity and life as he can. I cannot speak highly enough of this little microcosm of tangible reality for a war made purposefully abstract so that we remain apathetic to it. You can watch the full episode at PBS.com and order the soundtrack, featuring music by Eddie Vedder here.

Good to see Donahue back in the game.
no tears for me, just a firmer resolve to end the war.
tomas' brother is on active duty.
Truly tragic.
My eyes welled up. I will watch the rest of it now.
Bush: Afghaninstan war is ROMANTIC
http://sabbah.biz/ mt/ archives/ 2008/ 03/ 15/ bush-afghaninstan-war-is-romantic/
President Bush spoke of his dream to work on the frontline in Afghanistan during a video conference with US military and civilian personnel in the war-torn country. “I must say, I’m a little envious,” Bush said. “If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. “It must be exciting for you … in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You’re really making history, and thanks,” President Bush said.
Enough said.
I feel so sad and angry for that young man. God Damn this Administration.
I saw this episode of Moyers' Journal. Touching stuff. Nice to see an honest and truthful portrait of Busholini's folly and what it has done to thousands upon thousands of families. Too bad the majority of the sheeple won't even hear about the movie "Body of War".
This is what happens when chickenhawks rule the roost.
And now Commander Bunnypants -- the drunken AWOL frat boy -- has killed his 4,000th U.S. soldier.
Oh, to see him swinging from a lamppost ...
Thank you. It's the best reminder of why we fight for the soul of this country. John McCain is simply not acceptable.
Crap, I got something in my eyes.
The sad thing is McCain is the one seen as "tough". There is such a disconnect in this country. I just am befuddled that so many people want to go down the same road again and again. What is the definiton of insanity?
CoIntelPro against the WAR of LIES @ 2:
I am in agreement with you 100%. I am going to make it a personal mission to see this film. This needs to be shown everywhere to give everyone a hard hitting slap in the face. The thing that pisses me off the most is watching Bush at that dinner giving his "were are the WMD" joke and then watching that soldier sitting there in a wheelchair watching the same thing. I can only imagine what was going though his mind at the time but I bet it wasn't pretty.

Letter calls official Spitzer story into question / GOP operative wrote investigators in November (ROGER STONE - In the 1970s, he was on the payroll of Richard Nixon's now-infamous Committee to Reelect the President. In the 1980s, he helped George Bush Sr. trounce Michael Dukakis by floating a racially charged ad about the Democratic governor's role in furloughing a black inmate. And in 2000, he organized the so-called "Brooks Brothers" riot, forcing the shutdown of a recount in Miami-Dade County, Florida, that may have turned the election to George W. Bush.)
"Republican political operative Roger Stone, Eliot Spitzer's longtime antagonist, predicted his political demise more than three months in advance," Novak wrote. "Spitzer's entrapment by federal authorities investigating a prostitution ring raised speculation that Stone, with a 40-year record as a political hit man, somehow was behind it."

