On his new show, Verdict, Dan Abrams celebrates the court reversal on hearing Don Siegelman's appeal and his subsequent release from prison in Alabama on Friday.
Showing that he is undaunted by his time in prison, Siegelman apparently spoke to Dan Abrams by cell phone on his drive home and fingered Karl Rove as the man behind this political hit job. This appeal should be something to watch to see if Bush's Brain actually gets held accountable.
C&L Contributer Heather has put a longer version of Abrams' segment on Siegelman, with Rep. Artur Davis and journalist Scott Horton of Harper's up on YouTube.
Legal Schnauzer (h/t Scarce) brings up a point that should convince you of the power of the larger blogging community and grassroots efforts to effect change:
Siegelman's release is a testament to the power of alternative media. Without the work of blogger/journalists like Scott Horton of Harper's, Glynn Wilson of Locust Fork News, and Larisa Alexandrovna of at-Largely/Raw Story/Huffington Post/Hustler, Siegelman would have little hope of being released any time soon. Without the work of Pam Miles and her e-mail listees, Siegelman would have remained in prison for the foreseeable future. It's impossible to overstate the impact of CBS and its 60 Minutes story on the Siegelman case. But that "old media" story would not have happened without the work of folks working in the "new media."

Rove needs to be completely investigated on this before Congress under oath and if found guilty needs to be cuffed and imprisoned. I REALLY want to see him do the perp walk...
what's going on this site? two clicks to retrieve the comments section and my
computer is hung up. never had this happen
rove needs more than to be investigated, but while bush is in office
we will run the risk of his intentional intervention and dissolve rove
of any allegations or accusations. look for rove to suddenly be
sent out of the country by bush to a country that won't send him back.
dadams @ 3:
Extraordinary rendition suddenly becomes to good to be true.
I wonder if CBS is going to be sued for "Not Supporting the Troops"
EliteLemming @ 4:
Hey Karl, have you ever been to a Turkish Prison?
dadams @ 2:
Bummer. No problems for me.
Stay away from Faux--you never know what you'll catch oner there...
gemHusseinpei @ 6:
Probably not, but you know he's seen LOTS of grown men naked...
fastfeat @ 8:
Render him to DELIVERANCE country. Sooooo-eeeee!
The investigation needs to begin now. it needs to take nine months or so to gather evidence, and the minute Bush is out of office Rove needs to be slapped in irons and sent to rot in cell for a very long time.
How do you think the repugs will feel about politicizing the DoJ if we make Edwards AG and Siegelman Deputy OR asst. AG(what ever the correct title is).
Bush$Co needs to be thoroughly investigated. My faith in the this country's Government will not restored until Cheney, Bush, Rover. VonRumsfeldt and Condalizzard, just to name a few are all made to pay for every single crime they have committed against this country and it's citizens.
Just a bit of nit-picking. Siegelman was in prison in Louisiana, not Alabama. The feds tried to keep him as isolated as possible and I'm happy that eventually this ploy failed. Keep reading Scott Horton at Harpers.org for any and all updates, and I would urge all readers to subscribe to Harpers magazine! I find it both informative and entertaining!
This is a nightmare that just doesn't end. Don't hold your breath with Siegelman. Everyone has been getting off scot-free, even the soldier held on charges at Haditha. It's a free for all, the dems are in cahoots, certainly the Clintons,
and it'll only get worse if that is imaginable. Too much damage has been done. To prevent accountability vote for Hillary or McCain. Obama hasn't been tainted/bribed
and that's why he is so vulnerable, He better wear bullet-proof vest and have his own private guards, NOT those of the governmnt. Look what happened to Robert Kennedy to mention just one of many.
Thank God this man is out of Prison!!! It is so hard to see hope in this day and age and this is one of those rare times. Thanks for posting. Let's keep the heat on these guys and use our intelligence to create a better Planet.

fastfeat @ 7:
i never give fakenews any hits, have them blocked on my tv.
