hi y'all - sorry i'm late here - it's a phenomenally beautiful night in SF.

Large signs come down after a couple of hours, smaller ones placed to the sides are best and will stay up for days or weeks.

technically a misdemeanor, but absolutely legal under the constitution.

And a HELL of a lot of fun.

Christy's picture

That's so awesome. Thank you for doing it!!

And I LOVE Steve Earle too!!! :)

scarlet p.'s picture

I usually do classical music posts on my blog, but listen to a lot of rock while signposting. Much of what I do is just drive around listening to music and finding cool places to hang signs. Music makes the painting go very pleasantly as well...

Way to go Freeway Blogger!!!!!!

Stating what needs to be said, seeing as the msm (lower case intended) forgot their purpose.
Hopefully inspiring the people, whom government is supposed to be 'working for', to speak out and take legal action.
You are a true hero of the people.

I'm not American, but like many people around the world, I am extremely concerned about the crimes this administration has committed against millions of people and how they just 'keep getting away with it'.

Peace be with you.

Finally inspired to start freeway blogging myself.

All it takes is one person in every city.
Well, now I am that person in my city.

You don't need ot "sign up", just get carboard, paint and a bungee. Once you do it, you will never look at the roadways the same again. It is a total high! I've done it for 3 years, never been caught or had a problem.

I cross posted this video at DKos. We should get everyone involved in this sign contest. Maybe even buy some billboards. I'm thinking I'll put something up on the 2 hwy.

Thanks Barbara and FB. Sounds like a great idea. What happens, though, if a cop car pulls up? Can they arrest you?

BTW: We have freeway bloggers here in Houston too!!!! But all they seem to be able so say is "Ron Paul". :-)

DigDug's picture

Wow! That is so awesome! I seen several signs where I live, especially when driving into LA.

scarlet p.'s picture

The main thing is simply to paint the signs. Cardboard with a thin layer of white and then lettering either with an overhead projector or "art". once the signs are painted, you'll figure out where to put them. anything you can see while driving is a place you can put a sign and it'll be READ. the more clever you are in placement, the longer they stay up.

once you get into the mindset of it, it's one of the greatest games you'll ever play. like guerrilla war without the violence.

bullfrog's picture

where were YOU, george?

SatanHimself's picture

Freewayblogger: You, sir, are a badass.

I put up a couple of "Draft Jenna First" signs here in LA--kid you not, by the time I looped around the highway to get a good picture the cops had already taken them down. They must have watched me do it and come in when and I left. Actually kind of cool they didn't make an arrest.

Thanks for all you do.

Necadawg Says's picture

V ery moving indeed but seems to reach the extreme left only. i don't think it will change percepetion of the right wingers.

scarlet p.'s picture

About cops: I've run into them about eight times in over 5,000 postings. when you're picking the time and place (and posting with bungees/duct tape/ hammer&nails only takes ten - twenty seconds...) you really don't have to deal with them much. When I do meet them though I'm very polite and eager even to do everything they say. so long as all i'm guilty of is putting up a sign (and not "disobeying a lawful order" or i"interfering with police" or being "belligerent" etc. etc.) there's really nothing anyone can do. Yes, I put up a political sign on public property here in America... not just a right, but one of the most protected rights we have.

bullfrog's picture

I love the way Condi Rice condemns President Carter for meeting Hamas in Syria, because Hamas is a terrorist organisation.Firstly, Rice has been the most useless
Secretary of State; She has accomplished nothing and is the laughing stock of the world. Her lies about a mushroom cloud enabled the genocide and slaughter of over a million people in Iraq. Who the hell is she, a war criminal, to lecture about peace?
I praise President Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, while Rice has won only the ridicule and disdain of the entire world. Carter deserves enormous credit. Diplomacy is something Israel and this administration would never consider, because perpetual war is what these Straussians feed on. Palestine is the occupier, and it is this occupation which has caused the Palestinians to fight for their land which has been stolen and raped by this barbaric shitty little Apartheid country. It has absolutely no intention of a two state solution. War enables them to perpetrate their genocide which is cheaper and far more practical. But silly me, it is the Holocaust which gives it its entitlement to slaughter with impunity.