Chimpy, the deserter, who thinks that war is romantic.
There is a special place in hell for such as he.
Phil Donahue's recollection of that little Vietnamese girl running down a street covered with napalm was also one of the pivotal scenes in the heart wrenching 1974 film Hearts and Minds, which won the Oscar for best documentary, much to the consternation of war hawks such as Bob Hope, John Wayne, and Frank Sinatra. Donahue is certainly right about how this occupation is covered, since most news stations throughout the country devote less than five minutes to the casualties that are taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan. More soldiers will continue to fill the beds of Walter Reed and VA hospitals across this country as long as the United States continues to unnecessarily place its soldiers in harm's way. The only way to prevent this from happening is to bring them home-alive and in one piece-now.
I began my day seeing clips of this on c-span. I believe the show is called Afterwords and it's hosted by Brian Lamb. He had Phil as his guest and they were showing clips and discussing the making of the movie. I was crying before I was fully awake. And this is just one story of one soldier, I wonder how many more there are out there that may be even sadder and even worse. God, what a awful criminal shame.
Could cheney watch this show and then just say "So?". Sadly, I imagine he could.
That 'naked child' running from the napalm lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
...what is it going to take for Americans to rise up against their so-called government?
This Canadian weeps for your country.
Will we see Phil on Meet the Press talking about this film? Will Tim and Chris Matthews and all the rest invite him on their shows? I wish they would, but I doubt they will.
To make a bad story worse, Ollie North on Faux News said the photo was used for "anti-American propaganda."
FATSinTHEfire @ 15:
Damnit, misplaced my comment.
And there’s a similar piece in Harper’s. Stone is a stone-cold scumbag, rat bastard, political hitman.
This post brings brings up an off topic piece I saw last night on CNN with Rick Sanchez when the 4000 th death was reported.
C&L, you gotta get this video up there for two reasons, one to show the absurdity of the over weight lady winger slamming Ware and Ware's clear and concise summary of where we actually are at in the serge.
Sanchez is a buffoon but Ware cut right to the chase and laid out all the facts as to whats happening on the ground. This guy's been in the dirt, muck, and heat since this wars started with little break if any at all.
Then...this right wing talk show radio host had the utter gall to say Ware is wrong because she has been there "twice" and everything is going great. She actually used the "what about Anbar" line which Ware tore to shreds. How Ware held it together with telling this woman to foulke off was beyond me. It was the most disrespectful spin and utter vile I've ever seen a wing nut spew to a person who's seen the living hell going on daily.
I don't know if anyone caught it but they had a double screen shot and she was actually smirking at Ware when he was describing conditions on the ground. It was stunning.
Hannah Hussein @ 16:
And there's another sad fact.
That the miserable, evil bastards who caused all this misery, death and horror will not suffer so much as a night of missed sleep while the world burns and entire villages die and injured soldiers are discarded like yesterday's newspaper.
That all we can do is hope that maybe in some far distant future, in a made up religious "hell" they will finally be given their just desserts. Because real justice is dead and it's sickening to realize they'll all just walk away from it wealthier and self satisfied.
Bush and Cheney are war criminals, plain and simple.
and they're going to get away with it from what it seems.
America used to be great, now we're a sad old joke of a democracy.
impeach, then prosecute - THAT IS THE ONLY SOLUTION.
The following quote should be used to describe the Republican party, the right wingers that support them, and especially those at that dinner party in the film.
War spares not the brave but the cowardly - Anacreon
While such stories will motivate some to end this war, I already can imagine the suffering. That's why I protested against the war BEFORE the Bush regime launched it.
What will really end it is a taxpayer revolt. That's right: greed. The one thing republicons hate to do is pay taxes, and right now 12 billion of our tax dollars are going up in flames every month. And by the way, those dollars, not spent on education or health care or infrastructure here do translate in an indirect way to death and suffering of civilian Americans. (For instance, when that bridge that has been neglected collapses and kills motorists.)
So my bumpersticker reads:
PAY YOU TAXES
ENDLESS WAR AIN"T CHEAP
Sadly, greed and self insterest will end this war a lot faster than sympathy for our troops, who are ignored by the media anyway.

I still wonder how Bush had the chutzpah to make that cute little film where he's "looking for WMD" in the Oval Office for a few cheap laughs.
Oh yeah, he doesn't give a fuck.
Someone should slam the butts of Bush and his prowar cronies including "Darth" into chairs, tie them down, tape their eyes open, and push TV sets in front of their faces so they couldn't look away and force them to watch what Donohue has created. And then bring into the room the parents, and loved ones, including the now fatherless or motherless children and let them have at these low-life scum who think dying in Iraq or Afganistan is "romantic." Pelosi should be made to sit through it as well. Then let's see if she still doesn't want to impeach this bunch.
I made a point of watching Body of War this weekend. The scene that most struck was that of Tomas in his weelchair in a ward, watching Bush pontificate on TV, and the fact that it was years ago even though he says the same things today.
Also, the extraordinary injury of not being able to naturally regulate his body temperature! For all his injuriies that seems an extraoridnarily debilitating one.
AND the excahnge between Tomas and the Vietnam vet, regarding rehabilitation. The Viet vet spen a year in hospital and 6 mopnths out-patient, Tomas, with more sever problems was given the boot in about three months!
How often do we see the wounded on the networks? When there's some feel good spin at hand, like advances in prosthetics, or Bush or some other minion 'sharing their pain'. Its nauseating.
Is it possible that PBS has actually escaped the clutches of the Republican media machine? Hallelujah. How many markets did this film make it to--that's a good question.

