It used to be that when the military appeared before Congress, such as General MacArthur or General Marshall, they appeared in civilian suits.

This morning I was checking Drudge Report and found this article about a Republican commissioner who had many, literally many hidden cameras in his house to film gay trysts with male prostitutes. see here http://www.cumberlink.com/articles/2008/04/09/news/local/doc47fcbe3f506d...
The I looked up the giuy and there was a picture of him shaking hands with Karl Rove! Here http://www.brucebarclay.com/pictures.html

White House Steps Up Iran Rhetoric
@uncle joe #43 -
Think about all the folks around the world who currently hate the USA because of the Bush misadministration. Even though most of us don't agree with it. Is that fair? No.
When you say "Fuck Texas" (or "fuck texas", since your shift key apparently doesn't work), it's the same thing. Most Texans are not into insane religious cults who practice polygamy, child abuse, incest, and welfare fraud, who build multimillion dollar fortresses and dare the law to come after them. These particular nutjobs just happen to be in Texas, but there are others of them all over the country. So don't blame it on Texans.
And what's a lufa? Do you mean loofah, maybe? As in Bill O'Reilly, Loofah Boy? What's he got to do with this?
Why aren't these repug assholes admitting that they tore up Iraq, killed millions, mangled millions more, looted their country and murdered a head of state just to show his pappy he can do what he can't? chimpy is the worst.
Now we have general bullshitter and his partners in crime lying to us continually.
chimpy doesn't even lie and say it will take another 6 months to end his war any more. The idiot just says fuck you all, I will leave my mistakes to the next president. What a load of steaming hot crap.
It's official. Bush wants to kill us all to fulfill his fantasies of the Apocalypse.
Good comments tonight!
Paul deserves all the praise he has gotten on this site. It is a shame that we are not talking about the Bill of Impeachment that should have come out of the Judiciary committee charging Bush and Cheney with "high crimes and ect." Maybe Paul will become the first "Presidential candidate" from either party to sign on.
Douglas Fife deserves a great deal more attention than he is getting. It is worth restating, that the office he ran in the DOD generated "false and misleading intelligence" that was used to justify a war. Why his activities are so note worthy is the fact that to knowingly provide false and/or misleading information to the President is called treason (even if it is authorized by the Sec. of Defense or the VP). Many always believed that McNamara's confession (in his book) that he knowingly provided false and misleading information to Johnson during Vietnam was enough to justify charging McNamara with treason. Also lets not forget the 58,000 deaths that were or could be considered a direct result of his actions.
Fife's statements in his book and on 60 minutes should raised questions as to just how and why this "bogus intelligence" was given a higher priority than that of the rest of the intelligence community. Another little item, Fife had his security clearances yanked in 1991 or 92. What could possibility justify the return of TS security clearance to a person considered to be a "Security Risk"???
After watching Fife explain how everything he did was exactly prefect but the resulting failures of those actions was not his fault, I have to agree with Franks' assessment of Fife, yes he is the stupidest fucking man on this planet.
New World Order @ 11:
good to see a Senator putting the obvious illogicality of what is going on out there into the public domain.
Constitutional lawyers and bloggers have been calling out on these points for years, finally we get our opinions quoted.
It always amazes me when people say there is "no light at the end of the tunnel". When I hear that they make it sound like the U.S. Government itself is the only factor that matters in Iraq and that all they have to do is find the right strategy to make it work. That simply is not the case. The U.S. military is a big factor but its not the most powerful one. There are many factors and players with in and outside of Iraq that are equal to or more powerful than the U.S. military and its that which the American people over all refuse to recognize.
New World Order @ 17:
Military showing up in all their glory wearing full dress uniforms for a civilian political hearing could be seen as an attempt to intimidate,
echoes of the Greek colonels or South American juntas.
Likewise Gen. Hayden when wearing his CIA hat and doing PR stuff before the cameras in full dress uniform.
I would bet this practice started during the reagan years with its slavish worship of anything in uniform,
and the US mil trying to rehabilitates its image post Vietnam defeat.