Johnscar's picture

I don't know about the signs not having an effect on people. They're sitting in their cars, bored out of their minds. They see a sign, read it, and - who knows - it probably gets them thinking - the right winger is thinking - "Idiot!" But it's like he's stuck in his car and who knows where his train of thought starts to go. I would think these signs could be very, very effective to their captive audience.

scarlet p.'s picture

It's difficult to gauge their actual effectiveness, but they really do make the place look nicer in my opinion: just a bit of free speech in the middle of what's otherwise like a mall of advertisements and logos.

I especially like the thought that people visiting from other countries see them from time to time.

Sometimes I'll put up a giant in-your-face sign and find it still up three or four days later. I wish I could explain what that feels like, knowing that so many people - like hundreds of thousands - had driven by and seen something it took you ten minutes and twelve cents to create. It's like looking at the Grand Canyon: rationally you understand the forces it took to make it happen, but when you're faced with it physically it's a bit overwhelming.

having 900,000 people pass by something and NOT ONE of them taking the ten minutes or so to take it down... just amazing.

Senate candidate Bob Schaffer says he's "disgusted" that the Denver Post reported on his free vacation to guess-where courtesy of Jack Abramoff. Instead he basks in the cash infusion from Heinous Dick.

"Cheney told him he was impressed with the growth and construction he saw from the window of his limousine as he traveled a short distance from the airport to a private reception for donors to Schaffer's campaign."

Almost as disgusting as what Schaffer helped protect in Marianas...

Thanks for inspiring my drives across the city by the bay.

Craig's picture

I was putting up tons of anti-Cheney protest posters once and was threatened with arrest, cops torn them all down, secret service agent pointed a sniper rifle at me.
Of course, I was doing it outside a restaurant where Cheney was appearing for a fundraiser, and was handing a copy of the poster to the secret service guy, so I guess it's understandable. After they torn them all down, I taped one on my back and walked back and forth along the sidewalk a few feet in front of the restaurant.
So they closed off the sidewalk.

Childish of me I guess, but it felt damned good.

Razzamatazz's picture

WTF are you doing with an anti-union ad on your blog?! Has SEIU really stooped that low as to do such a thing?

scarlet p.'s picture

hi fiver, it really is a simple operation: put text in front of eyeballs, as many as you can. freeways have the advantage of 1) hundreds of thousands of people all passing by the exact same spots and 2) all of them being pretty much trapped in their vehicles. If something is just even slightly difficult to reach, it'll stay up for ages.

particularly on divided highways: when you put something facing southbound on the northbound side, and the next exit is five or ten miles away... it'll be there for awhile, believe me.

Got any good source recommendations for free or cheap cardboard?

In Florida, there are wide-open "cardboard only" dumpsters behind every store and plaza, tons of them. If you start pulling out boxes, store owners actually will offer you some more. Everyone assumes you're moving.
You could easily get enough cardboard in a couple hours to make hundreds of signs.

this is great! i've always admired the work you do, FB...
i wish i had the guts! maybe soon... i live next to 2 interstates...
and, i'm a sign painter...
from that experience, i know that most any sign get 3-6 seconds of read time...
if that... especially on a highway... it HAS to be simple and bold...

keep up the great work! i shall get brave some day soon...
thanks for the inspiration...

scarlet p.'s picture

If you're looking for cardboard, you'll find it. Behind malls - furniture and appliance stores for large pieces (the best) - or just cruising around light industrial areas - you can find all sorts of cardboard (and other building materials too, btw) the thin layer of white paint is important though... really turns cardboard into a sign.

And I can't emphasize this enough: cardboard, or any other stiff medium, over bedsheets or cloth. the relative ease in both painting and especially posting of cardboard over cloth is immense.

Leslie's picture

I'm a big fan of your work Freeway Blogger. Keep it up!