Dirty Don is still a crook. Rove had nothing to do with it, tried and convicted, guilty as charged.
Jack Moss @ 17:
Wow, what a fact filled informative read. Says nothing about the fact that its all based on hearsay and contradictory testimonials of the witnesses.
Turdblossom needs to be wiped off and flushed. He denied ever having worked with the Republican operative who claims she was told by him to spy on Siegelman. She challenged him to say that under oath since, as we all know, it seems to be OK for these politicians to lie when they are not under oath. Only under oath can they be held accountable and halled off to jail for their treachery. I guarantee you that he will not deny anything under oath in the way he denied it on T.V. but instead he will use the "I do not recall" line or something similar. The investigators must interview all those dirty Republicans involved and then, once on record, bring in the star evidence. They must keep the star evidence under raps until the Republicans have testified so their testimony cannot be taylored to avoid potential perjury charges. This way they will have to sweat it out while they are lying on the stand or, perhaps, decide to tell the truth. This is all tricky stuff and Rove is incredibly good at it. He probably has a fool proof system of this kind of influence which keeps him from ever getting caught. Without physical evidence or multiple witnesses all I have seen so far is hearsay. I seriously doubt any investigation of this matter or any other will ever incriminate him and send him to jail . Rove is a master at his art of dirty politics. He lives it. He breathes it. Lee Atwater was his mentor. Rove is a traitor to many Americans both alive and dead but he will likely never be frog marched anywhere except the Pits of Hell after he dies (we can only hope). The Alabama Republicans involved in this thing, on the other hand, could be heading up the river or at least pay a true penalty in terms of their careers. Rove is booked on speaking tours at $20,000 a pop and has his paycheck from Fox News Channel and whatever else his Republican breatheren feel like supporting him with. He has been their warrior and they will take care of him. You might hate them but you have to admit that the Republicans do a commendable job of taking care of their own (its the rest of us they screw).
Democrats need to enforce the subpoenas they issue and get these crooks under oath to figure out the truth.
I never watch Fox so I don't know, so I was just curious if Fox has even mentioned the Siegelman case. I mean since Karl works for them now.
Abbybwood @ 1:
We're not going to get a full investigation by the Justice Department until GWB is out of office and we have a new Attorney-General.
dadams @ 2:
I have the same problem everytime there is a Relasso clip on the page anywhere.
Frybread @ 22:
I want to add that if Rove is somehow convicted before January, 2009, then GWB will pardon him. So we need to have the investigation started soon but not to have any charged brought forth until after next January.
The State are entirely in Sinc, The Feds either threaten to withhold monies or armtwist in other fasions as reported by UN. Do a little invesstigating and you find that the CPS takes children from families and uses them for experiments. This country needs to be purged of these satanist.
I hope they finally bust the very feminine Rove for all his covered up crimes.
Jack Moss @ 17:
You're using hearsay and an indictment to claim Siegelman is guilty!? An indictment is an allegation, not a conviction. It even says at the bottom of the indictment, "innocent until proven guilty."
seems to me, that karl rove is serving some very powerful paymasters, considering all of the underhanded, scummy things he's been engaged in and never been held accountable.
Rove for Jail 2008!
Jack Moss @ 17:
Oh, by the way Jack, Rove's fingerprints ARE all over this. Watch the MSNBC Dan Abrams video above: 52 former state attorney generals, democratic and republican, wrote a letter demanding an investigation of the Siegelman case because there were too many irregularities, indicating Siegelman was probably framed in a crooked trial.
dadams, ConcernedCanuck: That could be the culprit, though I've had problems before the RedLassos. It's almost always tied to Adobe Flash. All the YouTube screen/links on C&L (as well as the RedLassos) use Flash, and lots of the screens on a page can bog down a computer. Though considering how tested YouTube is, it shouldn't be outright shoddy. More likely, it's the banner ads, which are undoubtedly slapped together in 3 minutes by some idiot. At some point in history, people were no longer content to use animated .GIFs for even their simple ads, but insisted on using Flash -- and all the CPU and memory drain that comes with it. Some of these ads must have memory leaks... I often have multiple browser windows open, and will suddenly notice that my computer is crawling. iexplore.exe in Task Manager will be taking up tons of memory and/or CPU, even though I'm not doing anything obviously intensive with the browser. When I close the C&L windows, whoosh! Everything returns to normal.