Arrrrrgggghhhh.........The only people who think war is "romantic" are the people who haven't smelled a burnt corpse, who haven't watched the life blood spurting out of multiple arterial wounds as an 18 yr old dies in agony, who haven't watched the explosion as their buddy takes a round to the head and they get covered with bits of grey matter and skull fragments as the blood gushes out of their friends carotid arteries. Don't even get me started on the horror of seeing the maimed infants, children, old men and women, you know the "collateral damage" aspect of the "romantic" war.

Take a look at the MSM web-pages and see what their lead story headline is. Mostly I found the sex scandal involving the Mayor of Detroit as their lead story (usually with a large picture of him). Only MSNBC had the 4000 deaths of soldiers from the Iraqi War as the lead story from what I previewed so far. I think it would be useful to save screenshots of those web-pages for future reference to illustrate who actually supports the troops and who doesn't.
L.A. Confidential @ 37:
That says it all! At least the MSM is talking about it this morning.
Watched Moyers interview Donahue and forget the filmmaker's name. Tomas is very brave. I hope his brother comes back from his 3rd tour of duty in one piece.
Couldn't believe the section of the Moyers interview, in which a Vietnam vet "gimp," as he called himself, talks to Tomas and they compare notes about the veteran's healthcare they've received. The Vietnam vet was in the hospital for a year with similar injuries, and had about 9 months of physical therapy. Tomas's hospital stay was very short, and he's received almost no physical therapy or help.
I cannot speak highly enough of this little microcosm of tangible reality for a war made purposefully abstract so that we remain apathetic to it.
Yes. Very powerful film. However, the war is not an abstraction: it's completely real, and was researched and predicted before it happened.
It's a resource war. Just like WW2, and WW1, and as we slide down the back side of petroleum production, expect more of them from both Republican and Democratic administrations until Americans give up on driving gas guzzling tanks and leave the suburbs to rot and collapse back into the precious farmlands they once were.
Don't like it? Then change the way you live. It's not a political problem : it's a social problem.
Andy @ 24:
I saw that too last night. She was smirking and she just looked...plain evil. Made me wonder how people can spin such a tragedy and still be human.
Rick Sanchez usually acts kind of goofy but I have to say I was amazed he stopped Ware to ask him about the Iraqi death toll, something hardly ever addressed by the msm.
Leslie @ 51:
That's known as "supporting the troops" these days in rethuglican circles.
MSNBC cancelled Phil Donahue's show because he was too liberal and against the Iraq war. They owe him a damn big apology. This video makes me so freaking angry. This is one story just begging for one of Olbermann's Special Comments.
Rawstory.com has a banner headline up: 97% of the 4,000 US casualties in Iraq came after "Mission Accomplished"
Bet no one in the media mentions it.
I was stunned (well not really) to see in the clips of "Body of War" all of the Dem members of Congress, INCLUDING HILLARY, spouting the WH's bullshit talking points verbatim. More like disgusted, not stunned.

Everytime the price of gas goes up, the President announce that were winning in the war. It is the only factual indication of progress of any measurement that we have on the war. The huge surge we had in Iraq made the gas price jump real big. An interesting correlation, and yet I have not graph it, but I think most would agree. I think we are here to bring freedom to the oil of Iraq.
It piss me off seeing the President(appointed dictator)laugh it off on WMD search. The only way that privileged woman can call herself a desperate housewife if she spend a night in poison infested trailer in New Orlean until her husband decide to house them and get them back on their feet. Notice that he bailed out Stearn 10 times the amount and on a Sunday over the Katrina victim.