Craig's picture

Wish I could do this. But I'm disabled and can't drive. And I'm stuck in the boonies. I could maybe do a couple of freeway overpasses that are closest, but it will take me a day to walk there and back. Maybe I can cut a deal with someone - you do the driving, I do the risky part.

fiver's picture

Didn't the Scarlet Pimpernel rescue the nobility? I'm thinking that now there might be a few who deserve the guillotine. It might make a good poster, but I couldn't draw it very well. But heck, I can do other things.

Nice to meetcha FB. Tomorrow, I go shopping. Gotta say it again: dude, you rock.

scarlet p.'s picture

hi katy hussein katy. next time you're driving, look at fences between the interstate and parking lots, especially when there are bushes/hedges between the fencing and the parking lot - there's lots of them if you're looking for them. Once you find one, simply drive to the parking lot, park, and place the sign in between the bush and the fence. all you have to do is walk three or four feet, if that, reach through the hedge, secure the sign (i suggest bungee cords) to the fence and you're done. easiest thing in the world, and they tend to last awhile too.

NoBuddy's picture

As I said before even the courts have held that democracy depends on "an uninhibited marketplace of ideas in which truth will prevail" - a marketplace where there is a "wide diversity of viewpoints from a multiplicity of sources."

That's why our government of the (multi-national) corporation, by the corporation and for the corporation is in favor of media consolidation and the end of net neutrality, in order to curtail diverse opinions.

Lets not be so myopic on Iraq as to forget the other issues being buried by the media, such as health care. fiscal responsibility, support for the constitution as opposed to the unitary executive concept, eavesdropping in violation of the 4th amendment, Bush's raiding of the Social Security surpluses to finance tax cuts, and so forth.

That'll be the GOP trick, to dislodge the current issues in favor of some obsolete issue. In 2004, in the critical month of October, the issue was Kerry and Vietnam. What's it going to be this time around - Obama and his preacher? If the FCC regulated media starts pulling its usual crap this October, there is the Freeway Blogger approach to keep the real issues front and center, among others.

With a 60% majority, we'd also be able to investigate the hell out of the Bushies after they leave office, effect election reforms, appoint progressive judges [1 or more will be retiring from SCOTUS soon], withdraw from Iraq, and undo 8 years of Bush damage.

Longevity's much higher, especially for "Impeach" signs in the last two years - especially in military towns like oceanside.

"Chimpeach" used to stay up for awhile too, 'til they figured it out.

Being cryptic is another longevity tool - like "We're all wearing the blue dress now." by the time they've figured out what it means (Bush jacked off on more than just an intern) they're miles away.

Hi x. And here here.

Leslie's picture

fiver @ 88:

Taking impeachment "off the table" has already established an imperial presidency.

It's simple math Fiver: Democrats don't have a big enough majority in the House and only a majority of 1 in the Senate. Any investigations would be heavily blocked in the House by a corrupt GOP. Then we'd have the MSM supporting the GOP 24/7 on every news station and the papers going on about how vindictive and crazy Democrats are. We already hear it about the Iraq war, even though a majority of Americans don't support the war.

But, OK, assuming the House were able to move forward on investigations and impeach without any cooperation from the administration [think witnesses], the Senate would never get a conviction. Because the Republican Senators are corrupt, and the Dems only lead by one vote.

By the way, the responsibility isn't solely that of Congress. The public has to bring a lot more pressure. We also need to vote in more Democrats.

Great stuff FB, I believe the trick is just typing out the font on Word and then using an overhead projector to blow it up for copying it to the sign for painting, right?

Is that the trick for making the sign look professional? I have already acquired an old overhead projector from the 80's. I am totally going to start doing this, we have a major freeway with all these brand new overpasses that is begging for signage, and want them to look good. Got the cardboard, bungees and paint already, just need to figure out the finer points on the font

Leslie's picture

P.S. Maybe the Dems in the House ought to still try...but my guess is there isn't enough support from the Blue Dogs, which would cut into the Democratic majority.

thanks scarlet p. !

