President Bush gave warning yesterday that Iraq’s “fragile situation” required the US to maintain a strong military presence there, even as he defended the withdrawal of British troops from Basra, the scene of heavy fighting in recent days.
In an interview with The Times, he backed the Iraqi Government’s decision to “respond forcefully” to the spiralling violence by “criminal elements” and Shia extremists in Basra. “It was a very positive moment in the development of a sovereign nation that is willing to take on elements that believe they are beyond the law,” the President said.

Someone not already aware of how our media has become a tool of the Bush administration might have been shocked at how Frontline could have missed one of President George W. Bush’s most telling “signing statements.” Underneath the recent Defense Authorization Act, he wrote that he did not feel bound by the law’s explicit prohibition against using the funding:
“(1) To establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq,” or
“(2) To exercise United States control of the oil resources of Iraq.”

Also, at some point you have to decide what to include and what not to; I gathered the story for 'Bush's War' doesn't include an investigation of Halliburton/KBR, for example, or the 'moral clarity' of waterboarding.

i don't want to defend bush by any stretch of the imagination, but if the iraqis manage to get Sadr's militias under their thumb, with malaki running the show, it could be a very good sign that the iraqi gov't has some stones.
Of course, if they fail, it means that the iraqis will continue to suffer with a weak gov't and anarchy.
It's not a good sign that Malaki extended the deadline to 10 days for the militias to give up.

But the reality is that it is a battle between Shite militias -- separatists and nationalists -- with one militia garbed in Iraqi army uniforms and supported by U.S. airpower, and the other in civilian clothes.
...the interests of the Bush administration and its allies are aligned with Maliki and his coalition. Sadr called for nationwide civil disobedience that would have allowed his followers to flex some political muscle in a nonviolent way. The Maliki regime responded by saying that individuals joining the nationwide strike would be punished and that those organizing it are in violation of the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Act issued in 2005. The much-touted troop "surge" had little to do with the drop in violence in recent months -- it didn't even correlate with the lull chronologically and was certainly a minor causal factor at best. A number of factors led to the reduced violence, but Sadr's cease-fire had the greatest impact. Nonetheless, the Maliki regime, backed by the United States, continued a campaign of harassment and intimidation against Sadr's followers, denied them space to peacefully resist the occupation and forced his hand.

The 4000 fatality figure makes this war sound like it's not that big a deal (ww2 had 20 million killed). The larger view is to look at the casualties, which are closer to 30,000. Many of those injuries are incredibly serious, and represent soldiers who would have died in previous conflicts.

So if the outbreak of violence in Basra is a sign that the surge is working how does this jive with the assertion that the decrease in violence of the past months meant that the surge was working?
These assholes can't have it both ways.
They let the Mahdi army rule Basra and said the lack of violence from allowing Sadr to rule was due to the success of the surge. Now that the truce has ended they're saying its because of the success of the surge that they're able to take out the bad guys.

Bush watches too many action movies like Harrison Ford's "Air Force One" and Kurt Russell's "Executive Decision" and translates them into real life trying to make a crossover from movie fiction to reality. They don't go hand in hand, and the only thing that has crossed over ficticiously was how he claims "we're making progress in Iraq" and "al-Qaida's on the run" - still, the same arguments said over and over again with no real results or substance for an end. It's all about going to war just to have a war in sending 18-24 year old kids to die in that political vacuum while profiteering from it by Bush and his corporate cronies.