I suppose our troops volunteered to be killed.
Donahue's reminder about the MSM's cooperation with the Bushists about not taking photos of flag-draped caskets says it all. The corporate media refuses to its job again.
In high school I had to read the book Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It's a book about a young man who goes off to fight in WWI and comes back minus all limbs and is unable to speak or see. It was sufficiently distressing that I didn't get too far through it. The author argued for suppressing his own book during WWII since he was in favor of that war.
It's an unfortunate result of World War II—the good war— that we have this idealized view of warfare. The large number of movies produced in the 40s and 50s helped paint this sanitized picture (e.g., the fatally shot soldier puts his hand to his chest and quietly falls to the ground). As time passes we have a smaller and smaller percentage of the population that has seen real warfare and can provide first-hand witness to its horror.

Part 2 tomorrow night.
Dick Cheney comments - "So?"
That Phil Donahue is not on a DAILY television PROGRAM on a MAJOR NETWORK, is a travesty. Thomas' story and 30,000+ more like his should be required viewing for every single American. And, sadly, yes--the cheneys out there WOULD still say "so?" I spent 6 weeks at Walter Reed in early 2004, and follow-up time in VA hospitals--supporting my daughter who was her husband's primary caretaker for 2 years in military and VA Brain Injury facilities. I saw hundreds of broken bodies, minds, and psyches; I heard the nightmare screams of the some of the 30,000 we never hear about; I wondered what these shattered people with empty eyes had been like before bush and cheney sent them to their tortured destinies. I suctioned saliva, emptied pans, massaged dead limbs, held lifeless hands, wiped a brow, a mouth, a nose. I saw the terrified faces of spouses, parents, children, wondering what became of the one they so loved, and who this person in front of them now was and would be. The cost of this war has been and will continue to be incalculable; lives have been destroyed in a multitude of different ways, and the pain is unending.
Since the beginning of this war - now occupation -- I was amazed and angered that the pictures of war that I saw while growing up in the Vietnam era were not allowed on the TV. Between the horrible pictures of that war and the draft, the whole country was involved in bringing that war to an end.
I am deeply disturbed that the same sentiment - namely the will of the American public -- that ended to the end of out involvement in Vietnam only rates a "SO?" from our sociopathic Slim Shady (our Vice-President Cheney).
And yet, even without the pictures of war/occupation, America still has turned against participation in this war. And yet, this administration is persisting in trying to gin up evidence of yet another potential war against Iran. Our Senators and Congress-people persist in not ending this war. I am so frustrated and angry that this thing cannot end and even more frustrated that the MSM has abrogated their authority to inform. Why isn't the MSM producing documentaries like this?
Please, Please, Please keep producing more of these types of messages... it is the only way to put an end to the wrongness of this war.

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

That didn't make me cry.
It made me angry as hell.
An anger born of frusteration that we can't do anything about it.
Democracy is dead.
Dumb question--if we had currently the medical technology that was available during the Viet Nam war, how many more soldiers would be dead instead of wounded?
Bushed! @ 82:
Actually, I was wondering the same thing. The conservatives will argue that the numbers don't matter, even though 3000 meant so much on 9-11, and their attempted linkage of the issues. They'll say more people are killed every year on the highway.
But if this is the life the "survivors" have to go through, complete with worries about government cut-backs on their healthcare and a Kafkaesque system to apply for benefits, I would say they're the walking-dead.
The list of pills Thomas has to take is a definition of the walking dead. He is taking every pill just to stay numb.
ysbaddaden @ 83:
Toward the end, I remember Ellen Spiro repeating something she heard from an employee at a VA facility---"There's a saying around here that there's nothing that we won't do for our veterans, and that's what they get---nothing."
Appalling.
If you guys and gals at C&L post 1 thing about a bunch of rich college boys playing a kids game, giving it any kind of importance whatsoever, then you lose a little respect in this veteran's eyes.
ysbaddaden @ 81:
Agreed. This immoral attack on the helpless(war) keeps me angry. We(this government) have hurt or destroyed so many innocent people.
"You liberals ..."
Yes, and mighty proud to be so.
So screw off, reich-wing conservative troll.
Donahue showed the film at the TakeBackAmerica conference last week at the Shoreham. This movie will rock your world, no matter how you feel about the war.
1) You will NEVER look at someone in a wheelchair the same way again.
2) You will want whatever funding can be found for the Vets and the VA, and then some more money, and then some more.
3) You will want to go to the next National Press Club gathering and hurt many members of the press for laughing at the Boy King's 'Nope, no WMDs over there' jokes.
Sure, I know you were disgusted when it happened, but in the context of this movie, counting down the Senate votes, with the Senate parrots recalling the Idiot King's UN speech verbatim, you'll start yelling at the screen when the laughter starts...
Donahue is back on the board, BIG-TIME, baby!
The sight of Thomas' mom tears me apart, wrenches my heart in two.
I grieve with her. How can one believe in god if this is what he has wrought? How many other vets, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, kids have to suffer because of this madness?
Wanna end the war? Then learn from the past and get with it for crying out loud.
America has to chastizing the troops. Sounds unpatriotic I know but put away the "kid gloves" and do what they did for the Vietnam War. Here's how;
First, it must be made very clear, America (as a nation) and the coalition countries were duped into this war and for that, the world in eternally grateful for the bravery, unselfishness and patriotism the troops exibited during this conflict.
But now the reports give proof, Iraq should not have been invaded and all that has happened is turn this country into chaos.
So...now it's time to say NO MORE and demand to come home. To continue and add to any more killing is morally unjustified. To stay is without any further support from the nation.
Again, under the claims made by this administration, we honor your comittment but now, with the real proof...you must come home..............as victors. Victors of peace.