I make anti-war stickers on Avery 5164 shipping labels (3.3"x4" @ save toner setting) using graphics and photos made by me or found on the web along with text. I then add a little magic marker to make them pop from the background. I always have some stickers in my pocket and put them up all over the city. I've put up hundreds and am sometimes surprised to come upon one a few weeks later. People add graffiti to them or tear them down. I like it either way because I know they have been seen. In rainy Seattle they last outside a couple weeks. In good weather for months. Like this guy I have never been detained or arrested. And I often put them on a light pole or the back side of a traffic sign in front of dozens of people at a downtown crosswalk. A couple times I have had someone holler at me as I walked away but I just ignored them.

fiver's picture

Hey all, I get that impeachment may be a joust at a windmill. But you don't just fight the fights that you can win, you fight the fights that need fighting. I also think there could easily be a turn in the tide once the evidence is out there. But Pelosi/Reid have stopped even having hearings! A Republican Congress could not have done better for Bush.

Yes, yet again, the election is a vote for the lesser of the evils. However, it seems clear that the Democrat will be the lesser of the two evils, hence, I'll vote for the Democrat. Remember that the evangelists will have a near 100% turnout, as usual, and will vote for the greater of the two evils. A funny thing about this election is, unlike the past, where the fiscal Republicans were pandering to the evangelists and the gun lobby to vote against their economic interests (Republican), I'm seeing the evangelists pandering to the fiscal Republicans (who want dividend and interest income free of taxes, replace by earned income tax and sales tax). That is uncharted territory since the current policies of the GOP favor borrow and spend, which leads to stagflation, which is not good for the stock market, or the rest of the economy.

Anyhow, the "fool" is the one who doesn't vote at all. And I don't recommend cutting off the nose to spite the face. So, we're stuck voting Democrat, and one by one, we need to be taking over this party, dislodging the lousy representatives and senators one by one. But don't do it by electing a greater evil.

First we drive out the Republicans, then we clean house. When the politicians fear the wrath of the people more than the wrath of the powerful true democracy may yet return.

Agree with you about fighting the important fights, whether or not you have a chance of winning. Because sometimes it's just the fight itself that's important.

Dunno what Pelosi and Reid are doing really...frankly, I've been too focused on Bush. But you can read Pelosi's blog, The Gavel, and see what she's doing. It's been my impression, however, that she's been working on blocking Bush with Waxman and Conyers and others. Conyers also has a blog about all his ongoing efforts to bring charges against Rove and Miers for refusing to testify before Congress. And Waxman is investigating the hell out of the Bushies.

Acquaintances of mine involved in California politics say Pelosi wants to stop Bush.

Nice work FB! Also, nice work encouraging others to do the same. I used to see signs in San Jose, CA all the time off the 280 and I loved them. I don't see them much when I drive around Seattle now: maybe I should start a Northwest FB chapter :)

Fiver, the repugnantcants have instructed their other members of congress and the senate to block any bill that would make the dems look good in anything. They have got the MSM blaming the democratically controlled congress and senate for not being able to accomplish anything. The MSM doesn't tell the public that the repugnantcants are blocking every bill that they try to pass. They don't mention the fact that the repugnantcants have filabustered more bills than any other congress in history.

hi odanny! an overhead projector is the thing alright - like a printing press for billboards. with that, and transparencies (printers usually have a special setting for printing on transparencies) cardboard, paint, ducttape, box cutter and a marking pen you're set. process here (with beethoven)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qMyQlQZyZqE

duct tape and boxcutter can make any size/shape canvass. shine the transp. onto the cardboard (springclamps work well to hang cardboard) trace with marking pen, fill in with foam brush. it's a bit slow at first, but once you work out the bugs you can dash off forty signs - large ones - in an evening. music/radio helps.

with forty signs in my truck, i can reach a HELL of a lot of people the next day, especially in sprawling megalopolii like southern california.

I was thinking about the other side of the coin as well. This is serious business with serious consequenses. If you get caught, you will be prosecuted. But for those of you willing to take the risk AND accept the consequenses a paintball gunn with read paint and i nice recruitment billboard as a target would make a serious statement.

would get a billboard that says are you better off than 28 years ago ( when reagan killed this country) but this being Nebraska nobody would figure it out god even our democratic congress critter tries to out rethug the rethugs

A billboard like that would have to harken back to before the Vietnam War (which really screwed up our economy) and would have to explain why. If well written and comprehensive it could kill almost as many motorists in 5 years as Bush has killed soldiers.