The crawling can happen when I haven't looked at the C&L pages for awhile, which is why I suspect gradual memory leaks as opposed to an upfront catastrophe.
I hate Adobe Flash. It's a blight on the Internet, especially when misused (i.e. often).
If I were running this site, I'd tell everybody submitting Flash ads to go to hell. Then I'd kill them to expedite their trip. As I type this message, all the ads in the righthand margin are text-based, which brings me great relief. :D But it probably won't last. :[
Dont you worry - Mr Rove will find a way not to be accountable for this - just like all the other things ......
Robert @ 32:
Ja! He was just following orders!
I have been wondering why there are so few comments at places like redstate(which always sounded communist to me), and at #17 I have the answer. With nothing left to actually cheer for, they have been reduced to trolling at progressive sights.
I hope they get Rove in court and that they time it so Bush is out of office when he is sentenced. No pardon for you crook!!
Dan Abrams: Siegelman Leaves Prison; Points To Rove
Which finger did he use?
Sooner or later every slimey , lowdown crime that rove has been involved in will catch up with him. History is full of crooks who thought they were above the law and were to slick to be caught. We should start a list of all the people he has injured in his life, it will be a long one. Rove has "creepy little pervert " written all over him and has lived his life by that creed. The hard part will be keeping the handcuffs on his slippery girly like hands. I hope we get to pick his cellmate!
Assassin @ 31:
I installed NoScript (I use Firefox) a couple of weeks ago at the suggestion of someone here (sorry, I forgot to thank whoever it was) to handle RedLasso clips. Don't know if it will help with this issue (I'm a computer moron, sorry...), but NoScript has worked well in speeding up things quite a bit.
Good luck.
Abbybwood @ 1:
if found guilty ?
h/t to C&L and all those who kept the pressure on and this story alive and in the light of day. Although it is far from over, keep this alive and hammer, hammer, hammer. Progress takes time.
Hang Rove.
But Rove, draft dodger exrtaordinaire, really feels for the families of dead soldiers :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otQyfSYAnTI
Yeah, hang him.
CEO,citizens,eyes,open @ 37:
Jeff Gannon!!!!!!
mystic @ 14:
That's quite a little nightmare you have dancing around in your head especially concerning the Clintons. Way too many of you Obama supporters are fabricating the evils of the Clintons and spinning yarns about the perfection of your affection for Obama, the Sainted.
And Rove deserves any and all criminal charges that can be brought against him and I suspect that would be many. May he find his fat sleazy ass in prison for the rest of his pathetic life. This man has done so much harm to our country, our judicial system and our Constitution by being the brains and the puppet master for Bush.
Assassin @ 31:
Try Firefox...much cleaner browser and far less bloated than IE
turd is nothing but chimpy's henchman.
turd + Plame
turd + Attorney Generals
turd + Siegleman
trud + chimpy = love
Now can they bury this turd.
I Shall be Released
bob@43, For ol carl that would be marrying up.
I live in Alabama, and I was one of the citizens who was affected when WHNT blacked out the Siegelman story on 60 Minutes.
I have sent emails to everyone I could think of, including WHNT, and encouraged my friends to do the same. I also confronted a member of my local congressional office when I saw them out and about in town. I was still writing letters to protest this travesty up until this week.
My personal email campaign was encouraged by the blogs; Crooks & Liars, AmericaBlog and HuffingtonPost. I also think that Dan Abrams stood head and shoulders above the rest of the lazy and corrupt main stream media in the Siegelman cause. WHAT HAS BECOME OF OUR 'MEDIA'??? You should all be embarrassed and ashamed!!
