Maybe the SS (and other agencies under the executive) have a "blacklist" of organizations and people who they are ordered not to work with (unless specifically assigned to spy on or infiltrate them). I doubt it would surprise anyone (though I am sure it would outrage just about everyone), and if that is the case, the SPLC would be a clear candidate for inclusion on that list.
The poor guy at the SS may have asked him to do that so he could gather the evidence without getting in trouble.