I've done my small part here in Queens NY to freeway blog...mostly on the subway station a few blocks from my house...its amazing how long some of these "blogs" last...I guess one can attribute to the lack of clean up on the good old "A" subway line here in Ozone Park...lol..Keep up the good work Mayor Bloomberg..!

I don't know, wish the House would pursue it anyway too. But my best guess is that Pelosi did the math, per my comments above. She probably has a lot of reasons we can only guess at beyond: a corrupt GOP, a corrupt corporate media, not enough House Democrats in support of impeachment, the lack of cooperation and total dismissal of Congress by the White House, etc.

You know, for a while there, prior to the 2006 elections, Conyers was going around the country holding public hearings about bringing impeachment charges. I saw him hold a panel discussion at NYC's Town Hall, in midtown, with John Dean, the publisher of Harper's, and a couple other people. That's when all our hopes were up that the Democrats would win big in Congress. Only they didn't win as big as hoped. They won majorities, but slim ones. Then Conyers shut up about impeachment and Pelosi took it off the table.

Another element to this, which I've heard lawyers mention, is that Pelosi doesn't control what issues Congress addresses. She only has a say in what bills reach the floor.

i just remembered a technique i used way back b.c. (before computers - computer cut vinyl lettering)...
on large windows and temp signs - those little 3-4" paint rollers make great, fast, HUGE lettering... it takes a knack, i guess... as a brush letterer, i know the basic principles of lettering and used those rollers as a big wide brush, using a brush stroke type/font of my own... gothic lettering works also, but takes a bit more time to make it "clean"...
i still have my little G100 opaque projector... another hint - project at night, makes it easier to see to trace... be sure to make the type/font as large as will fit the projector - easier to enlarge and clearer to see...
i'm getting inspired! time to come out of "retirement"!

My hope has not died either, but ya gotta admit, all you have to do to scare the shit out of 90% of the people in this country and make them give up all their rights is run a few planes into some buildings.

If you think about it, that is pretty pathetic.

glad to hear it katy hussein katy - another great thing about freewayblogging, and America, is that you can say pretty damn much anything you like, so long as it doesn't specifically threaten anyone or, I believe, call for the violent overthrow of the U.S. Government. Apart from that, you're pretty much free to say or comment on anything you like.

The trick is to aim for sooner rather than later I think. If the first sign you end up posting says "Stay out of the Boxcars! It's a trick!" that means you started late.

Leslie @ 123,
I tried looking for a benefit of the doubt I could give our Madame Speaker. But among the bills she's allowed to the floor are a censure of MoveOn and a resolution declaring that Christians are wonderful. If she can fit those in, she could probably allow Kucinich a hearing on why Cheney is less than an American hero. Thanks for the response.

The trouble with small messages, like post its, writing on money, stickers etc. is that, well... they're small. trust me, making things BIG is almost just as easy and has a much larger impact. like somebody really cares about this stuff. they gave us full and unfettered freedom of speech for a reason, and at least part of that reason was to Sound-The-Fucking-Alarm when things like Bush, Torture, Habeus Corpus, Illegal Wars and the full-on looting of the treasury to profiteers takes place.

hell, it's practically ALL they gave us. might as well use it - especially when it's fun too.

The thing is, some people sit on the fence, but "err" on the side of "safety." For those people it takes a lot of work to perpetuate the lie. Deep down, they know this war, the killing and torture are bad. FB reminds them. They can feel a sense that others object to the war too(so it's OK to dissent), but those others have been squelched (with Pentagon ray guns, and arrest.)

I always "donate" my newspaper to the school. It gets read by others. Thing is, any picture of Bush has devil horns added onto it: it has become a compulsion of mine. They see. (My own small revolution. Swaying minds overseas-- wink.)