Yes, 60 Minutes aired the original story, but only after they were prodded, AGAIN, by citizen protest (they cancelled the story at least once). 60 Minutes was unbelievably cowardly regarding this story and this case.
While I credit all these media folks, I also think that every citizen who wrote letters and would not give up, deserve equal credit. Without active and angry citizens to read the blogs and write the letters, Siegelman would probably still be in the basement of that Louisiana prison.
A MESSAGE TO Gov. Siegelman; PLEASE get a decent lawyer!! Alan Dershowitz comes to mind! I pray that Rove, Riley and every other person who played a part in this travesty of justice/political persecution goes straight to jail.
Rove and the others have the illegal stink of bush all over them!
Jack Moss @ 17:
In a crooked(conservative) court with a very biased Judge that is crooked Republican, let's try Rove and all the Bush cronies in a fair court with a fair Judge like the Constitution stands for you Bush Republican Puke!!
Can somebody please introduce KKKarls head to a small lead object? Even a fast moving truck will do. Maybe a small bus or even a limousine could do the job. I'm very surprised this kind of filth is alowed to walk free in this country.
AN Flower @ 50:
CBS is just as bad as Fox News and everyone should boycott them until they start reporting all the news accurately and not making news to slant viewers one way or another. They could start by telling the whole truth about that 60 minutes black out in Alabama(unbelievable in 2008)
Karl Rove had his monkey fingers in Arkansas' business as well, installing a crony after they jettisoned a federal prosecutor, so the Alabama dirty tricks don't surprise me at all! For this man to be released on appeal is a miracle, and proves that at least miracles are still happening.
But what I wanna know is, how can the feds keep giving a pass to the Mayor of Memphis, truly one of the most corrupt politicians in the South, worse than the guy in Detroit could ever be (altho both cities are in decline and for the same reasons -- total corruption at the top). Elvis is turning in his grave.
I'm praying that the South's next miracle will happen when Memphis' Mayor is exposed to the light of law and his cockroachy self scurries for cover.
More power to the people of "new media." Keep it coming. The "old media" is all corporate owned, and often by the people putting the politicians into office. They are not going to go against the grain and tell it like it is. Get Rove's ass.
Waxman Where Are You
This looks like a job for Congressman Waxman. He should shed some light on this with consistent determination to get to the facts. He may even prove this president is using his office and surveillance program to spy on Democrats. I would not be surprised. Soon after Danny Haster seat went Democratic, the Republicans turned up the focus on Democratic behavior.
Lets face it, the Republicans may not have dominance in the two houses; they do have power in the right places. The Justice Department's focus seems to support any claim that the Democrats are just as corrupt as the Republicans and from who's doing the time perspective, they can make the claim the Democrats have more felons.
The bias toward Democratic candidates heightens the fact we need the Republicans out of the Executive power seat. The Republican are very unpopular with the American people. They are desperate and will initiate scandalizing plan after scandalizing plan to level the political playing field. If there were ever a time to unite, the time is now. We have got to get these guys out of office.
Joseph
Rove needs to be [Deleted. Please do not advocate violence against others on this site-Sitemonitor]
We should be used to this by now, The justice department in this country is an arm of the rethuglican party, Having done 6 times as many investigation on Democrats then Republicans over the last 7 years and having 6 times as many inditments on republicans then Democrats should tell you how it works, If it were not for the honesty of many of the states attorneys who under risk of being fired still investigated republicans things would be much worse, I honestly believe the republican party should be tried under the Rico standard for racketering, Show me a republican politician and all show you a crook, a child molestor or a closet homosexual. At the very least a war mongering lie telling racist sack of garbage
did you think I was kidding about them being crooks there own treasurer stold a million bucks from them, HA HA HA too funny
The DoJ needs to be fumigated. Rove, Gonzo, Mukassey need to spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Why waste the resorces on these worthless pigs.Hang them ten minutes after the trial.
He's finally free! He should never have gone in the first place.
And to that clown peddling that "Dirty Don" garbage, blow it out a certain orifice of yours.