Foot and Mouth is curable and mostly non fatal in livestock, but expensive and theres strict international rules on exporting and importing animals which could be contaminated.
As in most things in modern monoculture farming, money and stupidity rule the roost, F&M only kills off the weakest in any herd and would soon be a non issue if proper breeding and traditional selection processes were followed.
In the UK the gov inspectors themselves were spreading F&M between farms due to shoddy sterilization practices between inspections, this was exposed by journalists in the media.
Theres been many reports of wild Deer going down with BSE symptoms near animal research stations in the US,
either its only there that students are bothering to monitor wild deer in the areas or things could be escaping from the lab.
Theres a good reason to do certain research off shore and practice good barrier methods.
"And what big EYES you have, grandma."
"The better to see the success of the surge with, my dear."
I was watching Lou Dobbs on CNN yesterday speaking with some retired military officer about Petreaus's testimony and troop levels. Dobbs apparently could not understand why they can't just put more troops in Iraq if needed. I mean, he makes it sound like there are thousands of extra combat troops just sitting around in the U.S. with nothing to do. That simply is not the case. The Officer then brought up the fact that the U.S. military has a whole array of ongoing missions to contend with and Iraq and Afghanistan are just the most well known. Those other commitments also affect troop levels and are part of the overall rotation. There are U.S. troops in Columbia (counter drug and counter terror), Philippines (counter terror), Djibouti (counter terror), South Korea (technically remains at war with North Korea), etc. There just isn't enough combat troops available to carry out any more missions so they are pulling people from other branches or MOSs, and retraining them as replacements.
Then, Dobbs was curious as to why the military is having a hard time expanding or attracting recruits. The reason for that problem is obvious. Its not because the average citizen doesn't like the military or that its not a great career choice or that it doesn't pay very well. The simple fact is that most people, including the military itself (I.E. very low morale) has little to no confidence in its civilian or military leadership. We see that in low recruitment rates, Bush's low poll numbers, low approval for the wars themselves, etc.
The proud parents of Ambassador Crocker announced the engagement of their son to General Petraeus in Washington today. The couple met on an evening in a zone described as a green environment during the katusha festivals. They have since spent much of their time there since.
A fall wedding is planned however, the date yet remains about one Freidman unit away. The shock and awe felt when told our Ryan had found that special someone will prepare us for the October event.
The happy couple have announced plans to reside in DC and have their eye on a couple of Houses.

I haven't seen any deviation in the Iraqmire agenda since the US began its occupation. Pelosi, Reed, no help there. Rhetoric upon rhetoric. There is a despotic, rackateering, hegemonic, greedy profitaria ruling this milquetoast legislation, and frankly, I couldn't get much more aggravated with the constant news of death opening its greedy mouth up in Iraq and swallowing soldiers, civilians, swallowing whole the kicking and screaming future of an already troubled country.

Maybe partying will help.
Silly me. I thought the surge was going so well, too. I half expected Petraeus to say that with the oil revenues earned by the Iraqis, they bought every child a pony, and the troops were already headed home, under a shower of rose petals. But, NO.

In the exercise, the government said it would have been forced to dig a ditch in Kansas 25 miles long to bury carcasses. In the simulation, protests broke out in some cities amid food shortages.

I agree, the draft is coming and at some point they will have no choice but to do it. Even with those bonuses, recruitment is still down or if you look at Bush's "numbers" recruitment is at least on par. Lets face it, even with those high bonuses no one is exactly standing outside of recruiting stations pounding on the doors to get in to serve the Bush Administration and I can't say that I don't blame them.
The odd thing is, I've been talking to many war supporters and boy are they enthused about Bush's wars. As soon as you bring up the possibilty of the draft though most respond with "If that happens I'll run!". They don't even bother to hide their cowardice.

From CNN:
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) – Hillary Clinton used her trademark laugh Thursday to deflect a question about the $800,000 her husband earned in 2005 giving speeches for a Bogota-based group that supports the Colombia free trade agreement — the same trade deal she currently opposes.
Asked by CNN if those earnings represented a conflict of interest given that she has dipped into her family's pocketbook to pay campaign bills, Clinton threw up her hands and laughed loudly for several seconds.
"How many angels dance on the head of the pin?," she responded, continuing to giggle. "I have really, uh, nothing to … I mean, how do you answer that?"