We got into this war because Congress made the mistake of trusting our president and trusting that he wouldn't lie us into a war. Senator Byrd smelled a rat in Bush and spoke out. There is absolutely no doubt that Bush will be remembered as the worst, most inept, most secretative and most corrupt president in US history. I only wish that our next president will ask the DOJ to pursue criminal charges against Bush and Cheney in 2009. It's time to make things right again in America and around the world.
[site monitor, could you find it in your heart to fix my posts, that they may make sense?]
Don't forget to watch Bush's War on PBS this week, and you who like PBS might want to know Bush is out to ax the budget, with some concurrence from the NYT. We all have Cable, right?

Oh, yeah...I've always wanted stock in a company that does business
with terrorists and has a subsidiary (KBR) that is responsible for the
electrocution deaths of dozens of soldiers and is also responsible for
poisoning the food and water they give the troops. And it's because
of big contractors like Halliburton that we are in Iraq in the first place
and Thomas Young is in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. If you
are the type of person that can make money off that misery and
still live with yourself then I hope you get buttfucked by Cheney in
hell for all eternity.
Being a war profiteer makes you the lowest form of scum on earth!
Before I watch, some guy, named "Idahodad", over at YouTube, told me not to fall for the lefty propaganda and to cheer up and get a HOBBY. I was objecting to the video of John McCain telling me/us to get a life for his ""cute"" bomb bomb bomb Iran ""gag"". Who said this war has been sanitized? Ceratinly NOT IN IDAHO. (Go Pro-Life, you f--kin' douchbag.)
PS (clarification) *lefty ideological propaganda
I said (not sic) I didn't feel being aganist killing and torture required propaganda; merely a conscience.
I dare any of you to make it through the clip of the Gold Star families clamoring just to touch Tomas' face and squeeze his hand - if you can watch those faces and not cry you are without a soul
My fantasy is twofold:
First, to see Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, and every other miscreant coward and war criminal incarcerated for life (no possible parole) and forced to read news clips or written histories, or view mini-documentaries about each and every person killed in Iraq--EVERY person, not just our troops--and then required to write sincere and well-worded apologies to each person's surviving family. For life... No respite...
Second, to see everyone who posts herein and on DU (and other venues) become more active in the anti-war, impeachment movement instead of sitting comfortably in their homes and posting online. It's past time for radical action, and this old woman (for one) is doing everything possible to oust this criminal regime.
THANK you Phil and crew for a call to action.. thank you for drawing attention to the need for the Press to represent honest investigative reporting.... Bush worries about his legacy ...
His legacy will be "Ok, you've covered your ass, you can go home now." & "Nope, no weapons of mass destruction there ..."
He will be compared, unfavorably, to Nero - He will be found more corrupt & degenerate than the Roman who "fiddled" while Rome burned.
History's summary will be that Bush "cleared brush" while this country disintegrated.