The military leaders should have NO SAY in matters of international policy. They should be called upon ONLY in situations warranting a LAST RESORT tactical necessity. They have been courted FAR too often and have historically led this nation into paths of aggression and un-American policy. The LAST thing the USA needs at this point in our history is a military leader guiding the decisions of this nation.

2002 Rangel (D) "Bring Back the Draft"
2004 it gets stuffed by Congress but....
I wonder if the pro war Congresscritters of both parties have any plans for 09 and the hundred years war !?
http://www.slate.com/?id=2077346
In an April 17, 1971, piece in the New York Times, Rangel argued that the proposed "volunteer" force would be "a lie." Poor minorities, in need of employment, would wind up volunteering and "doing the white man's dirty work," he wrote, while "white Americans could then sip cocktails and watch the black Hessians make war on their color television sets, just like the plantation owners who sipped mint juleps on their verandas and watched the darkies toiling in the fields." Rangel insisted then—as he insists about his calls for conscription today—that he wasn't being facetious to prove a point, that he believes a draft would be better than our current military.
But Rangel also wrote in his 1971 article, "There is only one way this country can get its young to loyally perform military service. It must begin to institute morally just foreign … policies." He may have been overstating the case; whether or not young people will gladly head into battle probably doesn't hinge on the justness of the war. But with this much Charlie Rangel surely still agrees: Without a just war, it's impossible to have a just draft.

A love story...
A man and a woman who had never met before, and were both married to

Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, they were
both very tired and fell asleep quickly...He in the upper bunk and she in the

At 1:00 AM , the man leaned down and gently woke the woman saying,
"Ma ' am, I ' m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the
closet to get me a second blanket? I ' m awfully cold."
"I have a better idea," she replied. "Just for tonight, let ' s pretend that
we ' re married."
"Wow! That ' s a great idea!" he exclaimed.
"Good," she replied. "Get your own damn blanket."
After a moment of silence, he farted.

The figures on unemployment were always a ruse. If they had measured underemployment, people would have been in for a shock. And that situation will only get worse now that we are heading into a recession.
I hate to say this, but America seems to almost be decaying. And it seems as though it has set in at all levels. At the level of the presidency, there is Bush. At 'street leve', there is that case of those girls who kidnapped another girl and beat her in a locker room, filming all of it so that they can post it on Youtube. There are so many stories like that, every day.

He isn't a politician, he is reporting based on what the situation is in Iraq, of which we know next to nothing about. Sorry that he does not agree that we need to get out right now but that is a foolish argument. He made it very clear that we need to make the necessary adjustments to win the war and promptly get out.
You people that go after his service are pathetic, seriously look at your selves and your pathetic lives. All you have to do is attack an honorable man? Fucking losers.
Bill @ 119:
Disgraceful is taking orders from a retarded monkey; disgraceful is that you or anybody else for that matter can believe anybody can win anything when we lost the second Monkey King ordered invasion. Nobody who kills people for a living (especially based on %100 pure lies from Florida) is honorable. Sorry, on that point I don't even have to beg to differ. If George Bush was my boss, I'd sure as Hell find another job. You're pathetic! Oh Tooly, suck up to the Anus who says we've got to spend 9 billion dollars a month occupying a nation illegally for how long until we win? Bechtel/Halliburton/KBR/Blackwater, are pleased as punch! Of course, who's getting the shitty end of the stick? Your children's children, every poor soldier that is there, is going to be there and who may or may not die there for the King Monkey Follies and of course, every second class human/Iraqi person who was either murdered, lost family and friends they had loved or who are still completely butt-fucked by this administration's arrogant military blunder of the millennia. Fuuuuuuuuuuck you! You can behold the general as holy for his service but I don't when it is clear that we as a nation were and continue to be wrong. The general in my view is a key part of the problem now.

Yo, that is a scary picture. The only thing missing are the horns and the long, pointed tail.
There is no light at the end of the tunnel in Iraq. Because Iraq is a cave. A dark, scary cave. In that cave is a big, big bear and he is going to eat us alive. The end.
